The original Dexter was absolutely, without a doubt, one of the best shows ever created! It's a thrilling, one of a kind TV show that will keep you at the edge of your seat throughout the entire series. Michael C. Hall is perfect as Dexter and the rest of the supporting cast is just as fantastic! Yes, the ending was terrible but like Game of Thrones, Lost (or any other show with a bad final episode), a few bad episodes at the end doesn't spoil what an overall great show it was and that's what Dexter is...a GREAT show! The ending was so bad they brought back Dexter: New Blood to give it a better ending. Problem is the ending to this was even worse. I've loved having Dexter back on my tv and the show was really good overall, they just blew the ending for a second time. It's still definitely worth watching!
  • I missed Dexter so much and was so excited to hear that it was getting revived for this series. Dexter is easily one of my favorite shows of all-time and one of the few shows I can watch all the way through several times over without getting bored. Dexter: New Blood is actually pretty good until the ending. The ending to the original was pretty bad but this ending is actually worse. I'm not one of those people who thinks a bad ending ruins the whole series for me, as long as the series was good overall then I don't downgrade the entire series because of one bad show. But if there's any exception this show is it. The ending really is that bad. I'd still recommend this to any Dexter fans just to see Michael C. Hall back as Dexter. That's worth watching alone. Just be prepared to be disappointed at the ending.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Very heartbreaking ending, I was expecting more from the final. I liked the way things they left after season 8. This feels like a meaningless story to tell. I personally didn't need to know he get killed, I mean by his son. How messed up is that? We see how much Dexter loves Harrison in the original show, and it ends up like this. This should have been left alone. All the 7 stars for Michael C hall. He was excellent as always. I still cant believe it though, my favorite character is dead only by the hands of my least favorite character. Now I cant even re-watch the original show knowing this horrible ending. Writers can go f themselves.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Michael C. Hall is such a good actor. We need to appreciate him more. Nothing much happened but there's an atmosphere of foreboding and uneasiness and that reminds me very much of good old times when I got to watch Dexter without knowing I was watching one of the best shows in my life.
  • Warning: Spoilers
"Dexter: New Blood" was a sequel that I was really looking forward to.

"Finally we get the ending worthy of the series," I thought.

I'll come back to that later in this review.

As I learned in school, I would first like to mention the aspects that I liked about the sequel.

As in "Dexter", Michael C. Hall (Dexter Morgan) delivers a very good performance, which was to be expected.

But actors like Jack Alcott (Harrison Morgan), Clancy Brown (Kurt Caldwell), or Johnny Sequoyah (Audrey) also play their roles extremely well.

I also think the setting is well chosen.

Seeing Dexter in a whole new environment was refreshing after seeing him only in Miami for 8 seasons.

I also think the story and characters are well written and well thought out.

Now we come to the negative part of my review.

One point of criticism I have is that the series is a bit unrealistic here and there.

By that I mean specifically that Angela involves Dexter too much in her work.

Sure, she loves him and probably doesn't think anything about it, but the rest of the time she seems to me like a woman who takes her job very seriously.

I now come to my final and biggest criticism of the series. The end.

The ending was in my opinion, just awful and very disappointing.

Sure, the fans are finally getting an end here, but just not an edning that does Dexter justice.

Killing Dexter that way in the end was generally a stupid decision, but the way he died is even sillier when you consider that for the entirety of the previous 9 episodes, Dexter has been trying to be a good father to Harrison.

In the end, however, Dexter lets himself be shot by his own son, who is already traumatized by the murder of his mother, is mentally extremely stressed and has even developed a "dark passenger" (!) like his father.

    How does that make sense?

Now the boy has lost both his parents and even killed his father himself. So if you ask me, it's very counterproductive to the trauma he already has and inevitably leads to Harrison going down the same path as Dexter, especially since Dexter has already shown him how to silence his "dark passenger".

I will now describe the ending in bullet points that I would have wished for and which, in my opinion, would have been much better.

    • Dexter is revealed to be the "Bay Harbor Butcher".

