The massive success of a few Disney films has led to their characters and storylines being further explored in fan-favorite TV shows. The latest film to earn a series inspired by its characters is Pixar's Inside Out, with the miniseries Dream Productions premiering later this year. Though the act of rebooting or producing sequel films and series based on acclaimed films feels like a habit established in recent years, Disney has been transforming their films into series for decades.
Shows like Lilo & Stitch: The Series, Timon & Pumbaa, and Aladdin aired on TV in the late '90s and early 2000s, and are still enjoyed by audiences to this day. When audiences connect with certain characters right away, like Baymax or Olaf, it only makes sense to produce a follow-up series that explores entertaining adventures outside the main narrative of their originating films. Pixar's Win or Lose is the studio's most exciting upcoming project, but the TV series is also under a lot of pressure to succeed. Even with 23 Academy Award wins and box office record-breaking hits like Inside Out 2 under its belt, Pixar is still navigating an uneven path forward with Disney. Acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 2006, right around the time the original Cars movie hit the big screen, Pixar has managed to produce original content over the last two decades or so. However, there's no denying the recent shift in the animation studio's trajectory.
For every Turning Red and Elemental, Pixar has an Incredibles 2, Toy Story 4, and Inside Out 2 at the ready. Plus, it's those franchise-spawning sequels that have earned Pixar its biggest box office draws. Both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar have leaned harder into sequels and established IP in recent years,...

“Win or Lose,” Pixar’s first original, long-form series for Disney+, was previewed at 2022’s D23 and again last summer at the Annecy International Animation Festival in France. And then … crickets.
Well, at Friday night’s D23 presentation, we got the release date — December 6 — for “Win or Lose,” and they showed a new trailer, which you can watch below.

The series, created by Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates — story artists who worked on “Toy Story 4” — centers around a middle school softball game. (Go Pickles!) Each episode is told from a different perspective – it could be one of the kids, it could be the umpire, it could be one of the kids’ parents like it was in the episode that was screened at Annecy last year.

Up — at least its famously emotional initial act – remains one of the high water marks (a lot of that water is tears shed at the "married life" segment) for Pixar. And the company has not been shy about spinning it off, particularly for the series Dug Days on Disney+ focused on the loveable talking pooch. But Dug (Bob Peterson) and owner Carl Fredricksen are back on the big screen for new short film Carl's Date, which will play attached to the studio's new feature film Elemental this week. Check out trailer…

Up's Carl gets ready for a date in a bittersweet trailer for a new Pixar short. Originally intended to be included as the final entry in Pixar's 2021 Dug Days Disney+ series of shorts, the film's release date was delayed until 2023 to serve as Elemental's opening short film. In his final posthumous role, Ed Asner returns as Carl as he seeks to start a new chapter of his life with another woman.
Pixar's bittersweet trailer for Carl's Date shows the titular widower preparing for a date.
Assisted by the talking dog Dug, Carl shows nerves as he readies for a first date, something he has never truly done in his life as he was with his deceased wife since childhood. Carl practices dancing, struggles to decide on a perfect gift, and tests new cologne much to the displeasure of Dug's sensitive nose.

"I don't know how to date!" Ha! Carl is trying his hand at love again. Pixar has unveiled a quick 30-second trailer for their new short film titled Carl's Date, bringing back the two beloved characters from Pixar's Up. This short film also brings back the classic Pixar tradition of showing a new short film in front of their new movie. This one is playing in front of Pixar's Elemental, which opens in theaters nationwide starting this weekend (watch the main trailer). Carl's Date is basically a new episode of the Disney+ series "Dug Days", following old-timer Carl and his doggie Dug, the golden retriever (who now always wears his collar which turns his thoughts into spoken English). In this short, he tries to figure out how to go on a date. "Oh boy, oh boy... here's a special treat" for any & all Pixar fans. I adore these two! Still amusing to watch them.

Every Pixar movie since 2019 has been lacking one of the studio's trademarks, but it's finally returning in 2023's Elemental. The new movie from the animation studio looks to be one of its most original yet. As Pixar is the gold standard of animation, there's a level of quality expected with every one of its releases, but that quality has waned in recent years. Whether it's the underwhelming prequel spin-off, Lightyear, or the quickly forgotten Luca, Pixar's movies over the past few years have been fine but totally inconsistent, and they don't stack up with the studio's classics.
Pixar was known for including shorts before every movie, but the studio stopped making them in 2019. There's no knowing why Pixar's consistency has dropped in the past few years, but the releases being stripped of their opening shorts didn't help. The short film before the main event essentially acted as an opening act,...

