Everyone knows gay entertainment fiends love a character actress, and it turns out the feeling is mutual. Molly Shannon earned an Independent Spirit Award for playing the dying mother to a gay son in “Other People,” longtime Lgbt activist Kathy Najimy graced the “BearCity” trilogy with her presence, and now Patricia Richardson is following suit. The former “Home Improvement” star is lending her talents to “Cubby,” a quirky coming-of-age comedy about a gay man whose best friend is the 6-year-old boy he nannies.
“Cubby” boasts David France (“How to Survive a Plague”) and Henry van Ameringen (“Love Is Strange”) as executive producers, and premieres at Outfest Los Angeles this weekend. IndieWire debuts the exclusive trailer below.
An official synopsis reads: “Mark, a misanthropic 26-year-old gay man, had been living in his mother’s garage in Indiana and working on his sexually explicit — and Bdsm-themed — artwork. After moving to New York,...

“Susanne Bartsch picked up where [Andy] Warhol left off,” RuPaul Charles says of his friend, the woman he says set him down the path to become Supermodel of the World. He’s not the only one: Performance artist Joey Arias credits Bartsch with encouraging him to try drag, transgender pioneer Flawless Sabrina speaks of her in the same breath as Warhol, and fashion historians trace London style’s expansion to New York and Tokyo in the ’80s to Bartsch.
As for the woman herself, she’s still throwing parties.
While dressing for one of her fabled Tuesday night parties at Meatpacking district club Le Bain, Bartsch was fretting over the colors for one of her outstanding looks: “It’s not really pink,” she says. “I mean, I know it’s pink, but it’s not a pink that I feel pink in.”

“If something’s not representing you, you just have to change it,” queer filmmaker Silas Howard told IndieWire last month. “Because no one else is going to care enough to do it for you.”
That’s exactly what “BearCity” writer/director Doug Langway did when it came to addressing the dearth of movies about his community: Bears. A passionate niche within gay male circles, a bear, for the uninitiated, is an affectionate term for “the bigger, hairier guy,” as Langway put it. With only one feature under his belt from 1996 (“Raising Heroes”), Langway initially set to work on a script that would encompass all the colors of the bear rainbow.
Seven years and three movies later, the “BearCity” trilogy is the biggest gay movie franchise you’ve probably never heard of. It’s also a triumph of a grassroots independent filmmaking model that has all but disappeared.

The Broadway box office dropped $2.5 million after the tony Awards snubbed several major stars and their shows. Still, there are bright spots, like Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which was already selling nearly capacity and is now selling out, jumping $267,957 over the pre-Tony week.

Age is but a number, especially when it comes to romance. Derrick Gordon, a basketball player at the University of Massachusetts athlete who upon coming out last month became the first openly gay Ncaa Divison I athlete, is dating actor Gerald McCullouch, who is 25 years his senior. The couple were all smiles attending the 2014 GLAAD Awards over the weekend, with Gordon looking smart in a white tuxedo jacket and McCullouch skipping his jacket altogether on the red carpet. So, how did these two fellows meet? McCullouch, 47, tells E! News that they first connected via Twitter a few years ago after Gordon saw McCullouch in the indie film BearCity, about a tight-knit pack of gay friends navigating life...

Gordon -- who only went public about his sexuality last month -- was honored at the event ... and afterward wrote,...

This week marks Disney's latest nature release, Disney's Bears. The film is a documentary tracking the cuddly creatures across the wilderness, ample material to educate and entertain a young kid. We decided to program a 24 hour marathon centered exclusively around bears. Movies about bears, legendary movie bears, and all sorts of bear adventures to either whet you appetite for Disney's latest effort, or to provide a nice full day chaser. So strap in and take a trip to Bear City with us. This is the 24 Hour Bear Movie Marathon. Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

Do you ever feel phantom vibrations from your cell phone? They drive me crazy, but evidently they're pretty common. But nobody knows what causes them. Some think it's stray electrical impulses, which is frightening, but others think it's our overloaded brain misinterpreting other stimuli.

HollywoodNews.com: Well look what was in my email inbox: an announcement that the dreamy Gerald McCullouch who appears on TV’s “CSI” and starred in the outstanding indie flick “Bear City,” is doing a play in La next month!
Gerald stars in the West Coast premiere of “Daddy” at the Hudson Mainstage from Jan. 8 through Feb. 13.
Gerald, one of Out magazine’s “Out 100” this year, plays “Golden Boy” Colin who has a knack for bedding the young, bi-curious hotties in his soccer league. But when he unexpectedly falls for a man half his age, the result is a climactic confrontation with best friend Stew that will forever change their lives.
“I love that it’s a laugh-out-loud funny story that also has a very dark quality,” McCullouch says in the press materials. “The story has a driving sexuality and also an odd edginess that makes its...

