For a young filmmaker to write, direct, edit and star in his own film at such a young age with a small budget is an incredible feat. Jadon Cal is a promising talent and filmmaker.
This film has loads of heart and some great performances. I believe the actor who played Brent, David Hamzik, is a future great. Every scene he is in is so alive. You can't take your eyes off him.
You can't help but feel for the main character, Chris, who seems to be living in a deteriorating world. He is losing people to drugs, but his love for skim boarding and protecting his little brother gives him purpose.
The film does a great job settling into itself and transporting you to this little Florida town.

This movie made me tear up and get emotional at least three times all thanks to Jadon's incredible acting chops. There are so many funny lines and hilarious moments throughout the film. The intense moments had me gripping my seat. The cinematography really pulled me into the film with so many beautiful shots and imagery. The subject and themes are all relatable and I connected with so many of the characters and found myself rooting for them. This movie has a beautiful message and reminded me what's important in life. I was so impressed by the acting from the entire cast and I can't wait to see them all in future projects.

Jadon is a good friend of mine and I went to initially support him. Wasn't looking forward to sitting through a cheesy skim boarding film to be honest(which was absolutely not)haha. As a surfer I do respect all water sports and skimming is definitely not easy. I wanted to support Jadon anyway I can. I was very surprised the movie had a deeper meaning to it. It was really good!! Pulled some heart strings and even shed a few tears. Dog town and z boys but skim boarding. The core of the movie was about family and overcoming challenges. Never losing heart and standing up for what's right. I loved it and will be recommending the movie to friends and family. The producers, cast, and crew were all incredible and it was really great meeting everyone at the premiere. Very talented and genuine individuals.
'Off Rip' provides a feeling of nostalgia for old surf films as well as 'better, simpler' days.
For Jadon Cals directorial debut, this is a solid piece of filmmaking filled with heart. You can tell Jadon took 'write what you know' and ran with it. You can feel the specificity of Floridian culture.
As a beach kid myself, growing up on the beaches of California, I related to this film on a whole other level but I don't think you have to be a beach native to relate to the themes of family woven into this film.
If you're looking for a great summer film to watch with your friends after a day at the beach, check out 'Off Rip'

This film is a gritty, heartfelt triumph. Centered on a young skim-boarder carrying the weight of his broken home, the story dives deep into themes of survival, loyalty, and identity. It's raw and emotional, capturing the struggle to become the man his family has always needed.
The lead gives a standout performance-vulnerable, determined, and incredibly real. His connection with the actress playing his mother is powerful and grounding, while the supporting cast brings authenticity and layers that elevate every scene.
The cinematography plays a major role in pushing this film across the finish line. Every shot feels purposeful-capturing both the beauty of the coastline and the weight of the character's world. It draws you in, makes you feel what the characters are feeling, and keeps the emotional current flowing from start to finish.
This team-cast and crew-showed up with heart, vision, and grit. And what they created isn't just a film-it's a story that sticks with you. 10 stars.
