The Stay in LA campaign, a call to keep more production in the city, has hit 20,000 signatures with high-profile stars including Andy Garcia and Marisa Tomei joining the call alongside filmmakers including Jonathan Nolan and Paul Feig.
This comes after a week of awards season events where the likes of Hacks co-creator Paul W. Downs and DGA President Lesli Linka Glatter stumped for the campaign at high-profile shindigs.
As Hacks, which shoots in locations including Altadena, won best comedy series at the Critics Choice Awards, Downs said that “we need to ask to shoot our shows in LA” and the “people in the room have the power to make it happen”, while Linka Glatter, who lost her home in the wildfires, urged directors to “insist that your projects are shot where they are set”.

Emmy Season Isn’t Even in Full Swing, but ‘Hacks’ Has Already Emerged as Top Comedy Awards Contender

What a weekend. Just like “Anora,” which has fully jumped back into the Best Picture race, the television show “Hacks” also had an incredibly auspicious weekend, adding a PGA Award and DGA Award to join its Critics Choice Awards 2025 statue for Best Comedy Series.
Though other current reigning Emmy winners like “Shōgun,” “Baby Reindeer,” and “Ripley” were big winners as well, those shows have either ended or are far off from a new season, so their PGA and/or DGA Award wins have little effect on the upcoming Emmys race. But “Hacks” is expected to premiere its fourth season in the spring, most likely making it eligible for a possible back-to-back Outstanding Comedy Series win.
At the DGA Awards 2025, “Hacks” director and co-showrunner Lucia Aniello got emotional thanking the room full of peers for awarding her work directing the Season 3 finale “Bulletproof.” “I’m very proud to be a member of this union,...

This weekend, the winners of the 77th Annual DGA Awards were announced at a wonderful celebration in Los Angeles. The 2024 awards season starting to wrap up with DGA and PGA winners this weekend, and ending with the Academy Awards airing in early March soon enough. This year it's Anora director Sean Baker conquering the awards season - taking home the top DGA prize for his celebrated film, along with acclaimed Nickel Boys director RaMell Ross winning for Best First Feature. These are two of my favorite films of 2024 - very happy with both winning. In addition, the Ukraine doc film Porcelain War (directed by Slava Leontyev & Brendan Bellomo) won the prize for Best Documentary; Steven Zaillian also won for directing the Netflix series Ripley; and prizes went to Frederick E. O. Toye for an episode of "Shogun", and Lucia Aniello for an episode of "Hacks", in the other Best TV categories.

For a while there the Best Picture race was wide open. But now that both the Directors Guild of America and the Producers Guild of America have agreed on one film, it’s looking like the image is starting to come together for the Academy Awards. And that film is Anora, as director Sean Baker took home the DGA Award for Best Director and the film itself won the top prize from the PGA.
First-time DGA nominee Sean Baker would beat out The Brutalist’s Brady Corbet, A Complete Unknown’s James Mangold, Conclave’s Edward Berger, and Emilia Pérez’s Jacques Audiard. As we’ve found, the Directors Guild of America has an incredible track record of predicting the Best Director Oscar winner, with less than 10 of the DGA winners not taking home the Academy Award. The most recent example was in 2019, with Sam Mendes winning for 1917 but losing...

Independent film “Anora” made Hollywood history on Saturday night by winning both the Producers Guild of America (PGA) and Directors Guild of America (DGA) awards, positioning itself as a strong contender for the upcoming Academy Awards.
Director Sean Baker’s $6 million film took home top honors at two prestigious industry events, signaling a breakthrough for independent cinema. The movie follows the story of a strip club worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, capturing critical attention with its unique narrative.
Baker won the DGA’s Outstanding Directorial Achievement award at the Beverly Hilton, followed by the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer. The back-to-back wins are particularly significant, as historical data shows a strong correlation between guild awards and Oscar victories.
“My imposter syndrome is skyrocketing right now,” Baker said during his DGA acceptance speech. He praised lead actress Mikey Madison, noting that working with...

