It’s an experiment that shouldn’t work. A feature film shot entirely through the point of view of a ghost who watches a family of four move into a large suburban home and over time witnesses their most intimate and disturbing moments, as a supernatural mystery begins to bubble beneath the surface.
Director Steven Soderbergh, better than anyone, laid out why a fully Pov camera doesn’t work for narrative storytelling when discussing first-person VR movies back in 2022. Said Soderbergh, “[That] there’s no Pov and reverse angle on a character who’s experiencing this is hugely limiting. That is how we engage with visual stories, is to watch the expressions of the characters so that we can read the emotions of what we’re experiencing.”
But two years later, Soderbergh did make it work, and while he was a guest on this week’s episode of IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast,...

When it comes to Oscar nominations, the Academy frequently gets it wrong. I'm not going to waste too much time regurgitating all the ways that awards voters have bungled things, because I think it's common knowledge at this point that more often than not, the Oscars aren't really about rewarding the most deserving art of the year. Instead, movies that land nominations (and wins) often do so thanks to heavy campaign work performed by studios and PR folks. Recency bias is also a huge issue — films that are shown to voters at the end of the year tend to get all the glory, while movies released earlier get overlooked. On top of that, anonymous voters will consistently confess that more often than not, they tend to vote for films their friends worked on rather than stuff that's actually deserving merit. With all that in mind, I try not to let Oscar snubs get me down.

Henry Cavill’s Superman replacement, David Corenswet, has appeared in quite a few interesting roles before his Dcu entry. One of these roles was in the Netflix political drama, House of Cards, which starred Kevin Spacey. By the time Corenswet made his only appearance in the penultimate episode, Spacey was fired from the show after his legal troubles.

Corenswet’s character in the series was not fond of Spacey’s character at all. The same would’ve happened in DC if their characters were to meet. While Corenswet plays the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman, Spacey played villain Lex Luthor in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns.

Jomo Fray can pinpoint the day when the bold idea of “first-person perspective” truly clicked.
The Brooklyn-based cinematographer and his director, RaMell Ross, had spent months discussing, studying, and experimenting for the filming of “Nickel Boys.” Based on Colson Whitehead’s novel, the movie is shot almost entirely through the eyes of its main characters, Elwood and Turner (played by Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson), two young Black men at an inhumane reform school in Florida.
The eureka moment came during a scene when Elwood’s grandmother (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor) visits the school to deliver bad news to her grandson. “I was the camera operator for that scene,” said Fray. “And as she was building up the courage to tell Elwood something devastating, I looked away. I find it very difficult to look a person in the eyes when I know they’re telling me something that’s difficult for them.

David Corenswet—tall, striking, with a smile that could thaw the iciest of hearts—is on the cusp of donning the iconic red boots of Superman. The actor is stepping into a role that many actors would give an arm and a leg for—Clark Kent. And while countless renditions of this character have graced the screen, Corenswet’s take, under the sharp eye of James Gunn and Peter Safran, promises something unique.
Gone are the brooding shadows and grim intensity; the new Superman is a beacon of hope, compassion, and… a whole lot of charm.

Mikey Madison has certainly been rising through the ranks of Hollywood. With her noteworthy role being in 2022’s Scream, she has come a long way since, starring alongside Natalie Portman in Lady in the Lake. Most recently, she was a part of Anora, a film that has gotten much buzz but has certainly turned the heads of critics.

Her performance as the titular character was especially praised, embodying the essence of a s*x worker in ways that are rarely seen in the industry. Choosing to be more realistic than provocative with her acting, it would seem that the actress did some very thorough research to make sure she did justice to her character.

Moses Ingram first came to viewers’ attention as Jolene, the best friend of Anya Taylor-Joy’s character in The Queen’s Gambit, a role that earned Ingram an Emmy nomination. After parts in Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Tragedy of Macbeth and Ambulance, the Baltimore native returned to home turf for a starring role on Alma Har’el’s Lady in the Lake, a whodunit about a Jewish housewife in the 1960s, played by the show’s exec producer Natalie Portman, who risks everything to become an investigative journalist trying to solve the death of Cleo Johnson, played by Ingram. The limited series that pushes all boundaries when it comes to genre and tone is a wild showcase for Ingram, who gets to demonstrate every skill she has as an actress. But for the 30-year-old, the highlight of the project was returning to the place her ambitions were born. “I did a lot of dreaming in Baltimore.

