Metta World Peace is building quite the resume for himself on YouTube. Just before the end of the year, the basketball player formerly known as Ron Artest has made it three web series in one year by starring in The 5th Quarter, a black-and-white mini-doc released by WorldStarHipHop. The series documents Peace's return to the Queensbridge neighborhood of New York City, where he lived as a kid. The large housing project is known as the birthplace of rappers like Nas and Mobb Deep, and Peace gives The 5th Quarter viewers a tour before heading off to his first home game as a member of the New York Knicks. The sequence where he takes the subway to the game is reminiscent of the most famous scene from Jay-z's recent Life + Times documentary. Last January, Peace was busy interviewing children for The Noc's Metta World Therapy; more recently, he fired some bizarre...

One of the finest actresses working in independent film these days has to be Anessa Ramsey, who stole genre fans' hearts a few years back as Mya in the psychological thriller The Signal, which debuted at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.
Since then, she's gone on to co-star in another mind-bending horror flick called YellowBrickRoad that premiered at the 2012 Slamdance Film Festival and also worked on projects outside the genre including The 5th Quarter and the Footloose remake.
Now Ramsey is set to return to the horror world with first-time feature filmmaker Padraig Reynolds' film Rites of Spring, which will hit selected theaters this Friday, July 27th. The heist caper meets creature feature has been described as a 'genre-bending mash-up' akin to From Dusk Till Dawn and for very good reason- just when you think you've settled into one of Reynolds' creepy worlds, he comes at you out of nowhere...

It’s hard to take The 5th Quarter and similar films created with such an overt evangelical message seriously, and yet it’s a style of filmmaking that’s taking off in response to the growing “demand” for such films by the increasingly vocal Christian populace of America. Earlier this year the audience in question enjoyed Soul Surfer while the rest of the world squirmed uncomfortably in their seats as the 30-minute “movie of the week” story stretched to 90 minutes. The 5th Quarter has a similar “true story” premise, but this time of instead of the survivor going on to do great things in faith, it’s their death that spurs their loved ones to action. As a concept The 5th Quarter could have proved as entertaining as it is (theoretically) inspiring if not for the incompetent direction and writing of Rick Bieber and woefully bad acting by its lead,...

In A Better World (Sony) Winner of last year’s Best Foreign Film Oscar, this Danish export looks at two fractured families and the effect that the adult world dysfunction has on their two sons, who form an immediate and potentially deadly bond. Director Susanne Bier delivers another powerful work that maintains its drive during the films’ first 2/3, then falters somewhat during the last act. Still, well-worth seeing, and beautifully made. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Deleted scenes; Commentary by Bier and editor Pernille Bech Christensen; Interview with Bier. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
X-men First Class (20th Century Fox) “Origins” film set in the early 1960s, traces the beginnings of Magento and Professor X (played ably here by Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy), and how the once-close friends and colleagues became bitter enemies. If you thought the theatrical releases in late August were lacklustre, just wait until you see this week's DVD and Blu-ray line-up! Store shelves are almost completely devoid of major new titles this week with Disney's Prom, Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family and Christian football drama The 5th Quarter topping the mainstream release list. The story of a family’s reaction to the senseless death of a young son and brother, “The 5th Quarter,” written and directed by Rick Bieber, inspires, heals and transforms. In a time of war, its relevance resonates. Based on real-life events, the film offers a feel-good story and a powerful message — viz, we can get through this together. Though riddled with structural problems, the film offers a cathartic emotional roller coaster that begins with grief and ends with elation.
Taking as its theme how coping with grief is a team effort, the film recounts how after his 15-year-old brother Luke (Stefan Guy) dies in a car crash, Jon Abbate (Ryan Merriman) decides to pull himself out of his alcohol-fueled spiral and, in his brother’s memory, returns to lead Wake Forest...

You may know Ryan Merriman, even if you aren't familiar with the name, from a large body of work when he was a child actor. A staple of the Young Artist Awards from the mid-90s through 2003 for such things as The Pretender, Taken, The Deep End of the Ocean, and more, Ryan is getting more and more ScreenTime in recent years, and may well be one to watch. Recently coming to you in an episode of Smallville, The Ring Two, and Final Destination 3, Ryan teams up now with Party of Five's Lacey Chabert for The Hallmark Channel's Elevator Girl. He's also coming up in quite a few interesting things: The 5th Quarter with Andie MacDowell and Aidan Quinn, The Hard Ride, a western with Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue, just to name a couple scheduled to come out this year.

Rick Bieber, writer-director of "The 5th Quarter," starring Aidan Quinn, Andie MacDowell and Ryan Merriman, is holding an Internet-based talent search to find original songs for the sports-themed film's soundtrack and is accepting submissions at the film's Web site, www.music.the5thquartermovie.com.
The film, produced by Bieber's Angel City Pictures, tells the true story of Wake Forest University middle linebacker Jon Abbate, who, driven by a fatal car crash that took the life of his younger brother Luke, and wearing Luke's No. 5 jersey, helped lead the team to its record 11 wins in 2006.
Bieber and executive producer Bob McCreary set up the Web site to find songs in various genres, including alternative, country, rap, rock and singer-songwriter.

A college football player's tribute to his late brother inspired his team to a record season, and the poignant true story is now headed for the big screen.
Ryan Merriman, Aidan Quinn and Andie MacDowell will play the Abbate family in Rick Bieber's indie drama "The 5th Quarter."
After the family's devastation after 15-year-old Luke Abbate's death in a 2006 car crash and their painful decision to donate his organs to five people, Wake Forest junior Jon Abbate (Merriman) asked his coach to change his jersey number to Luke's number, five. Just before the fourth quarter of each game, the linebacker began holding up five fingers along with his parents, Steven and Maryanne (Quinn and, in final negotiations, MacDowell) as they sat in section five of the stadium.
After news of the personal tribute spread, even opposing players and fans were joining them by the thousands, inspiring the family to...
