  • Anwar Says: Ayushmann Khurana films are a genre in themselves and this movie is the final say and the best in the league Abhishek Kapur is there to direct. An artist whose debut was as a donor, can take up any script and prove himself. The film is a complete package in itself, at one time entertains you and at the same time addresses a sensitive subject.

Vani Kapur equally shines, by far her best performance. The emotions of a transgender and the bond she carries with her father played by Kanwaljeet and she effortlessly surrenders herself into the character. Ayushmann sisters looked irritating but that's what director wanted from them .

Editing is crisp and movie is wrapped up in one hour 57 minutes. Manoj Lobo's camera cheerfully explore chiseled bodies of both the leads . Sachin - Jigar is back with their foot tapping tunes . Normally a movie on a social taboo is preachy at the end but Abhishek kept it simple, that makes it distinct. A must watch, don't wait till it is released on OTT.

  • Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is a movie that takes a very niche place in Bollywood which has been carved out for a Massy with Message film (aka the Ayushman Khurana Genre). It does that job very well.

The humour, entertainment quotient and drama are all reminiscent of a typical Bollywood drama. But the only thing which makes it unique is its premise. Progressive or not is debatable but this is a necessary film which perhaps noone can deny.

The tone deaf jokes, occasional cringy dialogues and its idea of giving medal for accepting-a-Trans-woman-as-normal attitude might seem odd and unacceptable to few at this age and time.

But it should be minded that this film is being targetted towards a very different audience. This film does the job of igniting the potential to have that conversation among average Joes while also ensuring a level of drawing room comfort. That is something. And for that the writing has to be commended.

In terms of acting both Khurana and Vaani did a good job. Their performances were fun and acceptably charming.

Overall this is a film which can be enjoyed even with its flaws.
  • Finally saw this on Netflix.

The movie has a very strong social message and at the same time it is engrossing in an entertaining way.

It has romance, comedy n sports.

It is more difficult to change human behavior than to influence opinions or attitudes and this movie will definitely influence attitudes towards the transgender/transsexual fellas.

Ayushman Khurana gave a believable performance of that a gym instructor (myself being an instructor) but his statement about pimples on chest due to protein shakes or proteins via meat n eggs is totally unscientific.

People do get pimples due to testosterone shots aka steroids but not cos of proteins.

    Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui review :

Missed this one in theatres last month and finally caught it today on Netflix. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui turned out to be a good timepass fare with both Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor at their best. Director Abhishek Kapoor seems to have regained his mojo post the damp squib Kedarnath (2018).

Ayushmann is the typical Chandigarh ka gabru gym instructor who falls for his tenant and Zumba class trainer Vaani. Physical intimacy follows and Ayushmann formally proposes marriage...but hey, theres a hitch and glitch!!

Vaani is a trans-woman who turned female after a surgery. "Trans lady yaani kya? A girl who likes Trans music" goes the joke but the desi laundaa Ayushmann gets wild when he actually understands the truth!! Both Ayushmann and Vaani are called Manu which leads to another punchline "Matlab Manu ne Manu ki hi le li...". Teehee!!

Khurrana has worked hard on his physique as well as the Haryanvi lingo and is reliably good. It is truly brave of Vaani to take on such a challenging role and emerge the show stealer. Indeed, this is one of the finest performances of her career. She not only looks hot but also delivers a knockout act.

I already published my best films of 2021. Need to add Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui to that list.

    Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

I think what makes this movie different from normal stereotypes, or even Ayushmann's other movies was that it was more for the actress but subjectively, Ayushmann gave all the proper support as and when required. And I would say, Vaani Kapoor did her level best, coming out of those cliche roles and side actress stuff.

But above all, it's the concept and its showcase that was the main feature of this film. If I leave aside the manly drama, the sub urban jokes and the sex, the remaining movie happened to be brilliant. Not that the other stuff wasn't good but no where close to this: the agony and assault that Maanvi/Manu faced in her day today life and how boldly she/he was able to handle those blows. And that was what both emotional and comprehensive. Again, it was just a movie and in real life, things are totally different. And they will remain immature, maybe even 20 years down the line whenever any such matter arise.

    Overall, a good movie.
  • Such a bold attempt for a bollywood movie. It can be called it's ahead of its time. Audience might not digest the concept yet.

    May be educational on parts.

I have seen a lot of bakwaas movie lately, this is definitely not one of them.

