The second season (or “Part”) of The Jinx is arriving on HBO nine years after the conclusion of the first and, wholly coincidentally, right on the eve of the Jewish observance of Passover.
This timing has me thinking of “Dayenu,” the festive song in which we recite the various miracles of the Exodus, one at a time and each followed by the declaration of “Dayenu,” meaning “It would have been enough.” So… Leading us out of Egypt (“Dayenu!”), parting the Red Sea (“Dayenu!”), giving us the Torah (“Dayenu!”) and so on.

Rightly or wrongly, streaming stocks have been judged by subscriber numbers. It’s not a complete picture of a company’s business, but it’s a key metric for judging the health of a platform. That’s why Netflix surprised investors by announcing it will no longer provide subscriber numbers starting next year.
In its letter to investors, Netflix said, “In our early days, when we had little revenue or profit, membership growth was a strong indicator of our future potential. But now we’re generating very substantial profit and free cash flow (Fcf). We are also developing new revenue streams like advertising and our extra member feature, so memberships are just one component of our growth. In addition, as we’ve evolved our pricing and plans from a single to multiple tiers with different price points depending on the country, each incremental paid membership has a very different business impact.

The cycle of quarterly earnings reports from top media companies is beginning again. Netflix is the first streaming provider to give customers and analysts a peak at its first results for 2024, and as expected the streamer has continued to grow. The streamer added 9.33 million customers in the first three months of this year, bringing its new total to 269.6 million. Netflix was able to add 2.53 million customers in the United States and Canada, increasing its Ucan total to 82.66 million. This represents a 7% year-over-year growth and eight consecutive quarters of positive subscriber totals in the region.

Moving to the Asia-Pacific region, Netflix added 2.16 million new customers for a total of 47.5M. Europe, the Middle East, and Africa added 2.92M new Netflix subscribers, and Latin America pulled in 1.72M more. In total, the streamer experienced 16% year-over-year growth in paid customers.
The streamer’s quarterly results exceeded Wall Street expectations.

Many documentary filmmakers want their work on the big screen and not small. So, what gives? Why isn’t that happening?
One could argue that we haven’t seen a doc boom in cinemas since 2018 which served up such breakouts as Won’t You Be My Neighbor ($22.8M), Three Identical Strangers ($12.3M) and Rbg ($14M). The pandemic is partially to blame as audiences have savored non-fiction stories on streaming, i.e. the Netflix series, Tiger King.
“It’s not that it doesn’t work theatrically,” explained Lionsgate EVP Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Charlotte Koh who was part of the SXSW session “How to Tell True Stories: Narrative vs. Documentary”.
“It’s becoming more competitive to get people’s attention because there is so much documentary product out there that can be watched through streamers and other ways,” Koh added.

Buckle up to pay even more, Netflix subscribers. In its Q4 shareholder letter, the company all but assured another price hike in the near future.
The company’s letter included this sentence: “As we invest in and improve Netflix, we’ll occasionally ask our members to pay a little extra to reflect those improvements, which in turn helps drive the positive flywheel of additional investment to further improve and grow our service.”
Netflix last raised prices in October of 2023. In July of last year, the company's CFO said Netflix wouldn't raise prices until mid-2024.
Netflix may feel it has the momentum to apply another price hike since it just had its best quarter of domestic subscriber growth since the pandemic-fueled leap of Q2 2020. Netflix added nearly 3 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada to end 2023.

However, buried deep in its letter to shareholders was news that we had anticipated, but nonetheless were not looking forward to; Netflix is raising its prices on some of its plans. Netflix is adding a new feature to Standard with Ads that allows users to watch one ad-free episode once they’ve seen three ad-supported ones. The feature is intended to reward binge-watching; a recent survey found that 66% of streaming users identify as binge viewers. The popularity of true crime as a subgenre appears to have subsided dramatically in the last couple of years. Following the boom times, it seems following the uber-success of Tiger King, the film, television and podcasting staple has receded somewhat from public consciousness. Although there is no shortage of new titles littering the catalogues of streaming services week on week, two new titles with antipodean links feel like a modest but successful return to the spotlight.
Speaking of Tiger King, the first of these two films is one that appears to very much takes some inspiration from that Floridian nightmare. It does it better, though, I would say.

Netflix’s “Tiger King,” about a gaggle of eccentric cat breeders in Florida, was a marker of the pandemic’s dog days for us all with its March 2020 release and so most prefer the exploitative docuseries to remain a figment of the past. But various series or made-for-tv documentaries released since have attempted to huff off its formula: lifting the lid off the trash can of society for a look inside. Director Thomas Tancred’s “Last Stop Larrimah” is not quite like this, as this nearly two-hour Max documentary about the quirky townsfolk of a small locality in the Northern Territory of Australia, population 11, is never exploitative so much as endeared to its subjects. Bhagavan “Doc” Antle, best known for his time on the Netflix documentary Tiger King, has been banned for five years from owning or trading exotic animals.
Antle was also fined $10,000. According to the Virginia State Court, he was sentenced Tuesday for illegally purchasing endangered lion cubs for his Myrtle Beach Safari Zoo in South Carolina.
Antle became famous after he was featured in the 2020 Netflix docuseries Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem, and Madness, which became a worldwide phenomenon amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
Antle was convicted of two counts of wildlife trafficking and two counts of conspiring to wildlife traffic, both in June, which were all felonies.
The $10,000 fine represented the maximum fine of $2,500 for each of his four charges.
Antle has also been indicted on charges of money laundering from smuggling illegal immigrants. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of these charges.

Writers and actors in Hollywood may be ready to head back to work. That’s according to CNBC reporter David Faber, who states that representatives of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) sat down with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on Wednesday and they are “near agreement” on a deal.
Another meeting is scheduled for Thursday, according to a joint statement released by the WGA and AMPTP. Sources close to the talks told Faber that they’re optimistic Thursday’s session will lead to a deal, but if it doesn’t the strike that first began in May could continue through the end of 2023.
