Zack Snyder made his name with his gruesome, much more action-y remake of George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead in 2004. The director then tried to line up an even bigger sequel called Army of the Dead for years, but there were many detours along the way, including his eventual role as the chief architect of the early Dceu. He finally returned to his long-lost zombie sequel in 2021, this time as the launching point of a whole new cinematic universe for Netflix, which also included a crime thriller prequel called Army of Thieves and even an animated series about the initial outbreak in Las Vegas.
There was also talk of a direct sequel to Army of the Dead, which left no shortage of mysteries left to answer in a part two. Were Dave Bautista’s Scott Ward and his team of mercenaries in a time loop all along? What...

Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire (read our review Here), the first part of director Zack Snyder’s two-part sci-fi epic, has been available to watch on the Netflix streaming service for over a month, and now we’re getting ready for the April 19th release of the follow-up Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver. With its release date just two months away, Rebel Moon Part Two has received its official rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board: PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, brief strong language and suicide. Also earning a PG-13 rating this week is the Blumhouse horror film Imaginary, which reaches theatres on March 8th. Imaginary got its PG-13 for some violent content, drug material and language.
Neither one of these ratings comes as a surprise. Many Blumhouse movies, from Insidious to Five Nights at Freddy’s, M3GAN, and Night Swim have PG-13 ratings. As for Rebel Moon,...

Yesterday, we shared some quotes from director Zack Snyder and co-writer Kurt Johnstad where they gave some information on what will be seen in the extended cut of Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire (read our review of the PG-13 cut Here), which will be released through the Netflix streaming service sometime after Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver reaches the service on April 19th. Speaking of Rebel Moon: Part Two, Johnstad also told The Hollywood Reporter what can be expected from that film: “a nonstop action rollercoaster ride of twists and turns.”
When asked how the second half of the story compares to the first, the co-writer answered, “I would say that it’s definitely its own movie, and it’s a very different movie. It’s not an assembly of the team. The team is built, and now it’s why they fight. I think [the PG-13 cut] is two hours,...

Over a decade in the making, Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is the new sci-fi space opera from co-writer/director Zack Snyder. Raised on Star Wars and Akira Kurosawa films, Snyder created the story for the film as a pitch to be a new installment of the Star Wars universe. After that pitch never materialized, Snyder eventually set the film with Netflix after the start of his latest franchise play, Army of the Dead, and its spinoff prequel, Army of Thieves.
Any fan of Snyder’s listed influences for the film would not be surprised by the main plot of the story as it mirrors them almost completely. When a peaceful settlement on the edge of a distant moon finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival.

Zack Snyder seems to have fully embraced the Netflix model. After dealing with nothing but WB drama regarding the release of “Justice League,” the filmmaker has found a creative partnership with Netflix which allows him to create just about anything he wants. A zombie war movie? Here’s “Army of the Dead.” A spinoff of said zombie movie? Have “Army of Thieves.” Now, it appears Netflix is ready to release Snyder’s “Star Wars” idea that got pushed to the wayside years ago, titled “Rebel Moon.” Now, split into two parts, “Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire” is set to arrive next month.

Zack Snyder's sci-fi film "Rebel Moon: Part One -- A Child of Fire" -- to cite its full title -- is due for release on December 15, 2023, and, like all of Snyder's films, promises to be visually complex and cinematically overblown. Snyder loves a certain kind of hazy photography as well as bold, brassy characters, usually living within an action-packed milieu that allows them to deliver profound-sounding platitudes in bedroom-voiced monologues while slashing people open in slow-motion. "Rebel Moon" will be a sci-fi riff on the "Seven Samurai" story, with a distant-future agrarian moon standing in for a beleaguered 16th-century Japanese village, and an encroaching Empire-like army standing in for Kurosawa's itinerant bandits. Sofia Boutella will play a character who travels the galaxy to gather up a ragtag group of failed warriors to protect her moon from almost-assured destruction.

For a while, Zack Snyder was building a cinematic universe for the Netflix streaming service that centered on his zombie movie Army of the Dead. The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his upcoming Netflix sci-fi film Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (and its follow-up Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver). So Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas sits unfinished… and during an interview with Total Film magazine, Snyder revealed that Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon aren’t entirely separate. In fact, if Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas ever gets completed, we’ll be seeing a Rebel Moon crossover on the show!

Zack Snyder’s 2021 zombie movie Army of the Dead was supposed to spawn an animated series titled “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas,” you may recall, but it’s been a while since we’ve heard a peep about that project. In a new interview with Total Film that went up today, Snyder suggests that the planned animated series is no longer moving forward at Netflix.
Additionally, Snyder tells Total Film that “Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas” would’ve revealed that the franchise takes place in the same universe as Snyder’s upcoming Rebel Moon.
“Army of the Dead has a pretty vast mythology that never made it into the movie,” Snyder explains. “There’s actually a character from Rebel Moon in the Army of the Dead animated series that we never did.”