The Producers Guild of America named Anora the best picture of the year at the 2025 PGA Awards. The surprise win came just an hour after director Sean Baker took home the DGA’s top prize — establishing the Neon film as the official Oscars frontrunner for Best Picture. Anora also won Best Picture at last night’s Critics Choice Awards.
Anora defeated fellow Oscar nominees The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, The Substance, and Wicked — as well as non-Oscar nominees A Real Pain and September 5. The two Oscar nominees that missed out on PGA noms were I’m Still Here and Nickel Boys.
Since 2009, both the PGA and the Academy Awards have selected their Best Picture with ranked-choice voting, aka the preferential ballot. Since the two groups aligned their voting procedure, the PGA has been one of the most reliable Oscar predictors, forecasting 13 of 16 Oscar champs including...

The Producers Guild on Saturday handed out it big feature film prize to Neon’s Anora, giving the indie comedy that won last spring’s Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or a massive boost and its third major award in a little more than 24 hours, after winning Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards on Friday and the DGA Awards only minutes earlier tonight.

In a surprising win that resets the Oscar race, Anora director Sean Baker took home the Feature Film Director prize at Directors Guild of America Awards Saturday, instantly becoming the frontrunner for the Best Director trophy at the Academy Awards.
Baker, a first-time DGA nominee, toppled a strong field that included fellow Oscar nominees Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown), along with Conclave director Edward Berger, who failed to land an Oscar bid. The DGA victory came on the same night Baker’s film — which personally earned him four Academy Award bids — unexpectedly won the top prize at another major precursor, the Producers Guild of America Awards, and one night after the film scored at the Critics Choice Awards.
Corbet had still been considered the prohibitive favorite for both the DGA honor and directing Oscar going into Saturday.

At the top of Saturday night’s PGA Awards, the guild’s co-president Donald De Line made a plea to industry suits in the room to keep production in Los Angeles following the devastating wildfires.
“Now more than ever it’s important that we gather together having just endured the most devastating fires in the history of LA. Sadly many of our members were profoundly affected,” De Line told attendees at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Century City.

Completing one of the most remarkable two-day stretches in awards-season history, “Anora” won the top feature film prize at the Producers Guild Awards on Saturday night. The victory came about an hour after its director, Sean Baker, won at the Directors Guild Awards two blocks away, and a little more than 24 hours after the film scored a surprise win for Best Picture at the Critics Choice Awards.
The Critics Choice/DGA/PGA trifecta took the Palme d’Or-winning tragicomedic indie from a film that didn’t seem to have much Oscar momentum to the closest thing to a frontrunner in this weird, unsettled season.

The Producers Guild of America had to delay the voting process and nominations announcement for its annual award show due to the Los Angeles wildfires, but the PGA Awards proceeded as planned tonight from the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles.

Comedian Chelsea Handler delivered a powerful opening monologue at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, skillfully blending humor with heartfelt recognition of local heroes. The event, held at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, began with a poignant tribute to first responders who battled recent devastating wildfires in Los Angeles.
Handler started by honoring firefighters, Red Cross workers, and Habitat for Humanity volunteers. “What we saw and the scope of loss was impossible to imagine,” she told the audience, leading a standing ovation that highlighted community resilience.
Shifting gears, the comedian showcased her trademark wit by targeting Hollywood personalities. She made light of recent legal issues surrounding actors Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, joking about their film “It Ends With Us” by quipping, “No matter whose side you’re on, we can all agree there’s probably not going to be a sequel.”
Her commentary on women in late-night television drew particular attention.

Most stars struck exactly the right style notes at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards. Playful reigned over too formal or fussy, while men and women alike balanced looks that felt equal parts chic and relaxed. Indeed, as for the guys, there was nary a tie in sight — Nicole Kidman, meanwhile, in a menswear-inspired Saint Laurent look, went for the tie and looked terrific.
This event at Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar was postponed twice due to the wildfires that raged throughout Los Angeles County in January, and several of the night’s looks may have been more recent decisions as part of a desire to not seem too overdressed in light of recent events. Even for the haute-couture or custom pieces that were a bit more over the top in their craft or silhouette, they still exuded a whimsical vibe that prevented them from feeling too stiff or serious — in other words,...

