  • Warning: Spoilers
I read through a bunch of the other reviews-- but then decided to give it a try and an open mind.

Alas. . .the other reviewers are right.

HOWEVER. . . IF you have NEVER seen "Prince of Darkness" and you and your Girlfriend just want something lite and a little gory for a Saturday Night Horror flick-- This DOES qualify as a passable thriller rental pick. If that's all you want-- READ NO FURTHER. Put the DVD in the player and enjoy. Fried Chicken and Pop goes nicely with this. And the Girlfriend can talk all she wants. To you. To her Cellphone. To her Mom. . .it doesn't matter.

BUT IF YOU ARE A SERIOUS CRITIC OF THE RELIGIOUS HORROR SUB-GENRE on the other hand. . .Read On--

First-- the Title of the Movies tells you ALL you need to know- so there's no suspense in finding out what it's all about.

Two-- Lack of consistency. A military extraction team such as was portrayed here was so in-effective, so undisciplined, so un-cohesive as to make a drill sergeant scream with shame and anguish. By the time the Asian gal went chasing after the little girl in the white dress --AGAIN!-- I threw my hands up in disgust. They might as well have someone chase a cat into a dark room and crouch down and go: "Here, kitty-kitty-kitty!"

Three-- Location and Setup inconsistency. If this was a deep ARCHAEOLOGICAL excavation somewhere in a Desert-- why would someone build an entire REFINERY FACTORY half a mile UNDERGROUND?

Four-- By the time you start pulling together the priests, the zombies, the devil in the Ice and the periodic blathering of scripture, that was a sideshow to the idiotic one by one luring off of the mission team members to be seduced and stabbed and vomited on. By this time, it long stopped being suspenseful. Instead, you are sitting there going "Yeah-yeah-yeah, just get on it with it!"

Five-- Mack's Past Flashbacks became meaningless and wasted.

Six-- This movie was a rip off of "Prince of Darkness". And "Prince of Darkness" did it better. WAY better. By the first 20 minutes, I was hoping that this movie would be an attempt to take the "Prince of Darkness" concept to a new level, just on the military side-- but they stumbled off into the proverbial dark.

Fact is-- today-- if you're going to try and render the story of the Battle of Heaven and Fallen Angels in a modern, non-religious plot-- you must have a savvy, coherent, intelligent script that can mix in SERIOUS theology, historical bits and science together into something the viewer can see as plausible. Because this is one of those topics that really shouldn't be done unless you're willing to do it WELL.
  • To have such an actor as Cuba G in this type and caliber of movie should be insulting. I can understand wanting to break the stereotype of characters he is prone too but this part in this movie is a HUGE leap in the wrong direction. A once A-List actor turned to terrible class B horror? This movie was by far a waist of 90 minutes of my life that I surely will never get back. The lines were typical, the action over played and the only glimmer of promise came from a semi-unique story line that fails to provide the depth one might look for in a movie. My rating is poor at best. I can only hope that the rest of the cast find better work, even if its in the food service industry.
  • Really bad!!! Why actors such as Cuba G Jnr, Ray Winstone and Ron Pearlman (who i think is highly under-rated) would put their talents into this piece of crap is beyond me!! The acting is cheezy at bast, and down right awful at worst. The story is lame, the writing is lamer... Full of clichéd one liners that weren't even funny in the eighties and the characters are so 2 dimensional it isn't even funny.

If i didn't know better i'd think i was watching an Uwe Boll film.

I know films like this aren't made to win Oscars but the writer could have at least but a bit of effort into it, instead of recycling every cheezy 80's action B movies lines putting them into this film!!!
  • I don't know where to begin with this flick. Maybe here: Soldiers who don't at all act & move like trained soldiers, female soldiers with make-up on while in combat, some third rate CGI effects that I could do on my PC in fifteen minutes, and enough plot-holes and unexplained crap to lose count of fairly fast.

In fairness, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Bill Mosely made the film ALMOST watchable. But those two alone couldn't save the horrid storyline, and the above-mentioned things. I tried very hard to get past some of the issues that I found with this film, but it was to no avail. After 48 minutes I found myself being thankful that I was more than half way into the film.

I thought years ago (in the 80's) that low-end horror flicks couldn't get any more lame, but was DEAD WRONG. It is sad to see someone as talented as the Oscar winning Cuba Gooding taking roles in such ridiculous movies. I hope that his appearance in this one didn't ruin his career long-term.

