  • Did they really end the movie like that? lol

It felt like a first episode or half worked pilot for a series that was never meant to get picked up.

Now we'll never know what happens.

I gave 5 points because it had good ideas, but I took away 5 points because of the "ending" and the lack of a real conclusion. It goes nowhere.

I'm expecting lots of people to hate this movie. I hate when movies do that. It's very annoying. The Devil Inside and The Turning did the same thing. They present ideas and characters, but do nothing with them.
  • Started out with a great premise, then lost sight of it in the tangles it wove. The CGI characters had the look of those on cheap TV kids' shows, but the backgrounds in which they moved were Ghibli quality (of the past) in detail. As one of the other reviews mentioned, this was 2/3rds of a movie. That might be fortunate - character development was getting really annoying, especially that of Earwig herself.
  • I saw today that there was a new film from studio Ghibli, and I got excited. Then I watched it... I shouldn't have. The story begins a bit confusing, it's very disjointed and plays out like a montage, as the whole movie sort of seems to. Things begin to pick up around the middle, and you start to trace the movie so far, and it leads your mind to many possibilities that you can theorize may come to pass. When the time comes to deliver on even a single one of the things that were foreshadowed, it never does. The entire film feels like a budget toddler program, like something from Cocomelon... and it's insulting that it bares the Studio Ghibli name. The ending was a big slap in the face, and everything you have been anticipating gets dumped in your lap like a curtain reveal, amd the movie ends, with no rhyme or reason, it's just over. What?
  • Warning: Spoilers
Earwig, later named Erica, is dropped off at an orphanage, and grows up enjoying controlling people. One day, Erica is adopted by Bella Yaga and Mandrake. She becomes a witch's assistant, but it is boring and she can't control them. Erica discovers music named "Earwig". She ends the movie figuring out how to charm and control Bella Yaga and Mandrake, and getting everything she wants.

This is not only a bad movie, this is an offensively bad movie. I can't describe how deeply psychopathic the main character, Erica comes off, as it seems like her only goal in life is to control people. All the life, joy, beauty of a Ghibli film has been sucked out to leave a hollow, empty, plastic CG film. The visuals are ugly. The story is ugly.
  • Saw this during the world premiere, an NHK broadcast (I'm in Japan and speak Japanese) and, while the CGI was initially off-putting - it looks like every other Japanese cartoon-to-CGI adaptation but with occasional Ghibli Eyes, and plastic SF5 Ken Banana Hair on everyone - it gradually started to win me over. Then, right when the story progression suggests that the third act is going to begin, as the past catches up with everyone, so that we can bring everything to a satisfying narrative conclusion... instead, we just get a smash cut to black and the credits.

The ending 100% feels like the cliffhanger to make you want to watch the second half of the movie. Unfortunately, so far as I am aware, there IS no second half. So instead, the movie just kind of tosses a bunch of narrative threads out, ignores all of them for nearly its entire runtime, and then remembers them all juuuuuust long enough to remind you that it ignored them entirely, before suddenly grinding to a halt.

Reasonably charming at times, if you're willing to accept that basically nothing that happens in the movie matters at all, and that there's no ending. Or, in other words, it's a modern Ghibli movie, I guess. Goro Miyazaki has inherited his father's knack for telling two thirds of a story.

Ghibli and cgi don't work. The magic of hand drawn ghibli movies has been completely erased by this cgi interpretation of its style. The story itself is boring and flat, with little characterization or development. Plus all their hairs looks stringy and greasy. Not good in any format. Stop with cgi ghibli, please, and return to what made you good.

So, I did like this movie in a way that I was happy I saw it once. It's not top-tier Studio Ghibli but it certainly is fun and has charm. The problem is that they shouldn't have labelled this as a "full-length feature" cause the story just ends abruptly without any sort of conclusion. In fact it's almost structured as an episode of a kid's tv-show, which is both bad and good at the same time. And also the poster is kinda misleading? Also the trailer as well! I thought this was gonna be a movie about a girl becoming a witch and starting a rock band- that would've been really cool... and that's what the posters and trailers allude to but alas we get this sort of "prelude movie"? Perhaps SG ran out of budget to make the film longer or there's a sequel that's coming.

I like the animation actually, it's as if the SG style was translated into 3D- it does look a bit strange in some parts but I think it adds a sort of "stop motion" vibe to it, especially with how the characters move and how the surfaces look like.

I don't think it deserves such a low score like 4,7 over here, like come on- it's not awful, it has some thought and the animation isn't bad- it's just different and the story ends in a very abrupt manner. Check this one out if you've seen all SG films or have some time to spare, I think kids are gonna like this one a lot! If not then go and see SGs Kiki's Delivery Service which is a very thoughtful and emotional movie about growing up.