Anora won the top prize of best picture at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, while Emilia Pérez, Wicked and The Substance each captured three trophies.
The Brutalist star Adrien Brody won best actor; Demi Moore won best actress for her work in The Substance; Emilia Pérez actress Zoe Saldaña won best supporting actress and A Real Pain‘s Kieran Culkin, who wasn’t in attendance, won best supporting actor.
Emilia Pérez, currently dealing with the fallout from controversial, recently resurfaced tweets by star and best actress Oscar nominee Karla Sofía Gascón, won two other awards at the ceremony, voting for which closed on Jan. 10, well before Gascón’s past posts emerged. The mood within Santa Monica’s Barker Hangar, where the awards took place, was relatively somber with each win for the Netflix musical. Still, the film took home awards for best foreign language film and best song in addition to Saldaña’s trophy.

The Sean Baker film was blanked by the Critics Choice Awards until the night’s final award, failing to convert bids in Best Original Screenplay (which Baker was favored to win), Best Actress for Mikey Madison, Best Supporting Actor for Yura Borisov, Best Director for Baker, Best Ensemble, and Best Editing (for Baker).
Anora wasn’t the only unexpected winner during the ceremony. Just before the Neon release and six-time Oscar nominee took home Best Picture, Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu won Best Director honors. The victory was a shock. Chu, who was snubbed in the Oscars Best Director category, bested Oscar nominees Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Baker, Brady Corbet (The Brutalist), and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) for the honor. Winning Best Comedy Series at the Critics Choice Awards tonight, Hacks co-creator and star Paul W. Downs told the tent at the Santa Monica Barker Hanger that “we need to ask to shoot our shows in L.A.”.
“The people in the room have the power to make it happen,” he said.
The Max series is shot largely in Los Angeles on the Universal lot. One of Hacks‘ main LA locations, Deborah Vance’s (Jean Smart) “side mansion” in Altadena, which has been featured on the show since Season 2, burned down in the Eaton fire.
Shrinking star and music supervisor Christa Miller also said on social recently that season 3 of the AppleTV+ series will continue production in Pasadena and Altadena, where it has always been shot. For Miller, it was important that the production stay in Altadena which was devastated by the Eaton wildfire.

When Hannah Einbinder and Michael Urie took the stage at the same time to accept the awards for best supporting actress and actor in a comedy series during the 2025 Critics Choice Awards, they capitalized on the humor of the moment, hilariously talking over one another as they delivered their speeches.
However, both entertainers took a serious moment to address issues of personal importance to them, with Shrinking‘s Urie thanking his parents for openly loving and accepting him and his queer sister, whom he pointed out in the audience, and Einbinder sounding the alarm on the nation’s current climate crisis.
“We are on the brink of a really dark era of climate denial and Chevron scientists knew in the ’70s that plastic recycling was not efficient,” said Einbinder as she began her speech. “They knew that only nine percent of plastic is actually recycled, and even from that nine percent,...

Chelsea Handler hosted the Critics Choice Awards and opened the show thanking Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni for a much needed “distraction” from the recent L.A. wildfires.
The comedian briefly acknowledged the wildfires and the tough time the Los Angeles has faced since they broke out in early January. Then she made sure praise was thrown at the feet of the “It Ends With Us” costars for giving everyone something else to focus on.
“I want to acknowledge that we’ve been through a lot lately, not just here in Los Angeles, but our entire country, waking up every day not knowing what news we’re going to hear that will disappoint or horrify us,” she said. “So it is important in times like these to have a distraction, and that’s why I want to personally extend my gratitude to Justin Baldoni and Blake Lively.”

