A failed reporter is bonded to an alien entity, one of many symbiotes who have invaded Earth. But the being takes a liking to Earth and decides to protect it.
The filmmakers cite the films of horror directors John Carpenter and David Cronenberg as an influence on the film, as well as the horror comedy films An American Werewolf in London (1981) and Ghostbusters (1984).

During the chase scene, Eddie/Venom turns left up a side street, which is a one-way, as there is a 'do not enter' sign at the bottom of the hill, and it is a one lane street; as Eddie/Venom is seen from behind, going uphill, it is now a two lane street with a double yellow line down the middle, with a traffic sign at the top of the hill facing him.
In its entirety, including the two mid-credits sequences, the closing credits sequence lasts for nineteen minutes.
The theatrical release featured an extended clip from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) as a post-credits scene. It was however not included in the internet version.
