Nicole Kidman has touched down at the Cannes Film Festival, where she is set to receive the Woman in Motion Award from Kering chairman and CEO François-Henri Pinault, Cannes president Iris Knobloch and festival director Thierry Fremaux. Ahead of the awards dinner, Kidman joined Variety’s Angelique Jackson for a Kering Woman in Motion talk in which the Oscar winner spoke passionately about her commitment to uplifting female directors.

It was in 2017 when Kidman made a public vow to work with a woman director every 18 months. She had no idea if that would even be possible, but she was determined to see it through. And see it through she has. In the last eight years, plus factoring in her current projects in development, Kidman has teamed up with 27 female directors across her her various film and television projects.

“I was going to make it possible,” Kidman said during the Kering talk about her vow.

The fantasy-romance film Practical Magic opened more than 25 years ago, in 1998, to be precise. Despite the fact that it bombed at the box office, its fans transformed the movie into a cult classic and continually nudged Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel. Well, it’s officially happening. A sequel is in the works, with some major involvement from a Star Trek talent.

Warner Bros. took to social media last week with a teaser announcing that Practical Magic 2, featuring returning stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, will open in theaters on September 18, 2026. The Danish filmmaker Susanne Bier, who directed Bullock in Bird Box and Kidman in both The Undoing and The Perfect Couple, will direct the sequel.

The Star Trek factor -- so far -- includes Akiva Goldsman. The Oscar-winning Goldsman co-wrote the original Practical Magic film and, according to the Hollywood trade paper Variety, has penned the upcoming sequel.

It's no secret that Netflix decides its content strategy based on data. The success of certain kinds of shows and films inspires the streamer to produce more of the same, but with a twist. The Royals, a new eight-episode romantic comedy series, takes the Bridgerton model and applies it to a modern-day Indian setting. The show features a royal family staring bankruptcy and obsolescence in the face, forced to join hands with a brash young CEO of a hospitality company. The family rents out their palace for "commoners" to live in, and love blossoms between the CEO and a young prince. The Royalsopened to terrible reviews last week, but has been making a splash on the streaming charts.

The Queen of Pop might be getting her own TV series. Music icon Madonna is working with Shawn Levy to develop a limited series at Netflix, according to a new report by Deadline.

Levy and Madonna have been talking about working together for some time, according to the report, and the series is unrelated to a paused film biopic that was being developed at Universal with Julia Garner in the lead role. (That film was put on an indefinite hold ahead of her massive Celebration tour.)

Madonna has been a music icon for 40 years. She might not have produced the vast number of hits she did in the 1980s, but she knows how to pull in her crowd. Any gigs she does are sure to be noteworthy. But a biopic of her? That appears to be difficult to make.

A feature film reportedly starring Jennifer Garner has been in the works for some time. The problem is that Garner will eventually have to look elsewhere for work, and her commitment to the project might, in essence, time out. She would seemingly make a great Madonna, but someone else might have to fill that role.

Or will they? What could occur is that Garner transitions from a feature film about Madonna to a limited series about the brilliant musical artist and trendsetter. That is because Deadline reports that the Queen of Pop will work with Stranger Things...

Shawn Levy is reportedly gearing up to helm a limited series about the life and career of Madonna for Netflix.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Levy’s production company 21 Laps has begun work developing the project as part of their overall deal with the streamer. Netflix, Levy, and Madonna have all yet to comment on the direction of the series or when it might be released.

There have been several previous efforts to adapt Madonna’s story for the screen. Recently, Universal Pictures was in the early stages of producing a film version with Julia Garner reportedly being considered as the frontrunner for the starring role, though the movie was ultimately scrapped in early 2023. Last year, Madonna made a post on Instagram hinting that a new cinematic or television project may be in the works.

A little over a year ago, it was reported that Noah Baumbach has been tapped to helm his fourth project with Netflix after Marriage Story, White Noise and The Meyerowitz Stories. Plot details are still kept under wraps and it was only this past January that Netflix revealed the title of the film will be Jay Kelly. Baumbach directs the film from a screenplay written by him and the movie’s co-star, Emily Mortimer. Baumbach reunites with his Meyerowitz Stories star Adam Sandler and pairs him up with George Clooney. Gold Derby has learned Netflix will submit Emmy winner Julianne Moore in the Best Limited Series/Movie Supporting Actress field alongside costar Milly Alcock. The four were the Composer’s Choice Award recipients at the performance rights organization’s annual Screen Music awards, with Reznor taking home the Composers’ Choice award for film score of the year for his work on Challengers. Two of the stars of The Last of Us are on the rise this week in Gold Derby's Emmy predictions.

Pedro Pascal, whose beloved character Joel had a brutal run-in with a golf club in the second episode of Season 2, has jumped from fourth place to third place in Best Drama Actor. Meanwhile, series newcomer Isabela Merced, who plays the free-spirited zombie apocalypse survivor Dina, has ascended from ninth place to eighth place in Best Drama Supporting Actress. This would be Pascal's fourth career Emmy bid after receiving three in 2023 for The Last of Us, Saturday Night Live, and Patagonia; Merced is seeking her first nomination.

Things are starting to look good for The Perfect Couple season 2 on Netflix!

It's been a while since we've heard much about a potential second season of the Netflix original series, but in the last two months, we've had two updates pointing to a season 2 renewal for The Perfect Couple.

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix submitted The Perfect Couple in the drama series categories, rather than the limited series categories. Normally, limited series get nominated in -- you guessed it! -- limited series categories. There are only a few exceptions, but usually, it means that there's going to be another season of the series. It doesn't always work out that way, but often, it does.