Barely any story, and what kind of ending was that?
  • Obviously nothing beats 2d hand drawn animation, but the cg is fine, you guys are just being mean

I saw this thru a TV Rip with poorly google translated subtitles, truly the definitive viewing experience if i could say so myself. joking aside, from the story i could make out it was super wholesome, creative and made me feel like a kid again. Also goes without saying but don't expect a profound life changing experience like Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle, this was a simple fun and creative movie with a whole lot of heart. strangely, the movie ended just as it got really interesting, which felt so abrupt because it honestly felt like the end of a first act in a 3 act movie, i'm seriously hoping for a few sequels because this was a super fun and colourful movie but judging from what they show in the credits that seems unlikely which sucks

love you goro don't let the haters discourage you from making more movies, you do you king

    Meh.
Whyyyyyyy did Ghibli go 3D computer-animated?! This just felt uninspired. A really boring witch, especially for the main villain. There's no soul here. Rewatch Howl's Moving Castle instead.
  • I watched this film with my eleven year old (at her request), and read some reviews before starting to have an idea what I was in for. By the end of the film I was actually wondering if the other reviewers had seen something else instead? This was an incredible story!

Firstly the characters. Yes, they are flawed, but flawed in the way people really are. I didn't find Earwig un likeable at all, and definitely not a psychopath as another reviewer suggested. She cared for others, just in her own way, and without a lot of outward affection which is usually demanded from girls. This was a cast full of complex characters that simply weren't tropes or stereotypes.

The ending also didn't seem abrupt or unfinished to me. If you pay attention to the personal development Earwig and her companions are going through, it has an ending which is very satisfying, but naturally doesn't tie up everything because, well, that's just not how life works. Our lives don't just reach stopping points where every question and problem we have suddenly resolves.

This was a gorgeous, nuanced film that both me and my daughter adored and I'm sure will come back to. Real Ghibli magic and unique storytelling which is so rare these days.
  • I consider myself a huge fan of all things Studio Ghibli. The worlds they create and characters they design for them are almost always well thought out and exciting. However, that doesn't mean that everything they produce is a masterpiece. The director of this movie (Goro Miyazaki) is the same who did the 2006 "Tales from Earthsea", which I consider to be one of the most lack-luster studio ghibli movies. However, that's not to say that I don't like either of these films. I simply understand that they are different from some of the other Studio Ghibli movies (like Howl's Moving Castle) and I should use a different lens for viewing them. The things that I enjoy most about Studio Ghibli movies were still here: fun characters, great music, sound desgin, and (many will disagree with me) the art design. The biggest red mark on this movie for me was the use of 3D animation. One of my favorite things about the older Studio Ghilbi movies was that every scene looked like a beautiful work of art. I don't feel like this movie caputured that with it's art style, but I still felt the underlying attention to detail was there. I loved the look of the house and especially the potion room (all are shown in the trailer). I think this movie could have been a lot better if it was done with the traditional 2D animation style, but the 3D did not all together ruin it for me. Whether or not you enjoy this movie is up to you, but go in with an open mind.
  • I like many was skeptical of the use of CGI. Let me tell you, it's bad. Looks like a mobile game. And yet that is the least of this movie's problems. There really isn't much of a plot to spoil. It's boring. It goes nowhere. It ends super suddenly as if they just stopped caring. The movie has lots of the Ghibli hallmarks: witches, close up food shots, spunky little girl protagonist, a black cat, and so on, but it feels more like a rip off of a Ghibli movie done by somebody who watched half of Kiki's Delivery Service. Extremely skippable and only memorable for how disappointed you'll feel by the end of it.
  • Devoid of all the simple aesthetics, elegant touch & magical qualities that fans have come to expect from a Studio Ghibli presentation, Earwig and the Witch marks their first foray into 3D computer-generated feature filmmaking but the story in itself is so dull, bland & uninspiring that the film as a whole turns out to be the studio's first real misfire and is a disappointment on all fronts.

Directed by Goro Miyazaki (Tales from Earthsea & From Up on Poppy Hill), the film simply fails to create any sort of intrigue or excitement from start to finish, and is so uneventful & unimaginative that despite it being about magic & witches, it never for once feels magical. The narrative has no sense of direction or purpose and there is barely any effort to make the characters compelling enough to garner our interest.

In addition to that, the studio's patented animation which over the years had played an essential role in infusing depth, richness & resonance to its hand-drawn imagery is unceremoniously replaced by computer-generated animation that not only seems rather ordinary & outdated but is also hollow, lifeless & soulless from within. There's a glossy, synthetic vibe to its images that just doesn't feel right plus the rendering is also lacking an organic flair.

