Bollywood stars including Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan turned out for the opening of the Mumbai Film Festival (October 14-21), which is celebrating its 16th edition despite almost being shut down a few months ago due to lack of funding.
Saved through donations from filmmakers, stars, industrialists and audience members, the festival put on a glittering opening night ceremony at the historical Chandan Cinema in Mumbai’s Juhu district.
Almost losing the festival appears to have convinced the Bollywood fraternity to show unprecedented levels of support. Sponsors and partners including HBO, Rentrak, Pinkerton, Bajaj Group and Mahindra Rise have also recently come on board the event.
Kalki Koechlin played compere for the evening, while Rai Bachchan inaugurated the festival and Kumar presented a lifetime achievement to veteran Bollywood diva Helen. Rai Bachchan and industrialist Niraj Bajaj also presented Catherine Deneuve with a lifetime achievement award.

After winning acclaim the world over, an extraordinary Indian film is now coming home. Fire in the Blood, which earlier this year became the first Indian film ever to be selected for the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the Sundance Film Festival, the world’s most prestigious and competitive festival for independent films, is releasing in cities around the country on October 11. Directed by Punjabi-Irish filmmaker Dylan Mohan Gray, Fire in the Blood is an intricate tale of ‘medicine, monopoly and malice’ and tells the story of how Western pharmaceutical companies and governments aggressively blocked access to low-cost AIDS drugs for the countries of Africa and the global south in the years after 1996 – causing ten million or more unnecessary deaths – and the improbable group of people who decided to fight back.

For film lovers in India, the month of June seems to be a great month for indie-spirited cinema. Be it Dibakar Banerjee’s Shanghai or Anurag Kashyap’s Cannes pick Gangs of Wasseypur. Joining the bandwagon is a relatively obscure indie feature film which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Indian Film Festival of Los Angeles 2012. Karan Gour’s Kshay has been doing the festival rounds for the past 6 months bagging awards and high levels of critical acclaim. The film is scheduled for a theatrical release on the 15th of June under the ‘PVR Director’s Rare’ label.
The film revolves around a lower middle-class housewife’s obsession to possess an unfinished statue of the Goddess Lakshmi. And how this obsession infects everything around her – her home, her dreams and even the only family she’s got, her husband Arvind.
