12 Strong tells the story of the first Special Forces team deployed to Afghanistan after 9/11; under the leadership of a new captain, the team must work with an Afghan warlord to take down the Taliban.
The film is based on Doug Stanton's non-fiction book "Horse Soldiers", which tells the story of CIA paramilitary officers and U.S. Special Forces personnel in addition to USAF Combat Controllers, sent to Afghanistan immediately after the 9/11 attacks. Among the events covered in the book but not in the film is the Qala-i-Jangi prison uprising, one of the bloodiest battles in the early period of the War in Afghanistan.
The most important thing you take into battle, is the reason why.
The opening scene has "September 11th, 2001, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, 7:45AM" when the child turns the TV to the news channel that reports "two planes hit the World Trade Center". Fort Campbell is in the Central Time Zone, which would make it 8:45AM New York time. The first plane hit the World Trade Center at 8:45AM, and the second plane hit at 9:03AM, both local time. If there was anything on the news at the time, it would have mentioned only the first plane, not both.
In the closing credits, a photograph of the real team is shown.
