  • What a film. Tried to be the next "Descent", but only made me want to cry. It was a confused mishmash of a story and even worse editing. First it was just a haunted crypt, then the undead appear ... and why exactly were people buried there in the first place? And the gang of thieves, they're very unbelievable characters. Like who in her right mind would go out on a 'job' while her younger brother lies dead in the back of a car? And the situation is so contrived, even their get-ups from the shirt and the shorts, down to the belt) are exactly the same! The film was directed by a certain Craig McMahon; the way it went it could easily have been directed by the late Ed McMahon ... it was so hilariously bad. Not even Sarah Oh's brief nude scene could save this film.
  • I watched this, because we get to see hundreds of movies for a very cheap price over here, almost for free, but if you really want to spend a few Dollars on this or rent the DVD, DON'T. It's just not worth it.

Watching a few talent-less girls crawl around in endless underground tunnels is awfully boring. The movie is not scary even a bit. The ghosts look totally ridiculous and make you want to hate all kinds of ghost stories. 1 hour and 22 minutes? Are you kidding me? The scenes were so repetitive that I felt like I'd been watching it for four hours. I was just waiting for it to come to an end, but no! Even when you do think it's over and you begin to cheer up, it starts all over again with the girl crawling back the same lousy tunnels we've seen at least a dozen times before!

Trust me, the only reasons I watched this were: It was late at night and I had nothing better to do and of course because it was almost a free watch! I give it 2 stars because I was fast asleep after watching this. YAWN.
  • Seeing this film was a mixed bag. The story is very simple, yet that's not necessary a bad thing for a movie like this. However a little more character background for the individual girls would have made the movie a lot more suspenseful (you'll actually hope they survive for another reason rather than hoping for a boob flash).

The acting is terrible. Especially when they have to do something else than just scream and look scared.

The nudity is there (and nice looking girl too) but it only helps to make the movie look even more low budget.

There's a lot of atmosphere in the movie, once they go into the crypt. However everything above is just lame. From the opening car theft to the planing room.

The ghosts look scary (with their all white) eyes, but they don't exactly look like they've been buried for 70 years. Considering the budget, they are definitely one of the highlights of the film.

Another highlight are the somewhat sudden scares, like ghost appearing for just a second before it fades into the dark.

I think both the movie and director have potential to do wonders with a larger moneybag (like $5 millions or something).

Cut out the stupid stuff like the opening car theft and the ending (the last 10 minutes or so). Get some better actors, and don't use an all female cast. It's not very believable. Add more character development for the supporting leads. Remove the unnecessary nudity. Improve the ghost make-up, and remove the flickering (so unoriginal). Add more environmental dangers like crushing concrete, holes/traps and stuff.

Last but not least (and I'm not sure about this), add to the story a reason/hint why the crypt may be haunted. Something like a necromancer was buried there. This could even be the secret agenda of one of the grave robbers.
  • If you can't afford decent effects, at least have a decent script. If you can't have a decent script, have people who know how to act. If you can't have people who know how to act, you end up with The Crypt.

To say that this movie was uninspired would be a massive overstatement.

So poorly crafted and lacking in quality, that it's not even in the so-bad-it's-good category.

The movie starts with a stupid, over-acting, over-emoting, boggle-eyed grave robber doing his thing and paying the price. This is meant to be the hook that catches our interest, but all I felt was a sense of foreboding at how tedious the scene was.

Sadly, the movie went downhill from there. I'm not even going to waste time on further analysis.

Appalling. Don't waste 5 seconds on it.
  • A girl and her ex-con boyfriend are convinced to join a group of thieves planning to break into a sealed Depression-era crypt and loot the bodies of their jewelry. However the crypt just might be haunted...

There's nothing spectacular about this low-budget horror film, but it somehow ends up being a lot more entertaining than it has any right to be. The plot is incredibly light for its hour and twenty minute running time, so there are an excessive amount of "girls crawling through crypt corridor" scenes. The director doesn't skip ahead, even when the thieves are backtracking through areas we've already seen, and those sequences can get dull. (Short on plot though it is, I did notice at least one plot hole.) If you like cleavage, however, plenty is on display. A bit more cleavage than gore, perhaps unfortunately.

The acting isn't as bad as a previous comment would have you believe. Sarah Oh (PJ) and Abra May (Gina) are the standouts and luckily it's them who get the most screen time. Once the girls get into the crypt and start looking scared, there are no line deliveries bad enough to make you roll your eyes.

The sets are pretty incredible, if obviously too new to be built during the Great Depression, and unlike most low budget films they are actually lit very well. In fact sometimes the crypt corridors are a bit too bright - I think a little bit of darkness might have made for a scarier mood.

You've seen the flickering ghosts here in a billion other movies, so don't expect to have any nightmares after watching The Crypt, unless perhaps you're claustrophobic.