  • Watch out guys - the review saying this movie is "surprisingly" good - is being sarcastic! - it's actually pretty dead on if you're in on the joke - maybe I'm just slow, but I did not get it - and now it's too late - I've wasted my time on this pile of s...! I guess a movie titled " The Devil's Tomb" is never gonna be Oscar material, but I still expected some kind of dumb entertainment of some sort - but what a letdown! Only fun to be had is trying to keep track of all the dumb moves this crew of "elite" soldiers pull off. It's truly a special team Cuba Gooding has managed to form here - there's a rookie on board too - everyone makes fun of him - but he might just be the wisest of the bunch. Speaking bout rookie stuff - this movie is just so poorly made that it's impossible to get into on any kind of level! What I'm trying to say is: whatever You do - DON'T waste your time on this one!
  • Warning: Spoilers
This movie was terrible and it's a real shame because the cast is good. The main problem was the script that had no character development at all. The first 10 minutes of the film are really slow and nothing is added to the story.

All we see is a supposed elite military force acting like children and insulting each other and moaning about the mission. If they had spent this time introducing the characters and their relationships with each other then I might have maybe cared a little about what happens to them.

I get the feeling the writer of this movie had recently seen Event Horizon, Doom and Mutant Chronicles and basically copied any ideas that this movie does have from there, this film isn't as good as any of them though.

The annoying flashbacks that occur regularly for Cuba Gooding Jr. character are badly portrayed and fail at explaining the relationship between Cuba and Ray Winstone.

The Military unit act completely unprofessionally and don't watch each others backs at all and keep wondering off alone. It is like they have received no military training at all.

The intent and abilities of the 'ancient evil' is barely even touched on and left me very underwhelmed. This movie isn't at all scary and has no shocks or plot twists.

I could go on all day about the plot wholes and bad script. It was just such a shame that they wasted a good cast on such a bad script. Avoid this movie and watch Event Horizon instead.
  • Okay! So when does the real movie start? Hi, to whoever is reading this? 2009 has seen some pretty good comebacks such as “Righteous Kill” with Robert De Niro and Al Pachino, so in that sense I was hoping for such a comeback from Cuba Gooding. The guy performed marvelously in “Men of Honor” and showed talent in “Pearl Harbor” but when I read the plot of his last movie I got the shivers. “The Devil’s tomb” revolves around the idea of an elite group of soldiers that are on a covert mission to retrieve a scientist from an underground lab encounter an ancient evil in the facility. Hmm…kinda sound like “Resident evil” + “The Exorcist”, but what the heck, innocent until proved guilty as the saying goes. When I started watching the movie I was stunned at the silly plot, empty conversations, bad actors play , the bad effects and cheesy make up. The satanic element was supposed to be an attention-grabber but for me it was a completely the opposite. Its not that I don’t like these kinds of movies , I actually enjoy them but this time I was just …Irritated would be the right word I guess. The dark and satanic were completely lacking and what was left were religious zombies that spat goo on “elite” soldiers. It’s a low- budget project so that should be an excuse for some of the blunders but the actors just made me feel as though they played only for as much money as they received. They had no feeling, no will to make a good role. It was as if they had a hard time getting up when they thought of their roles. Even Cuba Gooding, of whom I had such good impressions, disappoints with his performance. The sexually charged scenes were actually ruined , in my opinion, by some disgusting moments ( the make up…) In conclusion I would like to say that this is a movie that will irreversibly waste one and a half hours of your live. Heck, the movie is not really worth the reading of this review. So, NO ,I don’t recommend it to anyone. STAY CLEAR of this movie even if there is nothing else to watch.

The Devil’s Tomb: 4 out of 10: Not since “Killer Flood: The Day the Dam Broke” has a movie’s title rendered about eighty percent of the plot development mute. Dumbass spoiler alert… Hey, the mysterious underground archaeological site turns out to be a tomb. Whose tomb you ask? (IN MY BEST CHURCH LADY VOICE) “Could it be Satan???”.

