I watched the original series The Royal and enjoyed it. This picks up the same hospital in modern times and continues the mix of comedy, drama, soap opera, always wrapping up within the 30-minute time frame. All well and good.

    MAJOR SPOILER FOLLOWS-- BE WARNED

I got to episode 50 of this single season and was INFURIATED that it ended the same way as the FINAL episode of the original series, namely with a principle character in surgery! That's it! Does he survive? Who knows? Several relationship angles were left dangling, too. Cliffhangers are traditional at the end of a season. But when the series is cancelled??

The original series also ended with Dr. Ormerod (father of the modern series' Dr. Jonathan) in surgery after being shot by an intruder. And that was all she wrote! Absolutely maddening.

If anyone decides to watch this and has read my comments so far-- and I do recommend the series-- just watch 49 episodes and skip the last one. You might be tempted to throw something at your TV!
  • The story lines covering the staff of the present day fictional St. Aidans hospital in the Yorkshire region of the U.K. were well acted by a very good cast. The difference with the present day version of the hospital programme from the original The Royal programme with it's all star cast was that the present day programme was crammed into half hour shows. The rapid pace of each episode left many viewers to turn away from the show, and the fact that its cast didn't include the veteran actors that the original series had. The fact that the final episode had several cliff hangers is very sad. I really wish that the programme continued for a few seasons, but due to the lack of public support this potentially great series was ended. I shall not give any spoilers other than this, just watch the episodes and get wrapped up in the characters within the show. You'll be disappointed that the series ended after 50 episodes.
  • I started watching this just after The Royal ended and I thought it might be in the same vein - but not.

I understand that it's supposed to be 40 years later - but the whole vibe is just - ewwwww.

The first episode has something that echoes that last episode of The Royal and it's never addressed.

The surgeon is awful, the radiologist is awful, the porters are about the same, but it's like they took the same show and threw it up in to the and put it back but the pieces are all wrong!

What started out as a cute drama, ended up as collection of incompetence. Personal dramas of inexperienced nurses that aren't even qualified to be candy-stripers, drowns out professional doctors. And don't get me started on the non-stop sexual harassment dished out buy the sad excuse of a radiologist; and lack of management to promote any code of ethics. If you have never worked in a hospital, or needed to be treated in one, you might find it a cute little drama, otherwise it is frustrating to see a healthcare facility with such a lack of professionalism.