Stephen King shares his praise for a new Apple TV+ thriller, matching the audience's sentiment. Apple TV+ has been on a run of consistently releasing new original shows over the past few years, with the genre frequently falling into the thriller category. Oftentimes, those thrillers will have a sci-bent, with Silo, Dark Matter, and Severance. But the preference for tense stories also extends beyond the science fiction realm.
Lady in the Lake, led by Natalie Portman, was a murder mystery presented as a thriller. The same is true for The Crowded Room, starring Tom Holland and Amanda Seyfried, which was a crime drama that often veered into the direction of a paranoid and shaky narrative with an unreliable protagonist at the center. One of the newest thrillers from the streamer continues the trend, including another big actor, though responses have been split.

Following a two-hour masterclass at the Cairo Film Festival, Gaspar Noé spoke with Variety about future genres he’d like to tackle: “The main film genres that really would interest me for a future project are documentary, war film, and horror. Probably I should even try to mix those three genres. I also would like to do a movie with young children, or a movie for children.”
The Argentinian director of “Irreversible” (2002) and “Vortex” (2021) had earlier answered questions from British-Iranian critic Mo Abdi, telling the audience of his sold out event: “Kids are like small adults. When we are kids we are in danger. You are exposed to everything. I’m very attached to kids in life, though I don’t have kids. The relationship you have with kids is direct and playful. After coming face-to-face with the Ghost With the Most in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Jenna Ortega will deal with another dead guy alongside Natalie Portman in Cathy Yan‘s upcoming film The Gallerist. Ortega and Portman are circling the project, which finds the Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn helmer back in the director’s chair. In addition to directing the picture, Yan co-wrote the screenplay with James Pedersen. In addition to her starring role, Portman produces the film alongside Jonathan King, Ash Sarohia, Tom McCarthy, Rae Baron, Sophie Mas, and Zola Elgart Glassman.
Details about The Gallerist are scarce. Still, Deadline says the film focuses on a desperate gallerist who conspires to sell a dead guy at Art Basel Miami. If Portman and Ortega join the movie, Yan’s next project could become one of the hottest tickets in Tinsel Town.

With the arrival of volumes four and five of Netflix's hugely popular Unsolved Mysteries after a two-year hiatus, true-crime-hungry fans are looking forward to a new set of unexplained deaths or perplexing disappearances to get their teeth into. The original Unsolved Mysteries show, which ran from 1988 to 2010, famously had a hand in solving hundreds of the cases it featured, naturally raising the question of whether, since its reboot under Netflix's banner in 2020, the new show has had a similar impact.
Solving cases takes time, effort, and often the public's cooperation. Five volumes and four years after the reboot, Unsolved Mysteries has yet to solve as many cases as the original, but there remains plenty of time to do so. The new Netflix show's time will come, but to date, there's just one case the series can justifiably claim to have brought to a close, while a couple more have been significantly impacted.

In Rob Reiner's classic 80s rom-com When Harry Met Sally, there's a moment where Billy Crystal's Harry asks Meg Ryan's Sally, "Don't you have a dark side?" And whilst in that film, as in so many others over the years, that question serves as the set-up for a Crystal comic zinger, in Sarah Thorp's upcoming Apple TV+ psychological thriller Before, it looks like we'll be seeing the iconic funnyman's own dark side for the first time. Here, Crystal plays Eli, a grieving child psychiatrist who develops an inexplicable bond with troubled patient Noah (Jacobi Jupe) — and if the first trailer's anything to go by, then it looks like things may be about to take a turn for the supernatural in Crystal's dramatic lead debut. Check it out:

It takes a while to realize that the hero of Peacock’s new crime dramedy Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist isn’t, in fact, any of the series’ convoy of flamboyant gangsters, hoodlums and petty criminals but, rather, the city of Atlanta. And that the titular heist, despite the stated financial value, is really one of prestige and global recognition
Or perhaps the hero of Fight Night is Kevin Hart’s Chicken Man, not because he’s a character of virtue or ingenuity, but because Chicken Man represents Atlanta — a scrapper with big dreams learning to overcome his disreputable past by thinking of the wider world beyond himself.
Full credit to Shaye Ogbonna, adapting the podcast of the same title, for making a comic thriller with the heart of an American Studies graduate thesis. I’m not being sarcastic! Fight Night has some actual things on its mind, plus...