Okay so it is a remake of Prince of Darkness, but with the Space Marines from Aliens after a tragic mass lobotomization. Look, I realize that not every American soldier is a fully-fledged genius; but how any of these thunderheads managed to make it through basic, without throwing the pin, is anyone’s guess. (When you pull a pin on a grenade, you theoretically have a choice to throw one of two things. Most people choose the grenade part.) The script is to blame. Since the soldiers simply are not believable, the rest of the film falls apart; (Not that the script improves all that much when the mumbo-jumbo starts.) This is a shame because the acting is game. Now when you have Cuba Gooding Jr., Ray Winstone, Ron Perlman and even Taryn Manning (who really surprised me with a fun performance.); you are going to have decent acting. Throw in a fun Henry Rollins as a priest bit and an over the top performance by Bill Moseley and you have one of the best-acted B movies this year. Only Franky G drops the ball, in an horribly written role, as the dumb muscle.

The direction is by Jason Connery, best known* as Bennington in the TV Series "Mary-Kate and Ashley in Action!”. The direction is serviceable, though he really needed a military adviser on set; or, at the very least, someone who has played paintball. The actors did not seem to know what to do with their rifles and kept pointing them at each other. In addition, if you are firing a kill shot you want to line it up AWAY from the hostage.

Special effects and other items are okay. Heck there is even a lesbian subplot that threatens to make the movie interesting (Though the script drops the ball on that as well.) If you can get through the first twenty minutes without your eyes rolling out of your head, The Devil’s Tomb turns into a collection of interesting performances looking for a purpose. And figuring out who is buried in the Devil’s tomb will not keep most people entertained. (And no it isn’t Ulysses S Grant).

*He is the son of Scottish actor Sean Connery who played the old Spaniard in the Highlander movies during the Eighties.
  • Essentially, it's another one of those "US Soldiers release another monster in Iraq" movies. This time, it's a "fallen angel" called a Nephilim...

Of course, they get stuff wrong, like saying the "Hebrews" is in the Old Testament (It's actually in the New) or that a Military doctor would have the rank of Sergeant. (Actually, military doctors are commissioned officers.)

Cuba Gooding is just sad, because he used to be a promising actor. Now he's sharing a stage with a bunch of no-names. Ron Perleman phones it in for another session... The story has all the depth of a video game...
  • It really is embarrassing to see an Oscar winner such as Cuba Gooding Jr. and other talented veterans wasting their time with such third rate material. Even horror lovers willing to check out just about anything may grow weary of this one, as it's stuff we've all seen before. It's religion / apocalypse theme nonsense (directed by Sean Connery's son Jason) with dumb, dumb characters, supposedly playing a crack Special Forces team, recruited to probe the mystery of what happened at an underground installation / archaeological dig. Cuba's character Captain Mack is the guy in charge, and it's dispiriting to see him look so weary, and clearly thinking, "Can someone please rescue me from this junk?"

The rest of the cast doesn't fare any better, despite the presence of some familiar faces. Among those on Cuba's team are Zack Ward, Jason London, and Franky G. The female cast members - Taryn Manning, Valerie Cruz, and Stephanie Jacobsen - are all attractive, but watching them fails to add much appeal to this thing. Bill Moseley, Ray Winstone, and Ron Perlman are all slumming badly here; Perlman, certainly, looks like he couldn't care less. So why should the viewer? Not even the brief nudity supplied by Holly Weber, or the casting of Henry Rollins as a priest, is really reason enough to sit through this. There is enough gore and grossness on hand to allow for some amusement.

Badly written, badly directed, and totally lacking in suspense and excitement, "The Devil's Tomb" couldn't even get up to average level, even for a B movie lover such as this viewer.

    Four out of 10.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This movie is certainly not as bad as most people are making it out to be. The acting is good, the script is decent, the story, locations, special effects and direction are all above average. The movie itself looks and feels like a big budget production, with only a few minor weaknesses showing up every so often.

The biggest weakness comes in the form of casting where the Medic is concerned. She neither looks or acts the part of a trained soldier but it's forgivable because the rest of the cast is solid enough. There are few mistakes in gear and weapons (most notably weapons handling) but nothing so obvious that you can't watch the film. The watches will catch you off guard if your a fan of military movies and the bit with soldiers disobeying orders gets a little tired but it's nothing you can't look past.

The subject matter of the film might upset some, as might the gore and violence, but anyone watching a horror film should expect all of the above and quite possibly worse. If your looking for a comfortable little movie to snuggle up and watch with your lover, you might want to pick up the latest Jennifer Aniston fare and stop looking at horror movies.