And yes, there is a brief topless shot of the beautiful Sarah Oh, which for some might make this rental worth catching all by itself.

It doesn't get much worse than this turd. The acting is worse than something I'd expect to see in an elementary school play. The script is about as deep, engaging, and sensible as the lyrics to a typical R.E.M. song.

I'm not kidding when I say that this film is better suited as a comedy than as a thriller or horror flick. You'll laugh when someone in the cast witnesses a gnarled ghost/zombie, and acts as if it's nothing more than a chihuahua. Or how they respond to seeing someone killed right before their eyes as if the person had received nothing more than a papercut. It may be the most astonishingly-bad acting and directing I've ever seen.

This movie really is not worth even what I've written so far.

I really feel sorry that i have watched this "movie". I do not remember if i saw something so terrible ever before. Those kids know f..k about acting and whole storyline is missing. The only positive thing about this film is that you can see Asian girl tits for a little while. When her boyfriend is released from prison it makes you wonder, do they have such good barbers in jail ???? And what happened to that girl which has been shot in car, or why are they all dressed like analogy of Lara Croft from Tomb Raider when they are going in to the crypt ? Another thing "Ghosts". Jeez they are so damn lazy, doing nothing only standing around and pawing females like a bunch of German tourist on trip in Czech. This is the most worse parody of movie i have ever seen so far and it is gonna be very hard to beat this feeling with another movie. DO NOT WATCH THIS if you want to stay sane.

I thought of maybe a 1 but then I thought about it. It's not entirely unwatchable. It's just not something I would spend money on. And thankfully I didn't. One obviously gratuitous frontal nudity scene probably made the cut because the actress figured it may get her more work. Weak script. Poor acting. Scenes that go on forever (how long do we have to watch somebody walking through a tunnel before we get the drift). It was a joy to watch with a couple guys between calls at the firehouse. A great movie for heckling. There are some very obvious continuity problems too. Which I always find amusing so that's good for a chuckle.
  • this is the lowest rating anyone can give to the movie. believe me we may have seen far better scary, sexy and sensible low budget movies than this. well here is the plot (if you like to call it so) bunch of crooked amateurs crawl into a crypt which is haunted!!! by the spirits!!!!! every one gets killed as expected. rest is with held for my own reason. here is a glimpse of some sensible scenes from the movie.

trapped inside the 80 years old crypt hero finds a manhole with handle, the gutter is powered by flashy lights, two inter connected rooms in the same level - one is filled with sky high water and the other has water just above your neck, there are doors locked with the keys kept upon it... the ghosts looks scared not the actors, quite possibly due their so called acting??? casting is awfully horribly. see this movie at your own risk. as the movie tagline rightly says Some things are better left buried... its quite true for this movie.
  • Sometimes you just got to stop up, take a breath and actually pay heed to the reviews about a movie and actually look at the ratings given to a movie on IMDb. Now, of course, that can't be generalized for every single movie, because likes and dislikes is a matter of individual preference. But for this particular movie, I wish I had actually taken notice of those.

The story is about a group of young people that venture into some crypt found beneath the city (that no one for some odd reason never went into or found) in search of the valuables stored here. As they lay their hands on the untold riches, it becomes clear that they are not alone in the crypts, and that the ancient dead will claim what is rightfully theirs at the cost of the living.

Initially, then the story did have some potential, but it was all wasted by horrendous direction and a lack of commitment from the actors and actresses. And given the dire peril that the people were in, they were all awfully calm, level-headed and most often little worried about their lives being at risk. No, it just all didn't come together for a greater unity, and as such, the movie was a disaster.

If there was anything holding the movie afloat, then it had to be the performance of Sandra Oh, although she could do very little to prevent this train wreck to slide downhill.

The death scenes were laughable and came off the screen as anything but scary or disturbing.

"The Crypt" is not worth sitting through for a whole hour and twenty-something odd minutes. The movie just trotted along in a very dull and monotone pace, never really picking up pace at any point. And to put the icing on the cake, then the ending was just a final slap in the face to anyone who actually managed to suffer through the entire movie (as I had the misfortune to do).

"The Crypt" should be left as crypts should be, sealed and left alone.

The Crypt starts in 1979 with a guy breaking into a coffin and stealing a ring off of a corpse. As he reaches back in for more jewelry, the lid slams down, severing his hand. The entrance to the crypt seals, trapping him inside.

We move ahead thirty years, and Perry is getting out of prison and his girlfriend P.J. meets him and three more trailer trash party girls join the get together. Gina mentions an underground vault built in the 1930s, which contains wealthy peoples final resting place.

Equipped like coal miners, with picks, flashlights and ropes, they venture down into the abyss. Gina's backpack is emptied mysteriously and they see ghosts. Do they leave? Of course not, they are greedy. Gina removes a necklace from a skeleton and says that the corpse opened it's eyes. A loud rumbling occurs and some of the dead awaken and attack the grave robbers. Karma takes over, offing the evil perpetrators, one by one. Do not waste your time on this garbage.

