" Downsizing " was Alexander Payne's most expensive project to date costing somewhere between $65m and $90m. In it's opening weekend, it took less than $9m at the US box-office.

An early scene, after Matt Damon wakes up in Christopher Waltz's apartment, has Christopher giving a small life lesson to Damon. Christopher's cigar ash length changes several times, and not in correct order. Obviously, several versions of the same scene were shot and edited back together with no consideration to the changes in his cigar.