It's hard to say much about the plot because the title of the movie is misleading and I believe that was intentional so I don't want to ruin the film for anyone. I will say the actual plot is a bit of a surprise and there's a sub-plot involving Cuba Gooding's character which, when resolved, will also be a surprise. It's worth noting that there are scenes where the soldiers who enter the facility are tempted. Some of those scenes could easily be seen as offensive and I think they have a lot to do with why some people really dislike this movie. In particular there's a lesbian scene which I'm sure put some people off who may have been expecting one of those "clean" religious based movies. Not that I think there's anything wrong with that type of movie, but this isn't one of them.

All in all this is a genuinely good movie and well worth watching if your not weak stomached and your not put off by religious themes or other touchy subjects. It's a great movie and it certainly doesn't deserve to be trashed because the story, acting and production values are all simply to good to ignore.

If you like movies along the lines of Prince Of Darkness (1987), End Of Day's (1999) or even Constantine (2005) then I think you'll get into this. If your looking for something like Left Behind (2000), your barking up the wrong tree.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Unlike most people commenting on this title, I was not disappointed. Not in the slightest. I knew what to expect from a straight-to-DVD feature. The only reason I bothered to watch this was a chance to see Henry Rollins "acting" again. I am a big fan of his spoken word performances, but acting is a whole other story. The man just can't act, and this fact is somehow quite endearing.

Speaking of acting, the rest of the crew isn't that bad. They try very hard to make the most of absurd script and terrible dialogue. Cuba Gooding plays well as usual, Stephanie Jacobsen is also very good, Zack Ward carries out his usual role of an annoying prick perfectly. The rest of the crew did not really impress. Even Ron Perlman can't be considered a star, for he only sporadically appears in the film, and doesn't interact with other actors until the very end.

Overall, the movie is appalling. I'd give it 1 out of 10, but it gets two additional stars for the scene in which Cuba Gooding's character orders his men to gag the priest played by Rollins just to shut him up. Does anyone believe that this scene wasn't written with Rollins in mind?

    Warning: Spoilers
Cuba Gooding Jr.'s recent string of straight to DVD failures have been far cry's to his roles in Jerry McGuire or Shadow Boxer. But I was pleasantly surprised at The Devil's Tomb, and I found myself thinking; "Maybe Cuba hasn't gone all the way under after all."

First, the Story. Second, the Acting. Third, the Action.

The Story- Mack (Gooding Jr.) leads a group of Special Forces guys and gals into a creepy underground facility to find a scientist who has presumably been part of some kind of freaky experiment (This role was played by Ron Perlman, of Hellboy fame). As the film progresses, Mack and his team will discover all sorts of scary things, ranging from a creepy little girl to a creepier Bill Moseley.

The Acting- Cuba is great in this, he played a great sullen character who led his team, who have their own back stories. Besides Cuba and Perlman, the cast also includes Ray Winstone, who appears in an interesting flashback. Bill Moseley is interesting as well, appearing as one of the scientists Mack and his team are sent to recover.

The Action- For first time director Jason Connery, not bad. Sean Connery's son gives us a couple classic gore scenes, where the victim explodes upon being shot. He has also given us a decent set. I never found myself thinking that the characters were in a warehouse somewhere, shooting this film. I was impressed with the effects.

I'd watch The Devil's Tomb again.
  • Take ideas and plot points from Alien, Aliens, Event Horizon, and (especially) Prince of Darkness and add some absurdity, sprinkle with blood and implausible characters and this is what you get.

Those were all vastly better films but this isn't quite as horrible as some junk on SyFy so if it's free to watch you could do worse. I gave it a 5 due to some familiar faces in the cast and the job they do and the average-looking blood and gore. Story-wise they didn't seem to put much effort into it besides "adapting" from better movies. Also amusing were the military tactics used in the Iraq flashbacks but I'm not sure they meant for me to chuckle during the battle scenes.

