Wayyyyyy too long for this over the top family drama. Taking you back to the 1980s predictable from the start. Heroine had awhole of 20 mins that is including songs. Only saving grace is vijay comedy scenes and dance. One time watchable only. Huge star cast total let down as all characters are half baked. It's time for vijay to invest in decent scripts rather then dishing out garbage . Quality over quantity. Maybe to start with picking roles for his age. Kept checking time and waiting for it to finish. In the end yup you knew the ending in the first 5 mins into the movie. Sj Surya cameo was a worthy surprise.
  • Varisu is all about family values. No matter how unforgivable one person's mistakes be, if they are family then all is forgiven. Having said that, Varisu sticks to the age old family drama template mixed with masala elements to do justice to it's superstar lead. The rebellious younger son who is ousted from the family makes a comeback to mend the broken family. With enough father-son, mother-son, brothers sentiment, Vamsi Paidipally presents a done to death screenplay as a festival treat.

To speak the positives, the film is lavishly shot with vibrant colors. Vijay seems to having sheer fun playing this character and several ordinary scenes get elevated solely by his performance. With a runtime of 2hrs 50mins, the film is way too long but it is those funny moments with Vijay that makes it almost work. The predictable screenplay, weak villain and weakly written supporting cast doesn't offer anything new content wise. The action scenes too don't stand out. Despite all this, it is not a bad watch at all but Vijay saves it from being entirely bland.
  • Please don't spam the ratings like this, if a movie isn't good enough accept the truth.

There's nothing new to watch except Vijay acting in a family oriented script after a long time but the issue is it feels like everything isn't getting together reparative story line and a blunt cat and mouse game between the Protagonist and the antagonist is making it even more lagging Even if the story is predictable the screenplay could save some movies like Thiruchitrambalam but here nothing grabs our intrest other than Thalapathy Vijay .

There's almost 9k ratings but non have the guts to post a review that shows how biased some fans are try to accept the truth cause it would improve our industry to the next level Let's make them clear that content wins not just the actor's.

I'm really disappointed with the movie..... Total waste of money and lost interest while watching the movie itself.... Same old style of Vijay all over the movie..Similar expressions. No twists and turns..... Able to easily guess what can happen in the next set of scenes.....Why do we even have Anthony character? Rashmika appearance is total waste of money.....Background music isn't that great. Felt like watching a long Television serial in less than 3 hr window because there was a problem created followed by a solution immediately and this continous throughout the movie.... Comedy isn't good at all. Overall, waste of time watching the movie.

  • Opinion : Overall Varisu , though it has nothing special or new by means of content , it has some good commercial and entertaining elements done by Thalapathy Vijay and that us what makes Varisu a decent enough watch for the general Audience

Positives : Vijay Sense of humor worked well all over without any irritating mannerism . Thaman Music and BGM keeps us engaging and not bored . Avoided many Cringy sequences . Dialogues are enjoyable . Sarathkumar role was mature.

Negatives : Rashmika is not even made use except songs. Few Background VFX CG works throughout the film is seen barely that diverts our concentration towards the film . Flat and Predictable Storyline. Could have added few twists or suspense sequences to make it more interesting. Emotions worked in parts only.

Verdict : Overall Vamshi has given a simple film with some enjoyable moments for the Targeted audience for this festival that will work well with fans and family audience alone .

    Rating : 3 / 5

Go without expectation. It would be a decent festival watch for fans and fun filled watch for family Audience.
  • Strictly for Thalapathy fans. Movie has the same old basic plot that we have seen a lot. Same old typical family business story just to enhance the story director has added more characters to stretch the film and make it a proper entertainer but fails to deliver. 1st half feels very stretched with long boring screenplay and nothing new to add in the storyline whereas 2nd half is good as compare to 1st. Vijay's acting steals the show as compare to rest of the actors because while seeing the movie the director has pretty much involved in Vijay's character and it seems like it. Rest of the cast was average nothing that different as compare to the story. Rashmika is totally wasted. She is there only for songs and distraction. She looks good in songs though but not in the movie. As a movie lover this film is just an average for me though it has action, emotions and songs by the due to long stretched screenplay and old storyline this movie completely falls down. Only for Thalapathy fans. (4/10)
  • Vamsi has delived a product that exceeds the expectaions for fans to celebrate for the festival. Eventhough movie storyline is simple till the end and dose not have emotional connect. Vijay's screen presence and manerism managed to keep audiance engagged till the end.

Thaman has scored great bgms for the movie All other artist have not been used effectively but all did their part well notably vijay yogi babu combo worked well. Vijay dance numbers are treat to his fans.

