Same premise but not nearly as funny with the new hosts... the commentary from John Henson and John Anderson, as well as the silly digital art add ins are what made it a blast to watch. I used to laugh so hard tears were rolling down my face now it's just an occasional cackle.

looker053 April 2021Like many here I'm a big fan of the original, Henson's contrast to Anderson's straight man was the strength of this show, mainly, it was natural and believable. The chemistry in this incarnation seems forced, just a couple of people (Cena's the only known person) reading cue cards. Same with Camille, just eye-candy, not much more, Jill had charm, wit, and good looks, and she was natural and believable in her spot. I do hope hope they find a new audience who never saw the original, they might be entertained, but sadly, I couldn't even finish the first episode. I'll pass.

Casting: the hosts are bland and they don't work well together. Its just a hodge podge of celeb status in front of a teleprompter. The contestants are also bad. They feel like the annoying people that are the first to get booted out of any other game show, but its of the entire cast. The intro's to the cast are a great time to stand up and get a drink of water/ bathroom break.
Editing: its very rushed. Every wipeout has 3 different.camera angles real time, which takes the punch out of any slip or trip.every skit that involves editing also feels like a 6th grader with imovie was in charge. Even the minimalist yellow stick figures running through the courses is better
Obstacles: Yuck. The best part of the show is the obstacles, and it doesn't deliver. The regular wipeout color scheme is red, blue, and black, which makes the reboot's cyan, yellow, and magenta feel like a bollywood knockoff from first glance. The saturation of the entire show hurts your eyes, like the grass is wayyyyy too green. Lastly, the big red balls just seem cheap. Not to mention its always fun the see someone just covered in mud from the sucker-punch splat on them. You'll never see that here.
Episode layout: its alright. The only problem is that every episode is doubles episodes, and there's only 3 rounds instead of the usual 4.
Jokes: nonexistent. I mean, there is jokes, just that theyre not funny. 10 seconds in there is a "I'm john cena" joke, which never lands no matter who says it. The only joke that was somewhat funny was an adult joke, but it was meager.
All in all, there is not a single reason to watch it, especially compared to the original seasons, the hosts are better,the contestants are more memorable, the jokes and skits stick better,the interactions seem genuine, the obstacles are more interesting, so on and so forth. Heck, Nickelodeons' "Splatalot" is 1000x better than this dumpster heap.. -

Watching Holey Moley and seeing Rob and Joe go back and forth is a pleasure. Floor is Lava is also quite entertaining. I even liked Cannonball even though it was not up to that level. I also thought John Cena did a credible job on American Grit and Nicole Byer's work on Nailed It is first rate. I say all of this to illustrate that I was so looking forward to a new Wipeout.
However, this iteration of Wipeout may be the worst new television show of ANY kind I've seen in decades. The course is fine and the structure of the rounds works well. However, something is seriously wrong here. The lines John and Nicole are given are not just unfunny, they are truly, as my subject line says, cringe-worthy. Additionally, none of their reactions to the contestants seem genuine. It's like they are watching a tape of the contestants and then trying to come up with a line that fits.
The editing of the early rounds is also choppy and disjointed. It's almost like they need to skip those rounds and move on to the two semi-final heats and then the final.
The contestants are just as wacky as they've always been. As I said, the course is fine and the format of the rounds works, too. I beg TBS to take a step back and re-cut this with new hosts or new writing before showing any more episodes. And, while you are at it, stop showing the ones you've aired so far. We KNOW this premise works. Do something or take this garbage off the air. -

The two new hosts have no chemistry whatsoever and cannot make a single good joke to save their pathetic lives. Please cancel the show or at least bring back both former Johns (NOT John Cena!). The level of frustration and anger I felt when I watched the show was unimaginable!

unevensediment7 April 2021I think that they really need to play to the host's strengths more. During the unscripted zone commentary, we saw that Cena is actually really good at the play commentary. However, the first 2 rounds show the hosts reading some pretty bad jokes that they're terrible at selling. All of the hosts are fine, they're just being misused. Another issue I had was with the editing of the first round. We didn't see a single full run and it felt more like a YouTube fail compilation than a TV show. If these issues are fixed, this could be a great show. I'm sure that it'll get better as time goes on and that they'll start scripting the hosts less.

