Derek Cianfrance and Ryan Gosling followed up their 2010 film Blue Valentine by shooting The Place Beyond the Pines, a film in which Gosling plays a motorcycle stunt rider and criminal (a familiar role for him) who tangles with a cop (Bradley Cooper) in the beginning of a conflict that involves their sons, as well. The movie also features Eva Mendes, Rose Byrne, Ben Mendelsohn, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali, and Ray Liotta, and is said to be inspired by Jack London. But the sonic palette of the film might be slightly more modern, as the score is being written by Mike Patton, best known for his work with Faith No More, Mr. Bungle and Fantomas. That's not a choice I ever would have expected, but it might be pretty awesome. The news comes via a press release from Patton's publicist; there is no info other than that Cianfrance chose Patton for the gig.

Since Fantomas’ 2001 album The Director’s Cut, which consisted entirely of soundtrack covers, Mike Patton has shown an increasing affection for movie music. In 2008 and ’09, he scored A Perfect Place and Crank: High Voltage, and on last year’s Mondo Cane, he reworked the theme from Mario Bava’s 1968 film Danger Diabolik. Now he’s released The Solitude Of Prime Numbers, an album “inspired” by Paolo Giordano’s eccentric novel and the 2010 film, which Patton also scored. Giordano’s story follows the parallel lives of two loners trapped in social isolation, deftly captured by Patton ...

Horror fans know the vastly talented Mike Patton as much more than the vocalist for the popular (and recently reunited) band Faith No More... we know because Mike's also one of us: among his countless experimental side-projects, the influence of classic horror – and the music of cinema in general – is often at the center of his creative output. The proof is definitely out there: his eccentric and brilliant outfit Fantomas has put out amazing metal covers of themes from The Omen, Spider Baby, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and Rosemary's Baby; his alt-pop project Peeping Tom featured soundtrack loops from The Shining; he scored the black comedy short A Perfect Place (featuring FEARnet fave Bill Moseley and fellow...

After supplying the score to moody, blackly-comic short film A Perfect Place (featuring the awesome Bill Moseley), I knew that Mike Patton – former Faith No More frontman and founder of countless cool and experimental bands like Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Lovage and Peeping Tom – had a promising future as a film composer, but I have to admit I was a little bit stunned to discover the multi-talented musician's first full-blown feature film score would be... Crank: High Voltage? I'm not doing a very good job putting that concept together in my head just yet. According to MovieWeb, co-directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor have commissioned Patton to score the sequel to the hyper-spastic Jason Statham thriller....
