Nicole Kidman Has Now Worked With 27 Women Directors in 8 Years; She Urges ‘Financial Mentors’ to Invest in Unknown Female Filmmakers and ‘Take a Risk’
Image
Nicole Kidman has touched down at the Cannes Film Festival, where she is set to receive the Woman in Motion Award from Kering chairman and CEO François-Henri Pinault, Cannes president Iris Knobloch and festival director Thierry Fremaux. Ahead of the awards dinner, Kidman joined Variety’s Angelique Jackson for a Kering Woman in Motion talk in which the Oscar winner spoke passionately about her commitment to uplifting female directors.

It was in 2017 when Kidman made a public vow to work with a woman director every 18 months. She had no idea if that would even be possible, but she was determined to see it through. And see it through she has. In the last eight years, plus factoring in her current projects in development, Kidman has teamed up with 27 female directors across her her various film and television projects.

“I was going to make it possible,” Kidman said during the Kering talk about her vow.

Practical Magic 2 will feature one big Star Trek name and could add two Trek guests
Image
The fantasy-romance film Practical Magic opened more than 25 years ago, in 1998, to be precise. Despite the fact that it bombed at the box office, its fans transformed the movie into a cult classic and continually nudged Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel. Well, it’s officially happening. A sequel is in the works, with some major involvement from a Star Trek talent.

Warner Bros. took to social media last week with a teaser announcing that Practical Magic 2, featuring returning stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, will open in theaters on September 18, 2026. The Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier, who directed Bullock in Bird Box and Kidman in both The Undoing and The Perfect Couple, will direct the sequel.

The Star Trek factor -- so far -- includes Akiva Goldsman. The Oscar-winning Goldsman co-wrote the original Practical Magic film and, according to the Hollywood trade paper Variety, has penned the upcoming sequel.

Netflix’s Critically Panned Indian ‘Bridgerton’ Dupe Dethrones ‘The Four Seasons’ Despite 33% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
It's no secret that Netflix decides its content strategy based on data. The success of certain kinds of shows and films inspires the streamer to produce more of the same, but with a twist. The Royals, a new eight-episode romantic comedy series, takes the Bridgerton model and applies it to a modern-day Indian setting. The show features a royal family staring bankruptcy and obsolescence in the face, forced to join hands with a brash young CEO of a hospitality company. The family rents out their palace for "commoners" to live in, and love blossoms between the CEO and a young prince. The Royalsopened to terrible reviews last week, but has been making a splash on the streaming charts.

According to FlixPatrol, The Royals has been topping Netflix's rankings for the last two days, having dethroned the star-studded comedy series The Four Seasons. Co-created by and starring Tina Fey, The Four Seasons also features Will Forte,...

Madonna Biopic Series With Shawn Levy in the Works at Netflix: Report
Image
The Queen of Pop might be getting her own TV series. Music icon Madonna is working with Shawn Levy to develop a limited series at Netflix, according to a new report by Deadline.

Levy and Madonna have been talking about working together for some time, according to the report, and the series is unrelated to a paused film biopic that was being developed at Universal with Julia Garner in the lead role. (That film was put on an indefinite hold ahead of her massive Celebration tour.)

Shawn Levy is the...

Inside the bold new project from Madonna and a Stranger Things visionary
Image
Madonna has been a music icon for 40 years. She might not have produced the vast number of hits she did in the 1980s, but she knows how to pull in her crowd. Any gigs she does are sure to be noteworthy. But a biopic of her? That appears to be difficult to make.

A feature film reportedly starring Jennifer Garner has been in the works for some time. The problem is that Garner will eventually have to look elsewhere for work, and her commitment to the project might, in essence, time out. She would seemingly make a great Madonna, but someone else might have to fill that role.

Or will they? What could occur is that Garner transitions from a feature film about Madonna to a limited series about the brilliant musical artist and trendsetter. That is because Deadline reports that the Queen of Pop will work with Stranger Things...

Madonna Limited Series in the Works at Netflix from Shawn Levy
Image
Shawn Levy is reportedly gearing up to helm a limited series about the life and career of Madonna for Netflix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy’s production company 21 Laps has begun work developing the project as part of their overall deal with the streamer. Netflix, Levy, and Madonna have all yet to comment on the direction of the series or when it might be released.

There have been several previous efforts to adapt Madonna’s story for the screen. Recently, Universal Pictures was in the early stages of producing a film version with Julia Garner reportedly being considered as the frontrunner for the starring role, though the movie was ultimately scrapped in early 2023. Last year, Madonna made a post on Instagram hinting that a new cinematic or television project may be in the works.

