This week’s question comes from A.V. Club reader Rob Grizzly:
“To celebrate its 10th anniversary, I was recently listening to and reading up on Evanescence’s album The Open Door. Looking at her process, I came to the conclusion the band’s frontwoman, Amy Lee, could make some great movie scores if she wanted to. My question is: Which musical artist (that hasn’t already done so) do you think would make a great film composer?”

Stiles, Allison and Scott struggles to tell the difference between dreams and reality after coming back from the dead in Teen Wolf’s winter premiere, “Anchors.”
In the summer finale, Siles (Dylan O’Brien), Allison (Crystal Reed) and Scott (Tyler Posey) underwent a supernatural ritual that essentially left them in a semi-dead state to free their consciousness to find their parents before they were used as human sacrifices. Dr. Deaton (Seth Gilliam) had warned them that the risky procedure was not without consequences. In their temporary death, the three friends invited darkness into their hearts, and now that darkness is slowly taking over their lives.

A six month streak of not having to turn a movie off early has been broken by Phase 4 Films' A Darker Reality. This reviewer wanted to turn this film off at the twenty minute mark, but an obligation kept this critic watching until about the one hour point. The film did not improve. Starring Daniel Baldwin, A Darker Reality is a reimaging of Chris Kazmier's earlier film Dark Reality (2006). This product was finished in 2008; unsurprisingly, this follow-up waited three years before finding a release date. And this reviewer hopes that Kazmier gives up on this atorcious series or finds money to improve his filmmaking style. Full of bad acting, zero musical selections, dark sets and tortuous scenes, A Darker Reality gets a place on 28Dla's Worst Films of...

In The Open Door, a bunch of insufferable rich teenage brats are planning the party of the year, but Angelica can't go. Her strict parents have grounded her, and even though they are going out of town for the weekend, they are calling the house every hour to make sure she doesn't sneak out. Angelica is desperate to get to the big party of the year because she plans to lose her virginity to the boy of her dreams, so she calls a pirate radio station that she heard some kids talking about at school. The radio station is only live on nights with a full moon, and the host promises to grant wishes to anyone who calls in. Unfortunately, these wishes come with a catch, and Angelica's wishes go terribly wrong.

Director: Sonny Laguna.
Writers: Tommy Wiklund, and Sonny Laguna.
Tagline: "Hell just froze over."
It is amazing that so many first time directors start with horror. Perhaps it is the formula of this genre that draws so many here or maybe it is because there are so many fans of the genre out there. Sonny Laguna is the latest to test his mettle in horror with Blood Runs Cold and his efforts are only partially satisfying. Released on DVD in the United Kingdom last October, Blood Runs Cold is your typical slasher with lots of murder and sparse dialogue. A cold-blooded and nameless killer stalks several youth in an isolated cabin. There is no backstory for the killer and the ample blood effects try to distract you from the film's lack of complexity. Just grab an axe and keep chopping!
Really, the plot has been summed up above.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films.
Director/writer: Doc Duhame.
The Open Door is Doc Duhame's first film as a writer and director. Duhame has a background in stunts and some of his experience in physical acting comes through in the characters actions and in the stunt performances. This title is an independent production to be released by Phase 4 Films on DVD November 15th, but this is not a low production film. Instead, this is a tightly wound thriller that plays with the horror audience's expectations, while hiding the film's true intentions and story.
The face of evil is forever off screen in The Open Door which heightens the film's mystique. More of a voice of evil, a pirate radio station broadcasts to the San Fernando Valley. This silky smooth voice promises to fulfill dreams while empowering listeners to do what is best for themselves.

After a five-year absence, Evanescence is back with a vengeance – and another No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. The rock act’s self-titled album bows with 127,000 copies this week, a second chart-topper after its 2006 set “The Open Door.” That set moved 447,000 in its first week. Adele’s “21” remains in the top three again, holding tight at No. 2 with 111,000 (-1%). At No. 3 is Five Finger Death Punch with their best sales and charting week. “American Capitalist” sold 91,000, besting the rock act’s last “War Is the Answer,” which debuted at No. 7 with 44,000...

Amy Lee and Evanescence will be back in a familiar place next week with their first album in five years. Evanescence's self-titled effort will hit #1 on the Billboard 200 on sales of 127,000, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. While impressive, the sales were less than half of what the band's 2006 sophomore album, The Open Door, sold (447,000) in its first week in 2006.
Hard rockers Five Finger Death Punch lock down the #3 slot with American Capitalist (91,000), easily besting "American Idol" runner-up Lauren Alaina, whose Wildflower hits the chart at #5 on sales of 69,000.
Also debuting in the top 10 are Ryan Adams' 13th effort, Ashes & Fire, which sold 49,000 copies, and country star Martina McBride, whose Eleven sneaks in at #10 (40,000).