I have always liked Abhishek Kapoor as a very good director. Ayushmann Khurana has always been my favorite. He has always tried very different roles. Playing a semen donor and than a gay person on screen in the 2020 film 'Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan' to falling in love with a transgender woman in his latest release 'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui he has come a long way.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui (2021) : Movie Review -

Ayushmann Khurrana is on a dream run. The kind of cinema he is making consistently, puts him in a different league of his own- far away from his contemporaries. Looking at his recent films, nobody can deny that, rather we are getting used to it. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is yet another "Taboo-Breaking Entertainer" in Ayushmann Khurrana Club, a single member club which is established by him, run by him and is being ruled by him and him only. While others are busy making mainstream cinema even more typical, this guy is busy in reforging mainstream cinema by mixing commercial elements with taboo but socially important subjects. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is his Trademark Entertainer! But wait, we have a big surprise, The Vaani Kapoor. Abhishek Kapoor dares to make a love-story which hasn't been made in Bollywood yet and his attempt is definitely watchable, with those expected flaws.

The film is about Manu (Ayushmann Khurrana), a gym owner and a bodybuilder who falls in love with Zumba teacher Maanvi, played by Vaani Kapoor. Everything goes smoothy until one sudden moment when he learns the truth about Maanvi's past which shatters him mentally and physically. The surprise must be enjoyed without any spoilers so let's not reveal anything here. The screenplay is quite engaging and pacy with the entire first half unfolding lots of things within an hour. That leaves second half with no surprises and predictable happy ending but it's pretty a speech-maker and learning experience. The film deals with the topic which may not be accepted today, especially by the family audience but surely after 40-50 years, it will get that deserving appreciation. If the second half had something more to show, this would have been a fantastic affair afterall.

Ayushmann Khurrana is fantastic as Manu. The film shows him in a macho avatar, something he hasn't done before. The female fans are gonna scream out for him. But let's not forget the main reason behind it. He plays that egoistic macho who learns the actual meaning of being a "MARD". That's where he wins the battle by losing one. His companion, Vaani Kapoor is a complete surprise package. You might just think it for a moment that this role was meant to be played by her only. No other actress could have done it better and the way she fearlessly delivers those dialogues will force you think about that never-ending pain, problems and struggle. The supporting cast gets a lot of laughter, to be frank, much more than the leading pair.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui has got a very good music album which is filled with local flavours and romance. That foot-tapping title song appears with the end credits, unfortunately. 'Kheench Te Nach' and 'Tumbe Pe Zumba' are pretty nice situational grooving numbers whereas 'Kalle Kalle' is practically very effective song. The film has got good dialogues too. Some are typical one-liners while some are intelligently hard-hitting, which might leave family audiences feel uncomfortable. Director Abhishek Kapoor tries his hands in some kind of new genre with the brand ambassador of the club Ayushmann and he successfully manages to present the taboo context without any compromises. The film falls flat at some occasions where it couldn't battle out the predictability and few of those typical hindi cinema cliches. But the fact that you can't really go too intellectual while making a commercial cinema saves a lot of bashing. You need to to little bashing where its due. For instance, the family affair, completely unnecessary and over-dramatic. That sister eavesdropping with Stethoscope, seriously? How dumb it looked. Nevertheless, it's a nice attempt by Abhishek Kapoor which will help him to change his image too. He brings us the most surprising love-story of recent times and a new form of progressive cinema. Ayushmann Khurrana and Vaani Kapoor's "Taboo-Breaking Aashiqui" is unmissable for content cinema lovers who have that hunger of watching something new, something really interesting. However, it also tries to be formal audience at the same time, so you might hate that part so prepare yourself for that. Rest, it's enjoyable. Far better than recent 'So Called' good films (after re-opening), content-wise i mean.

    RATING - 6/10*
  • This movie needs to be in global headlines; certainly something I will be able to recommend with immense pride to portray how much capable Hindi cinema is of creating quality content..

Ayushmaan continues to shine; Vaani has so much potential, this movie provides her the platform.. Storyline may be a bit ahead of time for a certain audience group in india..
  • We all love Ayushmann's choice of scripts that strike a balance between catering to mainstream Bollywood sensibilities and conveying subtle, progressive messages. CKA is yet another film that starts in typical rom-com fashion - Manu (Ayushmann), a gym owner and bodybuilder, loves Maanvi (Vaani), a Zumba instructor. But there's a little secret that changes its entire course. It's that Maanvi is a trans woman. When the revelation is made, Manu acts the way most taunting (cis-gender) Indian men would do, but he also uses very harsh language at Maanvi in the process. In real life, for such a couple to reconcile, it would take a lot longer than a single hospital episode. But this is commercial Bollywood, mind you! If it wants quick(er) closure, it'll give you exactly that.