A new Pixar short film will accompany Elemental in theaters this June, premiering just before the movie begins. Many theatrical movies in Pixar's past have featured short films that play prior to the movie starting. However, the studio hasn't had a short in front of their films since Incredibles 2 in 2018, which featured the premiere of Bao.
According to a report from The Wrap, Elemental will feature the short film Carl's Date, which will play ahead of the film during its theatrical run. Carl's Date will bring viewers back to the world of Up, showing the film's protagonist, Carl, after the events of the film, preparing for his first date since his wife Ellie died. The short will feature Ed Asner returning as Carl, having recorded his lines prior to his death in 2021.

While visiting Pixar Studios in Emeryville, California, for a behind-the-scenes look at Elemental, the studio’s upcoming animated epic, we learned that the Pixar short Carl’s Date would play ahead of the new film. Carl’s Date hails from the creators of Dug Days, the television series of shorts produced by Pixar Animation Studios for the Disney+ streaming service. Bob Peterson directs Carl’s Date, a standalone short featuring the cantankerous balloon enthusiast and his energetic golden retriever, Dug, from 2009’s Up.
Carl’s Date centers on Carl and Dug living together and Dug advising the older man when Carl gets invited on his first date. The late Ed Asner voices Carl as one of his final performances. For many years, it was customary that every new theatrical release from Pixar would include a short film as an opener for the film, usually sharing a similar tone or thematic idea with the feature film. The last one was 2018's "Bao," which eventually won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film and led to director Domee Shi helming her first feature, the breakout hit "Turning Red." Sadly, the tradition came to an end with the release of "Toy Story 4" in 2019, and if we're being honest, we've been missing it. Sure, Disney+ has been a fantastic outlet for fantastic short films out of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation studios, but there was always something magical about seeing a Pixar short before a feature — a cinematic appetizer to help the real world drift away and allow audiences to fully immerse themselves into a new, animated world.

Ready to cry your eyes out again? Because there’s a new “Up” short film from Pixar that should do the trick.
“Carl’s Date,” a short film produced after the series of “Up”-based shorts called “Dug Days” that premiered on Disney+ in 2021, will get the big screen treatment this June. The short is set to appear before “Elemental,” the new Pixar feature from Peter Sohn (who partially inspired the character of Russell in “Up”), and features Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) get ready for his first date since Ellie passed away. It is deeply touching and hilarious and appropriate as a preamble for “Elemental,” which focuses on the love story between two very opposite characters – one made of fire and the other made of water.

Disney’s upcoming short, a continuation of Up, will make one of the original film’s saddest moments even more important. While Disney and Pixar are masters at churning out evocative movies and short films that tug at the heartstrings, few are as wrenching as Up. The film’s ability to explore grief and, by proxy, allow viewers to do the same in a temporary setting is very special, such that the movie can help others prepare for a loss or cope with one they’ve already experienced. Now, it’s equally important to examine how the studio’s Dug Days short films explore the lifelong effects of grief and growth.
Up depicts Carl (Edward Asner) as he tries to live out his wife’s dream after her death, chronicling how he copes with the loss after Up opens with a heartbreaking opening moment showing the ups and downs of their life together.

Just in time for Valentine's Day, Carl from "Up" is trying his hand at modern dating in the upcoming Disney+ short film "Dug Days: Carl's Date," premiering on the streamer on Feb. 10. The short, which is part of the "Dug Days" animated series, will find Carl going on his first date since the death of his beloved wife, Ellie.
In addition to "Carl's Date" representing a big - and sure to be emotional - step forward for the widower, it also marks Disney's first return to the "Up" universe since Ed Asner, the voice of Carl, died at age 91 in August 2021. At this time, it's unclear if Asner recorded the voicework for the short before his death or if the role of Carl has been recast. Popsugar reached out to Disney+ for comment on casting information for the short but did not receive an immediate response.

I Am Groot was a surprising addition to Marvel Studios’ line-up, but a welcome one. A series of five shorts, each of which was brought to life by breath-taking CGI artistry; the stories were low-stake and focused on the Guardians of the Galaxy member during his younger years, after the events of the first film.
The release of these shorts, which have very clearly been defined as separate entities on Disney+ rather than an ongoing show, has indicated that Marvel is willing to get a little riskier when it comes to the formats in which they tell their stories. There’s surely a place for short films within the context of the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe. What narrative opportunities could occur thanks to the addition of this platform, and are there any benefits to reviving these mini-movies?

