Before filming on Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic Rebel Moon had even wrapped, the Netflix streaming service had already secured a tax credit for the follow-up Rebel Moon: Part 2. It was recently announced that the first installment in this two-film epic will be released on December 22nd – and during a recent interview with Variety, a Netflix executive discussed having the confidence to let Snyder dive into making Rebel Moon: Part 2 long before anyone has a chance to see the first movie.

Ori Marmur, who runs Netflix’s original studio film group with Kira Goldberg, said that Netflix believes in Rebel Moon because “Zack came in with so much passion. This is a film that he’s had in mind for decades. As you know, he’s spent so much time working on other people’s IP at other studios. We worked with him on Army of the Dead and we

Meanwhile, the Wick-verse will expand to the small screen with "The Continental," an upcoming TV series that follows the titular hotel's slippery owner Winston during his younger days back in the 1970s. Spin-off movies can be pretty hit or miss, with some feeling like a cheap cash grab while others sincerely expand an already beloved universe. Fortunately, everything we've learned so far regarding the "John Wick" spin-off starring Ana de Armas, "Ballerina," seems to point toward the latter. As was reported today by Collider, Lionsgate has closed a deal with franchise stars Keanu Reeves and Ian McShane to reprise their roles as the titular hitman and Winston, the manager of the Continental Hotel. Production on the film begins on Monday in Prague, with "Underworld" series and "Live Free or Die Hard" director Len Wiseman at the helm, working off a script by Shay Hatten with punch-ups from "Killing Eve" and "Promising Young Woman" scribe, Emerald Fennell.

The film is being produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and "John Wick" creator Chad Stahelski, with Brady Fujikawa and Chelsea Kujawa overseeing the project for Lionsgate.

Army of the Dead might have left the door open for a seemingly dead character to return. Zack Snyder's Netflix zombie movie Army of the Dead introduces a mercenary crew on a mission to steal 100 million from a vault in Las Vegas after the city has become a zombie-filled wasteland. Emmanuel made her television acting debut in 2006, starring as Sasha Valentine in the soap opera Hollyoaks. She starred on the series until 2010 with her character’s plotlines including heavy issues such as prostitution and heroin addiction. This was soon followed up by the role of Missandei in HBO’s Game of Thrones.

The British actress notched an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Actress In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series in Die Hart, opposite Kevin Hart and John Travolta.

In "Army of Thieves," Nathalie Emmanuel played a jewel thief in a zombie-adjacent world, but in "The Invitation," she's no longer content to be carrying out heists on the sidelines while monsters run amok elsewhere. "The Invitation" puts her right down in the thick of things with a "sexy aristocrat" in the countryside, per the official synopsis. The familiar "Dracula" setup betrays the film's not-so-secret vampire recipe, which is further bolstered by the appearance of fangs and blood-drinking and the name-dropping of Bram Stoker characters in the trailer for "The Invitation."

“Escape From Kabul Airport,” a documentary airing on BBC Two in September, will tell the inside story of the 18 days in August 2021, when the U.S. withdrew its troops from Afghanistan, and the subsequent evacuation of thousands of Afghan citizens from Kabul airport after the Taliban seized the city.

The documentary is an Amos production for the BBC, in association with HBO and in collaboration with Arte France. It is produced by Emmy and BAFTA-winning Dan Reed (“Leaving Neverland”) and directed by Jamie Roberts (“Four Hours At The Capitol”).

The film combines never before seen on-the-ground archival footage from the evacuation, alongside interviews with evacuees, eye-witnesses, U.S. Marines and Taliban fighters.

Roberts said: “When the images of the chaotic Kabul airlift flashed across the news I immediately wanted to know more about what this historic moment looked and felt like on the ground, through the eyes of the people who were there.

As soon as it was announced that Zack Snyder would be directing a sci-fi epic called Rebel Moon for the Netflix streaming service, Snyder made it clear that they were hoping this would be a franchise-starter. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted Rebel Moon to be “a massive IP and a universe that can be built out”… and even though the first Rebel Moon only started filming a few months ago, Netflix has already secured California tax credits for a sequel. Which they’re currently calling Rebel Moon: Part 2.

The California Film Commission announced their latest round of credit allocations this morning, and Variety reports that Netflix was given 37.1 million worth of tax credits – which is 40 of the total that were given out. 16.6 million of that will be going toward the production of Rebel Moon: Part 2. The new Russo Brothers movie stars Ryan Gosling as the shadowy agent of the title, who gets involved in a job gone wrong and soon finds himself being hunted by Chris Evans as a mustachioed psychopath. There’s some truly harrowing spy-versus-spy action and some nice emotional beats as well. It’s so satisfying, in fact, that it might leave you hankering for some more action movies you can only find on Netflix.

Oscar-winning composer Hans Zimmer admits he’s been up and working since 3 a.m. when he calls Variety from London. With his work ethic, it’s no surprise — he’s currently in the middle of his European tour, and still found time this past year to pen scores for “Dune,” HBO’s “The Survivor,” “No Time to Die,” “Army of Thieves,” “Top Gun: Maverick” and Apple TV+’s “Prehistoric Planet.”

