As I drove up the winding mountain road to Big Bear, CA in the pitch-black night, I wondered, “What’s gay about the Big Bear Horror Film Festival?” Answer: just about everything.
What I didn’t realize before arriving was that a large homo contingent would be in attendance. In fact, there were so many gays in this tiny mountain village, to write “out gay ____” before each name I mention would be a chore. So I’m going to denote all the gay up in Big Bear with a “*”.
The Backstory: Several months ago Bbhf founder Michael Coulombe* pinged me via this blog with some very preliminary info on the fest. Sensing an opportunity to spread my super-important opinions around, I offered myself up as a judge for the festival. Realizing what a publicity juggernaut this blog can be, he immediately said, “Yes!” and I was on board.

Indie filmmaker Matthew Reel just got in touch with Fango with the first DVDetails on his new film Jessicka Rabid.
The film will be released on DVD by Plan 10 Pictures, the new company headed by filmmakers Tom Devlin and Lola Wallace, who recently released Easter Bunny, Kill! Kill! and The Trek. While an exact street date has not been announced for Jessicka Rabid, but we've got the first details below.
A dysfunctional family, the Hoffmans, have been living their lives in a veil of secrecy. Incest, rape are a part of their everyday lives. A product of which, is Jessicka (Elske). After years of nameless abuse of her family and neighbors, Jessicka has been reduced to something less than human. She's more of a family pet than she is a true member of the family. Jessicka is the tragic character brought up from her surroundings, and suddenly finds her opportunity for revenge.

On the last day of the 2008 B Movie Celebration a new independent film had its world premiere. The Writer/Director of The Trek, Lola Wallace, was anxious about how the near capacity crowd in the Johnson County History Museum’s auditorium would react to her new movie. Almost from the start it was apparent that there was something different about this film. The basic story is one that has been told before of hikers in the woods running into trouble, but there is more to The Trek than just that and the audience could tell...

When Tony asked me to moderate a panel on The Lair for at the Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors, I was thrilled. I participated in a bunch of panels at Gaylaxicon a couple years ago and had a ball because, let’s face it, I’m a bit of a ham. So the opportunity to be on a panel at a Fango con was an automatic, “Yes!”
As the date approached, I started to feel more and more nervous. I wondered if anyone would actually show up for this panel. I mean, The Lair is a fun show, but it’s on a Pay-Per-View network, and I would guess that ninety percent of its audience is more camp enthusiast than horror fanatic. Would there be any fans of The Lair actually attending the con? And more importantly, would there be any Glbt horror fans attending the con? Okay, yes, obviously...

Fango heard from Noah Segan, the busy genre actor who will soon be seen in Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel’s Deadgirl, Ti West’s Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever and Deon Taylor’s Chain Letter, updating us about Someone’S Knocking At The Door, which he stars in and produced. We also got some new exclusive pics and a festival poster for the Chad Ferrin-directed feature, which we first told you about here; you can see ’em below.
“We are presently about to premiere Someone’S Knocking in competition at Amsterdam’s Imagine festival, where two of Chad’s other films have premiered,” Segan (first photo) tells us. “It is a fantastic relationship to maintain, and Deadgirl will play there as well. We are very shortly going to announce an amazing domestic fest premiere for Someone’S Knocking, at a very well-regarded and hip program here on the West Coast.

Filmmaker/makeup FX artist Tom Devlin gave Fango the scoop that his latest movie The Trek will be hitting DVD April 11 from Plan 10 Pictures, and gave us a first look at the cover art (see below). The survival-horror opus is the third collaboration between Devlin (serving as writer/producer/FX supervisor) and Lola Wallace (director/writer/editor) after Legend Of The Sandsquatch and Ghoulde Creek.
The Trek stars Erin Fleming and Brett Hundley as Kim and Keith Russell, newlyweds who are terrorized during their honeymoon trip into the mountains by a group of malformed savages. The cast also includes Devlin himself, John Karyus and Splatter Disco’s Trent Haaga, with a brief appearance by Die You Zombie Bastards! director Caleb Emerson. On the unrated disc, the enhanced widescreen transfer will be accompanied by:
• Audio commentary by Wallace, Devlin, Fleming, Hundley and Karyus • Audio commentary by Wallace, Devlin, director of photography...

Inspired by watching endless behind the scenes stuff about the filming of Easy Rider and The Hills Have Eyes, director Lola Wallace shot The Trek in a total of just five days and with no script. Say What? And it looks this well done? Well, you know what they say, a good trailer can sell anything, but there's an undeniable creative energy here that I'm drawn to. Oh yeah, and the make-up FX are pretty well done too.
When Keith and Kim Russell head into the mountains on an adventure packed honeymoon, they find much more action than they were expecting. When the newlyweds stumble upon a pair of cave dwelling savages, their romantic getaway quickly becomes a tragic nightmare as each couple tests the limits of how far they are willing to go in order to protect the ones that they love.
