  • Overall I enjoyed this movie but I think it was more style than substance. The direction and visuals were excellent - it's possibly worth watching the movie solely for them, especially if that's your kind of thing. The aerial ballet and art exhibit scenes in particular (which you get a hint of in the trailer) were stunning. It's a well-made movie with a sufficient budget.

I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll just say it reminded me of Knowing and Twelve Monkeys - however, compared to those two movies, the stakes felt rather low and the mystery was never particularly compelling, on top of being a little too predictable. I always felt I knew the general direction it was heading, even if I didn't have all the details yet.

So I saw this movie on HBO Max and thought it would be perfect to watch on 2/22/22. And honestly, it was kind of underwhelming. The film follows Dylan, who has something bad happen to him every day at precisely 2:22 p.m. As the film goes on, it becomes clear that these events are somehow tied into a larger event that happened at 2:22 in either the past or the future or maybe even both ;). Overall it wasn't a terrible film, but it was nothing great either. At times I was kind of bored, and I never really cared about the characters. It wasn't the worst movie in the world, though, and there was nothing terrible about it. Just nothing great either. But I'm glad I watched it on 2/22/22. Not sure if I would recommend it, though.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This is one of the few movies where reading the spoilers beforehand will actually improve your viewing experience. So if you haven't seen the movie yet, keep reading and then watch the movie!

    ###Spoilers###

This movie is all style, and no substance. It is about "feeling feelings" of something important going on, its about eternal love in a way, about cosmic fate, maybe a little bit of afterlife mythology and/or simulation theory sprinkled in. But don't keep your hopes up! There will be no resolution whatsoever. If you are looking for some kind of revelation at the end, you will be as disappointed as I was.

But now you know, so you can watch the movie, enjoy the scenes, the beautiful actors and the sparkling atmosphere for what they are (style over substance), and don't feel betrayed when you find out that all those threads were never meant to lead you anywhere.

    Best of luck!
  • My wife and I watched this at home on DVD from our public library.

We see an air traffic controller almost overlook two converging planes, one landing and the other taking off. With quick instincts he manages to barely steer them clear of each other. This happens at 2:22PM.

Next he does something uncharacteristic, he goes to see a beautiful, artful aerial ballet performance, and there he meets a pretty lady. Afterwards they are talking about themselves and it turns out she was on the landing flight that was almost destroyed. He says he almost killed 900 people, she says that he saved her.

As the movie goes on other things happen at 2:22 each day and soon he figures out he has a mystical connection to a time past. And they eventually find out she does too. All in all a good romantic thriller, we found it somewhat better than its current IMDb rating would suggest.

Perhaps as interesting to some of us is the "extra" on the DVD, it discusses and shows how they converted a set in Australia to look exactly like New York's Grand Central Terminal where some key scenes are shot.
  • A story about mysterious set of events that continue happening to one man at 2:22 every single day. Michiel Huisman stars is an air traffic controller from New York losing his job after experiencing a weird flash of light causing him to blank out at 2:22. The plot tells about his experiencing more and more weird events at the same time after he meets a woman, played by Teresa Palmer. This appears being quite a unique idea for a film story overall it's not easy to understand what is exactly going on. Is it the movie the stars or about this guy? Is it something else? The full cast includes Sam Reid, Maeve Dermody, Remy Hii, and Simone Kessell. To sum up an original idea but the result is nothing more than a barely decent entertainment.
  • "2:22" (for 2:22pm) is a star-crossed lovers story as two guys vie for one woman, both 30 yrs ago and present day - to the moment. The "how" is a bit mind-bendy but the "why" is Love and that's what's in focus anyway. Stars Bradley Cooper look-alike Michiel Huisman and she-looks-so-familiar Teresa Palmer who starred in one of her first films, "2:37" - weird, right? Decent afternoon flick to view with your life partner.
  • The star of this film are the screenwriters; Nathan and Stein, who take an incomplete idea and run with it. Unfortunately, when you rush, you sometimes make mistakes. This is one of those times. It is a real shame, and I am sure both writers will have a productive future. But this effort falls short due to the inability of the writers to clearly convey what they are writing about. The character of the air traffic controller is well-developed, but not anyone else. To get an effective chemistry for the audience, one must develop the TWO characters at the same time; not just one and then introduce another one much later. That device does not work, and helps to eventually ruin any connection the audience might have with the later character. This flaw is not the only reason the film is not successful. The premise of time travel (and this is a time travel film in the sense that Groundhog Day was a time travel film) is a difficult premise to work around as a film. Groundhog Day was successful because it had a great actor, Murray, and great comedy situations. This film has no sense of humor, nor does it have any sense of impending repeating events. The audience is intrigued, but then loses interest when there are no compelling examples before the final event of the phenomenon. A good try, but no cigar.
  • This film is okay if you have nothing better to do. The cast, first of all, are beautiful and performing well. The story starts out interesting, but is developing very slowly into something that you'd expect to a be big revelation, while the romance is developing quite nicely.