Natalie Portman's Lady in the Lake won't be renewed for season 2, and there's good reason for that. Based on the book by Laura Lippman, the show follows an investigative journalist as she desperately works to solve the mystery of two separate murders after escaping an abusive relationship. The show stars Natalie Portman, Moses Ingram, Y'lan Noel, and more. Lady in the Lake ended with episode 7 on August 23 after first premiering on July 19.
Despite good reviews, the show will not be seeing its season 2. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, creator Alma Har'el explained why. Because the ending wrapped up every element of the show and ushered in a fitting conclusion, Har'el has no interest in extending the story beyond the book. She is proud of her work, proud of the "liberties" she was allowed to take, and satisfied that the story was effectively told. Check out her quote below:

Nickel Boys, RaMell Ross’ big screen interpretation of Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book The Nickel Boys, had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival’s Herzog Theatre on Friday night. Reactions among attendees, including numerous Academy members, have been strongly divided — many were impressed and deeply moved by the film, while others were left cold by it — leaving its Oscar prospects somewhat up in the air.
Ross is a tremendously gifted filmmaker who was Oscar-nominated and won a Peabody Award for his unconventional 2018 documentary feature Hale County This Morning, This Evening, which looked at the Black experience in a part of Alabama. Now just 42, he is making his narrative directorial debut with Nickel Boys, the script of which he co-wrote with his Hale County producer Joslyn Barnes.

[This story contains spoilers from the Apple TV+ limited series Lady in the Lake, including its finale, “My story.”]
The process of turning Laura Lippman’s 2019 novel Lady in the Lake into an Apple TV+ limited series began more than three years ago and involves the series’ late executive producer, Jean-Marc Vallée, who died suddenly in late December 2021.
Vallée and producing partner Nathan Ross had read the book, with Ross checking it out quickly after its release thanks to a rave review from Stephen King in The New York Times. Ross told Vallée about the novel, thinking of Natalie Portman for the role of Maddie Schwartz, and Vallée wanted Alma Har’el for the project due to her work on the film Honey Boy, Shia Labeouf’s semiautobiographical drama.
Portman too saw and was impressed by Honey Boy.
“Jean-Marc and Nathan brought me the book and told me that I should work with Alma, that she was so incredibly talented, and...

There are several great psychological dramas and whodunnit murder mysteries to check out after Apple's limited series Lady in the Lake. Based on the 2019 bestselling novel by Laura Lippman, Lady in the Lake stars Oscar winner Natalie Portman in her first-ever leading role in a television series. Portman leads an exceptional cast in Lady in the Lake which also includes rising star actress Moses Ingram, future Superman David Corenswet, and Mikey Madison, the star of this year's Palme d'Or winner Anora by Sean Baker. Lady in the Lake has opened to positive reviews, earning a 77% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The first two episodes of Lady in the Lake introduce Ingram's character Cleo Johnson, a mother and hard-working model and bartender who leaves her political aspirations behind to work for the ambiguous club owner Shell Gordon full-time. This is before her ultimate death, which is depicted in the opening scenes of the series.

It would be just like the creative team behind Sunny to use a question as the title of an episode. Lord knows the series has been nothing but one question after another.
While the endless inquiries have been aggravating, they have also been one of the series’ biggest draws.
Many science fiction shows will worry about losing audiences if they don’t spoon-feed viewers exposition. That’s certainly not the case with Sunny.

The show wisely utilized so many secrets because now that we are approaching the end, all of the other shoes can drop.
It’s been a wild, wacky adventure, but this ride is ending. Sunny is finally answering some big questions as a parting gift.
And they are doing it with all the camp and comedy that an A24 series can deliver.