If you’re going to make a music biopic — and with new dramatic takes on the lives of Bob Dylan, Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson on the way, it appears everyone is — you’d better secure the music rights. Making a movie purporting to tell the story of a pop music legend without first clearing rights to use the pop music that made them legendary is a recipe for box office disaster.
Remember Stardust, Gabriel Range’s 2020 David Bowie biopic starring Johnny Flynn, shot without any music from Bowie? Or Jimi: All Is By My Side (2013) directed by John Ridley with André 3000 as Jimi Hendrix playing none of his original songs? How about England Is Mine, Mark Gill’s unauthorized Morrissey biopic with Jack Lowden and Jodie Comer? Probably not. Without the sing-alone tunes, those films sank without a trace.

Director Zack Snyder revealed months ago that there will be two cuts of the movies in his upcoming two-part sci-fi epic, Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire, which will be released through the Netflix streaming service on December 22nd and Rebel Moon Part Two: The Scargiver, which will reach Netflix on April 19, 2024. One cut will be something “anyone can enjoy and watch”, while the director’s cut will be a more explicit version that will allow fans to take “a deeper, harder dive” into the material. He has even said that the director’s cut of Rebel Moon Part One: A Child of Fire has “close to an hour of extra content”… and now Netflix’s Tudum site has posted the runtime for the regular cut of the film. It’s 2 hours and 13 minutes. So it looks like the director’s cut will boost it up to around the 3 hour mark.

When Is The Netflix Animated Series Twilight Of The Gods Coming? Well, Zack Snyder, the renowned filmmaker, is embarking on another exciting collaboration with Netflix through the animated series “Twilight of the Gods,” which draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of Norse mythology.
Following his directorial work on “Army of the Dead” and his role as a producer for “Army of Thieves,” Snyder’s creative journey at Netflix expands further with projects like “Rebel Moon” and the collaborative effort with Jay Oliva, “Twilight of the Gods.”
While initial discussions about this venture surfaced in 2019, the official confirmation from Netflix arrived in June 2021, solidifying the anticipation around the project. Notably, this marks a return to animation for Snyder, his first since his involvement in “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.”

Heart of Stone presents a whirlwind of action and suspense but the film stumbles when it comes to its handling of gender roles, resulting in a script that leans heavily on clichés. Heart of Stone is the latest in a long line of exclusive Netflix releases which sees the streaming giant reunite with writer Greg Rucka who penned the well-regarded hit The Old Guard as well as Gal Gadot and Matthias Schweighofer both of whom had solid success with Netflix projects ranging from Red Notice to Army of Thieves. This movie seemingly has all the elements in place for a strong foundation for high-concept spy action fun, but in execution, Heart of Stone also has the life and energy of a stone.

Netflix clearly is determined to play the major-studio game of big, star-driven action franchises. Extraction, its current sequel, another Russo Brothers’ franchise The Gray Man (with the promise of more), Red Notice and many others represent big-screen-type entertainment designed ultimately for people to watch on their couches at home.
This kind of stuff, while skillfully and expensively executed, still works best at Imax rather than your living room, but the streamer is convinced that it will goose subscriptions, so expect more of movies like Heart of Stone, a convoluted spy thriller loaded with James Bond-style action set pieces but with a wonder woman in the name of Gal Gadot in the center of it all. Taking a cue from Charlize Theron’s Netflix franchise The Old Guard, this is a female-driven enterprise where the men, namely Jamie Dornan’s complicated bad guy, take a back seat for the most part.

Eddie Izzard stars in the upcoming Doctor Jekyll from Hammer Studios, and our friends over at Fangoria have shared brand new official poster art with us this morning.
The poster comes courtesy of Creepy Duck Design, and you’ll find it down below.
Director Joe Stephenson recently told Fangoria, “There’ve been over 100 cinematic adaptations of Stevenson’s novella, but there has never been a trans Dr. Jekyll. There seem to be some assumptions that because Nina is a trans character, we are somehow going to make it about gender. That is not the case; the themes of our film are true to the original work.”
Emmy winner Eddie Izzard stars as Dr. Nina Jekyll in the Hammer Studios/B Good Picture Company feature film Doctor Jekyll, a modern interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s iconic novella The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. Scott Chambers co-stars, with Lindsay Duncan,...