But after waiting to the end, there's practically nothing revealed. This will get two additional stars from me for the revelation. The six are for the cast, direction and overall production value.
  • Although production values were fine, the story was confused, evolved far too slowly without a sense of progression, and ultimately never came close to an ending that merited the tedious slog through the movie.

My companion for the evening is a big (and tolerant) sci-fi fan, but she was fidgeting early on in the movie, and when a character utters the words, "I'm so sorry about tonight" I could only turn to her and repeat the line.

If you're looking for a thought-provoking sci-fi movie, you can skip this one, and if you are expecting a romance along the lines of The Time Traveler's Wife or The Lake House, the story and performances are just not compelling enough to pull that off.

Sorry, but give it a miss.
  • Don't rush out and rent, buy it or go to the cinema - its not the greatest movie you will ever see but considering its fairly inexperienced cast and budget constraints - you might find yourself happily surprised, its not bad and managed to keep my interest (the gorgeous Teresa Palmer helped as well).

It'll be on Hula, TV or Netflix before you know it - watch it then, when it's raining and there is not much else to do, you might like it.

    Not quite a 7/10.
  • What started out as a promising film with a decent sound track at times and more than average visuals, quickly turned into the film equivalent of autism. It lulls you into a false sense of security thing "hmm you know what this may actually go somewhere"but it just doesn't, then it adds in some more details to make up for the fact it makes absolutely zero sense.

It's like the writers were high, like when you think you have a fantastic idea but really it's just the weed tricking you. The links and Blanks this film expects you to make you need to do as much writing as Dylan does on his glass panels just to make sense of any of it.

I cringed so much at times that my toes pretty much curled up, I'm a huge fan of alternative reality/time loop genre but this film just a random mixture of pointless links which in a random and bizarre way link to a star going supernova,

I'd go as far as saying one of the worst films I've ever seen
  • I have to admit I don't understand the extreme negativity in some of the reviews.....especially considering the amount of uninspired garbage in movie theaters these days.

Now, 2:22 is not a masterpiece, and like most movies it has weaknesses, but its strength is that it builds a sense of suspense without the usual car chases and urban shoot outs that seem to please the ADD crowds so much. The acting is solid (not Oscar material but better than hinted at in many reviews), the direction and special effects are very polished, and, more importantly, the slow accretion of mysterious details and surreal circumstances make it far more interesting, IMO, than most movies currently on offering. I think this movie also does a good job, overall, of hinting at parts of the ending but at the same time maintaining a sense of suspense about how exactly the mysterious events and patterns noticed by the main character will come together.

This is not a realistic thriller, with a clear cut plot and an ending that explains every minor thread or detail in its story, or a relentless action movies with plenty of explosions and other events that ultimately mean nothing, or a bloated love story with SF elements. Hence, I think, the disappointment of some viewers.

The way I see it this is a movie that, despite its imperfections, evolves into a subtle, psychological thriller that hints at man's endless fascination with patterns (in our Universe, in our life, in history etc) and at our sense of wonder of how we fit in it. A movie that while providing us with an interesting story also asks us to add to the plot our own interpretation of the events, and our own sense of wonder about the mystery of our existence.

