2017-06-21T07:05:10-07:00'Han Solo' Directors Fired During Production
Creative differences is a term that is often used loosely when a director is fired from a Hollywood movie.
But it actually appears to ring true in case of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who have been let go by Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy from directing the Star Wars spinoff that centers on the fan-favorite character Han Solo.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the style and vision of Lord and Miller clashed with that of Lawrence Kasdan, the legendary screenwriter behind the classics Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark, who also wrote, with his son, Jon Kasdan, the script for the Han Solo stand-alone set (for now) to be released in 2018.
Lord and Miller (21 Jump Street, The Lego Movie) have a comedic sensibility and improvisational style while Kasdan favors a strict adherence to the written word — what is on the page is what must be shot.
The creative clash, according to one insider, also came down to differences in understanding the character of Han Solo. “People need to understand that Han Solo is not a comedic personality. He’s sarcastic and selfish,” said that source.

The next Star Wars movie to ramp up production will be the Han Solo early years/origin movie that’s being put together by directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord. Alden Ehrenreich has been cast as Han Solo in the film, and the screenplay is being penned by Miller, Lord, Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan.
Now we learn too that the hunt is on for a young Lando Calrissian, as played by Billy Dee Williams in the original movies. It’s early days, but it seems as though Community star Donald Glover is the top choice for the role.
Glover is currently working on Spider-Man: Homecoming and it’s unclear whether he’s interested in the Star Wars role at this stage. Expect casting to be cemented soon,...

The next Star Wars movie is only 322 days away. But while Rogue One: A Star Wars Story might be the next installment out of the gate, today we’re focusing on Star Wars: Episode VIII and star Daisy Ridley. Rumors have been swirling that Episode VIII is undergoing rewrites in light of how popular certain characters have become. There’s even been speculation that Disney pushed the date of the movie to December to accommodate these changes. Before all this, John Boyega surprised fans in Brixton at a screening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. While talking to fans, the conversation turned to Boyega’s next turn as Finn. He seemed confident production was about to gear up: [W]e are so happy to be starting on Episode Eight in a few weeks in London and it is going to be fun. That was right around Christmas. Now — a month later...

The next Star Wars film that is set to be released is Gareth Edward's Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and it comes out later this year! I'm super excited about this one because it's a heist film that revolves around a team of resistance fighters who band together to steal the plans to the Empire's Death Star. There's still a lot we don't know about this movie, but Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy previously said:
“Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to theStar Wars universe. It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Oh boy. 2017 is shaping up to be a very big year between Episode VIII, Justice League, War for the Planet of the Apes. In December of 2017, they'll be pitting James Cameron's Avatar 2 against Steven Spielberg's Ready Player One adaptation. The next Star Wars movie is already confirmed for May of 2017, and now Cameron has confirmed that Avatar 2 is headed for release in December of 2017. It was initially reported in January that Cameron was delaying the release until 2017 giving them more time to work on the scripts and put plans together. This is going to be a brand new Avatar trilogy, with new ones coming every year. Here's the latest quote from James Cameron in an interview with the Montreal Gazette (via ComingSoon): "Christmas of '17 is the target," Cameron confirmed of the expected release of Avatar 2. "At least, that's what we've announced. But I don't consider...

The next Star Wars film has been enjoying finishing touches, which means J.J. Abrams is on the final leg of his mad hype dash to get you pumped about the December 18 movie. As part of a Sirius Xm Town Hall on Monday, the Force Awakens helmer disclosed that the project has given him a newfound appreciation for one of the saga's main, already-most beloved characters. "There's this moment that's in the trailer — so I'm not giving anything away — but where Han is telling these two new protagonists about how the Force is real and how the Jedi and everything they've heard is true," Abrams said (of the character whom he calls his favorite and whom he believes definitely shot first). "It's cool because he’s telling them the story in the Millennium Falcon, literally six feet from where he was sitting 40 years ago, saying that it's all bullshit.

Production on the 13th Star Trek movie, penned by Doug Jung and Simon Pegg, is underway.
The next Star Trek film, which is reportedly set to be called Star Trek Beyond, has finally commenced photography. The movie has had a race against time to get its screenplay ready in time (not an unwelcome problem, given that blockbusters used to shoot without something as inconvenient as a script!), with Simon Pegg and Doug Jung putting together the final script for the movie. Justin Lin, who has helmed four Fast & Furious films, is calling the shots on this one. Jj Abrams, as you know, is on Star Wars duties.
And the shoot has now begun. The first shots for Star Trek Beyond have been captured in British Columbia, where location work is taking place. It's anticipated that much of the new Star Trek film will be shot behind closed doors, though. Don't...