Levy’s filmography includes titles like Stranger Things, The Perfect Couple, All the Light We Cannot See,...

Madonna Biopic Limited TV Series in the Works at Netflix, Shawn Levy to Co-Produce
Image
Madonna is teaming up with Netflix!

A limited series about her life and music is in early development at the streamer, with Madonna and Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy attached as executive producers, via Deadline.

This is not related to the biopic that Madonna has been working on for years, according to the report.

Keep reading to find out more…

“The duo, who had been discussing the project for awhile, are starting from scratch: the biographical limited series is not related to the Madonna feature biopic which was previously in development at Universal with three-time Emmy winner Julia Garner as the choice to play the Queen of Pop,” the outlet notes.

It’s also not yet clear which period of Madonna’s life that the Netflix series would be centered around.

Julia has remained in Madonna‘s orbit, appearing on her Celebration Tour and partying with her at Madonna‘s 2025 Oscars party.

Madonna Limited Series From Shawn Levy in the Works at Netflix
Image
After stops and starts on a biopic about her life and career, Madonna is turning to the limited series format to tell her story.

The music icon is teaming with producer and director Shawn Levy on a series project at Netflix. The limited series in the early stages of development at the streamer, where Levy’s 21 Laps company has an overall deal.

Netflix declined comment.

The Netflix project is not related to previous efforts to mount a feature film about Madonna. Julia Garner was considered the frontrunner to play Madonna in the film, which was set up at Universal Pictures but was scuttled in early 2023. Madonna hinted last year, via a social media post, that she was again at work on the film.

Since the development process is in its early days, it’s not clear whether the potential Netflix series would span Madonna’s entire life and career or a specific period within it.

Madonna Teams With Shawn Levy For Limited Series About Her Life In Works At Netflix

Exclusive: Global music superstar Madonna has partnered with global streamer Netflix to tell her story. A limited series about her life and music is in early development at Netflix, with Madonna and Shawn Levy, whose 21 Laps has an exclusive TV overall deal at the platform, executive producing, Deadline has learned. A rep for Netflix declined comment.

The duo, who had been discussing the project for awhile, are starting from scratch: the biographical limited series is not related to the Madonna feature biopic which was previously in development at Universal with three-time Emmy winner Julia Garner as the choice to play the Queen of Pop.

It is early days of development on the TV series, so it is unclear yet which period in Madonna’s decades-spanning career it will focus on. Still, Garner has remained engaged — she famously appeared alongside Madonna on stage at the singer’s Celebration Tour in December...

Ishaan Khatter Booked Netflix’s ‘The Perfect Couple’ Role With a Cameo in Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio Movie
Image
Bollywood heartthrob Ishaan Khatter is having a dream run with his back-to-back western projects, including A Suitable Boy, and more recently in 2024’s Netflix miniseries The Perfect Couple.

While the 29-year-old made his theatrical debut with the critically acclaimed film Beyond the Clouds in 2017, it didn’t take him much time to expand his wings on a broader horizon. Soon, in 2020, he starred in the British television drama miniseries, A Suitable Boy, based on Vikram Seth’s 1993 novel of the same name. Ace director Mira Nair directed the BBC One project after Andrew Davies adapted it into a screenplay.

However, it was not the end of the occidental projects for the young actor, who soon found a role – albeit a cameo – in the Meryl Streep and Leonardo DiCaprio starrer Don’t Look Up (2021). However, Khatter said, the role, as impromptu as it looked, was just his audition tape. Moreover, his love...

Netflix’s ‘The Royals’: Rangita Pritish Nandy on Bringing Indian Regals to the Global Stage and Ishaan Khatter’s Shirtless Scenes – ‘It’s a Lot of Times, and Nobody’s Going to be Complaining’
Image
Palaces, power struggles, and a prince who can’t keep his shirt on — Netflix’s “The Royals” is bringing fictional Indian aristocracy to global screens.

Netflix’s latest Indian series offers viewers a contemporary twist on the romantic comedy genre through the lens of a fictitious Indian royal family in the crumbling kingdom of Morpur.

Created by Rangita Pritish Nandy and Ishita Pritish Nandy under their Pritish Nandy Communications (Pnc) banner, the series stars Ishaan Khatter as Aviraaj Singh, a reluctant, polo-playing new-age prince, alongside Bhumi Pednekar as Sophia Kanmani Shekhar, a fiercely driven CEO with corporate ambitions.

The concept began with what Rangita Pritish Nandy describes as a “dichotomy,” exploring the tension between traditional royalty and modern entrepreneurship. “Technically, Indian royalty doesn’t exist. It hasn’t existed since 1950 when it was abolished,” she explains. “So you have the palaces, and you have the apparent wealth and the show of luxury…...

