Throughout the first season Eli's aneurysm was described as inoperable or operable only at great risk because it was deep within the brain. Sigouryey Weaver's character said it was a sub-arachnoid aneurysm, meaning it was outside the brain and just under the meninges, a membrane that covers the brain.