    • Dexter struggles with this, but accepts that accepting his punishment is the right way to go

    • Dexter speaks with Harrison for the last time, telling him that the path he has taken is not the right one to deal with his problems and asking Harrison to seek help and not follow in his footsteps.

    • Dexter is taken to Miami to atone for his actions, where he meets Batista one last time and also apologizes to him sincerely

    • Dexter is now in court where he is confronted with his actions and he tells his life story in court and explains his psychological problems, from which his motive emerges

    • Dexter is sentenced to death

    • The final scene is Dexter sitting in the electronic chair, saying his last words and then being executed.
  • So much charm same as original series, I love everything they've done with it so far and blessed to see more of Micheal C. Hall! The Dark Passenger still flows ever so smooth through a new area with his rules intact. One of the best soundtracks ever that makes me so happy enticed for more to come; hell yes Dexter Morgan!
  • Warning: Spoilers
I had never watched Dexter until I binged through this particular series. I gave the series an overall rating of 8 because it hooked me into going backwards in watching Dexter from the very beginning. All I can say is that the final episode of this limited run series is disappointing to say the least and deserves a 1/10. I echo what others have already stated - what's the point? Please ShowTime, do a reshoot of the episode and magically wipe out the hideous storyline and treatment Dexter received. A large number of us will be glad to pretend "it" never happened! Heck, it'll be awesome if the son never happened!
  • Great start. I'm going to forgive and forget how the previous series ended and start anew. I refuse to let the final episode take away the awesomeness that was Dexter. I was excited they jumped right in. I'm sure we'll get lots more backstory on the way, but all I needed to know was Dexter Morgan was still in there...and he is! Even the musical score was spot on! Can't wait to see what dark Journey we're taken on this season. Bring it on Dexter!! I'm ready!
  • I was big 'Dexter' fan and when the series ended some 8 years ago, I thought it concluded well. When I read they were doing a 'Dexter' sequel, I was very dubious, believing that it would be better just to leave well enough alone. Sequels generally are disappointing.

Having watched the first episode of 'Dexter:New Blood', I have to admit that they pulled it off beautifully. Though the venue is different, it was like seeing old friends again. (so glad Debra is back as Dexter's conscience, advisor, etc). I'm happy to report that 'Dexter' is officially back up and running like a fine tuned machine. Welcome back!
  • Warning: Spoilers
If you liked the original show, you'd like this one too. I enjoyed all the episodes except for the last one. I was very disappointed to see Dexter got killed by his son Harrison. I'd hate to watch Harrison take over the role. However, for the 9 episodes and for old times sake, I'd give it a decent rating.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Dexter was a series that introduced and developed a very interesting character. Certainly not a "me too" show as it felt totally original. Dexter was a fresh anti-villain that challenged the viewer to like a very flawed man. It succeeded well with insidious criminals that Dexter's code took care of. The show may have overstayed it's freshness somewhat in the latter seasons admittedly but it really was for a lot of us in for a penny, in for a pound. It kept this viewer watching more and more because of Dexter's world constantly being threatened to come down. At first the ending felt wrong as a cheap out, but I felt the writers had taken the characters as far as could be expected and opting for the closure taken made more sense.

So, here we have a welcome chance to have something more satisfying. Dexter survived his suspected demise in the hurricane allowing him to re-invent himself. This is a good prospect. Criminals on the run historically have done this and Dexter is much more clever than most. I must say I've enjoyed the New Blood series even in it's slower moments. I missed the array of likable and not so likable supporting characters. I felt the freshness of the wholly new surroundings were a good move too. What was missing when things turned to dark was noticeable. The main villain wasn't great and the lesser ones were boring. What was played out was Dexter wrestling with his urges practically arguing with Deb's ghostly visits. This wasn't the self-assured vigilante that Dexter always was. It was a weak Dexter wrestling with everything brought to a head by the sudden appearance of his estranged son. Believing his son was just like him made Dexter different, confused and weak. You either accept this or you don't. It set the stage for his total destruction which this series finalized. Not the ending many of us would wish for yet it was becoming inevitable. Personally I wanted this to be more of the old Dexter in a different setting so I can say that while I eagerly watched I was prepared for the final scene which was somewhat disappointing. If there is more to the story I fear the son simply can't carry the water.
  • I was disappointed that they let Dexter live after hurricane Laura. Disappointment turned into pleasure with the finesse the reboot kicked off. Dexter's breaking point, the urges, the onion like layers of his new life merging with his old life was actually pretty dope. Harry, Dexter's father moulded him creatively, it's to be seen what Dexter does with that gift!
  • Dexter: New Blood wasn't supposed to come out. Dexter: New Blood only disappoints as a result. Yes, in general, if we consider season 9 as a separate project, it is not bad, and you can watch it very much. But if you consider the series as a whole, then this is an extra season. Season 8 ended with dignity. As for Dexter: New Blood itself, there is no good and intelligible antagonist, there is no interesting story. If you're a big fan of the original series, it hurts you to watch it.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The original Dexter's series is a masterpiece from beginning till the end, but it was true the ending was not really good for mostly fans including me.