Justin Lin recalls the point where Jj Abrams called him, and offered him the Star Trek job. Plus, a further hint as to the new film.
The next Star Trek movie is believed to go by the name of Star Trek Beyond. Right about now, Simon Pegg and Doug Jung should be done with the screenplay too, and thus new director Justin Lin - taking over from Jj Abrams - will soon be about to start production.
Chatting to Deadline, Lin has now revealed how he got the Star Trek job in the first place, revealing that "I was in the last week shooting True Detective when Jj Abrams called last December".
As Lin recalled, "he asked me, do you like Star Trek? If you do, you should take this, be bold, and just go for it. I thought about how much a part of my life Star Trek was.

Simon Pegg hasn't read Roberto Orci's earlier draft for the next Star Trek film. Plus, he shares his thoughts on Star Trek Into Darkness.
Simon Pegg has been chatting to our colleagues over at Den Of Geek Us about his new movie, Kill Me Three Times, and they've asked him a few more questions about the new Star Trek movie, that he's writing with Doug Jung.
He's confirmed that the screenplay that he and Jung are working on bears no relation to the earlier draft by Roberto Orci. "It's completely new. I haven't read Bob's script and they didn't want us to. So we went back to the drawing board", he said.
"We had creative meetings with Justin [Lin, director] and there were things he wanted in there. I haven't written like this before. I've never been a custodian of something, it's usually mine when I'm writing. Whereas with this, you're given a bunch of stuff.

Hardly anything is creating as much buzz lately as the Star Wars franchise in general, and what seems to be of even more interest is anything to do with the stand-alone films.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Felicity Jones is moving straight from award season darling to Star Wars lead. It’s quite a move from The Theory of Everything, but I have the impression that she could do something very interesting with the role and considering that Chris Weitz is now writing the screenplay, the whole affair could turn out even more brilliant than you hope.
Probably the most interesting thing about the films is really how little is known, and how little anyone wants you to know. Especially if we take the idea of the franchise-wide films, and the question of how far and fast is Disney going to run with this?
At any rate,...

Justin Lin's new Star Trek film is apparently on the hunt for three new major female characters - and Bryan Cranston...
The next Star Trek film (known as either Star Trek 3 or Star Trek 13, depending on your preference) is slowly assembling its crew, and we've discovered over the past 30 days or so that Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) is to direct, whilst Simon Pegg and Doug Jung are penning the latest draft of the script. It's believed that Roberto Orci's story is no longer being used, although that's not been 100% confirmed.
So what's new, then? Well, the folks over at Film Divider reckon they have some details on what we can expect.
Firstly, the plan appears to be to introduce three major new female characters to the current Star Trek screen adventures. One will be the captain of another Federation ship. Then there's going to be the President...

As Justin Lin steps in to direct Star Trek 3/Star Trek 13, it seems that Roberto Orci won't be writing it after all...
Just a month ago, the position with the new Star Trek sequel, due in 2016, was that Roberto Orci would be returning to co-write the script, as well as serving as producer. Furthermore, he was set to make his directorial debut with the project.
It would be fair to say that things have changed. Quite a lot.
Firstly, we learned earlier this month that Orci wouldn't be directing the film. We now know that Fast & Furious' Justin Lin is taking the project on instead. And the latest update? In a series of posts on the TrekMovie message boards, Orci seems to indicate that he's not writing the screenplay either.

Last Friday, the long-awaited first teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens finally dropped, giving fans their first brief glimpse at the sort of movie J.J. Abrams is making, as well as some flashes of some of the new cast members. The teaser naturally went down a storm, cementing the movie’s status as quite possibly the most anticipated of all time.
One of the first questions after the trailer dropper was: well, when does the full trailer drop? No official word has gone out on this yet, though the likely candidates are either the Superbowl on February 1st (with an audience of billions), or in front of Avengers: Age of Ultron in May (with a still-substantial audience of hundreds of millions).