That report follows the Variety report from March that suggested The Perfect Couple season 2 was in the works. The first season was based on Elin Hilderbrand's novel of the same name.

Nicole Kidman reprises her role as Masha Dmitrichenko in the second season of Nine Perfect Strangers, premiering May 22, 2025, on Prime Video. The series introduces a new cast and a dramatic change of setting, with the retreat now located in the Austrian Alps. The first two episodes will launch together, followed by weekly releases through July 3.

Originally debuting in 2021 and based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, the series centers on nine people attending a week-long wellness retreat led by Masha, an enigmatic figure whose methods often blur ethical lines. This season brings together Christine Baranski, Murray Bartlett, Mark Strong, Annie Murphy, Henry Golding, Lena Olin, Lucas Englander, King Princess, Dolly de Leon, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, and Aras Aydin.

The new retreat, called Zauberwald, isolates the participants in a mountainous landscape far from familiar surroundings. As they undergo intense therapy sessions, including the use of psychedelics, tensions mount between personal revelation and the strain of the environment.

Hulu has just released the trailer for season 2 of Nine Perfect Strangers. The honor, presented during the Cannes Film Festival from the fest itself and longtime partner Kering, will be doled out May 18 during a glamorous gala, which is typically attended by the Cannes jury, A-list stars, auteurs and industry insiders.

Kidman will be the milestone 10th Women in Motion recipient, joining a roster of honorees that includes NBCUniversal chief Donna Langley, Jane Fonda, Isabelle Huppert, Patty Jenkins, Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon, Viola Davis, Michelle Yeoh, Gong Li and Salma Hayek Pinault. Here’s an Emmys surprise for you.

The Perfect Couple, the six-episode Netflix murder-mystery starring Nicole Kidman that was a huge hit for the streamer upon its release on Sept. 5, 2024, is being submitted for Emmys consideration not in the limited/anthology series categories, where most pundits assumed it would compete, but rather in the drama series categories, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

That’s because “Queen of the Beach Read” Elin Hilberbrand, from whose 2018 bestselling novel Jenna Lamia created and Susanne Bier directed the show, has written additional books that could also be adapted into an additional season or seasons. Netflix declined to comment on that possibility but confirmed the aforementioned submission decision.

Martin Scorsese has boarded Indian filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan’s Cannes Un Certain Regard selection title “Homebound” as an executive producer, Variety has confirmed.

The film is produced by multihyphenate Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, with Somen Mishra, Apoorva Mehta and Johar producing. It stars Ishaan Khatter (“The Perfect Couple”), Janhvi Kapoor (“Devara Part 1”) and Vishal Jethwa (“Tiger 3”).

In the film, two childhood friends from a small North Indian village chase a police job that promises them the dignity they’ve long been denied. But as they inch closer to their dream, mounting desperation threatens the bond that holds them together.

Much of the Emmy conversation around Adolescence's acting chances has centered around Stephen Graham and Owen Cooper, as they play the two key characters in the harrowing project. However, Gold Derby is now predicting that five total performers will receive nominations this year.

The four-episode crime drama is created and written by Graham and Jack Thorne, and stars Graham as Eddie Miller, the father of Cooper's 13-year-old Jamie Miller, who is arrested for allegedly stabbing a classmate to death. Each episode is directed by Philip Barantini and filmed in a single take as viewers learn more about Jamie's crime from the viewpoints of the police, his psychiatrist, and his family.

“Sweet Magnolias” will be returning for a fifth season, Netflix announced Wednesday. News of the pickup was tied to “World Book Day,” and came as part of a series of announcements that also included the greenlight for two new shows, “The Age of Innocence” and “Unaccustomed Earth,” in addition to the “Sweet Magnolias” renewal.

“Sweet Magnolias” is based on the book series by New York Times best-selling author Sherryl Woods. According to Netflix, which described the series as a “comfort drama,” the show “continuously ranks among Netflix’s Global Top 10 list in over 60 countries.”

“Sweet Magnolias” centers on the lifelong friendship between Maddie (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue (Brooke Elliott), and Helen (Heather Headley) “as they juggle relationships, family, and careers in the charming small town of Serenity, S.C.”

Exclusive: Legendary Television’s Robert Atwood has joined Shawn Levy’s 21 Laps Entertainment as Head of Television. Filling a role that has been vacant for about two years, he will help shepherd 21 Laps’ TV slate under the overall deal at Netflix where the company has been based for nearly a decade.

Atwood comes to 21 Laps from Legendary Television, where he spent six years, most recently as EVP Scripted Series, developing new projects and overseeing the indie studio’s current series and animation slate.

During his tenure, he spearheaded Legendary’s Monarch, which launched as AppleTV+’s highest-rated first season of an ongoing series at the time, with multiple spinoffs in the Godzilla/Kong Monsterverse currently in development. In the Season 3 finale of “The White Lotus” dear, sweet, people-pleasing Lochlan Ratliff (Sam Nivola) nearly ended his vacation a day early after he downed a smoothie filled with fruit from the “suicide tree” outside his family’s palatial villa. Mike White, the show’s creator, has planted the seeds for Lochlan’s ill-fated attempts to pack on some muscle from the very first episode, when hotel worker Pam (Morgana O’Reilly) warned the family to avoid the poisonous fruit that was growing just outside their front door. Tommy Flanagan has joined the cast of HBO’s fantasy drama series House of the Dragon for Season 3 in a key role.

Based on Martin’s Fire & Blood and set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon tells the story of House Targaryen.