So, in 2021 we have a second chance to fix the error with Dexter New Blood, but the ending is even worse. Soap opera level. So, what's the point of the whole season?

I have enjoyed some parts of Dexter New Blood with it's ups and downs, (best is watching again Dexter and Debra) and worst is Harrison.

Then, we get to episode 10 that is a total nonsense and ruins everything. It's an insult to intelligence and to original fans. A really missed opportunity (again) to create the ending that Dexter Morgan deserves.
  • Dexter: New Blood quickly felt like Dexter again. I was enjoying it more and more until the last 10-15 minutes of the final episode. I can't believe they did it again. They freaking did it again... Once more they ruined it with the ending.

It's a damn shame, because this had so much potential.

Slow start but the feel is pretty similar to the original. I really can't stand Deb in this one, harry was at least helpful, all Deb seems to do in this one is scream and yell at Dexter. The other thing that bothered me with both the original series and this one is fact that Dexter is always looking for ways to get rid of bodies. For anyone else that might be a thing, but he's literally a forensics expert, he spent most of his life in science, if anyone should know how to melt a body to nothing it should be him.

Update: After watching the whole "first season", I'm confused as why they started a new series instead of just calling it season 9. It seems like they literally did this just to wrap up the original series ending, and it really doesn't look very likely that they'll even have a season 2 so...?
  • Warning: Spoilers
There was a lot they got right with this series.

Dexter was as good as he's ever been.

The tension and humor was there.

I really liked some of the side characters, especially Angela and her daughter.

Kurt struck an interesting tone, a well known member of the community operating in plain sight. I thought he started off as some petrochemical billionaire or something but he morphed into the truckstop owner and Samaritan, but not.

Harrison was ok, and did deliver some decent character traits, his ability to tell Dexter what his was going to do and not take orders etc. He didn't really sell his Dark Passenger side well though.

Angela started off well as the hot wild and capable sheriff. She did seem way to quick to turn on Dexter though, they could have fixed that with a bit of back story about how she responds badly to people who lie cos someone lied in her past and really messed her up.

Mostly it was interesting and watchable, but the end didn't work. They just didn't sell it well. It felt rushed and tacked on and didn't make a dot of sense, and it could have worked. All they needed to do was talk about it a bit more and hammer home the logic of it. Why it was the only way forward. As it stands it totally wasn't. It achieved nothing. Harrison didn't get to stay and have a life in the town which would have been one good reason, he's a lone, he's going to be pulled in and tied into it all, it really wasn't a win.

Dexter's death was lame too. Like they did one take of it and said, it'll do, move one.

I didn't buy it and it looks like no one else did, and it's a shame as the rest of the series definitely had it's moments.

Dexter's son and Angela's daughter getting it on was funny and weird, the town was interesting and the setting was well chosen. This shouldn't have been the end.

The Dark Passenger is hitching a ride ... Picking up where we left off a few plus years down the road ... Dexter is back and here we go again and the writing is spot on .

Glad to see a great show even better with episode 1.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Throughout the season, I kept feeling so lucky that I somehow get to watch one of my all-time favorite characters again. I was nervous going in, but it immediately alleviated my concerns. It's very well-made with great directing and editing. In some ways I found it better than the original show, from a technical perspective. I love how certain sound effects are strategically extra loud. And while it feels fresh in this new setting, it still feels very much the same.