If you want a much better film along the same lines, watch Prince of Darkness instead and during the slow parts imagine space marines using electronic trackers that never seem to work, dodging acid-spewing creatures while running into long-dead loved ones without wondering how they happened to be there. The 5 is generous in my opinion but this could have been a lot worse.
  • Appallingly bad. I really wanted to like a movie directed by Sean Connery's kid, but there was nothing redeemable in this "effort". It wasn't just disappointing to see the great Ron Perlman and Cuba Gooding Jr. in this piece of dreck, it was actually depressing. The script is about what you'd expect from someone with Keith Kjorne's resume - utterly devoid of any sense. The dialogue is unintentionally funny and the sets and effects are cheap and cheesy. While this combination occasionally - but nonetheless rarely - produces a movie that at least has some camp value, such is not the case here.

In short, The Devil's Tomb makes such movies as Terminal Invasion or The Woods or any of the Phantasm series look like high art. What a stinker.
  • I shall keep this quick and simple, this is they worst film I have ever viewed !! No exaggeration this movie is truly brutal. How this was ever given the thumbs up to be made is beyond me, and why the cast agreed to take part in this, I will never know? The writer should be publicly flogged and Connerys effort at directing, is similar to his acting roles, poor and forgettable!!

Please watch this, if only to see for yourself how truly awful it is, script, acting, so on and so on,everything is bad bad bad, I am still in awe at how bad this is, every one involved should be ashamed with themselves !
  • Warning: Spoilers
This movie is a waste of time to watch if you ask me. The acting is awful and the plot is thinner than water.

Before watching it i was told it was a scary movie with a lot of gore and killing as you would expect from horror movie about some soldiers going into a saving mission 900m under the earths surface. The director is given a plot a lot like resident evil, but he throws it away like a pitcher with a baseball. He tries to make it scary by putting in some little girls Japanese style but it just doesn't work.

There's a serious lack of gore in this movie and the only semi-good acting is provided by Cuba Gooding. If anyone disagrees you are welcome to comment on this..
  • Directed by Robin of Sherwood, a.k.a. Jason Connery (son of Sean Connery) and lasting 1hr and 30mins this film is wedged into the Action, Horror, Sci-Fi, Thriller category.

When the credits to this film were rolling I got mildly excited thinking that there were some big names in this and that it would be a decent film. Unfortunately it didn't live up to my expectations as the plot was predictable, the action was lame and the effects were cheap. Cuba Gooding Jr heads up a Special Ops team which includes Taryn Manning, Franky G, Zack Ward, Brandon Fobbs, Stephany Jacobsen and Jason London they have been hired by Dr Elissa Cardell (Valerie Cruz) who wants to rescue her father Ron Perlman who is in a top secret scientific/military bunker. The troops are your average gung-ho grunts while Cuba Gooding acts as their moral compass despite experiencing random flashbacks to a previous conflict where Ray Winstone, his commanding officer, was killed. Winstone's death is explored in flashbacks but only adds to confuse the film rather than add to it. The team enter the facility and are attacked by various mutated zombies including Bill Moseley and Weston Blakesley. As they make their way through the facility an evil presence keeps trying to stop them and separate them with a view of killing them off one by one. It transpires that the evil in the institute is a fallen and outcast angel or seraphim that appears to be frozen in ice . Despite being frozen 1000m underground it's casting an evil spell over anybody nearby and weak enough in an attempt to escape the institute. If the seraphim can get out of it's temporary cell it can endanger the entire world but first it needs a host body. Unbeknown to the special ops team from the start, Ron Perlman, whom they are trying to save is the chosen host for the fallen angel which puts an additional complication in their way, mind you, the story that Dr Cardell has weaved isn't all that true and honest anyway so an extra complication is nothing. Along the way the team encounter weird visions, random temptations and even Henry Rollins who's playing a priest.

The acting in this isn't by a long way convincing, it's actually Ron Perlman that seems the most convincing and he's only in 15% of the film, by contrast Henry Rollins character is the least believable for me. The effects in the film look like they came straight out of home production with rice crispies and corn syrup used to show an infected character. The plot could have unfolded in so many better ways but didn't, instead it went for the cheap solution of random sexual tension, lesbianism, and painful memories. The characters are trapped and brought down far too easily, for a hardened special ops team you'd at least expect them to learn from their first mistakes let alone continuously make the same mistakes. Naked woman from porn magazines don't just appear in an underground institute!! Unborn foetus' can't suddenly be 10 years old, recognisable and in a top secret research facility without some motivation or set up!!!

