“You just couldn’t die, could you?”
There are certain anime evergreen customs that are omnipresent in the medium, with ninja and samurai right at the top of the list. Audiences have their share of options when it comes to such content, whether it’s established classics like Rurouni Kenshin, Jubei-chan: The Ninja Girl, and Ninja Scroll, or newer modern hits like Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku, Yasuke, and Blue Eye Samurai. It’s harder to stand out in a genre that’s done it all before, but this only makes Ninja Kamui’s success even more significant. Adult Swim is not one to chase trends, but they’ve tapped into an electric energy here and produced a powerful series that confidently slices its way through the competition.

Got a few decent DVD and Blu-ray releases out this week, so let's get to it. First up is the fourth installment in the uneven (yet very popular) Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil: Afterlife. This release comes at is in a variety of ways. On DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D which only works on 3D televisions so buyer beware.
Also out this week is FX network's hilarious, irreverant and just plain vulgar Archer: Season 1. Looks like it's only out on DVD, but if you haven't seen Adam Reed, Matt Thompson's show yet I highly recommend forgoing the HD for the laughs.
Form What I'm hearing, The American is not the Bourne George Clooney. In fact, word from friends who've seen the flick is that it's acutally a very slow and deliberate film worth checking out. So I will be.

Deadly Ninja, fierce warrior clans, treacherous pirates and fearless shark hunters? Yoichi Sai’s Kamui: The Lone Ninja (aka Kamui gaiden) is heading for release on UK DVD and Blu-ray. Based on the multi-volume Manga series created by artist Sanpei Shirato in 1964, Lone Ninja comes to the screen as a live-action, effects-laden extravaganza, but don’t go into this expecting guys in pitch black shōzoku, flitting over rooftops. Kamui takes a far grittier look, at the life of a Ninja on the run and arrives on shelf via Manga Entertainment, on 9th August 9th. Synopsis: 17th century Japan and from a young age Kamui has been considered something of an outcast, even within his own ninja clan. Disillusioned with the laws and principles, which dictate that he must use his skills to kill others, Kamui chooses to leave his past behind him and go in search of true freedom. But...

Manga Entertainment UK has made some very interesting announcement via the label’s official Twitter account. In the first place, Yoichi Sai’s Kamui Gaiden is supposed to be released on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in the UK this Summer. The live-action adaptation of the anime classic Ninpu Kamui Gaiden opened in Japan in September 2009 and will be released there on DVD and Blu-ray Disc (without English subtitles of course) in February.
And just a few hours ago, it was also announced that Mamoru Hosoda and Satoko Okudera’s hit anime Summer Wars will be released in September in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray Disc, just six month after the subtitle-less Japanese DVD and Blu-ray Disc release from Vap.
Talking about Mamoru Hosoda and Satoko Okudera, I also asked @MangaUK about the often announced and delayed Blu-ray Disc of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time but I didn’t receive an answer yet…...

The Japanese Website for Yoichi Sai’s Kamui Gaiden has been updated today and is now showing the second trailer for the live-action adaptation of the ninja manga.
[See post to watch Flash video] Kamui Gaiden will open on September 19th across Japan.
Kamui is a Ninja on the run from the world of Ninja bound by rules in search of true freedom. However, he is burdened with the fate, where it is not allowed to take the secret of their powers outside of the tribe — if you are born as Ninja, you must die as Ninja. This brings him to constantly fight for his life against other Ninjas who trie to kill him and hide the secrets within. He does not trust, and he does not love. Showing weakness leads to immediate death. An incident brings him to an old fisherman’s village, where he finally starts to feel trust and affection towards other people.

It’s been a long and apparently troubled road for Yoichi Sai to bring his ninja epic to the big screen. After the very difficult production of Korean action-melodrama Soo, Sai - an ethnically Korean Japanese - returned back home to Japan to tackle an adaptation of Shirato Sanpei’s manga The Legend of Kamui Ninja. The film was announced ages ago but there’s been nothing from it since, other than the occassional rumor of some trouble or other on the set. But, finally - and I say finally because the world really doesn’t have enough ninja films and Sai’s got the chops to make a damn good one - we get at least a tease, in the form of a revamped website and big ol’ photo of Kenichi Matsuyama in the lead role. It aint much, but it’s something ...