I was fully invested in the story and the characters. I love the route they took with the story. The only downside is it didn't finish on the best note. But I had a blast with this season. I feel it's on par with most of the original show. But nothing is as good as the first two seasons. (1 viewing, 1/9/2022)

    SPOILERS

What a great villain. Kurt brought so much to the show. Again on par with most of the villains from the original show. The storyline with Angela finding out more and more about Dexter is so suspenseful. I was fully invested in Dexter's relationship with Harrison.

The finale is awesome... until the very end. It angered me. I don't hate it as much as others I've heard. It's underwhelming but not terrible. The reason I felt so much anger is 1) my beloved Dexter is dead. I had some comfort knowing he was out there somewhere living his exiled life.

And 2) I really wanted to see more from Dexter and Harrison: The Killers. I would have loved to see them go to another city with a whole new storyline. Come onnnnnn.

    Warning: Spoilers
First of all, Dexter was a show that I loved very much. I never liked the finale. I was very excited when I read the news that Dexter will have a sequel. It's as if Michael C. Hall was born for this role. Overall, Dexter: New Blood was good. The name of the series was telling how it would end, but I didn't like this finale too. It didn't suck, but that's how it should'nt have ended. The final part, written very lazily. Anyway, I'm so happy to be watched Dexter again, but the finale shouldn't have been like this.
  • Interesting, however not the same as the old/original Dexter series.

I'm a big fan of the original Dexter series, and of course, as a fan, I wanted to watch this new mini-series too.

I enjoyed this one, and to be honest, the second and third watches were better for me, once I got over the initial disappointment about the differences and accepted this one for what it was.

After all, this series is named Dexter: New Blood, which prepares the viewer for something familiar yet different. We know that Dexter Morgan had to go somewhere else to start afresh, under a new name, as he faked his own death. He has now found a small town in the north, which is very different than Miami.

Here are some of the DIFFERENCES that were significant for me. As you may guess, these were my favourite parts of Dexter, and what got me interested in the original series in the first place:

    • LOCATION/SETTING/COLOURS
I love Florida. In the original series, I couldn't get enough of the colourful palette when I watched Dexter. The sunny weather, the palm trees, the bright colours of people's clothing, the buildings and the whole backdrop.

Dexter: New Blood is filmed in Massachusetts, but the story is supposed to take place in the small town of Iron Lake, NY. In any case, this new series takes place in winter. So all you see in snow and a grey backdrop. People are always in heavy winter clothing, mostly in dark and/or dull colours, and we almost never see the sun.

Bustling Miami has given its place to a quiet town where few people live.

    • MUSIC
No more happy Latin music. This new one is full of a variety of rock songs, most of which are not really my style. I know that Michael C. Hall (Dexter's actor) chose some of them himself. He's also an accomplished theater performer and singer.

    • HUMOUR STYLE
Oh, how I miss the dark humour, the smart puns and the irony and sarcasm of the filming and in Dexter's voice-over.

Dexter: New Blood is drama, but that's all. No more chuckles or laughs, and by the way no more Masuka's comic relief.

    • FAVOURITE/FAMILIAR CHARACTERS
All of Dexter's entourage in the original series were interesting to me. They were the constants and grew older with us and with Dexter: Masuka, Harry, Rita (as long as she was alive), even Laguerta (before her death), Angel, Deb, Astor and Cody... Here's a list of familiar/reappearing characters in the new series: Dexter himself, Harrison- as a teenager, Deb - as an imaginary ghost who is mostly angry and menacing now, and Angel- in a couple of very short scenes.

The new characters of Dexter: New Blood are mostly small towners with some bad guys among them.

    ***

Some of the pleasantly similar aspects:

    • DEXTER'S CHARACTER
Although with less humour and irony, we see that Dexter Morgan, in spite of aging, hasn't quite changed his personality. He's still eager to fit in, still smiling to others and trying to look like any ordinary guy. He's living alone at the beginning and talking to Deb's ghost in private. The series also starts with the views seeing Dexter abstaining from killing (for 10 years). However, it looks like he's fighting his dark passenger everyday.

