Aloha, spooky nerds!
When I set out to collect the week’s best in paranormal pop culture news, I knew ahead of time I wanted to give a shout to Netflix’s Dead End: Paranormal Park. I have been waiting to check it out for some time, and it delivered as an emotionally intelligent, fun show for all ages. And I figured there would be other movie and TV news within the realm of the weird. What I did not expect was the real deal stuff that dropped this week. Not only did China release a report about alien civilizations but the whole dang city of Amarillo, Texas went on record with a video still of… something caught on camera.
Before we dive in, don’t forget to continue the strange talk with our weekly paranormal pop culture Talking Strange podcast and video series hosted by yours truly, and available on Apple Podcasts,...

Timmy Turner was an average kid that no one understood. Now, in the first trailer for “The Fairly Oddparents: Fairly Odder,” we get to meet some other members of his family.
The new series, set to hit Paramount+ at the end of March, focuses on Timmy’s cousin, Vivian “Viv” Turner (Audrey Grace Marshall), and her new stepbrother, Roy Raskin (Tyler Wladis), as they navigate life in Dimmsdale with the help of the wacky fairies we know and love: Cosmo and Wanda.
Timmy himself will make an appearance in order to gift Cosmo and Wanda to the kids. And yes, he’s still wearing his classic pink hat. But, in place of his pink shirt, he’s wearing a Princeton sweatshirt — which might surprise fans of the original series, considering his relationship with school.

WWE Superstar Mike “The Miz” Mizanin is guest-starring on Nickelodeon’s “Side Hustle,” and just like his main job and those acting roles in the (post-John Cena) “Marine” movies, it’s a fairly physical gig.
On “Side Hustle,” Mizanin plays Jujutsu star Clint Kickwood, who grunts out “Kick-wood!” as he kicks down Jaget’s (Jacques Chevelle) dojo door.
Kickwood was “hired by a very sorry young man,” he tells Jaget. That sorry young man was Munchy, Jaget’s little bro. Probably extra-sorry now because of the door.
As Clint Kickwood explains, “Clint Kickwood doesn’t just kick stuff, I fix stuff!”
He definitely does seem to kick an awful lot of stuff — especially when he played twins in the movie “Double Kick.” But his mission here is more one of mending a brotherly relationship.

Welcome to this week’s “Just for Variety.”
Michael K. Williams is another life lost too soon. While we wait for the official cause of death, it’s been reported that drug paraphernalia was found near the 54-year-old Williams’ body and authorities are investigating his demise as an overdose. The history of Hollywood is marked by so many similar endings. While no two deaths from addiction are alike, one thing that most in our industry have in common is the struggle of artistic souls falling deep into substance abuse before trying to reclaim their lives with recovery. Williams was open and honest about his demons. “A lot of people often think that when a person puts down the drug or the alcohol that all the problems go away. That couldn’t be further from the truth,” the actor said this year during an appearance on Tamron Hall’s talk show.

Eighteen months after revealing publicly that he transitioned about two decades before, Nickelodeon star Michael D. Cohen launched the Trans Youth Acting Challenge in December to help trans and nonbinary youth break into the business. He received 200 applications for 15 spots in a virtual master class he teaches.
And now, for the first time, Cohen reveals that one participant, 13-year-old trans actor Sasha A. Cohen (no relation) has been cast on his series “Danger Force” along with his twin sister Natalie R Cohen. The teens will appear on the June 19 episode, which Cohen also directed.
“I want Sasha to see his own power as an actor and as a human,” Cohen tells Variety. “I want him to feel proud of his work and feel real confident in himself in every aspect and to know that he will help change kids’ lives by being the first kid of trans experience on Nickelodeon in live action.