A new month and a new Emmy contender? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Tina Fey's new series The Four Seasons, category changes, and more.

Adapted from the 1981 Alan Alda film of the same name, The Four Seasons, all eight episodes of which hit Netflix on Thursday, follows three couples as they vacation together throughout the four seasons of the year. It's currently in ninth place in Gold Derby's Best Comedy Series odds, no doubt buoyed by the names attached. Fey, who co-created the show with Tracey Wigfield and Lang Fisher, stars alongside Steve Carell, Will Forte, and Colman Domingo. Kerri Kenney-Silver, Marco Calvani, and Erika Henningsen round out the cast. But will its late release and solid but not spectacular reviews hinder its chances?

‘The Last of Us’ stars Pedro Pascal, Isabela Merced are rising in the latest Emmy odds

Two of the stars of The Last of Us are on the rise this week in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions.

Pedro Pascal, whose beloved character Joel had a brutal run-in with a golf club in the second episode of Season 2, has jumped from fourth place to third place in Best Drama Actor. Meanwhile, series newcomer Isabela Merced, who plays the free-spirited zombie apocalypse survivor Dina, has ascended from ninth place to eighth place in Best Drama Supporting Actress. The Perfect Couple season 2 scores sneaky good update
Image
Things are starting to look good for The Perfect Couple season 2 on Netflix!

It's been a while since we've heard much about a potential second season of the Netflix original series, but in the last two months, we've had two updates pointing to a season 2 renewal for The Perfect Couple.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix submitted The Perfect Couple in the drama series categories, rather than the limited series categories. Normally, limited series get nominated in -- you guessed it! -- limited series categories. There are only a few exceptions, but usually, it means that there's going to be another season of the series. It doesn't always work out that way, but often, it does.

That report follows the Variety report from March that suggested The Perfect Couple season 2 was in the works. The first season was based on Elin Hilderbrand's novel of the same name.

The first two episodes will launch together, followed by weekly releases through July 3.

Originally debuting in 2021 and based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, the series centers on nine people attending a week-long wellness retreat led by Masha, an enigmatic figure whose methods often blur ethical lines. This season brings together Christine Baranski, Murray Bartlett, Mark Strong, Annie Murphy, Henry Golding, Lena Olin, Lucas Englander, King Princess, Dolly de Leon, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Aras Aydin.

The new retreat, called Zauberwald, isolates the participants in a mountainous landscape far from familiar surroundings. As they undergo intense therapy sessions, including the use of psychedelics, tensions mount between personal revelation and the strain of the environment.

‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Season 2 Trailer: Nicole Kidman Is Hiding Another Secret Under Her Wig as Icy Guru Masha

Does Nicole Kidman do too much TV? Is there even a thing as too much Nicole Kidman? No, there really is not.

The “Lioness,” “The Perfect Couple,” “Expats,” and “Scarpetta” star (we can keep going too…) returns as ill-intentioned guru Masha for “Nine Perfect Strangers” Season 2. Emmys: Netflix’s ‘The Perfect Couple’ Will Compete in Drama Categories, Not Limited/Anthology (Exclusive)
Image
Here’s an Emmys surprise for you.

The Perfect Couple, the six-episode Netflix murder-mystery starring Nicole Kidman that was a huge hit for the streamer upon its release on Sept. 5, 2024, is being submitted for Emmys consideration not in the limited/anthology series categories, where most pundits assumed it would compete, but rather in the drama series categories, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

That’s because “Queen of the Beach Read” Elin Hilberbrand, from whose 2018 bestselling novel Jenna Lamia created and Susanne Bier directed the show, has written additional books that could also be adapted into an additional season or seasons. Netflix declined to comment on that possibility but confirmed the aforementioned submission decision.

It all makes sense, given just how popular The Perfect Couple was. Indeed, the show spent six weeks in the service’s global top 10 of English-language TV shows; broke into the top 10 TV shows in 92 countries; and...

While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop moved forward first, reaching theatres on April 11th. Just over two weeks later, the movie is set to receive a digital release tomorrow, April 29th, and will be available on Prime Video at This Link.

Written by Jillian Jacobs and Chris Roach, a writing duo that has previously worked with Blumhouse on the horror projects Truth or Dare and Fantasy Island,...

Much of the Emmy conversation around Adolescence's acting chances has centered around Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, as they play the two key characters in the harrowing project. However, Gold Derby is now predicting that five total performers will receive nominations this year.

The four-episode crime drama is created and written by Graham and Jack Thorne, and stars Graham as Eddie Miller, the father of Cooper's 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for allegedly stabbing a classmate to death. Each episode is directed by Philip Barantini and filmed in a single take as viewers learn more about Jamie's crime from the viewpoints of the police, his psychiatrist, and his family.