If you dont like comercial elements the movie may not work for you but for general audiance it will fullfill the expectaions and they can leave the cinema hall with joy. Vamsi made it simple and neat.
  • RATED 6/10 Language: Tamil Media Partner: Amazon prime Source: Nil

Movie starts with sentimental note and colourful song. Vijay is in full energy in all aspects, especially in songs. The first 30mins sentiments and most of the second half are more cliche and routine. Prakash raj is in worst form, his character is very average and just irritates.

Later movie starts to go in good entertainer path in first half. Director brings back old Ghilli vijay in comedy scenes and sentiment scenes

The cancer sentiment and tear jerking scenes worked well with feel good way instead of serial way, director succeeded in this writing in first half

All the hype and sentiment went to vein in the highly predictable second half. It has mass moments, but it is diluted with HIGHLY predictable scenes and character.... Not even single scene is original in the second half, all are already done and dusted in masala movies already

One time watchable for the first half and songs....

I'm not opposed to family drama films. But I'm having trouble connecting with this one. A wealthy family is experiencing family conflict. Our hero arrives to preach everyone, making them realize their error and directing them in the right direction. A large mansion with limited people. The restroom alone is the size of a football stadium. Everyone is driving expensive cars and talking about billions of dollars and share market. Majority of the audience members were unfamiliar with the rich life and they were unable to connect with the movie.

Lets come to our hero who preach his mother, father, brother, sister in law, police man, servant, Villans, audience list goes on.. OMG i cant tolerate. U cant forceful keep a preaching dialogue just to show he is some kind of saint. Just one time(accidentally) watchable, such a bore to core.

    Family!
    Warning: Spoilers
The world is very fast paced with the rapid growth and access to technology. Once in a while it's nice to look back and say thanks to FAMILY. This movie for me touched all the right chords, from music to acting to comedy to dance to emotions literally had it all, a perfect family entertainer, however I feel Vijay needs to go slow with his dance moves he was literally killing it there. Like Vijay in the movie says every family, rather person has his own flaws, don't let go of your family for petty things. You have only one family!!! People critical of this movie might rub it off as one from the 90s, in so many ways we were happier then than now.

'Friends may come and go but FAMILY is for forever'! Thanks thalapathy for this beauty!
  • I think Vijay had a list of TODO/wishes and one of them was to make a direct Telugu film, this film checks off that item from his wishlist, that's how I see this film.

It's a typical Telugu commercial masala film and not much different from other thousands of Telugu films that have ever been made.

One slight differentiator is that it is directly linked to the Hindi film: K3G, which came 22 years back, and if you have watched & liked that film, the probability of you liking this film goes up tremendously. I have an emotional connection with K3G and hence the first half of this film gelled very well, especially the mother-son sentiment worked really well for me, that's the best part of the film for me.

Similarly, there are many other Telugu film references like the previous Allu-Arjun films' board room meeting scene and it might connect with some other people and so on & so forth, that's the beauty/Pros of making a collage film.

Vijay's mannerisms with dialogues from other multiple films mocking others & a few times in Redin Kingsley's mannerisms lifted the scenes to a different level altogether. The thing is even with different hairstyles (IDK, if it's a wig) & his stomach puffed up, he's still watchable.

And all the other actors did play their roles very well, especially the 2 who played the parents produced top-notch performances that take us into an emotional roller-coaster ride, that's the beauty of having the senior most actors in the film.

Basically, it's a wholesome family entertainer with gameplay within the family business and hence it might give a bit of a feel like watching a serial, especially in the 2nd half where the film gets slow but still not bad enough at all as you literally get to have that satisfaction of having full meals after watching the entire film.

Overall, it is definitely a one-time watch if you want to have a wholesome feeling all from one single film, especially if you like watching the usual Telugu commercial films.
  • Once again, this is another film revered by Vijay fans, who worship him like a deity. They probably do a puja for Vijay every week, judging by their dedication to this mediocre actor.

Varisu is pretty bad. The first half had me convinced I was seeing the worst film ever made (then again, I only try to watch films with good reviews, although I have seen the likes of Radhe, Cobra, and Ra. One). I alternated between sleeping and laughing - laughing at the superlatively cringe scenes featuring Vijay.

The second half was better, but there's not a high bar to beat to be better. It was bad to below average, the second half, with a few funny scenes embedded here and there, but overall the film feels quite stale.

Someone fire the CG and VFX team, as well ad the BGM team. The thunderous, intrusive BGM kept me from sleeping in the first half (there is a booming BGM for every single character; my friend described it as being like a quandale dingle reel with drums, considering how jarring and persistent the music was.

