“The Wonder Years” has been canceled at ABC after two seasons, Variety has confirmed.
Based on the 1988 series of the same name, the reimagined show followed a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, through the point of view of imaginative 12-year-old Dean. He was joined among the cast by Elisha “Ej” Williams as Dean Williams, Dulé Hill as Bill Williams, Saycon Sengbloh as Lillian Williams, Laura Kariuki as Kim Williams, Julian Lerner as Brad Hitman, Amari O’Neil as Cory Long and Milan Ray as Keisa Clemmons.

ABC will not be moving forward with drama pilot Criminal Nature, from Rashad Raisani, 20th Television and A+E Studios.
Criminal Nature was one of two remaining “second cycle” ABC pilots that had not heard about their fates, along with fellow drama The Company You Keep, starring and executive produced by This Is Us alum Milo Ventimiglia. I hear the latter continues to look promising for a series pickup. Like drama pilot Will Trent, which was picked up to series this month. The Company You Keep also had started a writers room in anticipation of a series order. In another encouraging sign, The Company You Keep also has brought on seasoned writer-producer Phil Klemmer as co-showrunner, I hear.
2022 ABC Pilots & Series Orders
Starring Michaela McManus, Parker Young and Ian Duff and written by Raisani, Criminal Nature (fka Untitled National Parks Project) was a soapy procedural set in the stunning world of America’s great outdoors.

ABC has opted not to pick up the drama pilot “Criminal Nature” to series.
This is now the second time the project has been passed over at the broadcast network. A different iteration of the pilot with a different creative team — which included Kevin Costner as co-writer — was in the works at ABC in 2021 before being axed in July.
The new version, which had been titled “Criminal Nature,” was part of ABC’s 2022 pilot season slate. It was described as a soapy procedural set in the stunning world of America’s great outdoors. The story revolved around the tangled, messy lives of the agents who work for the Investigative Services Branch (Isb) — an elite law enforcement unit responsible for solving all serious crimes that occur in our country’s 81,000 square miles of protected land.

The drama series “Will Trent” has officially been ordered at ABC, Variety has learned.
The show was originally ordered to pilot at ABC in February as past of the broadcaster’s 2022 pilot season slate. The show will debut at midseason for ABC during the 2022-2023 broadcast season.
Based on Karin Slaughter’s “Will Trent” novel series, the show follows Special Agent Will Trent (Ramón Rodríguez) of the Georgia Bureau of Investigations (Gbi). Trent was abandoned at birth and endured a harsh coming-of-age in Atlanta’s overwhelmed foster care system. But now, determined to use his unique point of view to make sure no one is abandoned like he was, Will Trent has the highest clearance rate in the Gbi.
Along with Rodríguez, the show also stars Erika Christensen as Angie Polaski, Iantha Richardson as Faith Mitchell, Jake McLaughlin as Michael Ormewood, and Sonja Sohn as Amanda Wagner.

ABC has picked up drama pilot Will Trent (working title) to series for a midseason launch. Will Trent, starring Ramón Rodríguez, is one of four 2022 ABC drama pilots whose production was targeted for off-cycle and the first of the bunch to land a series order.
Will Trent emerged as an early front-runner in what ABC calls “second cycle” as part of its year-round development strategy. There was a small hiccup in the final stretch, which I hear was over the nature of storytelling, but the pilot remained on track for a pickup. In anticipation of a series order, writers have been working on scripts for the past three weeks. Decision on ABC’s other strong second cycle drama contender, The Company You Keep starring Milo Ventimiglia, has not been made yet. The network last month passed on the untitled therapist drama pilot written by Kay Oyegun.

ABC has opted not to move forward with two of its remaining pilots.
The single-camera comedy “The Son-in-Law” and an untitled drama series from Kay Oyegun have both been scrapped at the broadcast network. Both were picked up as part of ABC’s initial pilot season slate and were in contention for midseason orders as part of ABC’s year-round development cycle. Both were also produced by 20th Television.
With the news, ABC has now only ordered one new comedy to series for the 2022-2023 broadcast season. That is the single-cam “Not Dead Yet” starring Gina Rodriguez, which was ordered to series in May.
On the drama side, ABC is still considering the espionage series “The Company You Keep” starring Milo Ventimiglia as well as “Will Trent,” based on the novel series by Karin Slaughter.

