Last month, Mock The Week was cancelled after 17 years on air. The satirical comedy was only one of a flurry of modern panel shows featuring teams of comedians, spawning from the format used in Have I Got News For You that emerged during the nineties and noughties. Taking cues from long-running Hignfy which hit TV screens in 1990, popular series such as Never Mind the Buzzcocks and the anarchic, absurd Shooting Stars were followed by the likes of Qi, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Would I Lie To You?, Celebrity Juice and, of course, Mock The Week. But with ratings plummeting and cancellations abounding, is it high time the genre called it a day?
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
These shows were initially a great way to finish off your evening after a long hard day at school or work, just like a late night chat show helps to wind our American friends down after the watershed.

“Love Island” host Laura Whitmore has quit the U.K. reality show after two and a half years.
Whitmore, a close friend of former host Caroline Flack, famously took over from the long-time presenter in January 2020, shortly after her December 2019 arrest for domestic assault and two months before Flack’s untimely suicide. Between the 2020 pre-pandemic winter “Love Island” and the 2021 and 2022 summer editions of the program, Whitmore has hosted three seasons in total.
Fans of the show, however, have noticed the presenter’s dwindling screen time in recent seasons, in which cast members have largely operated on their own and without a host. Whitmore’s main presence has been in the after-show “Aftersun.”
In a post to her official Instagram account on Monday night local time, the Irish model and TV presenter wrote: “Some news! I won’t be hosting the next series of Love island.

Exclusive: As the UK braces for lockdown 2.0 on Thursday, TV production will continue, but there will be inevitable side effects for studio comedy and entertainment shows, which are having to shut out audiences once again.
Live studio audiences had only just started to trickle back in August, but fans will no longer be able to attend their favorite shows as new four-week stay-at-home orders come into force on November 5 amid a second wave of coronavirus.
Among the shows impacted will be Strictly Come Dancing, the BBC One’s blockbuster dance competition, which provided an antidote to the Covid gloom for 10.3M viewers on Saturday — one of the show’s best audiences in two years.
But in a notice on the BBC studio audience website, producers said: “We’re sad to announce that we won’t be able to have a live studio audience for Strictly Come Dancing during November.”

Exclusive: All3Media has set up a comedy entertainment production company with two former top Fremantle executives, Deadline understands.
I hear that the British superindie has established Great Scott Media with Leon Wilson, who previously ran The X Factor and Got Talent production company Talkback Thames, and Ed Sleeman.
The pair left the Fremantle label earlier this year; Wilson was formerly MD of Talkback Thames, while Sleeman was MD of Talkback. The two companies were previously independent labels but merged in 2017 under the leadership of Fremantle UK CEO Liam Humphreys.
The pair were responsible for a slew of hit non-scripted series including Celebrity Juice, Through the Keyhole, and Harry’s Heroes, while Wilson also worked on Alan Carr’s Epic Gameshow, an ITV Saturday night primetime series that brings together the reboot of a number of classic American gameshows including The Price Is Right, Strike It Lucky and Play Your Cards Right.

Verne Troyer, the actor best known for playing Mini-Me in the “Austin Powers” films, has died. He was 49.
According to a statement posted on his Instagram account, the actor died Saturday afternoon. Troyer’s representatives did not disclose a cause of death, but the statement alluded to depression and suicide. Troyer’s reps said there would be no comment beyond the statement.
“Verne was also a fighter when it came to his own battles. Over the years he’s struggled and won, struggled and won, struggled and fought some more, but unfortunately this time was too much,” read the statement. “Depression and Suicide are very serious issues. You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside. Be kind to one another. And always know, it’s never too late to reach out to someone for help.”
It is with great sadness and incredibly heavy hearts to write that Verne passed away today. Verne was an extremely caring individual. He wanted to make everyone smile, be happy, and laugh. Anybody in need, he would help to any extent possible. Verne hoped he made a positive change with the platform he had and worked towards spreading that message everyday. He inspired people around the world with his drive, determination, and attitude. On film & television sets, commercial shoots, at comic-con’s & personal appearances, to his own YouTube videos, he was there to show everyone what he was capable of doing. Even though his stature was small and his parents often wondered if he’d be able to reach up and open doors on his own in his life, he went on to open more doors for himself and others than anyone could have imagined. He also touched more peoples hearts than he will ever know. Verne was also a fighter when it came to his own battles. Over the years he’s struggled and won, struggled and won, struggled and fought some more, but unfortunately this time was too much. During this recent time of adversity he was baptized while surrounded by his family. The family appreciates that they have this time to grieve privately. Depression and Suicide are very serious issues. You never know what kind of battle someone is going through inside. Be kind to one another. And always know, it’s never too late to reach out to someone for help. The Celebrity Juice panelists will compete to be Prime Minister on tonight's General Election special.
Rather than working in two teams, Holly Willoughby, Fearne Cotton, Joey Essex, Emma Willis, Ella Eyre and Chris Ramsey will go head-to-head in a series of typically outrageous challenges.
Dressed to impress, they must play games like 'What's in Ella Eyre's Hair?' and 'What You Talkin' 'Bout, Willis?', as well as taking part in a Mass Debate about the key questions facing Britain.
Finally, 'General Election or General Erection?' will task the six stars with working out whether close up photographs are from the election or from pornography.
Essex will serve as the programme's expert political correspondent, given his new-found knowledge of politics.
Speaking about his time with Britain's politicians, he admitted: "I think they are all geeks, it don't matter what they wear and what they eat. It's like, 'Shut up,...

Keith joins Gok for the 'Gangnam Style' dance before the pair share a birthday kiss together.
Gino, meanwhile, books a stripper for Keith as a birthday present, but it's not Kelly Brook as Keith hoped it would be.

We got Holly on the phone to talk about Jimmy Bullard in drag, the fitness of Piers Morgan, whether Frank Lampard's a diva, what she thinks of Katie Hopkins and why she's never too rude on TV...

Holly Willoughby has revealed that it was her idea to get Gino D'Acampo on Celebrity Juice.
The Play to the Whistle host told Digital Spy that she spotted his Juice potential when he was still a chef on This Morning - way before he filled in for her while she was on maternity leave.
"Gino's so lovely!" she said. "I remember the first time he came on Celebrity Juice, years and years ago, and he was a chef on This Morning then - which he still is occasionally!
"But that was kind of all he was really doing at that moment, and I was like, 'Oh, get Gino on, he's hilarious'. And now, as the years have gone on, he's now there, a team captain and the rest of it, and just really part of the show.
"I mean, he walks into the studio and everybody is chanting, 'Gino! Gino!
