Bennett made her film debut in the 2007 romantic comedy Music and Lyrics opposite Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. Most recently, coming on the heels of her appearance in Lionsgate action-comedy Borderlands (released August 2024), Bennett starred in Samir Oliveros’ feature The Luckiest Man in America opposite Paul Walter Hauser, which premiered at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival and was quickly acquired by IFC and Sapan Studios.

Denzel Washington’s time as Robert McCall, also known as The Equalizer, has seen the actor and the trilogy of films he stars in buck several trends. Firstly, they’re sequels, something that as a rule, Washington doesn’t return to do. Yes, we know he’s tearing up the scenery in Gladiator II right now, but that doesn’t really count as the actor isn’t a returning part of that series.

For The Equalizer though, Washington has broken that rule, returning to work with director Antoine Fuqua two more times. The films have also proved to be rock solid at the global box office, bucking the trend of sequels earning less than their predecessors. It looks like The Equalizer may be getting a spin-off and we could meet the characters soon!

The Equalizer has had several incarnations. It began as a CBS series in 1985 with Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a retired spy with a mysterious past who hires himself out to help those in need. He usually specialized in people ignored by the police to find justice on his own terms. The show was a good success, running for four seasons.

The property found bigger fame with a 2014 movie starring Denzel Washington as McCall, which became a huge hit. Sequels would follow in 2018 and 2023 to mark one of Washington’s better franchises.

In 2021, CBS turned its eye to a revival with former rapper Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a former black ops operative now trying to live a quiet life in New York.

On last week's Empire podcast, Denzel Washington confirmed that reports of his premature retirement were greatly exaggerated. Also on last week's Empire podcast, the Gladiator II star was asked by our very own Chris Hewitt whether he'd ever be tempted to revisit the character of Robert McCall — aka The Equalizer — in future Equalizer movies: Washington neither confirmed nor denied, instead opting for a five-second stare into the interviewer's soul. Now, in a remarkable turn of events, the senior Washington has made an about-face, confirming to Esquire in an interview that not only could he be tempted to play McCall again, but he will — twice!

As the sprawling NCIS universe reminds us, the folks at CBS love a good spinoff.

So it should come as no surprise that the network is developing a new series based on Queen Latifah’s beloved crime drama The Equalizer.

According to a report from Deadline, the show will center around two newcomers to the Equalizer universe, both of whom will be introduced on the sixteenth episode of the show’s current season.

The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 4 just aired on Sunday, so we’ve got a bit of a wait ahead of us.

And that’s a good thing, as insiders tell Deadline that the two new roles have yet to be cast.

The as-yet-unnamed characters are described as “a skilled younger female martial artist, weapons expert and criminologist with a secret origin story who turns to McCall (Queen Latifah) for help, and an older male former top CIA operative.