A look at what's new on DVD today:
"Modern Times"
Directed by Charlie Chaplin
Released by Criterion Collection
Granted, Warner Brothers released an extensive two-disc collection of arguably Charlie Chaplin's finest film back in 2003, but Criterion Collection is bringing the silent comedian to Blu-ray for the first time with a newly remastered edition of the Depression-era classic with an array of special features including the Dardenne brothers' 2003 tribute to the film, the 1916 two-reeler "The Rink," the Alistair Cooke home movie with Chaplin and Pauline Goddard, "All at Sea," two deleted sequences from the film, a new featurette on the film's special effects with Ben Burtt and Craig Barron and much more.
"Avatar: Extended Collector's Edition"
Directed by James Cameron
Released by Fox Home Entertainment

“Most gay men have the emotional maturity of adolescent girls,” states one character from writer-director Rob Williams’ Role/Play, a so-called romantic comedy featured at this year’s Image+Nation film festival. While the audience laughs in recognition of the stereotype that inspires such a line, a similar statement can be made of gay-themed movies, particularly those classified as “romcoms.” I don’t wish to imply that Role/Play and Douglas Langway’s BearCity, another American “You’ll Laugh! You’ll Cry! You’ll See Tons of Male Flesh!” effort, are representative of what the festival had to offer. Rather, I would argue that they are emblematic of the audience’s low standards when faced with the festival’s lighter fare. In the case of both films,...

Let's face it: it can be tough to be the kind of gay guy who is attracted more to meatier, hairier men in a world where lean, rippled abs and waxed backs and chests are seen as the physical ideal.
In response, a whole community has built up around these men and those who share their interest: the bear community. And it sometimes must feel like they're living in a completely different place than the rest of the Glbt community — like they're living on a different planet, or at least, well, in a different city.
A new movie, Bear City (out on DVD next month), takes bears and non-bears alike into that city.
And like The Boys in the Band (one of the first movies about openly gay men) and the 1978 French-Italian film La Cage Aux Folles (one of the first popular movies about drag queens), the hopes and dreams of many,...

Good things come to those who wait and for those who feel as though they've suffered through a year of largely uninspired films up to now will likely breathe a sigh of relief at the sound of names like Darren Aronofsky, Sofia Coppola and Peter Weir. 'Tis the season for Jim Carrey to take a pay cut to star in a gay romance like "I Love You Phillip Morris" or Javier Bardem is whispering sweet nothings to spirits in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarittu's "Biutiful" rather than Julia Roberts.
There is the naughty -- Kristen Stewart stripping in "Welcome to the Rileys," the would-be terrorists of the Brit comedy "Four Lions," or the evil Santa in "Rare Exports" -- and the nice -- the tap-dancing lovers in "Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench," the glory of James Franco's daredevil surviving "127 Hours" and Colin Firth's verbally-challenged royal conquering his stutter in "The King's Speech.

Via JoeMyGod comes the above cover of Next Magazine, with the stars of Bear City reenacting a certain bloody Rolling Stone cover. Speaking of Rolling Stone, they're pissed that the Ugandan rag that published the "gay death list" is using their name, and calls it “one of the most vile and hateful anti-gay screeds we have ever read." They're demanding that the publication cease and desist. Below you can see a preview for next week's Top Chef: Diabetic Victims Unit which shows some tension in "Team Diva." Unfortunately, when I wished for Yigit covered in whip cream ... this is not what I had in mind.
Sir Elton and Lady Gaga will, after all the speculation, be teaming up for a duet. "Hello, Hello,” will appear in the upcoming Disney animated film Gnomeo & Juliet. Russell Tovey's short film Roar is available as...

Take a look at this picture, it's a prime example of what makes aGLIFF and in fact every film festival in town work. Pictured above (clockwise from upper left) are David Sweeney, Jenn Garrison, Jean Lauer, Andy Campbell, Michelle Faires and lastly actor Alex Di Dio from closing-night film BearCity. Together they represent the aGLIFF board, 2010 juries, volunteers, filmmakers, and the local film community on all levels. If it looks like they're having fun, they are. It's been a long festival, but a very successful one with many sold-out or close to capacity screenings.
