A discontent stay-at-home mother, not to mention hypochondriac and former artist is on the verge of a nervous breakdown, wallowing over how pathetic her life has become while she cares for her beautiful, boisterous baby boy. Hormonal and hysterical with minimal help from her itinerant, patronizing husband, the fire and rage within triggers her metamorphosis into a canine. She was once a girl then a woman, a bride, a parent, but now she has to adapt to being a dog...definitely something you don't see every day. While ever reliable Amy Adams is fiercely committed in the role of a mommy-turned-mongrel, and turns in a blistering performance that explores a broad spectrum of emotions and the doldrums of child-rearing, the dark and satirical aspects of the story aren't congruent with the more serious, rooted-in-reality aspects of the story, and after a promising start it really lets down at the end which tries to tie things up in a nice, sugary little bow that feels so artificial. Despite any of the movie's surrealism, weirdness, and flights of fancy it actually offers some poignant messages about what it truly means to be a mother, but they'd be better served in a different project. **½