    • DEB'S PRESENCE
It's interesting that Jennifer Carpenter is back. I love any character that she plays. She's genuine and in my opinion is one of the best in expressing raw emotion.

Even though Deb's imaginary ghost which we see here is often angry, criticizing and sometimes menacing, it's nice to have her back.

    • STORYLINE
There's a mystery to be solved here, but we don't get the same sense of urgency about it, especially at the beginning. Towards the end of the mini-series, the story becomes a little more convoluted before all reaches a resolution.

Nothing groundbreakingly different, just different. If you changed the names of the characters (if this were unrelated to Dexter), I would never start watching it. Mind you, I am not unhappy that I did, as it became more interesting toward the end.

I'm giving it 8/10 mostly because I'm a Dexter fan.
  • Warning: Spoilers
The first 9 episodes were solid. I genuinely anticipated the ending Clyde Phillips promised. It was supposed to "blow up the internet" and was the "best thing I ever wrote"

I have no problem with what happened in the end. It was more about how they did it. First and foremost, Dexter never panics. Never. He told Harrison he had gotten out of worse situations and he had many times and now based on almost zero evidence they'd never be able to do anything with Dexter panicked and killed Logan. Moreover, the expert in anatomy and killing couldn't manage to just have him pass out.

I knew he was gonna die or at least strongly suspected it, but as I said it was about the how. After he panics he then says he understands love for the first time and he shows it by allowing his son to murder him.

It was rushed and poorly executed. Clyde Phillips hype was absurd. They would have spent an entire episode on the interrogation. The few minutes they did was riveting. Dexter would have found a way out and then they could have killed him however they wanted after he was released. I was so irritated by this total departure in the essence of the character in the killing of Logan that I just rolled my eyes at the ending.

It wasn't a bad season. I thought episode 9 was well done. It set the stage for the big disappointment once again not because he died, but the way they did it. In my mind he is still a lumberjack roaming the Pacific Northwest.
  • It was good, it was Dexter good, but I have to agree with other reviewers: the finale is really bad. I had read reviews before watching the series and I couldn't believe the finale would really be that bad. The story could have gone in any direction, but it seems it went in the worst possible one. The finale just doesn't make sense, it doesn't add up; it's not only unrealistic, but it also doesn't seem to be justified even in the realms of an isolated piece of fiction. Everything was really good, but the finale was just bad writing.
  • "Dexter: New Blood" by all means is an exhilarating premise - you get to be taken back to one of the most iconic shows to grace the TV screen in the mid to late 2000s before streaming was a thing. The character Dexter puts you in a rather complicated and awkward position of rooting for a serial killer. That's because the original series invests the time to form a sympathetic backstory, and it effectively creates the nuances of a charming Dexter that keeps you interested in what happens to him. The same goes for most or all of the supporting characters who are properly given sufficient stories and screen time that you also care about them. Unfortunately, the 10 episodes of "New Blood" do not succeed in making any of the other characters sympathetic and really likable. Either the season is too short, or the characters themselves, from Angela to even Harrison, lack proper development. By the end, the only real sympathetic character is still only Dexter, so you continue to root for him but without conflict because you could care less about the other characters.
  • Warning: Spoilers
It is obvious that this series was made because they should have killed off Dexter in the last one. To be blunt this wasn't great and the ending was unbelievably stupid.

We were made to believe that Harrison was so excited to find that Dexter was a killer and even joined in the killing of Kurt. 'I am just like you' he cried only in the next episode to say he was nothing like him. So Dexter didn't want to screw up his sons life and asked him to kill him. WHAT?? As if that wouldn't haunt him for the rest of his life!! Dexter had built up sympathy for his character over the years as he always killed bad people. So what does he do? Kill nice cop Logan so any sympathy we had went away in a second. Dexter would NEVER have done this, never.

It wasn't all bad. Clancy Brown was very good as bad guy Kurt and I liked Julia Jones as Angela. But really 'Dexter:New Blood' was a mess which is a pity.