It’s no secret the TV landscape is changing. In fact, it’s all TV journalists can talk about — the amount of content and the endless way to consume it. But sometimes, it’s about going back to where it all started: broadcast TV.
“I think it’s about the accessibility. If you have rabbit ears on TV, you can watch broadcast,” says Milo Ventimiglia, who has had great success through his career, most recently leading six seasons of “This Is Us,” which wrapped its final season in May.
“The good thing about broadcast TV is it’s literally for everybody. Maybe you can’t dive deep into some real-life situations and subject matters that we all understand are happening because of standards and practices, but at the same time, you can still tell great stories and the quality can still be high,” the actor told Variety.
Ventimiglia knows it firsthand.

L.A. Law not moving forward at ABC was one of the surprises of this pilot season.
ABC boss Craig Erwich told Deadline that “unfortunately the pilot just did not come together as we had hoped it would.”
ABC Upfront 2022: Deadline’s Complete Coverage
The reboot, which was headlined by Blair Underwood, reprising his role as attorney Jonathan Rollins, had a high bar to hit with big expectations. The original series’ Corbin Bernsen also reprised his role as Arnie Becker in the pilot alongside Hari Nef, Toks Olagundoye, Ian Duff, John Harlan Kim and Juliana Harkavey, and Kacey Rohl.
The pilot was written by Marc Guggenheim and Ubah Mohamed and directed by Anthony Hemingway.
It followed the law firm of McKenzie Brackman — now named Becker Rollins — as it reinvented itself as a litigation firm specializing in only the most high-profile, boundary-pushing and incendiary cases.

At ABC, the The Rookie planted spinoff starring Niecy Nash and Alaska Daily News, starring Hilary Swank, remain a lock. The L.A. Law sequel has faded but is not dead. Speaking of dead, comedy pilot Not Dead Yet, starring Gina Rodriguez, continues to be hot. Josep has not gotten a pass yet but its chances remain slim. We are 10 days away from the start of the traditional upfront week and a day into the new series pickup window, which kicked off yesterday with NBC’s order to the Quantum Leap pilot. Getting intel on broadcast pilots is harder than ever as that marketplace has contracted over the last five years but here is what I hear as we head into pre-upfront week. You can use for reference the Early Pilot Buzz report Deadline ran on Monday.
At ABC, the The Rookie planted spinoff starring Niecy Nash and the Alaska project drama pilot, starring Hilary Swank, remain very strong contenders, with the L.A. Law sequel, headlined by Blair Underwood, getting some traction, mostly due to the attractive marketing opportunities its iconic IP presents. Comedy pilot Not Dead Yet, starring Gina Rodrigues, also has been gaining some support at the network, I hear.
Still not a lot of clarity at CBS. Firefighter drama Cal Fire continues to look like a frontrunner. Beyond that, cop drama East New York also is said to be solid, with the Mother & Son legal drama believed to in the mix too. The Early Edition reboot has cooled off a bit, while True Lies continues to divide opinions but sources see a possible path to the air based on its popular IP and potentially advantageous dealmaking.
On the comedy side, presentation Hug Machine and pilot Rust Belt News continue to garner buzz.
2022 CBS Pilots & Series Orders
NBC yesterday became the first network to pick up a pilot to series, giving a series order to Quantum Leap, which had been considered a strong contender and was the only drama pilot in consideration for fall. As Deadline reported, the pilot is expected to undergo some reshoots and is eyed for the post-Voice slot. There had been chatter that NBC may expedite post-production on its other drama pilots that are in advanced stages Unbroken and Blank Slate, for fall consideration, but that does not appear to be the case. The other ordered NBC drama pilots are being produced off-cycle.
NBC’s two comedy pilots, Lopez vs. Lopez and Hungry, remain neck and neck, with Lopez vs. Lopez, a collaboration between George Lopez and his daughter, still believed to have a slight edge.
2022 NBC Pilots & Series Orders
Fox
Two projects that had been put on a script-to-series track, John Eisendrath’s procedural drama Alert and Steve Yockey’s meteorologist comedy Cindy Snow, continue to build momentum and look likely to go to series, The network’s only pilot ordered during the 2022 pilot window this year, an Untitled Michelle Nader comedy presentation, also remains a strong contender for a series pickup.
The CW’s three pilots this season — all based on underlying IP — remain strong contenders as the cuts start to come in: Supernatural prequel The Winchesters, Walker origin story Walker: Independence and Gotham Knights. Because of their pedigree, solid execution and the fact that this is half the number of pilots the CW has normally picked up over the past decade, I hear there is a possibility for all of them to go to series.
As we reported earlier this week, Walker: Independence is described as a sprawling Western, The Winchesters as the strongest attempt at a Supernatural spinoff to date, and Gotham Kings as another solid DC pilot from Berlanti Prods., which also has plenty of easter eggs to attract Batman fans. (Gotham Kings‘ prospects also were improved significantly by the recent cancellations of Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow.)
So far, it does not look that Nexstar’s pending acquisition of a majority stake in the CW would close before the upfronts but even if that does not happen, the network remains disciplined in its choices with fewer scripted series expected to be on deck for next season than in recent years.