For the natural history series “Prehistoric Planet,” Zimmer collaborated with collective Bleeding Fingers Music and co-composers Anže Rozman and Kara Talve says the key was finding music that resonated today.

Exclusive: As competition grows among studios and streamers for a bigger foothold in the fertile UK production landscape, Disney is planting a flag in the sand by hiring its first casting executive in the territory.

In 2019, Disney inked a long-term lease for the majority of Pinewood Studios and in recent years has made a host of movies and series in the UK including Snow White, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Cruella, Indiana Jones 5, Willow, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor and a number of of Marvel titles. Most of these productions feature British cast in prominent and supporting roles.

Thus, London-based casting agent Kate Ringsell has joined the House Of Mouse in a permanent role as Vice President, Casting, Walt Disney Studios, 20th Century, Searchlight.

Exclusive: Matthias Schweighöfer is set to join the cast of Christopher Nolan’s next film Oppenheimer. The A-list ensemble already includes Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh and Cillian Murphy, the latter set to star in the title role as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who ran the Manhattan Project that led to the invention of the atomic bomb.

The film will bow on July 21, 2023, a slot typically saved for Nolan films in the past. It’s also roughly two weeks before the anniversary of the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima.

Details behind who Schweighöfer will be playing are unknown at this time. Universal had no comment.

Exclusive: Oscar nominee and Tony winner winning Sophie Okonedo, Matthias Schweighöfer, Jing Lusi and Paul Ready have joined the international thriller Heart of Stone starring Gal Gadot, Jamie Dornan and Alia Bhatt for Netflix and Skydance.

Tom Harper is directing the pic from a script by Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder. Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Don Granger are producing, along with Mockingbird’s Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn and Pilot Wave’s Gadot and Jaron Varsano. Harper, Rucka and Patty Whitcher are exec producing.

Plot details are being kept under wraps. The project has been a high priority for Netflix following its competitive auction victory for the project in January 2021. Skydance had packaged the property and taken it to the market, with several suitors vying for rights.

The newly reestablished Hammer Studios has acquired U.K. rights for B Good Picture Company’s “Doctor Jekyll.”

In Nov. 2021, the U.K.’s Network Distributing sealed a deal with iconic British horror label Hammer Films to form Hammer Studios Ltd. “Doctor Jekyll,” directed by Joe Stephenson and currently shooting in the U.K., will be the first film to be released by the newly formed studio.

Netflix reported 8.3m global paid subscriber gains in the fourth quarter of 2021, slightly behind its forecast of 8.5m, as member levels in Europe, the Middle East and Africa continued to catch up with the US and Canada.

The Emea region added 3.5m paid members which, while lower than 4.46m in the year-ago period, boosted the subscriber level there to 74.04m and record quarterly revenue exceeded $2.5bn for the first time.

Never one to do things in small measures, Zack Snyder developed his zombie movie "Army of the Dead" to launch a shared universe featuring spinoffs, sequels, and prequels. The first such addition to the franchise, this past October's "Army of Thieves," revealed what the oddball safe-cracker Ludwig Dieter got up to before joining a crack team of mercenaries to break into a legendary vault stuck in the middle of zombie-overrun Las Vegas in "Army of the Dead." Snyder is also planning to make a sequel movie — titled "Planet of the Dead" — that may yet include a spot for Dieter in its story.

Netflix had a good week at the virtual box office from November 1 to 7, taking the overall streaming crown with marquee feature film The Harder They Fall.

Nielsen said the film racked up almost 1.2 billion minutes of streaming views. That was well ahead of any other series or film, as two-time champ You faded to the No. 2 spot at 994 million minutes of viewing and other shows also lost steam.

Two other original films performed well for Netflix. Army of Thieves, a prequel to Zack Snyder’s zombie action outing Army of the Dead, collected 456 million viewing minutes. Love Hard, a dating comedy starring Nina Dobrev, scooped up 455 million. Along with Harder, they helped Netflix take the top three spots on Nielsen’s movie-centric chart.

Nielsen measures only viewing via a TV set, leaving aside mobile, delivering numbers from Disney+, Hulu, Apple TV+, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video after a month’s delay.

Netflix has launched top 10 lists reporting its most popular films and shows around the world based on its new metric measuring hours viewed.

Starting today (November 16) the metric on Top10.netflix replaces the streamer’s previous measurement which recorded the number of accounts that watched at least two minutes of a piece of content in its first 28 days on the platform.

That system was frequently criticised for failing to reveal a meaningful picture of viewership, cherry picking highlights and not reporting who watched shows in their entirety.

With the release of Army of the Dead, Netflix gave us a fun zombie film that was pretty throw away but promised more. One character that stole the movie though was Ludgwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighofer) so it’s only fair that a prequel, Army of Thieves, would focus on the safe cracking hero.

