| Spoof Short Showing Doctor Who At Its Best And Worst
UNIT is an acronym of United Nations Intelligence Taskforce which was introduced in DOCTOR WHO in the 1968 adventure The Invasion . They were led by Brigadier Alistair Gordon Lethbridge Stewart in the previous year in The Web Of Fear and because it was a good idea by erasing master tapes of television because it saves time and storage place if you didn't see episode 3 of The Web Of Fear then you'll never see Lethbridge's Stewart's on screen debut because the episode has been scrubbed . Well done the BBC because The Brigadier is as highly a regarded a character as any of the Doctors and for people of a certain age DOCTOR WHO is all about the Brigadier leading his men in to battle against monsters that were nearly always bullet proof

This is a spoof recruitment film done like those adverts you see recruiting for the army voiced by Dexter Fletcher and showing lots of clips from the classic show . I'm afraid it probably won't appeal to the fans of NuWho who only have become aware of the show since the 2005 resurrection because it shows monsters that are from the fertile mind of writers when it wasn't really possible to do their creations justice such as the Gell Guards from The Three Doctors and a Stegosaurus from Invasion Of The Dinosaurs but at least we see a clip of Cybermen which are infinitely superior from the ones seen in Nuwho . It also points out that woman can join UNIT as soldiers but this was confined to the 1989 story Battlefield which was the worst excrement ever broadcast under the DOCTOR WHO banner from 1963-89

One other thing of interest is that it gives a phone number which got me very curious when this spoof was broadcast in December 1993 , so curious in fact that I did something very sad and phoned the number to be greeted by a message from the Brigadier saying that next month the BBC would be following up a repeat of Planet Of The Daleks with the 1973 UNIT story The Green Death . Being terminally sad I phoned the number again a few weeks later to find out hat the number gave road information involving traffic cones so if you want to battle plastic cones on a motorway join UNIT today