Updated: The next Star Wars film after Star Wars: Episode VII will land in December 2016.
News
Update: It's all official. A posting at StarWars.com has revealed that "Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016".
Our original story follows.
The escalation of director Gareth Edwards' career continues. Following his wonderful low budget movie Monsters, he's steered Warner and Legendary's Godzilla reboot to critical acclaim and box office gold. And now he's been hired by Lucasfilm to direct one of the planned Star Wars spin-offs.
The move, which presumably puts him out of the running for Godzilla 2 (a project he remains attached to for the minute), will see him helm a project such as the Boba Fett (which...

The Star Wars prequels weren’t exactly well-received by fans of the franchise, with many irked by a variety of plot points in those first three episodes. Well Jimmy Kimmel has a great idea for how J.J. Abrams can avoid that problem this time around – take ideas directly from the fans. Now we’d suggest that if he’s going to take fan ideas, Abrams should go look no further than one Patton Oswalt. But sadly with Patton not around, Kimmel instead pointed J.J. in the direction of his studio audience. One man dressed up as a jedi would like there to be a part in the new movie where Luke Skywalker fights someone with a lightsaber, and “also Princess Leia and Chewbacca should totally do it.” Okay, so these audience members were comic plants, but we did particularly enjoy the thoughts of one audience plant. “The next Star Wars.

Abrams fielded some pretty hilarious suggestions for the new Star Wars movie from a couple of audience members who turned out to be none other than Billy Dee Williams and William Shatner! "Well, I've got an idea. The next Star Wars, nothing but Lando," offered the erstwhile Lando Calrissian. "Two hours of Lando and beautiful ladies making love, sweet love in the galaxy." "Is that it?" asked J.J. "Of course. What else do you need?" replied the ever-smooth Williams, cracking a smile. The former Captain Kirk then...

Producer Bryan Burk has been J.J. Abrams’ behind-the-scenes wingman since the Alias days, so it’s worth paying close attention when he idly muses about a possible release date for the next Star Trek movie. That’s exactly what happened in the middle of an interview with Digital Spy. When asked about a possible release date for a sequel to this May’s Into Darkness, Burk said that — although there’s no specific release date — the team is “definitely talking about the next one…. We don’t want to wait four years.” Since 2016 marks the franchise’s 50th anniversary, it...

There’s been a lot of pushing the reset button in pop culture recently and I find the results interesting. J.J. Abrams rebooted the Star Trek franchise a few years back and, while some fans complained, I think it was successful. Certainly it was financially successful, which is what the Hollywood moguls really care about. At the start of Daniel Craig’s run, the James Bond movies were also rebooted, culminating in the recent spectacular Skyfall, which – again this may be heresy to some – was the best Bond film ever. It’s visually stunning and takes Bond himself to greater depths and heights than I’ve seen up until now. Sherlock Holmes has been reinterpreted into the modern age with two versions, the BBC’s magnificent Sherlock and Elementary on CBS. Both are true to the basics and it’s amazing how well the classic fictional detective gibes with modern times.

Hunky Jeremy Renner (who I always picture in black boxer briefs from The Unusuals) will be picking up the Bourne Identity spinoff series. I’m hoping for lots of chances to ogle him.
According to numbers king extraordinaire Nate Silver, same-sex marriage opponents are now in the minority in the United States. It seems likely that they’re still in the majority among likely voters, and likely to get on cable news.
Mel Gibson gave an exclusive interview to Deadline.com, with nothing off the table (other than what a court order prevents him from discussing). I’m nowhere near ready to forget his past, but he does sound oddly …centered about what happened. And I’d like to believe him when he say this: “I’ve never treated anyone badly or in a discriminatory way based on their gender, race, religion or sexuality -- period. I don’t blame...

From 2002 until 2008, twenty-two-year old Adamo Ruggiero played gay teen Marco Del Rossi on the long running teen drama Degrassi: The Next Generation. Viewers followed Marco as he struggled to come out to his friends, fell victim to a gay bashing, found love for the first time and simply struggled to find his way in the world as an openly gay man. Behind the scenes, Ruggiero dealt with his own personal coming out story, which mirrored his on screen counterpart’s life in many ways.
Recently, AfterElton.com talked to Ruggiero not only about his decision to come out of the closet, but how it affected his career, his feelings about his years at Degrassi, his thoughts about the struggles of young gay men today, his first feature film and much more.
But we started off by talking about his starring role in Dog Sees God, a stage play about the...