They managed to make a film worse than Beast.
  • Varisu (2023) : Movie Review -

Vamshi Paidipally teams up with superstar Vijay for a family masala entertainer, Varisu. This is nothing but Vanshi and Vijay's attempt at remodelling Allu Arjun's "Ala Vaikunthapurumoolu" (which celebrates its 3rd anniversary today, along with its Hindi remake Shehzada dropping the trailer on the same day). Too many family drama cliches for me in one day. Vamshi has done 5 films till date, and he has always worked with a new superstar each time, so Varisu was made for Vijay after he worked with Prabhas, Jr. NTR, Ram Charan, Nagarajuna, Karthi and Mahesh Babu. It seems that he is more desperate for superstars than for his storytelling. Opiri Thozha and Maharshi still tried to tackle important subjects, but other works haven't been anything but old cliches. Varisu is no different. It brings all the old scenes of family masala flicks together, mixes Vijay's style, a few references from his movies like Thupakki and Master, an 80s background score, daily soap style pauses, and romantic dance numbers in one bottle that drops water for almost 3 hours.

Vijay Rajendran (Vijay), the youngest son of an eminent business magnate, Rajendran Palanisamy (R. Sarathkumar), is disowned and thrown out of the house as he refused to join the family business, deciding to launch a food delivery startup instead. Vijay returns home for a family function and learns about his father's illness and that he has only a few months to live. To provide him a happy farewell, Vijay decides to take over the business and save it from his brothers, Ajay (Shaam) and Jay (Shrikanth). How Vijay saves the business and family both is all you get to see in Varisu.

Varisu is an outdated script, but that's not the major issue here. It's the screenplay that spoils both fun and soul here. There are cliches, yes, but how badly have they been written? Why does Vijay's character have to behave like a child before every aggressive moment? I mean, we all know that he is "the hero" and he is going to smash the opponents. We all know that he always has plans and comebacks to hit back, but why does he have to make a childish caricature for that? Moreover, why do you have to stretch a simple, 2-hour story to 170 minutes? Predictability is common nowadays, but it's even beyond that. You start murmuring dialogues even before they are delivered by the protagonist. As a whole, it's the screenplay and idealistic approach that turn the tables against Varisu.

Performance-wise, I don't really think that it was a film for "acting." Vijay gets to do everything he has been doing for years, just to make sure that you get bored of it at least this time. Action, romance, heroic dialogues, dance numbers, swaggy walks, and what not. Vijay does all of this, but in the meantime, he forgets to act. Rashmika Mandanna looks so cute that you'd like to kiss her, and that's the only reason why she has been sighed for this film (or maybe every film she does). Sarathkumar and Prabhu don't get enough chances, whereas Shaam and Srikanth get chances but waste them. Jayasudha plays the same old housewife and the ever-so-kind mother without any efforts, and Prakash Raj hardly does anything different. The supporting cast is there only to fill the frames, nothing else.

Coming to the technical aspects, Varisu is more like an unbearable daily soap than a feature film. Except for those "3-times-repeat-shots" and "Dhin ta na ta na," it has everything that can rule the nomination charts of the "Indian Television Awards 2023." The cinematography and action may please you, but only if you haven't seen much in the way of action flicks (I mean, which Vijay film hasn't really got it?). The music is somewhat good. You will enjoy the lavish set design and choreography, but why have an overdose of it? Vamshi Paidipally could have attempted another important subject after Opiri and Maharshi, but he decided to make this one. It's like getting out on a duck after hitting half a century in the previous two matches. As a whole, Varisu is strictly for Vijay and Rashmika's fans, who can sit for 3 hours only to see them moving on the screens. I wouldn't even recommend Veeram and Ala Vaikunthapurumoolu to content lovers, forget Varisu.

    RATING - 4/10*

We can see our 2k times thalapathy.yogi babu and thalapathy combobwas very good.. The story is how to take care of our family . Even though if we are high business people we have to take care of family... Nice story. Nice action and comedy. Congratulations to the team. Vamsi director and dil raju producer..And the actress rashmika she did her portion very well... And the 1 min -30 sec dance of thalapathy vijay in ....ranjithamae was very good the whole theatr enjoying alot of this portion.. This pongal everyone get entertainment from varisu. Must watch in theater.. Happy Varisu pongal to all..
  • Vamsi has given us the same old wine in a new bottle. Vamsi has completely relied on his lead actor to deliver and Vijay has done exactly that. The first half of the movie is tiring as it takes lots of time to settle in to the story. Second half on the other hand is entertaining with Vijay taking complete control of it. The problem with the movie is the absence of a deadly villain. Prakash Raj whose previous movies with Vijay were nothing short of perfection,he has nothing to do here. The emotions fell short in most places and the slow motions and the Closeups especially in the first half made it feel like a tv drama.

