A drama centered on a classical pianist who has been diagnosed with ALS and the brash college student who becomes her caregiver.
To show awareness for this disease many people did the ALS ice bucket challenge, Hilary Swank included. Then her character portrayed the devastating effects of this disease.
Why is it that we want the ones that don't see us, instead of the ones that do?
Towards the end of the movie when Kate is in the advanced stages of ALS, she is shown sitting upright in her wheelchair and speaking in a labored fashion. Patients in this condition are unable to sit upright because the muscles in their backs are no longer receiving signals from the brain. The same is true of the muscles in the throat and jaw making speech impossible.