Zack Snyder showed off a new peek at Rebel Moon, his space feature due out from Netflix at the end of the year. In a behind-the-scenes featurette revealed during Netflix’s Tudum convention, Snyder pulled back the curtain on his movie, which is set on a distant planet, whose inhabitants must fight back against the armies of a tyrant who would take their resources.
It stars Sofia Boutella as Kora, a mysterious woman who will help organize the peaceful inhabitants of this planet to fight back against an authoritarian government. Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Staz Nair, Michiel Huisman, Charlie Hunnam, E. Duffy and Djimon Hounsou star.
Snyder spent much of the previous decade working on DC projects such as Man of Steel and Justice League. He has since decamped to Netflix, where he already directed Army of the Dead and is plotting spinoffs, including Army of Thieves, which he produced...

Zack Snyder’s zombie movie Army of the Dead spawned the Netflix spinoff movie Army of Thieves in 2021, but what about an actual sequel? Last we heard, Planet of the Dead will be Snyder’s official sequel to Army of the Dead, and Snyder provides an update this week.
The basic gist? Snyder is currently hard at work on another Netflix property, his sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, which is taking up the bulk of his time. Planet of the Dead will have to wait.
“As far as the Army Universe goes, it’s still alive and well in my mind,” Snyder tells The Nerd Queens. “I know exactly what I would do. It really depends on how we try to figure out how we go forward with Rebel Moon and the Rebel Moon Universe. It’s not a small-time commitment. A sci-fi thing at this scale does require a lot...

A few years ago, Zack Snyder started building the Army of the Dead franchise at the Netflix streaming service. His zombie movie Army of the Dead was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves. An animated series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works, and Snyder himself was expected to direct the Army of the Dead sequel Planet of the Dead. He was developing the Planet of the Dead script with Shay Hatten, who co-wrote the first film with him… But we haven’t heard anything more about that project in a while, because Snyder has shifted his focus to building another franchise at Netflix. The sci-fi franchise Rebel Moon. Now, in an interview with The Nerd Queens (as reported by Collider), Snyder has confirmed that Planet of the Dead will have to wait until after they know exactly where the Rebel Moon franchise is going.

Before filming on Zack Snyder’s sci-fi epic Rebel Moon had even wrapped, the Netflix streaming service had already secured a tax credit for the follow-up Rebel Moon: Part 2. It was recently announced that the first installment in this two-film epic will be released on December 22nd – and during a recent interview with Variety, a Netflix executive discussed having the confidence to let Snyder dive into making Rebel Moon: Part 2 long before anyone has a chance to see the first movie.
Ori Marmur, who runs Netflix’s original studio film group with Kira Goldberg, said that Netflix believes in Rebel Moon because “Zack came in with so much passion. This is a film that he’s had in mind for decades. As you know, he’s spent so much time working on other people’s IP at other studios. We worked with him on Army of the Dead and we...

He can be controversial. Not really for anything he has done, but if you mention the name Zack Snyder, you’re not sure how fans will react. We’ll have to see how they react to Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon. Some hated his take on the DC Universe. Others loved it, and the voices were so loud that Warner Bros. had no choice but to finish and release the SnyderCut finally. Many have applauded his update to the Romero classic Dawn Of The Dead. Purists hate that the zombies run in the film. Comic fans love his adaptation of Watchmen. Fanboys deride the film as something that should never have been made.
No matter what, most fans have some sort of opinion of Zack Snyder. Love him or hate him, his films make a lot of money. So, of course, that means that studios love him. After he left the Dceu,...

Who could've predicted a humble B-movie about a retired assassin seeking revenge for the death of his puppy would birth one of the hottest franchises in Hollywood?
Over three films and many, many creative kills (though it's hard to top "death by library book"), the "John Wick" series has given us some of the best onscreen hand-to-hand combat and world-building in recent memory. The man they call Baba Yaga will continue his quest proper in "John Wick: Chapter 4," a sequel that promises to wear its Samurai movie influences on its sleeve. Meanwhile, the Wick-verse will expand to the small screen with "The Continental," an upcoming TV series that follows the titular hotel's slippery owner Winston during his younger days back in the 1970s. And that's not the only off-shoot that's actively moving forward.
Development is now underway on "Ballerina," a spin-off film inspired by the scene in "John Wick: Chapter 3...

Spin-off movies can be pretty hit or miss, with some feeling like a cheap cash grab while others sincerely expand an already beloved universe. Fortunately, everything we've learned so far regarding the "John Wick" spin-off starring Ana de Armas, "Ballerina," seems to point toward the latter. As was reported today by Collider, Lionsgate has closed a deal with franchise stars Keanu Reeves and Ian McShane to reprise their roles as the titular hitman and Winston, the manager of the Continental Hotel. Production on the film begins on Monday in Prague, with "Underworld" series and "Live Free or Die Hard" director Len Wiseman at the helm, working off a script by Shay Hatten with punch-ups from "Killing Eve" and "Promising Young Woman" scribe, Emerald Fennell.
The film is being produced by Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, and "John Wick" creator Chad Stahelski, with Brady Fujikawa and Chelsea Kujawa overseeing the project for Lionsgate.

