Crypt's Enormous
Crypt Killer is another lightgun arcade game from Konami. They've done loads. Their best known is probably Lethal Enforcers. Crypt Killer I think is intended as a sequel of sorts to 1994's Corpse Killer, which was ported to the 32X.
Like Corpse Killer, Crypt Killer got review scores which were average or below average by most of the gaming media at the time. To be honest, it's not as bad as is made out. I remember the PS1 and Saturn's version being panned due to bad graphics. To be honest I think it was bad timing more than anything. The game came out the same year Time Crisis and Point Blank were ported to console. Admittedly both Time Crisis and Point Blank are better games and do look better, but it's a slightly unfair comparison. Point Blank is basically a party game, the Mario Party of lightgun games if you like and very cartoony in its style. Time Crisis is more serious in tone and is straight out a Hollywood action movie in terms of plot. Crypt Killer is a bit pixely and the 3D models look a bit rough these days; trust me, they were impressive at the time. The game plays smooth and quick and had very few frame drops even with a large number of characters on screen at the same time.
The game has familiar locations from horror film: the mummy's tomb, spooky caves filled with bats and haunted castles. The bosses are imaginative and distinctive, especially for the time when many lightgun games were going for a more realistic style (Virtua Cop, Time Crisis). The game has multiple routes which allows for some replay value. The game is also massive for a lightgun game and will easily take over an hour to complete, which doesn't sound that big, but Virtua Cop and House of the Dead can be completed in about half the time. The game does repeat itself a bit too much and it could have been cut down. An unlockable boss rush mode would have been nice, but it was a rare feature at the time.
Overall: I think this game was unfairly treated at the time. We could see this quite a bit in the gaming press with sprite games often getting bad reviews. The game is fun, but very tough and a total coin guzzler. The difficulty really could be made fairer and it would vastly improve it. The graphics I find OK, sure they are pixellated due to using sprites, but there's a lot of imagination gone into the character design. It's a long, tough, game, but one worth exploring for lightgun fans.