Overall, Earwig and the Witch is absolutely unworthy of Studio Ghibli banner and is hands down the famed animation studio's worst entry to date. It is a departure from everything its production house stands for, and it doesn't even have the storytelling basics covered. One can't even argue that it aims for something ambitious but fails, for there is hardly any story at all. Putting a blemish on Studio Ghibli's unblemished legacy, Goro Miyazaki's latest is nothing less than an embarrassment.
  • This movie is to Miyazaki what the anti-Christ is to Christ. It's the anti-Miyazaki. Emotions, story, morals, characters - nothing makes sense. Even the normally-unimpeachable Ghibli visuals are bad; there are shows playing on Disney Junior right now that have better animation than this. Other than the basic seed of the idea, there's nothing redeemable about this movie.
  • This movie is pretty much unwatchable due to the awkward and stilted animation. This is an embarrassment to the long history of groundbreaking animation from the Ghibli studio. Pretty much any CGI from YouTube to an indie Switch game puts this movie to sham. Please don't release anymore of this garbage in the future.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I was quite shocked seeing the ending credits when I thought we were only in the middle of the movie. It's as if they ran out of budget after completing half the project. It was very disappointing.

As far as Studio Gibhli films go, this experiment with CGI was a misstep that ended up with plastic mannequin models and animation that looks like it's from 2002. However, it does have redeeming points that give it some merit in its own right, like an expressive protagonist with a uniquely proactive personality. Sure, she's a brat, but the adults were far worse. The plot was quite thin and repetitive unfortunately, the characters change their minds for little reason and the backstory wasn't used to its full potential.
  • This film makes no sense. The first scene made it seem like this was going to be interesting. Alas, the whole plot is completely unexplained, plot holes everywhere and why was Aya where she was the whole film? Aggravating. Even my nine year old was like "WTF" (almost) when the end suddenly came. Waste of time.
  • Warning: Spoilers
These are some very good characters with interesting stories to tell, but film seemed like pieces were missing. So many questions that should have been answered throughout the film were just not. Which left me confused at certain parts. I heard something about a part 2, but this film would have been really good if they added and an extra 30-45 mins of story telling.

I really want to know more about the band, 12 witches, who was chasing earwigs mom, why she felt like she had give earwig up, bella yaga and mandrakes relationship, why are they living together if they dont get along and shes afraid of him, these demons, magic and so much more. A great world is there they just need to build it.
  • If I didn't know better, I would say this was not a Ghibli film, more like some other incompetent studio that ran out of money during production and cobbled together whatever they had into this piece of junk.

A half-assed 'story' with bland, lifeless 'characters' exacerbated by the inexplicable decision to abandon the beautiful trademark animation style for garbage level cgi. Very frustrating watch because there are hints of a much better tale here that just weren't fleshed out. Hopefully someone else tries again with more skill and care.

This is first studio's ghibli in 3 D C G animated film. I love the mystery between the Mandrake and belleYaga and I love Tom's I just love talking cat. I also love how earwigs is strong like stand up belleYaga and how the Mandrake has a soft side. I also like spells earwigs use like belleYaga extra pair of hands that so funny and I love end where true is show the true and earwig decided to stay.l and all magic was cool and crazy it is amazing. I don't care what so that I give it a 9.
  • At the time of writing this review, the scope is 4.8. I don't understand why! The characters are lovely and the story makes sense. The "violence on kids" is absolutely a no-sense critic, but a step in the story, where at the end - for sure is not a spoiler - both of them will love her and eachother. At least there is no LGBT content, I can say one of the few movies available in the last few years that are "old times" with a normal family. It deserves a higher score for sure! Also the cgi is much better than 99% of the movie around, very detailed and with the "gibli" magic, and it's a mandatory step to keep the production costs in budget.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I have so many questions and frustrations with this film and it's completely underdeveloped plot.

Earwig never explores the fact that her actual name is Earwig after growing up to believe that it is Erica Wigg. Seems like that would be a profound revelation to explore. And why was she named after the band? Is she actually The Mandrake's child since we see a two second flirty scene of her mother(!?) kissing The Mandrake in a car? Speaking of her mother(!?) Was the lady with the red hair actually Earwig's mother? In the opening scene when Earwig is dropped off by her mother(?) the mother(?) leaves a note saying that she's being chased by 12 witches. Who are those 12 witches? Why was she being chased? Why did Bella Yega and The Mandrake go from seemingly normal-behaving band mates to evil witches willing to harm children and animals? Did they realize that Earwig was the daughter of their former band mate when they adopted her? Were they cursed?

The animation looked like it was made for a toddler television program and the "mean eyes" that Earwig would do was somehow truly off-putting. A spell was made to protect Earwig and Thomas but not tested until near the end of the film. A nearly solid hour was wasted with a tired slave-owner routine that went nowhere.

The ending solidified Earwig and the Witch as a terrible film with a terrible message of the oppressed becoming the oppressor without ever exploring provenance or experiencing freedom.