Yogibabu's humour works well. Rashmika, like every other heroine in Vijay movies has nothing much to do than the two songs.

The casting of the family members is good with sarathkumar delivering yet another good performance. The songs and bgs are okayish when compared to his previous movies like master and beast the songs may feel underwhelming.

Overall Vamsi has fine-tuned a script tailor-made for Vijay who shines perfectly in it, giving us a watchable family drama.

Buy 1 ticket for this movie , so that you can cover 3 to 4 telugu old movies like Bhramotsavam, Agnatavasi, Ala vikuntapuram lo, Gowtam Ssc. This movie is combination of all the above mentioned movies. I wonder why Vijay agreed to this movie. I generally like vijay's movie but this is too boring. Watch his previous movies Master, Bigil which had good content but this is like old wine in old bottle . Songs , dance and comedy are like a make up for dead body which has no use.

Atleast 40 minutes could be trimmed.

    Very bad selection by Vijay.

Everything is minus in this move No plus points to sy.
  • To tell the truth, this story is very sensitive and the action is made at a very good level... And the story becomes very interesting... You can watch the story without any boredom until the end... I am very impressed with Vijay's excellent performance.. Really. Cows are also going crazy... It's so great... I don't find anything wrong with the story even if you take the side of the story... Because even if they say, we can get a beautiful message from this story for my life as well as for everyone living in the world... Family really means a lot. A wonderful bond... family, mother, father, children are all one strong chain.... on one hand, a beautiful bird's nest... this beautiful bird's nest is tied by these chains... so even if one of these chains is broken, this bird powder can fall. .. It's like that, even if one person leaves the family, the family falls apart... And there is only one person to make that bird's nest beautiful, that's our mother... As the story says, when this family falls apart , mother really can't bear it.. Really, every mother alive in this world eats No one will let this family fall apart. Mother is the strongest chain of this kudoo... and so is father's love... on the other hand, the brotherly bond... keep the bird powder with these three straight... so that it never falls..." No family is perfect.. but we have a family (the strongest bond in the world)....." these are the things I got from this story... to tell you the truth, this is the best story I have seen this year. I love this story so much.
  • Positives: 1. VIJAY: Thalapathy Vijay's screen presence is as usual enjoyable in this movie. Both in comedy and emotional scenes, Vijay sir scored well. Thalapathy Vijay still looks young today.

    2. SONGS AND DANCE: Thaman's songs worked well in this movie. Vijay sir's dance really explains how dedicated he is towards the making.

    3. ONE OR TWO EMOTIONAL MOMENTS: Luckily, emotional scenes didn't feel irritating and it will satisfy the family audience.

    4. NOT FELT BORED: This movie surely will hold you for its entire runtime of around 2 hrs and 50 mins without feeling bored despite its emotional and family moments.

    5. COMIC TIMING OF VIJAY AND YOGI BABU: Generally, I'm not much of a fan of Yogi Babu and I felt most of his jokes cringe. But surprisingly Yogi Babu mocking Thalapathy and vice Versa worked well.

    6. ACTION BLOCKS: Ignoring the logic, the action blocks really worked well and are enjoyable.

    7. SJ SURYA'S CAMEO: SJ SURYA'S cameo (which I can't reveal much) worked well and it's enjoyable.

NEGATIVES: 1. LAZY WRITING: This movie falls flat in the writing point. There is no new scene in the movie. We have seen all the scenes in some movies. The scenes are either inspired or copied from old movies.

    2. WEAK SCREENPLAY: Ofcourse, we shouldn't expect anything in the family movies. But all the scenes are extremely predictable. Sometimes even dialogues are predictable.

    3. LACK OF EMOTIONAL CONNECT IN MANY SCENES: Since this movie explicitly deals with the problems involved in rich family, many scenes cannot be connected emotionally by the general audience and weak direction is also another reason why we cannot connect some emotional scenes.

    4. WEAK CHARACTERIZATION: Except Vijay, Sarath Kumar and Jaya Sudha's character, no character was written properly. Prakash Raj's role as a villain was completely wasted.

    5. EDITING AND CG: Some scenes are easily identifiable that they were taken by using green mat. Could have concentrated well on this part. But making and set design were good.