Also, what if Maanvi was not a self-reliant, strong-willed, reasonably wealthy person? Doesn't that lessen some of the most significant hurdles that trans persons face in the form of complex surgeries? These convenient shortcuts are forsaken simply because the intent is appreciable. I also wish the climax was centered around giving closure to Maanvi instead of something that's comparatively less significant. We could also have used some more insight into gender reassignment surgery, especially since the film had the golden opportunity to go there.

One of the few things it wholly gets right is the occasional humor. I thought it would be offensive to a great extent, but thankfully it isn't. Even better that some of it arises from unique situations. While we can easily question why Vaani was chosen to play a trans woman, she gives it her all. For once, it isn't Ayushmann doing all the heavy lifting in an Ayushmann movie. And it was a neat move on the writers' part to show Manu doing all the homework on LGBTQ himself, instead of some doctor spoon-feeding him.
  • 'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui' was a pretty average movie It was also very 'safe'. Not really a good movie on Transgender issues to be honest.

It bypasses most of the 'harder parts 😉' of being a transgender through the surgery.

That surgery that the girl had is still rare and costs crores and by the look of it, the girl's family wasn't that rich. It's not also available everywhere especially in India. You have to travel abroad and that cost has to be taken into consideration.

Also most Trans women don't get the surgery because it's rare, expensive and it has many many risks. So they bypassed the 'meat 😉' of the messaging by basically making her a full on girl rather than an actual currently living realistic trans woman.

You can praise it all you want for the 'social messaging' it brings but I am not here to be a puppet for a 'social protest'. I am judging the movie for what it is and it is BORING.
  • shaikhirshad-4122311 December 2021
Hatts of to the director ABHISHEK KAPOOR who directs this film and making the people aware of this subject which is must important to know. I didn't like vaani kapoor much but after seeing this movie I just wanna say one thing FANTASTIC performance by her and after this film she'll be on fire. Not everyone does and not everyone has the guts to this kind of roles but she did it and it was superb. Ayushman Khurana always rocks with his performance and powerful subjects. Story, screenplay music all are perfectly matched to the concept of the film. If you wanna see something different with powerful social topic go for it....
  • goreeshsood10 December 2021
The had great concept and the way it chooses to represent it was good. The pacing is slow and the film gets boring sometimes. Other than that the acting performances were amazing.
  • shaktoro10 January 2022
Slow, boring and predictable all through. And wooden performance by Vaani Kapoor makes matters worse. A good subject wasted by poor screen play and direction. An avoidable mess.
  • The first half of the movie is super interesting and the premise is very bold and handled quite well. However, the second half makes a joke of everything by throwing in absolute cringe family drama and dumb Bollywood cliches. It seems as if different writers wrote the first and second parts of the movie. Vani Kapoor is unconvincing as the female lead, while Ayushman pulls off the male lead quite well. Only wish Bollywood can be a bit more realistic and grow some balls when it comes to presenting realistic bold content the way it deserves to be presented.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed the movie and of course it had a good message. However, we should have seen more of Maanvi's character's story. I think to create more acceptance for the trans community in India, this movie could've given a bit more context about the journey of Manvi. Just a glimpse into her childhood, her story, what she went through etc. Instead the movie just rushed into Manu's journey of acceptance. That was great, but we needed bit more depth to the film. It's only when people can connect and sympathize with a character can they understand why it's important to be more accepting in real life as many could be facing the same struggle. The story was very predictable and followed a similar pattern of a typical Ayushman Khurana movie. Could've had more depth so there is more empathy and acceptance for the transgender community in India.

However, overall the movie was entertaining and delivered a good message. Loved Vaani and Ayushman and their pairing was fresh and fun to watch.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is a movie about acceptance. It is more than just another Ayushmann movie where he gets involved in something beyond his comprehension. For that matter, it is actually more of a Vaani Kapoor film and that's a good thing (given the subject).

Manvinder Manjal runs a gym in Chandigarh. He aspires to win the title of GOAT (Gabru of all Time) and he trains hard for it. His gym employs Vaani Kapoor's Maanvi to conduct Zumba classes. They fall in love but Manvinder is in for a shock when Maanvi reveals that she is a transwoman.