Despite the negatives of this film I have been watching a lot of really poor films of late, perhaps that is the reason why I'm still giving this 3 out of 10, ultimately it's bad but it's not as bad as some of the other rubbish I've seen of late. You got lucky devil's tomb.

    Warning: Spoilers
I won't bother recounting the story background, I just want to vent about the many things I thought were unforgivably stupid:

    1. The book of Hebrews is in the New Testament, morons.

    2. Don't write your script about a deep subterranean ancient site and then shoot it on a set that looks like a generic basement boiler room/custodian's office.

    3. The team is supposedly a mercenary unit, but lots of dialog as the movie grinds along makes it sound like they are on active duty with the government. Note that I don't even have to get into a critique of their skill or behavior to find a fatal flaw.

    4. Would an ancient religious order dedicated to preserving the entrapment of an ancient evil have so many members who look like generic modern-day clerics? Wouldn't something with monastic robes and ancient holy weapons have been more fun? Why do half of them look like scientists and half like Father Central Casting? Are they here to fight the evil or study it? The movie can't make up its mind and probably doesn't know.

    5. Cuba Gooding's flashback is supposedly critical to his character, but it rehashes the same footage endlessly, only revealing about 2 seconds of new info each time. When the "big reveal" comes it's nothing that earth-shaking, and feels empty because of a total lack of context or consequences, other than "he once did something he's ashamed of," but doled out like it's going to be as vital as the Zapruder film or something.

    6. Why don't all the bad guys leave while the mercs are stumbling around getting killed?

    7. How many nephilim are there in this particular location? The script sets it up as one, then says "we" and "they" an awful lot. And not in a context where it makes sense that all nephilim around the world are being discussed.

    8. What is the threat? Seduction by evil? Madness? Are the sores and the black gook just a symptom or a part of the corruption process? Once again, the script doesn't know or care. One minute the gook burns like acid, the next it makes you into a demon foot-soldier.

A horror/action/suspense film that plays in the unfilled areas of the theological map can be awesome. The first Prophecy film is a sterling example. But you have to do your homework. Know something about both orthodox religion and its heretical offshoots before you start playing with alternative histories and theologies. The random, bland, conspiracy pap spouted by this script is indefensible. "It's all a game! They're playing us for fools! They're just playing both sides against the middle! Everything you believe is a lie!" Yawn.
  • Warning: Spoilers
You don't get 2 minutes into the actual movie before you realize this is supposed to be a military operation written by people who have no clue what they are doing. We are introduced to an allegedly 'elite' team in which one of the vets is pointing his gun persistently at the 'rookie' on the team to tease him. Such acts of stupidity are not tolerated among those familiar with guns, let alone the military, let alone an elite unit. Not only that, but we have a mixed team with women wearing makeup and everybody is smarting off and ignoring orders, and back-talking.

Throughout the film people are wandering off aimlessly, pursuing hallucinations repeatedly (are they incapable of learning?), firing wildly, and whining pointlessly. Gooding does little to maintain discipline or control, and is subjected to constant and repetitive flashbacks that show the same scene over and over with little variation.

After a brief interval you are mostly wondering if anyone can be this stupid. Throw in a lot of gore, brief but unenticing nudity, a lesbian undercurrent and a bunch of religious mumbo jumbo and call it a wrap.

I disagree with those who thought Gooding did a good job of acting. He seemed to be walking around in a daze and he was supposed to be the leader. Completely unconvincing. And for that matter so was everyone else.

I've seen worse movies, but not many. Unless you must see it on a dare or because you want to see every last religious horror flick or Gooding, you are better off passing this one up. It just isn't worth the time.
  • This movie is just terrible. I don't know the name of the guy that wrote the script but my advice to him, STOP WRITING!!! This is just terrible! Not one good thing about it. He allegedly received 75.000 dollar's for this script if you can even call it that way. I don't know who gave him that money but i wouldn't take the script if he was giving it to me for free. If you want to see how bad a movie can be than see this movie, otherwise... I really don't know where to start with this comment or what to write about specifically since absolutely everything about it is bad. I just don't get it how did they get a basically good cast to star in it. Okay, Perlman will act in everything just as Cuba Gooding in the last couple of years but what was going through Ray Winstones head when he said 'yes' to this part since his career has never been better than now. I also don't know what's with the director. Do you know that Woody Allen movie 'Hollywood Ending' in which he is a director that goes blind in the middle of the shooting and stuff. Well, i honestly think that a blind guy would have been a better director than this one. This is like Edward Wood and Uwe Boll together. OK, maybe i'm overreacting a bit but this guy definitely deserves his place on their list.