    6. SOME ARTIFICIALLY ADDED MOMENTS: Emotional scenes involving Srikanth, his wife and his daughter just felt like a scene made to change Srikanth as a good person. But dialogue (Dealing with lack of affection towards the kid) in that scenes worked well.

    7. ONLY UPS AND NO DOWNS: Vijay is dealing all the problems easily and so there is no thrill in watching any of it, as we know that he will deal all the problems easily.

Overall, this film works well for a family audience and may or may not work for general audience. Watch it without keeping any expectations and it might work.

    My rating: 6/10.
  • I have booked 12 tickets for fdfs on LA Cinemas, i went with my whole family and there i felt uncomfortable watching Rashmika Mandanna and Actor Vijay's dance step and his silly jokes. I didn't have any expectations for the film, even though i felt i should have gone to films like thunivu or sembi.

I expected the film to be another Ala vaikundaporamuloo, I know there is a spelling mistake, but this is comparatively 1/1000 of Vijay's story selection.

Even you are a vijay fan, you won't like the film.

The only thing which feels okay is the bgm.

This is to actor Vijay-"Please don't select the film blindly to act if the director gave a hit film once in a lifetime".

Forgive me if a said anything wrong.

It doesn't mean to hurt anyone.
  • Like i wonder how people are rating it 1/10 by saying this is a old movie concept. I mean what? So, you're some new human being? This movie was family movie, and there's only one big problem in families which is, not having togetherness. Yeah maybe the concept is 1980's according to some of you guys, yeah it is, but this concept still exists in real life. And Vijay's styl6 is Vijay's style, but you guys have a problem with that,. Why can't you just see movie like it's your first one. Why you guys are comparing with him or previous movies. Yeah this comment isn't a review but a answer to critic.
  • While talking about positives first, Vijay's presence and acting timing is an show stealer. As always Vijay stands out as an actor along with superb performance by jaisudha madam. Even though story is predictable it keeps us entertaining throughout movie. Songs are good and art department did work well for songs. Comic scenes are extraordinary.

About cons of movie , Rashmika as an lead actress is completely useless in movie just for namesake and two songs she is involved in movie and other than songs she has an screentime of max 15mins in whole movie. Actual female lead is Jaisudha madam not rashmika. Story is pretty old one with easily predictable. If Vijay was not there in the movie it would have been disastrous only Vijay kept movie alive.

Storyline : family has to be ONE always even if the people in it were toxic.
  • Vamshi Paidipally brings his 2000s & 2010s Telugu sensibilities to feed Thalapathy Vijay's fandom. There is absolutely nothing in the film that warrants your attention. That includes the forgettable songs, repetitive gestures (Vijay extensively borrows from his greatest hits), ridiculously bad CG, truckloads of sermonizing, boring villains, and bland set-pieces. The only thing that made me laugh was the number of times the extremely contrived screenplay tried uniting a family that's dysfunctional as hell. The females, as expected, have nothing to do except sob, deal with the actions of their male counterparts, be advised, or fall in love and dance with the hero, and disappear. It makes me sad that there's still a massive audience that laps up such clichéd efforts. Now, I realize how Lokesh's Master was such a breath of fresh air in Vijay's filmography.

At least change Vijay's hairstyle, costumes, accessories, and dance moves.. GODDAMMIT!
  • Tamil movie industry aka Kollywood has come a long way. The expensive on movies is larger then expectations. From those ambassadors cars to Rolls-Royce, well is a sign how much investors are ready to invest, with the star power.

Joseph Vijay, the most highest paid actor in India and i am still trying to figure as to why it is so. Have seen some recent movie but i am still trying to figure out the big why.

Nothing in the movie, same old repeated stuff that you have watched over and over again. The movie is more like a star plus drama and nothing more. You can easily guess the next scene and even the next dialogue.

With Vijay any other cast would be simply as guest appearance and so was the case with Rashmika Mandanna. A scene or two with two songs which literally forced in to the movie.

If you are a Kollywood fan, well watch it, perhaps you can make more sense out of it.

If you are from other part of world, pass on this one, it's a complete waste.
  • Warning: Spoilers
This movie has everything as Dil Raju said and movie is going to storm the box office. Can see a Gilli Vijay back with such energy. Vamsi you have shown why you are the best director. Great movie and everyone watch on theaters and enjoy Pongal happily. Frame by frame Vamsi has crafted the movie & purely with class. Vijay cuteness is overloaded, sentiments, dance, joke & love. It's a well packed movie with lots of goosebumps. Watch it in theatres and you'll enjoy as family. Those who rate this movie low can either be Ajith fans or Vijay haters. But the movie is thoroughly great & we enjoyed it.
