First responder dramas tap into something universal: our fascination with heroes who race against time to save lives.
Whether it’s a firefighter pulling someone from a burning building, a paramedic delivering lifesaving CPR, or a police officer diffusing a tense situation, these stories keep us on the edge of our seats while tugging at our emotions.
Modern hits like 9-1-1 have mastered this formula, drawing millions of viewers weekly.
Emergency! (NBC/Screenshot)
But long before Buck, Hen, and Athena tackled skyscraper rescues and earthquakes, Emergency! quietly revolutionized TV’s portrayal of first responders.
This wasn’t just a procedural drama — it was a catalyst for real-world change.
The question remains: can today’s first responder shows, with all their glossy effects and interpersonal drama, match the cultural and societal impact of Emergency!?

The Captive’s War series by S.A. Corey is on its way to Prime Video! Eventually, that is, since these things take time, especially in the science fiction genre.
For those familiar with The Expanse, a new Prime series from the same authors (James S.A. Corey is a pen name for writers Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck) and showrunners is welcome news.
Even better, The Captive’s War series is an entirely new universe, separate and distinct from The Expanse. With all the sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and wannabes out there, something unique is an exciting prospect.
(Syfy)
Unfortunately, this doesn’t bode well for a potential continuation of The Expanse, a series that ended with three books’ worth of storytelling remaining.
On the bright side, this upcoming release is a good sign for the continued growth of the Science Fiction genre, especially in a more creative and intelligent direction.

This series is really leaning into the heavy themes, and Landman Season 1 Episode 3, “Hell Has a Front Yard,” doesn’t change that.
It dives deep into the oil industry’s inner workings and our complicated relationship with clean energy, continuing with the personal toll this world takes on everyone connected to it.
In many ways, it’s laying down some real talk about just how reliant we are on petroleum — and the fact that even those pushing for a cleaner future don’t fully grasp what that transition would demand.
(Emerson Miller/Paramount+)
Tommy’s conversation with Rebecca sums this up perfectly.
Tommy doesn’t sugarcoat his take on green energy. He lays out the uncomfortable truth: those 400-foot wind turbines may look like the future, but they’re embedded in the same system they’re meant to replace.
To build, maintain, and eventually dispose of them, you need a lot of diesel and oil,...

Leonardo DiCaprio stunned the world and made the arena of film his own when he delivered a once-in-a-lifetime performance in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? Later, he matured into an all-around powerhouse of acting with films like Django Unchained, The Wolf of Wall Street, and The Revenant.

But even before DiCaprio, Denzel Washington proved what true talent could harness by revealing a masterclass of exemplary acting crafted by a genius. The closer Blue Bloods gets to the end, the more upsetting it is that this show is going off the air.
Blue Bloods Season 14 Episode 16 did the impossible: It explored contentious, potentially divisive issues and explored them in a way that takes a stand without feeling heavy-handed.
As always, these issues were viewed through the lenses of people who love each other and want to do the right thing. The characters had their opinions, but the audience was free to form their own.

Eaglets, old flames, difficult conflicts, heartbreak, and potential new relationships. What a combo.
This week’s Fire Country Season 3 Episode 6 review hits on all the developments of Edgewater and our favorite (and not so fav) firefighters as they work to save an eagle sanctuary.
From the the town’s “awww”-inspiring investment in the baby eagles to plenty of dueling egos, this episode had lots of emotions and action. Not to mention more of newcomers Camden Casey and Audrey James.

Our Fire Country Season 3 Episode 6 spoilers laid out the plot line and location for this episode’s emergency call.
How cool to feature a wildfire threatening a bird sanctuary.
The episode did a great job setting up all the drama we’d see once Station 42 and Three Rock got to the eagle refuge, starting with the entire town gathering at the bar to watch two eagle eggs hatch.

Surviving the apocalypse isn’t just about stockpiling canned beans or dodging zombies — it takes grit, guts, and a whole lot of luck.
Unfortunately, these TV characters are running on empty in all three departments.
Whether it’s their diva demands, inability to adapt, or just plain bad luck, these lovable (and not-so-lovable) folks wouldn’t make it to sundown in a world gone mad.

They’d either annoy their survival group, attract trouble with their over-the-top antics, or just plain trip over their own feet.
Sure, we love them in their respective shows, but let’s be real — they’d be the first ones voted off Apocalypse Island.
Let’s take a look at 15 TV characters who’d bring plenty of drama to the end of the world but not much else.

While on the press trail for Gladiator II, Denzel Washington has revealed he’s signed up for The Equalizer 4 and Equalizer 5.
Denzel Washington’s time as Robert McCall, also known as The Equalizer, has seen the actor and the trilogy of films he stars in buck several trends. Firstly, they’re sequels, something that as a rule, Washington doesn’t return to do. Yes, we know he’s tearing up the scenery in Gladiator II right now, but that doesn’t really count as the actor isn’t a returning part of that series.
For The Equalizer though, Washington has broken that rule, returning to work with director Antoine Fuqua two more times. The films have also proved to be rock solid at the global box office, bucking the trend of sequels earning less than their predecessors. It looks like The Equalizer may be getting a spin-off and we could meet the characters soon!
The Equalizer has had several incarnations. It began as a CBS series in 1985 with Edward Woodward as Robert McCall, a retired spy with a mysterious past who hires himself out to help those in need. He usually specialized in people ignored by the police to find justice on his own terms. The show was a good success, running for four seasons.
The property found bigger fame with a 2014 movie starring Denzel Washington as McCall, which became a huge hit. Sequels would follow in 2018 and 2023 to mark one of Washington’s better franchises.

In 2021, CBS turned its eye to a revival with former rapper Queen Latifah as Robyn McCall, a former black ops operative now trying to live a quiet life in New York.

On last week's Empire podcast, Denzel Washington confirmed that reports of his premature retirement were greatly exaggerated. Also on last week's Empire podcast, the Gladiator II star was asked by our very own Chris Hewitt whether he'd ever be tempted to revisit the character of Robert McCall — aka The Equalizer — in future Equalizer movies: Washington neither confirmed nor denied, instead opting for a five-second stare into the interviewer's soul. Now, in a remarkable turn of events, the senior Washington has made an about-face, confirming to Esquire in an interview that not only could he be tempted to play McCall again, but he will — twice!
While the last brace of movies in the Equalizer trilogy swept up a cool near-$400 million at the box office, the kind of financial performance that would ordinarily make further sequels a virtual guarantee, both Washington and director Antoine Fuqua let The Equalizer 3 play out...

As the sprawling NCIS universe reminds us, the folks at CBS love a good spinoff.
So it should come as no surprise that the network is developing a new series based on Queen Latifah’s beloved crime drama The Equalizer.
According to a report from Deadline, the show will center around two newcomers to the Equalizer universe, both of whom will be introduced on the sixteenth episode of the show’s current season.

The Equalizer Season 5 Episode 4 just aired on Sunday, so we’ve got a bit of a wait ahead of us.
And that’s a good thing, as insiders tell Deadline that the two new roles have yet to be cast.
The as-yet-unnamed characters are described as “a skilled younger female martial artist, weapons expert and criminologist with a secret origin story who turns to McCall (Queen Latifah) for help, and an older male former top CIA operative.