    ---------------------------------

Avoid this movie under any cost! There is nothing good about it. Not even the basically good cast. Terrible acting all around. I won't even mention writing and directing again. SIMPLY TERRIBLE! One of the worst movies i've ever seen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ---------------------------------

There is only one more thing bothering me, I REALLY CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHO WAS SMART ENOUGH TO ''BUDGET'' THIS MOVIE(cr.p)!!!???
  • I think this is another case of I didn't see the movie but the trailer looks like crap as far as the reviewers go. But i'm here to tell you not to believe what they say and give this film a chance it really is surprisingly good. Now this movie as i'm sure we all know stars Cuba Gooding Jr. along with a few other big names like Ron Perlman, and Ray Winstone, then some smaller familiar faces like Jason London and Taryn Manning. And I think that right there the big cast either has many people with high expectations or wishing this was a bigger movie than it is. Now Cuba leads a group of soldiers on a rescue mission to get professor Ron Perlman out of this underground research lab during the war in Iraq (im pretty sure i don't recall hearing where they are) the effects are mostly very realistic there is not much CGI which is pretty good to see since nowadays too many horror movies are loaded with CGI. One thing you have to keep in mind is that this movie is digusting and i mean disgusting there are a few gross out scenes in this that may make it hard for you to watch, for example the characters who get infected with the black stuff get boils and its absolutely disgusting the boils puss and there's another scene that includes kissing and sucking boils so keep that in mind. Another thing here is that this movie involves religion also which both does and doesn't surprise me (cause of the name and cause well it didn't look like it at first weird i know). There is plenty of gunfire lots of blood so creepy scenes and likable characters like Click (the computer hacker probably my favorite character) I really urge you to check this one out especially if you like Resident evil 1, and Doom there is plenty to like here then. 8/10
  • Although this film touches on some interesting ideas it completely gets wrong what the Nephelim are-and it is not so hard to research such information-that in and of itself is a bit embarrassing to see and it would tend to spoil the film as the entire premise becomes ridiculous as a result. Any film that has Henry Rollins in it usually is not very good and this is no exception. Disappionting for Cuba Gooding fans in a big way, also excessively gory in places. (the Nephelim are what supposedly happened when 12 angels had offspring with some humans something like 10000 years ago-their offspring supposedly numbered 300, and they were very large people-who supposedly lived in northern India in 30 different villages-the lifespan of a Nephelim was several hundred years)
  • Warning: Spoilers
You know how some folks tell you a thing is really bad and you go see for yourself, not expecting much, and you're pleasantly surprised that it's actually good. Well that's what all the bad reviews of this flick did for me.

I thot I would check it out for Cuba Gooding whose career has always been a bit erratic, and much to my pleasure I saw a well made creepy thriller/horror. I feel sorry for all the actors who really do good work in this film and who may not get credit for it on account of the less than stellar reviews. Gooding, Perlman, Winstone, and the others all do as good as they've done in other, more highly praised, work. It's a low budget film, most of the story is interiors, small rooms and corridors, but what creepy scary rooms they are. At any moment something may jump out at you. Its flaws are the ending is a little metaphysical - I'd prefer more explosives and bullets and less words, and what is almost a law of nature for these sort of flicks - the dumb people who wander off alone down a dark hall, but where would horror/thriller/mystery flicks be without them. Anyway, I hope you give this film a chance. You just might enjoy it.
  • What could go wrong in a movie starring Cuba Gooding Jr., Ron Perlman and Henry Rollins? Just about everything.

The narrating style at the start and end, like some sort of series pilot or something, was a dead give away. Both Ron Perlman and Henry Rollins just have episodic roles while Cuba plays the most unmilitary special team leader I have ever seen. And the plot is sickening in both the clichés and its stupidity.

There is only one thing worst than a bad movie: a pretentious bad movie that is boring and tries to fool you watching it through casting and other artifices of marketing. Only one thing could have saved this film: seeing Stephanie Jacobsen naked. It didn't happen.