On Wednesday (October 19), Evanescence officially completed their comeback when it was announced that their self-titled third album would top next week's Billboard albums chart, with sales of more than 127,000 copies.
It's the band's second-consecutive #1 debut: As any Ev fan surely knows, their last was five years ago, when The Open Door bowed atop the charts in 2006.
And in the time since, they've shed members, gone on a hiatus and, as frontwoman Amy Lee told MTV News, very nearly called it quits entirely.
So you can certainly understand why Lee and her bandmates are feeling so happy today. In an e-mail to MTV News, the singer decided to share a bit of that happiness with us and with Evanescence's fanbase.

Five years after its last album, Evanescence looks like a sure bet to return to the top of the Billboard 200 with its self-titled set next week. The album, the first since 2006’s “The Open Door,” will likely sell up to 120,000 copies, according to Hits Daily Double. “The Open Door” opens with sales of 447,000 in its first frame. There’s a horse race for second place as Adele’s “21,” Scotty McCreery’s “Clear As Day” and the new title from Five Finger Death Punch, “American Capitalist,” are too close to call as of Friday. A few months ago, I was sitting in a bar in Nashville watching Amy Lee play Ping-Pong. This was amazing for several reasons, the least of which was the fact that she was actually pretty good.
Because while the image of Lee — frequently corseted dark princess of hard rock — clutching a tiny racquet certainly threw me for a loop, it was the action around her that really struck me. Her bandmates were sitting at a nearby table, cracking jokes with the road crew, cheering whenever she cracked a return volley over the net or caught the corner of the table with an arcing lob shot. Lee was laughing and taunting her opponent, who just so happened to be her husband,...

Whether this is due to them appealing to an enduring audience, or that they possess an aura and a sound that attracts certain ages and tastes, or even if it’s because of the simple fact that they churn out quality material again and again, their popularity means that they’ve managed to do what many bands try and fail at. And that is: they’ve made a success out of themselves and have the ability to create music that remains popular through the years.
Evanescence is one of these bands. Their first album, ‘Fallen’, released in 2003, was hugely popular and propelled the band to fame almost immediately. It sold more than 15 million copies worldwide, is one of 8 albums in the history of the Billboard chart to spend at least a year in its top 50 (it spent 104 weeks) and was certified Platinum status 7 times.

Evanescence are back from their hiatus by releasing a fresh song called "What You Want". A furious, yet radio-friendly rock song, it opens with drum-smacking sound and kicks in with Amy Lee's powerful voice which helps punctuate the vibes.
"What You Want" is recorded for the band's upcoming studio album "Evanescence". Amy said of the song in a recent interview with MTV, "It's got a cool meaning, a lot of great lyrics going on, it also just smacks you right in the face and it's heavy and it's great."
A music video for the single has been filmed, and it's made as a "sort of, like, the history of the band." Amy gushed, "This is more a personal video. We've done a lot in the past that [were] very 'fantasy,' and this is sort of the real us."
Talking about their hiatus, Amy confessed, "I had a little bit of an identity crisis.

After a 20-month hiatus from performing, Evanescence returned to the stage in fine, fighting form Monday (August 8) for the exclusive "MTV First: Evanescence," treating viewers to the first live performance of their comeback single, "What You Want," followed by a lengthy no-holds-barred Q&A.
The energy in the room and onstage was palpable. The live audience at Blackbird Studios — the recording house where the band laid down the majority of their forthcoming, self-titled album — held on and rocked out to each and every note, particularly frontwoman Amy Lee's powerful vocals.

It's been nearly four years since Evanescence wrapped the tour in support of their The Open Door album ... and in the time since, as any fan of the band will tell you, Amy Lee and Co. spent most days doing anything but Evanescence.
Of course, all that has recently changed. Their self-titled comeback album is due in stores October 11, and the snarling first single, "What You Want," is waiting in the wings. Last weekend, they shot a video for the song, and they're gearing up for a massive world tour.
In a way, you could say they're making up for lost time, which has made the past month a rather hectic ride, indeed.
"We haven't started rehearsing [for the tour] yet, actually. ... It's just been a crazy run-around.

The record industry finally had some good news to report in the first half of the year thanks to some incremental positive growth as a result of strong album sales from Lady Gaga, Adele, Katy Perry and Nicki Minaj. But with six months left in 2011, the returns could bulge even further if even half of the albums left on label rosters see the light of day.
Release dates have constantly shifted and some aren't even on schedules yet, but the second half of this year promises new releases from Lil Wayne; Kanye West and Jay-z; Dr. Dre; Evanescence; Joe Jonas; last year's chart slayers, country trio Lady Antebellum; dance master David Guetta; and original "American Idol" Kelly Clarkson.