Now, there is no doubt that other movies on similar topics are superior (12 monkeys and Groundhog day come to mind, among others), but I still think this is one of the few movies worth watching I've seen this year, despite its limitations. At least it asks the watcher to actually engage his brain instead of just switching off and let the explosions roll on until the cardboard cutout bad guy/guys are vanquished.

    7/10
    Good
As a person that watches a lot of movie i easily predicted what was going to happen. It is definitely a good watch and i would definitely recommend watching it. There is some mystery which i really enjoyed as well as the crime solving. The movie is however quite slow. I really like Teresa Palmer and enjoyed her pairing in this movie. Hope to see these two paired again.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The movie is very good at color, music, pictures and leading actors are good for performing and looks elegant in front of the camera. I really enjoyed the aerial ballet scene BUT then those beautiful bubbles blast... The story telling is very very slow and out of focus. I felt I was watching different movies. And when the TRUTH appeared, both me and my partner was saying"This movie is so silly!" Totally pointless and cliché ending. if it was a love theme or talk about ATC workers pressure or any other story line would make this movie worth to watch.
  • This movie will frustrate you at the end, where you are expecting explanations and loose ends tied up, but no - only a lot of confusion that makes absolutely no sense.

Acting was amateur. Writing was worse, and in fairness is perhaps why the actors made such a poor impression on me.

This movie has no point! Zero!
  • The overall story is not very good when you think about it after the film but the engaging first half and the lead pair makes it a good watch. The mystery behind 2:22 and the romantic track of the first half was very well done but throughout the second half there was something missing in the direction or it might be the script going downhill from there. Teresa Palmer and Michiel Huisman are a charming lead pair who managed to keep it interesting even when the script was lacking the power.
  • I really enjoyed this one. It's mysterious and romantic and spiritual. Possibly a little slow-moving but I didn't really mind. I loved that you were questioning throughout the movie whether the guy was insane or just really onto something metaphysical. And the romance was so beautiful and sweet and sweeping. I would definitely watch this again.
  • An American sci-fi drama; A story about an air traffic controller, suspended from his job after a near miss incident, who starts to notice a reoccurence of the conditions that led to his suspension. Drawn into a complex relationship he must figure out a way to take control of time itself. Pattern and repetition and predestination often feature in sci-fi fantasy movie plots. But, when complicated ideas are ill-explained it makes difficult viewing for the circumspect viewer, even one who is prepared to suspend belief. The lead character is a poseur, a man of metropolitan cliché, rushing about carelessly which runs in stark contrast to the traits one associates with an air traffic controller. The love story that ties in with the plot also feels unnatural, and the stylisation feels wrong too with voiceovers which reduce the illusion further.
  • I admit to some surprise seeing so many negative reviews for this American - Australian co - production directed by Australian Paul Currie. I think its an extremely well - acted , well produced film, that should attract those interested in Twilight Zone type mysteries.

Around the time a distant, powerful supernova is suddenly visible to earth observatories, talented JFK Airport air traffic controller Dylan Branson, begins to have visions of a shooting murder taking place at Grand Central Station at 2:22pm. A few days later whilst working at 2:22, he begins to hallucinate, seeing constellations and patterns instead of his surroundings at the airport. This results in a near mid - air collision, only avoided by Dylan coming around in time to use his unique abilities to visualise jet speeds and paths. Nevertheless he is suspended from work for a month and begins to delve into why he is experiencing this sensory overload. In doing so, he meets a woman named Sarah who was a passenger on one of the planes which almost collided.

To be honest I found the first half of the film quite fascinating; right down to the operations in the air traffic tower. I have no idea how realistic they were, but they had the feeling of authenticity. The aerial ballet scenes were terrific too and the meeting of Dylan and Sarah, thankfully lacked any sense of contrivance. Michiel Huisman and Teresa Palmer are outstanding in their respective roles and add the necessary chemistry to the film, to make their budding romance appear really genuine. Huisman, who is Dutch, surprisingly plays his American character more than capably and without a European accent. Palmer just impresses me more, every time I see her. In this movie she plays an alluringly attractive woman, without the slightest hint of over-acting. She has natural star quality.