Also expected to nab Emmy nominations for the cast are Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe, Erin Doherty as child psychologist Briony Ariston, and Christine Tremarco as Jamie's mother and Eddie's wife, Manda Miller. Cooper and Doherty are...

Netflix’s New Romantic ‘Yellowstone’ Dupe Debuts Among Most-Watched Shows on the Platform
Image
The success of Yellowstone is undeniable — the Paramount+ series repeatedly brings in big viewing numbers, and it's no wonder that other platforms are trying to replicate the format. Netflix's latest attempt at the neo-western genre is Ransom Canyon. For a new and unknown series, the title resonated pretty well with Netflix subscribers, and with just one week it shot up all the way to #2 among the most-watched shows on the platform — it only failed to outperform the new season of Black Mirror.

Ransom Canyon is set in Texas and chronicles the feud between three families that own ranches and are fighting to control the land. Yes, it's a pretty similar situation to what the Duttons deal with in Yellowstone, but the story managed to rope viewers in: the series accumulated 7.2 million views in less than seven days, which is more than Adolescence did this week (6M) and more than...

Christopher Landon explains why he stepped away from Scream 7 and the Arachnophobia reboot
Image
On June 11, 2018, it was announced that genre regular James Wan’s company Atomic Monster was teaming up with Amblin to produce a remake of the 1990 “nature run amok” horror film Arachnophobia – and almost exactly four years later, we heard that that Christopher Landon, director of Happy Death Day and Freaky, would be writing and directing the new take on Arachnophobia. Fourteen months after that, it was announced that Landon was set to direct Scream 7. But, as it turns out, Landon won’t be making either of those movies – and in a new interview with Vanity Fair, he revealed exactly why he stepped away from both projects.

As we all know, Scream 7 completely fell apart around Landon. At one time, it was expected that Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega would be the leads in this sequel as well. But then Barrera was fired from...

How Some “Very Creepy Shrek Memes” AirDropped to Producers Led to Thriller ‘Drop’
Image
The origin story of Drop — the new Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes thriller that sees a widowed mother’s first date upended when she starts receiving anonymous, threatening messages to her phone — began three years ago when its producers were vacationing in Italy.

Cameron Fuller and Sam Lerner were mid-dinner “in a packed restaurant and someone started AirDropping very creepy Shrek memes” to Lerner’s girlfriend Olivia Sui.

“We tried to figure out who it was the entire night, and they kept coming and we couldn’t figure it out,” Fuller, who produced the film with Michael Bay and his father Brad Fuller, told The Hollywood Reporter at the Los Angeles premiere on Tuesday. “The whole meal was about targeting the one person who was doing this. We followed the one person we were 100 percent sure it was to the pool where we could isolate their AirDrop with ours and we’d know it was him,...

Netflix's most popular limited series of the year could be coming back for season 2
Image
It's a great time to be a fan of the most-watched Netflix limited series of the year... so far, but it's unimaginable that any show coming this year will snatch the title from Adolescence. The one-take UK thriller series premiered with a bang on March 13, becoming an overnight success that has only continued to grow week after week thanks to positive word of mouth. Now, it's an all-timer.

After less the one month on Netflix, Adolescence has risen through the top 10 most popular English-language Netflix shows of all time ranking. In four weeks, the show has managed to surpass two seasons of Bridgerton to rank in the top 5 at No. 4. Adolescence has currently grabbed over 114 million views and growing. There's still a chance the series could best Stranger Things season 4 and Dahmer: Monster.

Even though when the series first premiered in March a second season seemed unlikely given the story's limited nature,...

Sam Nivola on ‘The White Lotus’ Finale, That Blender Scene and Lochlan’s Shattered Relationship With Saxon
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Season 3 finale of “The White Lotus,” now streaming on Max.

Who knew Chekhov’s gun would be a protein shake?

In the Season 3 finale of “The White Lotus” dear, sweet, people-pleasing Lochlan Ratliff (Sam Nivola) nearly ended his vacation a day early after he downed a smoothie filled with fruit from the “suicide tree” outside his family’s palatial villa. Mike White, the show’s creator, has planted the seeds for Lochlan’s ill-fated attempts to pack on some muscle from the very first episode, when hotel worker Pam (Morgana O’Reilly) warned the family to avoid the poisonous fruit that was growing just outside their front door. Throw in some ominous shots of a blender and endless chatter about protein shakes courtesy of Lochlan’s older brother and idol, Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger), and it was pretty clear that these powdered drinks would be a major plot point.