Consider Mark-Paul Gosselaar one of the Found: The mixed-ish actor has joined Shanola Hampton in the aforementioned NBC drama pilot, our sister site Deadline reports.
The project is based on the fact that “in any given year, more than 600,000 people are reported missing in the U.S. More than half that number are people of color that the country seems to forget about,” per the official logline. Public relations specialist Gabi (Hampton) “was once herself one of those forgotten ones — and her crisis management team now make sure there is always someone looking out for the forgotten missing people. But unbeknownst to anyone,...

Decades ago, the pageantry of the broadcast upfront presentations culminated in the shows’ big attraction — each network unveiling their fall schedule to advertisers. The dissemination of information in the era of the Internet took away the shock and awe of the reveals as the schedules are now announced in advance, while the proliferation of broadband, which allows people to watch TV on their own time, took away the grids’ relevance as an increasing portion of viewing of broadcast shows comes from digital platforms.
Add to that the fact that broadcast networks have become a small portion of media congloms’ portfolio pitch to advertisers and that the development cycle has shifted post-pandemic, with only a portion of this year’s pilots in upfront consideration, and the unveiling of a fall schedule at the May 2022 presentations does not have the importance and urgency it once did.

During the “This Is Us” Season 2 finale, Kate (Chrissy Metz) dreamed of her parents, Jack Pearson (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca Pearson (Mandy Moore), growing old together and renewing their vows. It was the only time thus far that fans saw Ventimiglia in old-age makeup, playing a 73-year-old Jack.
That’s not to say that it couldn’t happen again during the NBC drama’s final season — but Ventimiglia won’t confirm nor deny.
“I think toward the end, we’re going to see all the sides of Jack. I think we’re going to understand who he was to his kids, understand who he was to his wife,” he tells Variety. “The show was so front-heavy with Jack. Now, we’ve really invested in the stories of the kids and Rebecca. I think that’s where it’s ultimately leading, those loops closing. We already know Jack. He’ll be there,...

ABC is heading off into the national parks, only this time without Kevin Costner. The Disney-owned network has handed a pilot order to its untitled national parks project, which comes from A+E Studios.
Rashad Raisani, an exec producer on Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star, is writing and exec producing a brand new take. The news comes after the network passed on the Costner co-penned and exec produced version in July 2021.
2022 ABC Pilots & Series Orders
The series is a “soapy” procedural set in the world of national parks. It revolves around the tangled, messy lives of the agents who work for the Isb — an elite law-enforcement unit responsible for solving all serious crimes that occur in our country’s 81,000 square miles of protected land.
Raisani, who began his career on USA Network’s Burn Notice, where he rose from staff writer to co-exec producer, will exec produce with A+E Studios’ Barry Jossen and Tana Jamieson.

With the conclusion of This Is Us in sight, the cast is moving on to new projects.
Chris Sullivan, who has been a part of the NBC juggernaut since the beginning, has been tapped as the lead of ABC's new comedy pilot, The Son in Law.
Deadline first reported the news, revealing that Sullivan will play Jake, a salt-of-the-earth man who finds himself seeking the approval of his new "fiancée Asha’s sophisticated parents, even as he is a difficult-to-impress father-in-law to his daughter’s longtime boyfriend."
"Sullivan’s Jake, divorced, with one 21-year-old daughter, never thought he would love again, until Asha came along," Deadline adds of the show.
"The problem is that Jake, a hard-working plumbing contractor, is solidly middle class, while Asha hails from the equivalent of uber-wealthy South Asian royalty."
"Jake wants to marry Asha, and while he still needs to ask her father for his blessing,...

Exclusive: This Is Us star Chris Sullivan has been tapped as the lead of ABC’s single-camera comedy pilot The Son in Law, from 20th Century Television.
As is always the case with a hugely popular broadcast series coming to an end, the cast of NBC’s This Is Us has been in demand this development cycle. Sullivan is the second actor to sign on for a pilot, joining Milo Ventimiglia, who headlines ABC drama The Company You Keep, a project he’d developed through his company Divide Pictures. Both The Son in Law and The Company You Keep come from This Is Us studio 20th Television, which is an ABC corporate sibling.
ABC also went after another This Is Us star for the lead in a pilot, but things did not work out in that case. Meanwhile, Justin Hartley is attached to CBS’ The Never Game, which has a...