I admit the narrative in the second - half becomes a bit clunky, with the sudden appearance of a villain, to bring things to a head. His sudden evolution from supporting character, to obsessive, arch bad guy, is a little jarring to say the least, but still no reason to not see 2:22; an intriguing exploration of fate versus. Circumstance and coincidence.
  • This is two hours of my life i wont get back. Why a bunch of Australian actors (speaking in US accents) in an Australian funded movie would shoot a story based in New York is totally beyond me. The location is irrelevant and almost takes away from the story. The central plot about the letters is so labored as to be groan worthy. I kept waiting for some twist in the story - i am still waiting. This is a hackneyed plot that draws from so many other movies is like playing "spot the influence". (A Beautiful Mind plus many others). To top it off it the plot doesn't even make sense. Why, at the climax how does the guy run away from the police who appear to stop chasing him?? And they only fire one shot?? Plate glass windows into Grand Central station? Why does the bad guy do what he does without any warning? Avoid.
  • A film which didn't seem like much, but developed well for those fans of romance more than sci-fi. For a sci-fi, it felt a little strange. Almost had more of a horror angle, which could have been exploited more.

Unmistakably, relationships played a key part in this movie. With career involvement too, the themes were all too real to fit it's genre. In it's own right , tension was built well and the ending was quite a revelation. Again more imagination could have been applied to the plot to make more of this movie. It felt like an unfinished article. The storyline does need improving here. I wouldn't rule out another release of this, after adaptation in future.

The basics were there with good characters, a good plot base, plenty of action, and some relationship engagement.

A specific genre, developed plot, a few more twists and turns, would be needed to turn this good watch to a great one.
  • 2:22,that's as much as you should see about this movie. Or well, if you're expecting some dump plot that might entertain a few people, then watch it, but i can assure you, there's nothing memorable about this film.

The acting wasn't particularly good, the script was simple and predictable, the direction was flat... This is one of those movies that yes, may have the money and resources to make a good project, but just lacks a soul. Let's forget all the things i said before about acting, direction and script, let's just talk about how i felt while watching the film. Did it make me fell...excited? No!, sad? No!, happy? No!, and i could continue but i guess you got my point. The only thing i felt was getting bored and regretting the money i paid in the theater.

PS: Dario, just stay with Danny, she has 3 dragons.
  • Keeping this short, I don't understand why there's so many negative reviews of this flick. I see a repeating pattern for genre movies such as this, in that the sex & explosions popcorn actioner crowd seem to take it personally when they don't understand what's going on.

Above average movies such as this and other hidden gems like "Predestination" get an unfair rap from the instant gratification legions, who seemingly don't like any pointed reminders that they're stupid.

Good casting, locations, cinematography and a breathtaking soundtrack used to the best possible effect make this a welcome addition to the stable of movies that you wouldn't usually watch because of all the naysayers, but are glad you did once you do. Yeah, there's some minor plothole issues and the pacing was a bit confusing at times, but the good far outweighs the bad.

    Watch it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I think the director knew this would be a huge challenge once he/she saw the script. its so complex and methodic. I feel they did a good job with a difficult concept. The effects were amazing. I feel like like the took a page from Jim Carreys movie Number 22. That film in my opinion was executed better in the vein of crazy person obsessed with a numerical concept. But this was still good. Nice Twist at the end. I didn't expect that. Teresa Palmer did a good job, here character was very believable and could of benefited from more presence. I think the male actor could've gave more, but i AM comparing him to Jim Carreys character in Number 22.
  • Soapy cheese fest that don't cohere. Could well have been the script of an 80s music videoclip. Despite the decent enough production value, it can in fact be described as 90 odd minutes of two nice-looking people who fall in love trying (in vain, as far as sound story-telling goes) to find cosmic significance in their feelings. They do so through a mary-go-round story that uses all the trappings of the "stuck in a moment in time" motif without any of the logical puzzles, metaphysical ponderings, or even plain suspense that a situation like that may create. Love proper may reverberate down the ages, but this love affair's photons get trapped in the movie's scripting black hole and never make it out. Utterly forgettable.

5 points to production value but nothing more than this.