This is Ayushmann Khurrana's 2nd LGBTQIA+ film after Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. While SMZS was more of a comedy, Chandigarh is more mature in terms of driving home the message of acceptance but at the same time keeping it light & breezy. Vaani Kapoor is the central character here & rightfully so. She essays the role of a transwoman really well. Ayushmann dons the body builder avatar & the accompanying mindset with ease

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui is entertaining & at the same time drives the message home with grace. Definitely, a step towards more progressive mainstream cinema! Abhishek Kapoor delivers yet again with Vaani Kapoor stealing the show.
  • Warning: Spoilers
First of all one needs to applaud Vaani Kapoor for doing this film, not just because of the nature of her role, but because since the beginning of her career, people have made fun of her and called her a woman with the looks of a man. Imagine the state of mind of an actress, who is approached for a role because she looks like a man. Vaani Kapoor needs to be praised for taking up this challenge, knowing very well that the jokes and memes about her will only increase after this decision of hers. The courage that she has shown by taking up this role is truly admirable.

This is Ayushmann Khurrana's first release in almost 18 months, and I am really glad that this break happened in his life, because I believe it has really helped his cause. Ayushmann Khurrana does a number of films on different subjects, but the big problem is that the stories change, his role remains the same in every single film of his. He always plays a young man with an attitude and delivers his dialogues in the same way in every single film. The conclusion that one draws from this is that Ayushmann's acting range is limited, and that's why he just keeps repeating himself. On top of that he keeps doing movies at regular intervals, which can lead to the audience getting bored of you. Ayushmann has a very likeable screen presence, but he must space out his films and try to reinvent himself through every film.

This break really helped, because now we were all looking forward to watching Ayushmann once again, and the actor himself has worked hard to present himself in a fresh new avatar. A fantastic step taken by the writers and director is that they have used Ayushmann as a representation of every single person in our country. When the truth unfolds itself in front of Manvinder, he reacts like most individuals would. The director is showing us through Ayushmann, everything that he says, everything that he does, the entire range of emotions that he goes through, from anger to confusion, from love to hatred, and ultimately the realization, all of that would happen to any person across the world. We see ourselves in him. Needless to say, Ayushmann has done a fantastic job in the film. His confident portrayal of Manvinder adds a lot of excitement to every single scene that he's in.

The music of the film is fantastic, it's something that very rarely happens in a Bollywood film, but it has happened this time thanks to Sachin Sanghvi and Jigar Saraiya, better known as Sachin - Jigar. The song 'Kheech Te Nach' is an outstanding song that is bound to raise your excitement levels and get you moving. The choreography on 'Kheech Te Nach' compliments the song and the situation in the film perfectly.

A key criticism of the film is that why wasn't an actual transgender woman taken up for the movie, which in my opinion does not make sense, simply because if you are making a film on cricket, you don't really go out looking for a cricketer, if your scene requires you to drink alcohol you don't really start drinking alcohol or pick up a heavy drinker. An actor portrays the role that he or she gets to the best of his/her abilities, that's what acting is all about.

Finally we need to talk about Vaani Kapoor, an actress who has been around for quite some time but hadn't been offered even a single good role or an author backed role until this film. Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui gave her the toughest role of her career and she has nailed it perfectly. The scene in which she breaks down in front of Ayushmann, feels extremely natural, the emotions displayed in that moment seem very real. In that scene, Vaani has perfectly portrayed the state of mind of a girl who is watching her dreams getting shattered in front of her eyes. Not once does she come across as weak actress, and you end up surprised wondering as to why she hasn't been offered good quality roles in her career. Writers, Producers and Directors need to realize that there is much more to Vaani than the memes that get made on her. Some people have criticized the love scenes for being too intense and the glamorous avatar of Vaani Kapoor in the film, which is plain stupid. There is a reason why there are such scenes in the film, you will understand when you get a grip of the subject matter of the film. Also, Vaani Kapoor looks extremely sexy in the film, you just can't take your eyes off her and I don't see how that is wrong. Vaani Kapoor is a gorgeous woman and there is nothing wrong in the way she has been presented in the film.

The screenplay of the film follows a very predictable route but entertains you throughout and gets you emotional towards the end. Unless you picked up the twist in the trailer itself, the reveal would definitely shock you, simply because something like this has never been done before in India. Kudos to the writers and director for picking up very unique subject for their film, and creating a very enjoyable film revolving around it. Of course the movie has some shortcomings, but the more important thing is the message that it carries, acceptance of each and every human being the way they are.