Living a boring life in Germany, we discover how Dieter became the legendary safe cracker he did. We also meet the titular Army of Thieves who worked with him to pull off some of the biggest European heists, before his sights were set on the zombie infested Las Vegas bank job.

Where Army of the Dead was more about non-stop high-action zombie battles, in Army of Thieves they are little more than anxiety nightmares and perhaps premonitions for Dieter.

"Army of Thieves," Matthias Schweighöfer's European heist movie prequel to Zack Snyder's "Army of the Dead," is now streaming on Netflix, and it's not a tremendous spoiler to say that, other than a glimpse of news footage and one dream sequence, there are no real zombies in it. After premiering on Netflix in May, Zack Snyder’s zombie heist movie “Army of the Dead” was quickly reanimated for the prequel treatment. Just five months later, “Army of Thieves,” which has perhaps the fastest turnaround ever for a follow-up film, expands the world by exploring the backstory of quirky safecracker Ludwig Dieter, played by actor and director Matthias Schweighöfer.

“Army of the Dead” smashed together the zombie, action and heist genres to huge success; Netflix reported a substantial 75 million member households watched the film in its first 28 days. Starring Schweighöfer, Dave Bautista, Ana de la Reguera, Omari Hardwick, Tig Notaro and more, the ensemble cast is hired by a mysterious billionaire named Bly Tanaka (Hiroyuki Sanada) to break into a Las Vegas casino and rob a vault in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.

Unsurprisingly, many of the characters met their zombie-bitten doom by the time the credits rolled.

Yes, there are a few undead creatures shambling around the claustrophobic hallways of Ludwig Dieter’s (Matthias Schweighöfer) nightmares and on European newscasts showing the horrific outbreak in Las Vegas, but the movie’s not really interested in what’s happening across the Atlantic. Army of Thieves is the second installment in the Army of the Dead franchise, acting as a prequel centered around the German locksmith that opened the safe in the original film, Ludwig Deiter. The prequel takes place just as the zombie apocalypse is breaking out, though the zombie menace plays little role in the film itself.

Audiences know from the ending of the first film, however, that the zombies are destined to spread beyond the walls surrounding Las Vegas. When the zombie apocalypse inevitably reaches the characters from Army of the Dead, one has to wonder how each will fare in the rotting world.

Coming less than a year after its predecessor, Army of Thieves is a prequel to Zack Snyder’s recent Netflix hit zombie movie, Army of the Dead. But Thieves is not an action-horror hybrid like that earlier movie, which was directed and co-written by Snyder. Instead Thieves is a heist thriller and set in the early days of Dead’s zombie pandemic. Hence the new film focuses on one character we met in the previous film and what he was up to before the zombies struck: Ludwig Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer), the savant-like safecracker hired in Dead to break open a vault at the center of that film’s storyline.

Though Army of the Dead was a bloody horror-action movie, Army of Thieves shares more in common with stylish heist movies. It will no doubt put fans in the mood for a similar fun crime story and there are plenty of funny, exciting, and wild heist movies fans of Army of Thieves can check out.

Earlier in 2021, Zack Snyder's heist thriller during a zombie invasion, Army of the Dead, proved to be a big hit for Netflix. This time around, the story centers on Ludwig Dieter, the safecracker who arguably stole the show in the first film. As a fan favorite, audiences were intrigued to see how his first few jobs went and to find out if he connected with these characters as much as he did with those from Army of the Dead. Although these people are robbing banks, many of them were really likable.

Matthias Schweighöfer returns to his fan-favorite role as Ludwig Dieter (Spoiler Alert: Not his real name) and he also directs the prequel to “Army of the Dead” known as “Army of Thieves.” This is more of an exciting heist thriller with a wink to the zombie apocalypse that is currently raging in the background.

As with most movies in this genre, there are plenty of characters on both sides of the law for fans to cheer for and cheer against. In some cases, the movie creates fun and memorable characters worth following while some of the other characters in Army of Thieves don't leave as big of an impression on the audience.

First things first: This iteration of Dieter is a bit different than the one German actor and director Schweighöfer presented in Snyder’s film. He’s still a natty dresser, a chatty conversationalist, and a damn good safecracker, but “Army of Thieves” picks up just before he turned those skills toward a life of crime. Oh, and his name is actually Sebastian, another twist that Snyder and Shay Hatten’s screenplay happily explains away over its protracted 127-minute running time.

The zombie apocalypse is in its infancy, glimpsed only in news reports from far-off Nevada in Netflix’s prequel to Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead. One of the most amusing characters of that trashtastic Las Vegas blood feast was German safecracker Ludwig Dieter, played by Matthias Schweighöfer with a mix of smart-alecky skill and squealing skittishness that frequently prompted the question “Gay or European?” The answer is provided in a shy romantic thread in Army of Thieves, which brings back Schweighöfer, this time as both director and star in a heist adventure tackling three of the most impenetrable vaults ever built.