duckhuntertrevor17 May 2021I'm a longtime fan of Wipeout, and I've watched it since the original season 1 in 2008. While I do feel the older Wipeout is more funnier in my opinion and the classic Johns were the better hosts, I felt Nicole Byer and John Cena are decent as hosts.
One legitimate complaint I do have is how they don't show the names of the individual contestants, rather showing the team names as a whole. As well as the fact that I think they should show a full list of people who competed in each episode (kinda like how American Ninja Warrior has ANWNation to bookkeep everyone who participated). Information and media was a lot more scarce then for the classic 2008-2014 seasons, so I wish they had that recorded somewhere online.
However, giving credit where credit is due, I still feel the obstacles and game show format is the same as ever. It still has some of that same charm as the older Wipeout seasons in terms of game show format (although there are some major changes that I'm kinda indifferent about, such as everyone being a duo and there only being three rounds total per episode).
I'm not sure how to feel overall, I guess I would say this is kinda a guilty pleasure for the most part. I can tell you guys however, that if you look at any other rating here, you'll see (and this is pretty common for IMDb) that there's a bunch of nostalgiafreaks panning this show. Honestly, don't trust any of the other nostalgiaturds' reviews. Don't take my review as a word of fact. If you like it or if you don't like it, that's perfectly fine. It's your call. -
Like many reboots, the Wipeout "revival" struggles to do a justice to the original
There are many reasons why this Wipeout fails to meet the mark, the overarching failure being that it is bland.
The course itself is a mirage of bright colors, but it lacks any distinctive theme. One thing that made the original Wipeout so enjoyable was the presence of unique themes from one episode to the next. The course looks slightly more difficult, but the obstacles just aren't interesting.
An attempt is made to highlight contestants' unique character traits, but editing is repetitive from one contestant (or pair of contestants) to the next. This makes it hard to appreciate contestants on the same level that was once possible.
The Hosts, John Cena and Nicole Buyer, lack cohesiveness and fail to bring the same one-two bunch brought by John Henson and John Anderson. This is largely due to poor screenwriting and partly due to the difference in the personalities of Cena and Buyer.
As mentioned before, editing does this show no good. There used to be so many unique edits in Wipeout, but now edits feel generic and repetitive.
The camera quality is a big upgrade, but it's also slightly unnerving. A show like Wipeout doesn't need picture-perfect camera quality, less traditional camera work fits the show's aura like a glove.
The biggest disappointment is to think about what this show could be compared to what it is. Watch the new Wipeout, then go back and watch an episode of the old Wipeout. It becomes clear that there was little-no effort to make this Wipeout a true revival of the old Wipeout. They marketed it as the return of Wipeout and it has not met or come close to expectations, therefore it gets a 2/10.
Hopefully the remaining episodes of Wipeout have a layout different than the first, but I wouldn't be too optimistic. -

dvalerga23 April 2021I used to love the show. John Henson and John Anderson were ten times better than John Cena and Nicole Byer. John Henson and John Anderson personality played off each other and made it great. Also in the first challenge you see the first contestant go through the complete course. And same with the last. They would laugh and repete the contestants trying to go through the obstacle and fail. Where the other two john cena and nichole Byer seem to be showing their faces more than the contestants. And the jokes from John Cena and Nicole Byer are really bad. John Cena needs to go back to what he knows best and that's wrestling. This show might not make it past the 1st season if they keep these two. Maybe they can get Mike Mizanin to do the show. Hes way better than john Cena.

It's not funny at all, the hosts are given terrible dialogue on a teleprompter, and it fails on every single level. I absolutely loved the original series, but this one needs to be cancelled immediately and reworked completely. There's some potential here, but absolutely none of it was present in the premiere episode.

magnoliacc2 April 2021The whole show has changed and just does not work. Instead of following contestants through the entire course (like in the past series), you only get snippets of the contestants going through the course. The program jumps around and it's hard to follow.
I don't have anything against the cast, but they just don't work with this series. All of them seem awkward and are not funny at all. The old group worked much better with the show. I was a long time fan of the show, but won't be watching it anymore....sad. -