    Warning: Spoilers
An Indian Hindi movie carrying an exceptional social message. We are all human beings irrespective of our sexual orientation. A film about equality and a strong message from the LGBQT community. Spread love not hatred. Exceptional job done by the actors . Let's move forward and remember this is 2022 and we re all equals . Kudos to Hindi cinema for tacking on a so called taboo topic!!!
  • Manu (Ayushman Khurana) meets Maanvi (Vaani Kapoor) at his gym, where the latter joins as a Zumba instructor. Initially reluctant about allowing the gym to be used for the purpose of dance, Manu agrees to allow the diversification as Maanvi makes the gym popular and rakes in money. Then, sparks fly, and he falls in love with her. Maanvi is hesitant to commit as she is still nursing the pain and rejection from her last relationship that left her with a scar - and she is much aware that even this one will go the same way, as she is a transgender. Maanvi was born a male child, but all along felt like a girl; she has endured it all, fighting her family and the society and has gone the whole nine yards to go through the sex change. The inevitable does happen, and as soon as Maanvi gets an opportunity to tell Manu about her truth, the wonderful romance comes to a crashing halt. Manu is unable to come to terms with this startling revelation and accuses Maanvi of deception for sexual gratification. Horrified, Maanvi sees her experience repeating itself as the stigma around her choice refuses to pardon her.

"Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui" is live wire, vivid and graphic in all departments whether it's the no holds barred love or the violent emotional outbursts when the truth emerges. The social reaction is perverse and uncouth, but then given the fact that the subject of transgender is so nouveau in India that perhaps what director Abhishek Kapoor has portrayed is natural. He has also probably assumed an easy way out of the deadlock with an ending that pleases everyone, but through the acceptance he has passed a strong message about the subject and the society's way forward to allow individuals to exercise their choices. This is what films were originally meant to do: spread awareness and ignite social transformation for the better, and "Chandigarh....." ticks all the boxes in this regard. Vaani Kapoor is svelte and fashionable, and she gives an edgy performance swinging between happiness and despair. Her dialogues are well crafted, sharp, and incisive. Ayushman Khurana relives his role in "Dum Laga Ke Haisha" with complete elan - his reaction to the truth is abhorrent but very naturally executed. The music and cinematography are par excellence. If you're wondering why, even after all this, I am rating it the way I have, then my submission is that the film makes for a commercial, easy and populist ending and not a credible one. However, it does pave the way for broaching a subject considered taboo and may be considered path breaking, flagging off a much needed change.
  • When you are making a movie on such a sensitive issue, you have to go all in. Unfortunately CKA fails to do that, it only revolves around the topic but does not go to the core of it.

Another issue with this movie was the lead actress. Vaani plays a trans woman and she fails miserably. The character needed a very strong acting base and Vaani Kapoor falters in those few powerful scenes.

    Warning: Spoilers
Finally a Hindi movie i can really enjoy watching in cinema after pandemic reopening.

Light-hearted and heartwarming drama about transgender romance. Director Abhishek Kapoor in his simplistic three-act structure, managed to purify such sensitive content into basic understanding of love itself.

Despite some unnecessary travesty moments of supporting characters, both leading stars Ayushmann & Vaani truly gave solid performances to stated that 'Normal is just a perspective'.

While it was kinda expected from the great actor, the upcoming actress unexpectedly kept her emotions well when needed.
  • Chandigarh kare ashiqui is worth your money and time, unlike the recent garbage churned out by Bollywood this movie won't bore you with cheesy one liners or usual romantic troupes. Instead it will start as a light hearted romanctic comedy and end with a feel good movie with a solid message behind.
  • Sometime back Ayushman Khurana did a movie with Yami Gautam where her character rejects him because he is bald. People went bonkers over it saying it's her choice to reject someone over looks.

And here peeps find his initial hitch and reservations over a trans person as regressive? So if someone isn't comfortable being with a trans person makes them regressive and orthodox. This woke BS is being shoved down the viewer's throats by Bollywood and OTT. Glad this rubbish flopped.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Wow a cisgender male Punjabi munda "accepts" a "trans girl". Let's give him a medal. Extremely problematic and normalising abuse by cisgender males towards transgender women. Also casting a cisgender woman to play the role of a transwomen? Bollywood do better. To be fair, even a inanimate mannequin might have been able to evoke more expression on its face than the extreme botox afflicted Vani Kapoor. Transwomen are not "mistakes" and deserve the same respect and rights as cisgender persons.
