Set in Depression-era Franklin County, Virginia, a trio of bootlegging brothers are threatened by a new special deputy and other authorities angling for a cut of their profits.
Actor Shia LaBeouf drank moonshine in order to gain as authentic an appearance as possible. By his own admission his drinking and over-aggressive attitude caused co-star Mia Wasikowska to try and leave the film. He also submitted that Tom Hardy by contrast maintained his sobriety throughout the shoot and gave a better performance.
It is not the violence that sets men apart, alright, it is the distance that he is prepared to go.
During the night-time moonshiners meeting after Rakes' visit the blast of a modern day diesel locomotive air horn interrupts their discussion.
9 seconds of gory violence were removed for an R rating in the US. The film was released uncut internationally (including Canada).