So cuteee!!! Disney has revealed an official trailer for Ice Age: Scrat Tales, their spin-off series focusing on the hapless saber-toothed squirrel and his family. This is similar to the Pixar spin-off Disney series Dug Days, focusing on the lovable doggo from that movie. We all know Scrat as he has been in numerous short films / intros to various Blue Sky Ice Age movies over the last two decades. Now he has his own series on Disney+! Even though he is originally a creation of Blue Sky Studios, which shut down after Disney bought Fox (which included Blue Sky). "Discover the nuttiness of parenthood." Ice Age: Scrat Tales features six all-new animated shorts starring Scrat, who experiences the ups and downs of fatherhood. It looks like exactly what you'd expect from this - more of the same Scrat humor now with a child thrown into the mix. Have fun. Here's...

Netflix’s investment in animation has paid off in a big way, as the streamer picked up a whopping 52 nominations at the 49th Annie Awards. Following behind is Disney, which received 29 bids between its film and TV projects.
Taking place on Feb. 26, 2022 at UCLA’s Royce Hall and presented by the Los Angeles branch of the International Animated Film Association, the Annie Awards recognize excellence in cinema and television.
Netflix picked up nine nominations for “Arcane,” its series based on Riot Games’ online multiplayer game “League of Legends.” The hit film from Sony Pictures Animation “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” earned eight nods, and Netflix’s own limited series “Maya and the Three,” directed by Jorge Gutierrez, has seven.
While Disney lagged behind Netflix for total nominations, the studio’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” led all content with 10 nominations, followed by its studio sibling “Encanto,” which picked up nine.

To infinity and beyond! Disney and Pixar have debuted the action-packed first trailer for “Lightyear,” the upcoming “Toy Story” prequel that tells the origin story of the real Buzz Lightyear. Tim Allen famously voiced Buzz in the four “Toy Story” movies, but it’s Captain America himself, Chris Evans, that’s taking on the role of Buzz in “Lightyear.”
The official synopsis from Disney reads: “The sci-fi action-adventure presents the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear — the hero who inspired the toy — introducing the legendary Space Ranger who would win generations of fans.”
“The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life,” Evans said in a statement accompanying the first trailer release. “Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the...

This week Pixar debuts “Dug Days” on Disney+: five animated shorts reuniting “Up’s” grumpy widower Carl with his excitable Golden Retriever, Dug, who can talk with a voice-activated collar. It’s a warm and funny series of misadventures for Dug (voiced by creator/director Bob Peterson), made all the more noteworthy as a result of last week’s passing of 91-year-old Ed Asner. He voiced Carl with his typical gruff exterior to hide a more affable nature. Yet it’s especially sweet to see Asner end his career on a high note in “Dug Days,” with Carl settling into a more relaxed comfort zone.
“Carl is laid back and at peace,” Peterson said. “You can tell the way he stands and the fact that he doesn’t wear his jacket; he’s doing woodworking now. I think his adventure was successful.”
But while Carl is content to relax...

Through much of 2021, streaming service Disney+ has been Marvel’s domain. That’ll happen when you premiere WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and What If…? within eight months of one another. With the Disney+ list of new releases for September 2021, however, Disney’s other big franchise is striking back.
Star Wars: Visions is set to premiere all seven installments on Wednesday, September 22. This project is a collection of 7 animated short films all from renowned Japanese studios. As you can see by this first teaser, it could be rad. These seven shorts should also make the wait for The Mandalorian season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett even easier.
While Marvel’s What If…? continues on this month, the only other major Disney+ original to premiere in September is Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. As you might be able to guess from the name, this is a reboot of the sitcom Doogie Howser,...

Hollywood is mourning the loss of Ed Asner on Sunday, reflecting on a career that not only left a mark in television and animation but also in the history of Hollywood labor.
In his illustrious career, Asner won seven Emmys, five of them for his iconic performance as Lou Grant on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and the spinoff “Lou Grant.” For younger fans, he was known for playing the voices of Hudson on the Disney cult classic “Gargoyles” and Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar Oscar winner “Up,” as well as Santa Claus in the Will Ferrell comedy “Elf” and other Christmas movies and specials.
But along with this, Asner served as president of the Screen Actors Guild during its pivotal strike in 1980, which led to a dramatic 32% increase in minimum salaries. His outspoken activism as a democratic socialist led to clashes with right-wing actors in Hollywood, including Charlton Heston,...

Not a single person with a soul walked away from the 2009 Pixar movie "Up" without falling head over heels for Dug, the lovable talking dog with a penchant for squirrel animosity and jokes ("It is funny because the squirrel gets dead!").