Amy Lee is having a hard time talking about Evanescence's upcoming album, partially because she's out of practice — it's been a while since the band's frontwoman has had to run the press gauntlet, after all — but mostly because she keeps using words like "fun" to describe it. And even she realizes how odd that seems.
"I can't give a good quote about it, because it's probably the heaviest record we've ever done, but we're having a great time making it," the singer said, laughing. "I don't want to say the word 'fun,' but it is ... it's totally fun. We're just going for it. So I don't want to say that it's 'expressing the pain of a thousand sorrows,' because it's not that. Evanescence are set to return in October with their first album in more than five years, according to frontwoman/mastermind Amy Lee.
In a new interview with Billboard, Lee says that the follow-up to the band's multiplatinum The Open Door is nearly complete — they're putting the finishing touches on it in Nashville — and is scheduled to hit stores on October 4 through the band's longtime label, Wind-up Records.
And, as is the case with seemingly everything Evanescence, there was certainly no shortage of drama surrounding its creation ... including an 18-month hiatus Lee took from the group at the conclusion of the Door touring cycle.

And just what is a “Renaissance Man” anyway? No, I’m not referring to the Voyager episode and I’m also not talking about the Penny Marshall film. In this context, the term Renaissance Man is defined as a person who excels at many different endeavors: the guy can do a lot of stuff and he does it all quite well. Such a one is the subject of this interview.
Larry Blamire first came across my radar when he and I were both living in Hollywood. I was at a private screening in the home of a friend of mine and he rolled a film called The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. I was transfixed. What a delightful way to spend some time; laughing yourself silly. I immediately found a way to contact this man as I wanted to know what makes him tick.

In the early part of the 21st century, the rock scene was dominated by a new era of indie rock, one that had rebelled against the nü-metal of the turn of the century and developed a whole new aesthetic that covered both the sonic and visual worlds. Bands like the Strokes, the White Stripes, the Hives and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs were doing new things with rock constructions that were simultaneously looking forward and looking back. It was a thrilling time to be a rock fan. But in 2003, the band that made the biggest impact had nothing to do with that trend. Evanescence seemingly came from nowhere, released their debut album Fallen on this day in 2003 and proceeded to lay waste to most of the rock universe for the rest of the year.

Vanessa Lynn Williams is a strikingly beautiful, well respected, and multi-talented star of the stage and screen. This critically acclaimed American actress/model/singer/songwriter arrived on March 18, 1963, leaving no doubt that a star was born. As if somehow predicting the future, her parents, Helen and Milton Augustine Williams Jr., issued a birth announcement which read "Here she is, Miss America." After competing in beauty pageants since the early 1980's, Vanessa was indeed crowned Miss America 1984 on September 17, 1983, making history as the first African-American woman to earn the title. Her parents, both half white/half African American, were music teachers who recognized and encouraged Vanessa's love of the arts from early on. Vanessa and her younger brother Chris, also an actor, were raised in a predominantly white, middle-class town in the suburban area of Milwood, New York. As a child, Vanessa studied piano and the french horn, but her primary...

Part 2 of the Big Bear Horror Film Festival recap. Read Part 1 here.
Saturday
After being up way too late the night before watching Golden Girls and Sex And The City reruns in my hotel room (P.S., I’m totally gay), it was time to get back to the Big Bear Horror Film Festival for a really great film, Die-ner (Get It?).
Yes, the “Get It?” is part of the film title, which I’m now publicly begging the filmmakers to change. Why? Because this film is so much smarter than the title. Die-ner (Get It?) is a well directed, well written and well acted serial-killer-plus-zombie flick that makes great use of its limited resources. I don’t want to give too much away, but I definitely recommend Patrick Horvath’s awesome motion picture.
As we walk out of the theater for a quick break, J.T. Seaton* and Michael Simon* join our gay horror cabal.

As I drove up the winding mountain road to Big Bear, CA in the pitch-black night, I wondered, “What’s gay about the Big Bear Horror Film Festival?” Answer: just about everything.
What I didn’t realize before arriving was that a large homo contingent would be in attendance. In fact, there were so many gays in this tiny mountain village, to write “out gay ____” before each name I mention would be a chore. So I’m going to denote all the gay up in Big Bear with a “*”.
The Backstory: Several months ago Bbhf founder Michael Coulombe* pinged me via this blog with some very preliminary info on the fest. Sensing an opportunity to spread my super-important opinions around, I offered myself up as a judge for the festival. Realizing what a publicity juggernaut this blog can be, he immediately said, “Yes!” and I was on board.

Film school's not for everybody, but it clearly paid off for Ross Ching. The former San Diego State grad made a stop-motion animated music video to Death Cab For Cutie's "Little Bribes," stuck up on his website and posted that he was looking for a job. After seeing it for themselves, the rock band picked up the video as the official clip for the song and Atlantic, their label, is now employing Ching for some other projects. Way to go, education! The song was culled from Dcfc's latest Ep, "The Open Door," released in April. We like the double-emphasis on the...
