Doa yang Mengancam (the Threatening Prayer) is a film directed by Hanung Bramantyo that released in the year of 2008. the story puts Aming, a very famous Indonesian comedian as the main actor, playing a role as Madrim. Madrim is a very hopeless man, he lives in poor working as a porter in a traditional market that makes his beautiful wife finally betrays him by leaving. having nothing left, he then has to go out from his house. one day he comes to his only friend, Kadir, and tell him all of his problem. Kadir then suggests Madrim to pray and put more faith in God. Madrim follows the suggestion to pray, but none of his prayer coming to reality. feeling disappointed, he cursed God and say if in three days, still, none of his prayer come to reality, he will turn away and worship to Satan. on the third day, Madrim starts to wander when he suddenly struck by a lightning in an open land. he was coma for a few days, and when he finally woke up he had a strange ability that then leads him into a more misfortune life. CAST – despite of Aming who is known as a comedian, he acts naturally along the story, no wonder he won Bandung Film Festival for Commendable Film Main Actor through this movie. STORY – they have a quite good story line but a very limited duration I guess, they serve us with too many conflicts (also resolutions) but some things in the story weren't developed well. CINEMATOGRAPHY – somehow Hanung Bramantyo never fails to put the details on the movie such as the way he puts the depiction of the poverty with many frame of a zoomed in fish, vegetables and stuff in market, also by the gloomy color and atmosphere along the story. even though the idea of the story is a bit unrealistic, but at the same time it contains a message that we have to always look after our words.

On the third day, lightning strikes him and he falls unconscious. When he wakes up, he finds out that his wish has come true: he has become rich and powerful. However, he also realizes that his life has changed for the worse: he has lost his wife, his friends, and his faith.
In this review, I will analyze the film's strengths and weaknesses, and give my overall impression of it.
The film's main strength lies in its message and theme. The message by Hanung Bramantyo is clear and relevant, warning the audience about the dangers of greed, materialism, and losing one's moral compass. The film shows how Madring's wish comes with a high price, and how he suffers the consequences of his actions. The film also explores the theme of faith and destiny, questioning whether God exists and whether He listens to our prayers. The film challenges the audience to reflect on their own values and beliefs, and what they would do in Madring's situation.
The film's main weakness lies in its execution and quality. The execution by Hanung Bramantyo is mediocre and inconsistent, failing to deliver a compelling and engaging story. The film suffers from poor pacing, weak characterization, and illogical plot developments. The film also lacks tension and suspense, making it predictable and boring. The quality by Sinemart Pictures is low and amateurish, showing some flaws in the production value. The film looks like a cheap TV movie that could have used more polish and professionalism.
In conclusion, "Doa yang Mengancam (2008)" is a film that has a good message but a bad delivery. The film showcases Hanung Bramantyo's vision as a filmmaker, but also reveals his flaws as a storyteller. The film is a moralistic and thought-provoking experience but a disappointing one that lacks creativity and excellence. -
Bad execution, bad cameo acting, so many unnecessary scenes, and a story line that doesn't develop at all.
Overall, I feel very bored spending 1 hour 55 minutes watching this film. You can skip so many parts but still get the main story. Looks like the scriptwriter ran out of ideas to convey the plot.
This could be a good drama if they could convey the moral lesson with a good script and well-directed actors. However, I give two thumbs up for Aming, Jojon, and Ramzi in this film.
The picture quality itself looks very cheap, just like a regular TV movie. And the way they put filters in place to create a gloomy atmosphere throughout the film is just unnatural.
To bad, it's a great plot with a great moral lesson but it's delivered so badly.
