Harvard professor symbolism Robert Langdon rushes to Washington D.C. when told his weird mentor Peter Solomon needs him to take over as keynote speaker, only to find the mas was kidnapped and his hand severed, left as a clue in a dome in the Capitol, which is closed and cleared. He's allowed to stay as adviser by CIA agent Inoue Sato, who doesn't explain why she's there and takes the case rather then the FBI. He got cryptic instructions from one ruthless Mal'akh, whose part bloodily eliminates anyone in their way. Capitol police agent Nunez proves most helpful as they penetrate the Capitol from clue to clue, and escape crushing by a moving wall last minute with a masonic-inscribed pyramid. Meanwhile Langdon's friend, Peter's daughter Katherine Solomon, is guarded by agents, which still proves unsafe, and wants to join the search.
