Endeavor Content is in talks to reteam with the filmmakers behind the hit “Blue Miracle,” in the wake of its success on Netflix, where it ranked second on its opening weekend, and is reported to have resonated in the U.S. across all ethnic groups.
Starring a relatively unknown Latino cast, the most high-profile actor in it is Dennis Quaid who plays a washed-up and cantankerous boat captain who reluctantly teams up with a guardian, played by Jimmy Gonzales (“Mayans M.C.”), and some of his charges from a cash-strapped orphanage in order to win a lucrative fishing tournament.
“Judging from the online chatter, it was seen in middle America so it not only appealed to Latino families,” said Alexis Garcia, executive VP, Endeavor Content, Advisory, Film Group, who describes it as an inspirational sports movie.

Freestyle Love Supreme, the improvisational rap musical revue co-created by Lin-Manuel Miranda, is returning to Broadway’s Booth Theatre for a strictly limited three-month engagement in October, producers announced today.
“If live theater is coming back, so is Fls,” said Miranda, who co-created the show with Thomas Kail and Anthony Veneziale. “Our most important collaborator is the audience, and we can’t wait to get back in the Booth.”
The limited engagement begins Thursday, October 7, and runs through Sunday, January 2, 2022.
“We are thrilled to be back on Broadway and part of this theatrical community we love so much,” said Kail, who directs. “The immediacy of our show, with its content driven by audience suggestion, makes it one of the rare shows that can speak to whatever is happening in the moment.”
The production’s core performers will include Andrew Bancroft Aka Jelly Donut, Tarik Davis Aka Tardis Hardaway, Aneesa Folds Aka Young Nees,...

While Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and others dominated the Grammy Awards nominations announced today, a number of names more associated with the film and TV worlds also made the cut. Among those vying for statuettes on Music’s Biggest Night next year are Jerry Seinfeld, Tiffany Haddish, Meryl Streep, Rachel Maddow, Jeopardy! Goat Ken Jennings and Spike Jonze.
Five folks who are familiar to TV audiences are up for Best Comedy Album this year: Seinfeld (23 Hours to Kill), Haddish (Black Mitzvah), Patton Oswalt (I Love Everything), Jim Gaffigan (The Pale Tourist) and Bill Burr (Paper Tiger). Oswalt is the only one of the bunch with a Grammy to his credits — among six noms. Gaffigan landed his sixth career nomination, and Seinfeld has his fourth. This is Haddish’s second nom, following a spoken-word mention in 2018, and Burr lands his first.

For years, the Freestyle Love Supreme experience was a “completely ephemeral” one, as founding member Thomas Kail puts it. Only those in the small, usually 99-seat, theaters who witnessed one of the hip-hop improv group’s shows live shared in the unique memory and magic of what they delivered. But through Andrew Fried’s documentary “We Are Love Supreme,” debuting on Hulu July 17, some of those performances have been given more permanence.
“It was like we were writing poetry and lighting it on fire. And later we ended up writing a couple of novels and people liked our novels,” Kail, who also executive produced the documentary, says of the difference between Freestyle Love Supreme’s shows and “In The Heights” and Hamilton.” “We thought, ‘Well, what if we go back and show them some of the poetry we wrote?’ It informed and infused the novels.”

Utkarsh Ambudkar is probably best known as Donald from the Pitch Perfect franchise, the resident smooth-talkin’ beatboxer of the acapella group the Treblemakers. He also appeared in The Mindy Project as Mindy Kaling’s younger brother. His other film and TV credits include the comedy feature Brittany Runs a Marathon, the IFC series Brockmire and he lends his voice to the Disney Junior animated series Mira, Royal Detective. A surefire way to further sate your appetite for “Hamilton” (now on Disney+) and “In the Heights” (in theaters next year), Andrew Fried’s “We Are Freestyle Love Supreme” is a fond look back at Lin-Manuel Miranda’s other other claim to fame, an improv rap collective that was started by some dorky college boys back in 2005 and wound up changing the face of Broadway over the decade that followed. More accurately, ; Fried himself is a key part of that friendship, and his gentle time capsule prioritizes fondness over intimacy in a way that makes you feel like you’re watching someone write in his buddies’ yearbook. But if the film never aspires to be any heavier than one of Fls’ unscripted comedy shows, it would be wrong to write it off as a fans-only proposition — not when Fried so palpably captures the universal thrill of going out into the...

Lin-Manuel Miranda is currently living in the past. Or maybe it’s that, at this particular moment in time, the past just seems to keep catching up with him, tapping him on the shoulder, nudging him in the ribs. The 40-year-old playwright/actor/director/producer has spent the previous week watching Hamilton — the musical about one of our nation’s founding fathers that went from off-Broadway hit to Broadway gamechanger to cultural phenomenon — once again become a heavily debated, must-see national obsession, courtesy of a four-year-old idea. Utkarsh Ambudkar (Brittany Runs a Marathon) has been tapped as the male lead opposite Rose McIver in Ghosts, CBS’ single-camera comedy pilot from Joe Port & Joe Wiseman, Lionsgate Television, BBC Studios and CBS Television Studios.
Written by Port and Wiseman based on the British series, Ghosts follows a young couple, Samantha (McIver) and Ryan (Ambudkar), whose dreams come true when they inherit a beautiful country house, only to find it’s both falling apart and inhabited by many of the deceased previous residents.
Ambudkar’s Ryan, Sam’s husband, is a thoroughly modern dude with a love of nerdom and a talented chef. In addition to McIver, he joins previously cast Rebecca Wisocky and Brandon Scott Jones.
Finding a male lead for Ghosts has been a priority for CBS over the last couple of months. As everyone has been at home and social distancing, the network employed Zoom chemistry reads with McIver among other tools.

Improv hip-hop group We Are Freestyle Love Supreme has postponed its self-titled documentary release out of solidarity with protesters nationwide.
The postponement comes two days before it was set to begin streaming on Hulu. Its announcement said its “collective attention” has been moved to is turned toward more pressing concerns.
We Are Freestyle Love Supreme is a documentary on the off-Broadway show that Miranda and several of his Hamilton collaborators regularly staged before the successes of In the Heights and Hamilton. The film chronicles the group’s reunion for a Broadway run that concluded earlier this year.
No new release date was announced.
“Today our country, our world struggles to reach an end to this systemic racial injustice, intolerance, police brutality and hate,” Freestyle Love Supreme said in a statement on Twitter. “We add our voices to that fight.”

Improvisational theater is described at various times in We Are Freestyle Love Supreme as an adrenalized, unsafe situation and a unique communion among the performers and the audience. That excitement and immediacy comes across in Andrew Fried's lovingly assembled documentary record of the hip-hop improv group's 15-year evolution. Touching on the influence of the wildly talented collective's work on bigger projects like In the Heights and Hamilton, the film amply channels the drive and enthusiasm of Fls co-founder Lin-Manuel Miranda. What's most refreshing, though, is its egalitarian appreciation of the distinctive gifts of the entire crew — not ...