Netflix’s shake-up of its European operations — which saw the Sept. 29 exit of International Film VP David Kosse, a new role for Spanish executive Teresa Moneo and a new regionalized hub for all content across Europe, the Middle East and Africa (Emea) run by Larry Tanz — points to a broader strategic shift at the streaming giant toward faster-growing international markets to make up for domestic subscriber losses.
In the second quarter of this year, according to figures from UK-based data research group Ampere Analysis, Netflix ordered 97 new original first-run TV series or movies from outside the US, compared to 63 US commissions over the same period. International commissions at Netflix have outpaced domestic orders for seven straight quarters and show no signs of slowing down. Netflix is really keen on developing the next big James Bond/ Mission: Impossible-style franchise. The Grey Man apparently did pretty big business, as did Red Notice and Extraction, and now the streamer is again stepping into the espionage game with Heart of Stone. The film stars Gal Gadot as secret agent Rachel Stone, who, according to the official synopsis, “is the only woman who stands between her powerful, global, peace-keeping organization and the loss of its most valuable — and dangerous — asset.”
During their Tudum event, Netflix released a teaser/sizzle reel for the film, which is being directed by Wild Rose/ The Aeronauts director Tom Harper. Jessica M. Thompson’s supernatural horror film opened with 7 million, which was enough to top a quiet weekend at the box office, but a win is a win, especially for a 10 million-budgeted genre pic.
The film follows Emmanuel’s Evie, a floundering New York City artist who takes a DNA test that eventually connects her to a previously unknown English cousin named Oliver Alexander (Hugh Skinner). The Alexander family turns out to be quite wealthy, and Oliver urges Evie to attend a family friend’s wedding in the English countryside. In "Army of Thieves," Nathalie Emmanuel played a jewel thief in a zombie-adjacent world, but in "The Invitation," she's no longer content to be carrying out heists on the sidelines while monsters run amok elsewhere. "The Invitation" puts her right down in the thick of things with a "sexy aristocrat" in the countryside, per the official synopsis. The familiar "Dracula" setup betrays the film's not-so-secret vampire recipe, which is further bolstered by the appearance of fangs and blood-drinking and the name-dropping of Bram Stoker characters in the trailer for "The Invitation."
Emmanuel stars in "The Invitation" as Evie, a woman without family who discovers through a DNA test that she has a long-lost cousin, "the whitest man" her friend has ever seen. She responds to a wedding invite from him in order to learn about her family history, but as it turns out, her family tree may be something of an evergreen,...

“Escape From Kabul Airport,” a documentary airing on BBC Two in September, will tell the inside story of the 18 days in August 2021, when the U.S. withdrew its troops from Afghanistan, and the subsequent evacuation of thousands of Afghan citizens from Kabul airport after the Taliban seized the city.
The documentary is an Amos production for the BBC, in association with HBO and in collaboration with Arte France. It is produced by Emmy and BAFTA-winning Dan Reed (“Leaving Neverland”) and directed by Jamie Roberts (“Four Hours At The Capitol”).
The film combines never before seen on-the-ground archival footage from the evacuation, alongside interviews with evacuees, eye-witnesses, U.S. Marines and Taliban fighters.
Roberts said: “When the images of the chaotic Kabul airlift flashed across the news I immediately wanted to know more about what this historic moment looked and felt like on the ground, through the eyes of the people who were there.

As soon as it was announced that Zack Snyder would be directing a sci-fi epic called Rebel Moon for the Netflix streaming service, Snyder made it clear that they were hoping this would be a franchise-starter. He told The Hollywood Reporter that he wanted Rebel Moon to be “a massive IP and a universe that can be built out”… and even though the first Rebel Moon only started filming a few months ago, Netflix has already secured California tax credits for a sequel. Which they’re currently calling Rebel Moon: Part 2.
The California Film Commission announced their latest round of credit allocations this morning, and Variety reports that Netflix was given 37.1 million worth of tax credits – which is 40 of the total that were given out. 16.6 million of that will be going toward the production of Rebel Moon: Part 2. “The Gray Man” is Netflix’s biggest action movie to date (its budget is said to be more than 200 million) – and one of its best.
The new Russo Brothers movie stars Ryan Gosling as the shadowy agent of the title, who gets involved in a job gone wrong and soon finds himself being hunted by Chris Evans as a mustachioed psychopath. There’s some truly harrowing spy-versus-spy action and some nice emotional beats as well. It’s so satisfying, in fact, that it might leave you hankering for some more action movies you can only find on Netflix.