This movie could have been good...but it just...wasn't. It wasn't horrid, but I really hate to see wasted potential.

Apparently, this movie had a budget...which makes the fact that this film left so much to be desired, even more of a serious disappointment.

I almost stopped watching after the obligatory and useless boob shot. When are film makers going to grow up?

Not just men watch horror...and the shot did nothing to help the movie.

There are thousands of Indie filmmakers (myself included) that would give anything to have a budget like the one this film had...and to see it wasted on boring acting, sometimes stupid plot and lackluster presentation, is a shame.

Some parts were okay...some were dumb. Worth a watch...just don't expect much.

    1. It is imperative that young woman spend an inordinate amount of time applying makeup and hair so they look as attractive as possible when delving into a tomb to extricate valuables.

    2. All member of said group of thieves must wear the same coordinated clothing. Very low cut black tank tops to extenuate the bosoms and skin tight shorts to accentuate the derrière for from behind buttock shots. Just forgo clothing and gloves to protect the body while crawling around in an antiquated tomb.

    3. As always with any antiquated location when the intrepid group arrives, electricity is on. This a tomb that was supposedly sealed off decades ago. Some well-meaning individual has also obviously been changing out incandescent light bulbs as they burn out. Thumbs up helpful citizen.

    4. The obligatory scene when a thief is checking for a cell phone signal underground through yards of cement. DOH

    5. One of the most illogical and ridiculous lines written for an actor: Leader of group is explaining to the only other member alive that she had been in this tomb a few years before and had seen the animated dead and she was not bothered by them so she forms the cogent thought that they would not bother as a group as they were ripping the dead off. Lug wrench to the head!

    6. The idea that a tomb is the location of millions of dollars' worth of jewelry and cash is completely and UTTERLY unbelievable. Thieves would be killing one another to get into the tomb and it would have to be under armed guard to prevent theft.

    7. A young lady is capable of looking at an antiquated piece of jewelry and immediately give you the going monetary value of said piece. RIGHT!

    8. The tombs animated dead individual dealing out justice is obviously James Belushi dressed as Jake Blues. He was perfect for the part since he is ungainly deteriorated and rotted. You just CANNOT mistake that Jake Blues smile!

    9. Never feel regret nor remorse over your scumbag boyfriend enough to once again enter said tomb to find you cannot extract him and he meets his demise at the hands of Jake Blues in a matter of seconds.

    10. If you are SUCH a professional perhaps when stealing an automobile you can utilize that cell phone to keep in contact with another of your posse to relay to you in REAL time what the owner is doing. Especially since he is a crack shot with a pistol and is able to shoot through the front window and score a head shot on the person sitting in the back seat behind the person in the passenger seat.

What is interesting is that there is a movie here but you have to make it gritty to work not just film young woman scantily clothed that become the masturbatory fuel for adolescent males.

THE CRYPT is a cheap shot-on-digital-video copy of THE DESCENT made with only a fraction of that film's budget and, indeed, talent. It's about the most unconvincing group of female thieves ever who for their next job have to break into some subterranean passages in order to steal a fortune. Inevitably once they get underground they discover that they're not alone and something very sinister is guarding the loot.

Having watched a ton of shot-on-video productions over the last few days, I can report that this one is better-shot than most. The individual scenes have depth and a sheen of quality that you don't normally see in this genre. There's not much incident here, just a lot of creeping around in the dark, with the occasional bit of atmosphere. It's no DESCENT, that's for sure. The menace comes from a cool-looking zombie which is way underutilised. There's a bit of brief gore but mainly this is all tease and no pay-off.

Still at least a point for trying. Plus the scenes "down under" have a certain good look to them. The claustrophobia can be felt through the screen. But that's almost about it (unless you count the blood effects and one scene of nudity to the positive side as well). You can't possibly cheer the acting ... if you're serious about it.

Something the movie unfortunately is. Instead of playing it for fun (might have netted a few extra points here and there), it tries to be serious. It doesn't really work. If you don't mind the acting, you will mind the dialog. The "plot" is more than simple, but there are not many horror movies who have something complex to give to the viewer, so that doesn't really count. Not really worth a look ...

This is not as bad as comments describe it. Regarding the flashlights what is the problem. There is nothing wrong with flickering ghosts as no one has seen ghosts so far. Come on its only an assumption guys. It is a crypt and years back people were buried in crypts to save space and it is possible that the ghosts guard their belongings from being robbed. Yes the acting was something terrible but for that we cannot blame the script. One thing we need to keep in mind is that we are seeing a horror movie which is an imagination and does not require any thinking and not a history movie or a documentary. Also one comment wa indicating two interconnected levels in the crypt one having sky high water and the other containing neck deep. Did u observe that the levels are of different heights.