Without saying the actual words “Donald Trump,” Critics Choice Awards host Chelsea Handler, who introduced herself as “your Dei host,” fired up her opening monologue Friday night with jokes where Golden Globe host Nikki Glaser feared to go: Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni.
“Thank you for providing us with distraction,” Handler joked about the legally contentious duo who aren’t here at the ceremony today in Santa Monica. Acknowledging that “we have been through a lot lately, not only here in Los Angeles but our entire country,” a reference to the devastating L.A. wildfires and the erratic early days of the second Trump term, nothing spells relief for Handler like the It Ends With Us duo. “I’m grateful, I think we’re all grateful, and I think we’re good,” she said about them.

“Wicked,” “Emilia Pérez,” and “The Substance” each triumphed with three wins at the 30th annual Critics Choice Awards on Friday night. However, it was “Anora” that claimed the best picture prize at this year’s ceremony.
The Neon release entered the race with seven nominations, including best actress for Mikey Madison and best director and original screenplay for Sean Baker. But ultimately, “Anora” walked away with the coveted best picture award, and nothing more.
Meanwhile, “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu, who wasn’t nominated in the Academy Awards’ best director category, beat out several Oscar nominees to win the best director honor at the Critics Choice Awards. “I’m going to win that Oscar!” Chu said jokingly on stage.
The film-acting categories had less surprises, as the ceremony handed best actress to Demi Moore (“The Substance”), best actor to Adrien Brody (“The Brutalist”), best supporting actress to Zoe Saldaña (“Emilia...

Self-described “Dei host” Chelsea Handler emceed the Critics Choice Awards on Friday for the third year in a row, and while she addressed the devastating wildfires and tackled politics (including a swipe at first lady Melania Trump), Handler shied away from the topic that was on everyone’s mind: Karla Sofía Gascón.
The Best Actress nominee’s offensive social media posts about such topics as Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity at the Oscars were unearthed last week by a journalist, causing the Emilia Pérez awards campaign to be derailed. Gascón previously announced that she wouldn’t attend the Critics Choice ceremony and other awards-related events. She’s also up for an Oscar next month, and made history there as the first openly transgender person ever nominated in Best Actress.

“So unexpected, so unexpected,” said “Anora” director Sean Baker from the stage of the Critics Choice Awards in Santa Monica on Friday night.
Baker wasn’t alone in his surprise. His madcap comedy-drama-adventure took home the evening’s final award for Best Picture – without winning a single award anywhere else during the ceremony, losing in the six other categories in which it was nominated. Last year, “Oppenheimer” won eight total awards as part of its pre-Oscars Critics Choice sweep. In 2023, “Everything Everywhere All at Once” led with five wins.
Though “Anora” snagged the top prize, no film dominated in win totals. The award hauls were split between “Wicked,” “The Substance” and “Emilia Pérez” with three awards each and “Conclave,” “A Real Pain” and “Challengers” with two each.

The AFI Awards have always been the softest place to land during awards season.
A roster of honorees — 10 films and 10 television shows — is announced weeks in advance, so if a contender snags an invite to the Four Seasons ballroom, they’re a winner. American Film Institute CEO Bob Gazzale came quick with the reminder during Thursday’s event.
“I don’t know if anyone’s told you, but you won,” the long-serving and well-respected executive explained to generous laughter from an A-list crowd. “There’s no envelopes, there’s no speeches, there’s no sweat. We simply tell you, ‘you’re great,’ we tell you why and then we run a clip. Then in the dark, you cheer and you applaud and you scream for each other. You appreciate and you love each other. That’s what this room is about, and it’s never been anything different. It’s about community.