They may be young, but the young animated characters who make up the Rugrats are not to be dismissed.
Nickelodeon stopped making original episodes of the iconic series in 2004, but will re-launch the program in 2021, reuniting many of the actors who gave the toddlers at the center of the series voice and adding a wide array of new actors to many of their parents. “It’s an enormous responsibility. It’s such a beloved franchise,” says Brian Robbins, president of ViacomCBS’ Nickelodeon, in an interview. “We have a lot of the original creative team back including the voice cast of all the babies. That’s exciting and that’s a giant stamp of approval.”

Many kids love to watch TV, but have little desire to learn the intricacies of the business behind it. Nickelodeon aims to change that dynamic.
The ViacomCBS kids-media giant will host a showcase on March 18 at 4 p.m., all part of the advertising-sales session known as TV’s “upfront” market. The presentation aims to lure many of the advertising and media-buying executives Nickelodeon needs to fuel its operations. But it’s also something children can also enjoy.
“Everyone has been living in a virtual world for a year, so we wanted to do something different,” explains Brian Robbins, Nickelodeon’s president, to Variety in an interview. “We thought, ‘Why not do an upfront through the eyes of the audience, as opposed to the eyes of the partners?’ Since families are home together, and a lot of our partners have children, let’s make something that can be a co-viewing event.

The team, led by Nick executives Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin, will oversee development, current series and studio content for both the Nickelodeon and Awesomeness brands. Syrinthia Studer will continue in her role overseeing the combined live-action film studio. All three report to ViacomCBS Kids & Family president Brian Robbins.
The move to streamline the division’s live-action operations comes as Shelley Zimmerman, executive vice president of live-action for Awesomeness, has opted stepped down from her position and exit the company after nearly six years.
Current live-action series at Nick include the “All That” revival, the “Henry Danger” spinoff “Danger Force” and Tyler Perry’s “Young Dylan,” among others. Recent live-action series from Awesomeness include “PEN15” and “Light as a Feather” at Hulu and the two-season drama “Trinkets” at Netflix.

Nickelodeon and Bet got choice spots as ViacomCBS held its first remote upfronts event today with the usual array of inside mocking from Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah and James Corden.
The kids network and African American-focused network got standalone presentations at the event, which was streamed to advertisers and featured a slew of the company’s talent including an Imagine-esque singalong, although there was little attention on layoff-hit nets such as Comedy Central.
The company touted Nickelodeon shows such as Are You Afraid of the Dark?, which is coming back for a second season, Tyler Perry’s Young Dylan, The Crystal Maze and Danger Force, while also highlighting upcoming titles such as SpongeBob Squarepants spin-off Kamp Koral, Baby Shark’s Big Show, a Star Trek animated series, Imagine Kids + Family drama The Astronauts and the return of The Rugrats.

Mike Caron is doing a lot more with his favorite program than just binge-watching it.
Caron has long worked on the Nickelodeon series “Henry Danger,” and directed the first episode of a new sequel series, “Danger Force. “ The show, which debuted earlier this year, centers on a team of four young super-novices and the more experienced veteran, Captain Man, who must train them.
The heroes have their work cut out for them tomorrow night – and Caron is quietly helping them behind the scenes.
On Saturday night, Nickelodeon will present a special episode of “Danger Force” that is not among the ViacomCBS network’s initial order for the series. With production of many shows shuttered by the coronavirus pandemic, “Force” producers and cast thought they could entertain fans by making an extra “Danger” episode with the cast scattered at their various homes – playing their characters hunkered down in a room, a closet,...

“One Day at a Time” has found another way to produce a new, original episode in this time of quarantine: animation. Pop TV has picked up its first-ever animation special, an original “One Day at a Time” episode that will premiere later this spring.
The decision to produce an animated episode came after production of the multi-camera comedy was put on hold in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. The show’s stars will voice their own characters, and they will be joined by celebrity guests announced at a later date.
While some single-camera comedies have produced animated episodes, executive producer Norman Lear said in a statement, “In my 97 years, I’ve never known of a multicam comedy to animate a single episode as a special. Even this I get to experience!”
Jonas Diamond, executive producer and co-owner of Smiley Guy Studios in Toronto, will oversee the animation. The episode...