Oscar frontrunners “Wicked” (Paul Tazewell), “Nosferatu” (Linda Muir), and “Conclave” (Lisy Christl) were all winners at the 27th Costume Designer Guild Awards (Cdga), held February 6 at The Ebell of Los Angeles. “Nobody Wants This” star Jackie Tohn served as host.
The film winners prevailed in the categories of sci-fi/fantasy, period, and contemporary, respectively. Costume designer Tazewell is currently the favorite to win the Oscar for “Wicked,” Jon M. Dressed to the nines and ready to shine, the 2025 Costume Designers Guild Awards (Cdga) rolled out their vibrant carpet on Thursday in Los Angeles. The ceremony celebrated outstanding achievements in costume design across film, television, short-form, and costume illustration. Among the glittering nominees were four of the five Oscar contenders for Best Costume Design: Conclave, Gladiator II, Nosferatu, and Wicked. Notably absent from the Cdga list was the Academy Award-nominated A Complete Unknown.
The four Oscar nominees were split between three categories, avoiding a direct clash prior to the 2025 Oscars on March 2. Conclave prevailed in Contemporary against co-nominees Challengers, Emilia Pérez, The Fall Guy, and The Substance. In Fantasy, winner Wicked was up against Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Borderlands, Dune: Part Two, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. Ahead of a busy weekend on the awards circuit — the Critics Choice Awards, the PGA Awards, the DGA Awards — a veritable Hollywood who’s-who gathered on Thursday to celebrate the American Film Institute’s 10 finest films and television shows of 2024 in a luncheon event rescheduled from a month due to the devastating series of fires that ravaged the Los Angeles area.
And while there were quiet murmurings here and there about Emilia Pérez and the controversy enveloping its star Karla Sofia Gascón, the film was received with warm applause, if not an overabundance of enthusiasm, when it came time to play a clip. The movie was represented at the lunch by director Jacques Audiard, stars Zoe Saldaña, Edgar Ramirez, and Adriana Paz, and composers/songwriters Clément Ducol and Camille. Gascón, unsurprisingly, was a no-show, reportedly holed up in her native Spain after being sidelined by Netflix.

Are the 2025 Critics Choice Awards about to be a repeat of the recent Emmys and Golden Globes?
Television awards faves Hacks, Shōgun, and Baby Reindeer are expected to dominate Friday’s ceremony, which was delayed twice in the wake of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires.
Season 3 of Max’s laugh riot Hacks is predicted to walk away with four trophies: comedy series, comedy actress (Jean Smart), comedy supporting actress (Hannah Einbinder), and comedy supporting actor (Paul W. Downs). In fact, the only category Hacks is expected to lose is Best Comedy Actor … because it doesn’t compete there. Instead, our odds-makers believe Adam Brody (Nobody Wants This) had better start preparing a speech.
Likewise, Season 1 of FX’s historical epic Shōgun has four races locked up, per our rankings: drama series, drama actress (Anna Sawai), drama actor (Hiroyuki Sanada), and drama supporting actor (Tadanobu Asano). The remaining statuette is Best Drama Supporting Actress,...

For the millions of people who haven’t even heard of the movies nominated for Best Picture this year, there’s still a very good reason to watch the Academy Awards: comedy.
After all, this year’s ceremony will be hosted by none other than Conan O’Brien, who previously hosted the Emmys, the MTV Awards, the NFL Honors, and, of course, the esteemed Audiencey Awards.
We also just learned who will be writing this year’s ceremony. In addition to several names that may or not be pseudonyms for Bruce Vilanch, the team includes comedian Carol Leifer. While she’s written for hit shows like Saturday Night Live, Modern Family, The Larry Sanders Show, and most recently, Hacks, a lot of us first became aware of her because of Seinfeld.
Leifer was Emmy-nominated for her work on Seinfeld, writing six episodes (and working as a story editor on dozens more), including classics like “The Rye.

One of the first things that fans tend to point out in Kieran Culkin’s family drama Succession is how hilarious it is. Be it the constant ‘F*ck Offs’ from Brian Cox’s Logan Roy or lead star Jeremy Strong’s cringy rap song about his on-screen father, the show has multiple memorable moments that lend itself to hilarity.
However, the debate is on about whether Succession is a comedy or a drama (or a dramedy). Despite the funny instances, it is not along the same veins as say, Hacks or Abbott Elementary and has more dramatic conflicts than comedic. While fans have been debating this, actor Jeremy Strong reportedly even expressed the same to Culkin.

Universal Pictures has debuted a teaser trailer for the highly anticipated sequel ‘M3gan 2.0.
Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.
Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defence contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia, the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.
With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN and give her a few upgrades,...
