The BBC and Zdf have struck a scripted partnership for new high-end drama shows.

The news comes two days after the networks unveiled a new series titled Honey from Killing Eve producer Sid Gentle and Extraordinary writer Emma Moran at Series Mania. They have recently collaborated on the second season of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which is also made with Netflix.

The BBC and Zdf said the collab “will maximise the strengths of two of Europe’s leading public service broadcasters, combining Zdf’s pan European co-production know-how with the BBC’s track record of hugely popular and award-winning scripted titles.”

The move comes with the bottom falling out the American co-pro market, which has hugely impacted the BBC’s ability to make high-end fare in particular. A number of projects are stuck in funding limbo.

Sophie Judge, a Sky vet who had been with the pay-tv giant for 15 years, replaces Rachel Bailey and is rejoining UKTV as Global Acquisitions Manager after a stint with the channel group in the 2000s. She will be responsible for sourcing and securing shows from third parties for BBC Studios-owned UKTV’s portfolio of free-to-air and pay channels and free streaming service U, along with BBC Studios’ global branded services. Recent buys have included Prison Break, The Chelsea Detective and MasterChef Australia. BBC Studios & Zdf Renew Partnership

BBC Studios and Germany’s Zdf today announced at Content London that they’ve renewed their long-term strategic partnership on scripted content. The two broadcasters have said the multi-year deal will extend co-productions on scripted TV content, with Zdf and BBC Studios partnering to co-produce titles across the BBC Studios’ content pipeline. The new agreement also extends to first option on pre-sales and acquisitions across BBC Studios’ catalog available in Germany. Acquisitions already confirmed include Death in Paradise S13-14, Beyond Paradise S1-2, and The Outlaws S2-3. The original partnership with Zdf was forged in 2019. Ther collaborations include A Good Girls Guide to Murder, The Famous Five Series 1, Kidnapped: The Chloe Ayling Story, and The Chelsea Detective.

The cast consists of Anne Zander (Sleeping Dog), James Boyle (The Final Goodbye), Sophie Stone (The Chelsea Detective), Ace Mahbaz (Small World), and newcomer Anna Seymore.

The story Evans has crafted for Retreat takes place in an isolated deaf community, where cracks begin to appear in Matt’s (Boyle) seemingly idyllic world when the arrival of enigmatic outsider Eva (Zander) forces him to question the realities of his identity. Exclusive: Harry Potter star Tom Felton has boarded Gandhi, the Hansal Mehta-directed streaming series about the iconic Indian nonviolent resistance leader from Applause Entertainment.

Felton will play Josiah Oldfield, Gandhi’s first and best friend during a period he spent in London while studying law. Pratik Gandhi (no relation) is playing Gandhi, as we reported back in May 2022, and we can reveal his real-life partner, Bhamini Oza, will play Kasturba Gandhi, the Mahatma’s wife.

The period drama series has been billed as India’s answer to The Crown, and several scenes are being shot in London this month. As such, British actors James Murray, Jonno Davies, Molly Wright (Apostasy), Simon Lennon, Ralph Adeniyi, Libby Mai and Lindon Alexander are joining Felton in the cast.

Adrian Schiller, the British actor who starred as Lord Aethelhelm in the Netflix drama series The Last Kingdom, has died. He was 60.

Schiller died on April 3 of unspecified causes, his agent, Amanda Evans at Scott Marshall Partners in the U.K., confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter. “It is with the heaviest and saddest hearts that we announce the death of our beloved client, Adrian Schiller, on Wednesday 3 April. He has died far too soon, and we, his family and close friends are devastated by the loss,” the U.K. talent agency said in a statement.

Schiller’s sudden death followed a star turn in Australia in The Lehman Trilogy, where he performed the role of Henry Lehman in the touring production.

Exclusive: The CW has rounded out the series regular cast of The Librarians: The Next Chapter. Callum McGowan, Olivia Morris, Bluey Robinson and Caroline Loncq join previously announced Jessica Green and guest star Christian Kane, who reprises his role as Jacob Stone, in the spinoff series.

From writer and executive producer Dean Devlin, The Librarians: The Next Chapter is a spinoff of the original TV series The Librarians, which followed the adventures of the custodians of a magical repository of the world’s most powerful and dangerous supernatural artifacts. The new series centers on a “Librarian” (McGowan) from the past, who time traveled to the present and now finds himself stuck here. When he returns to his castle, which is now a museum, he inadvertently releases magic across the continent. He is given a new team to help him clean up the mess he made, forming a new team of Librarians.

Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca, and Gaia Wise have joined Emma Thompson on Stampede Ventures and augenschein Filmproduktion’s action thriller The Fisherwoman.

Brian Kirk is directing from a screenplay by writing duo Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb.

The Fisherwoman centres on a woman (Thompson) trapped in a blizzard in Minnesota who interrupts the kidnapping of a teenager organised by a waif and her congenial husband and realises she may be the youngster’s only hope.

Exclusive: The international boss of ITN Productions (Itnp), the production outfit behind Prince Harry: The Interview, has detailed scripted ambitions including a desire to make a show that breaks free from its factual-led comfort zone.

ITN produces the ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 news in the UK but has built up a mini production powerhouse over the past few years, making hundreds of hours of fast-turnarounds, documentaries, and factual entertainment shows including for major streamers, while broadening its U.S. offering. Itnp has now entered the scripted space, unveiling its debut drama, Cush Jumbo-starring Lifetime movie Girl in the Video, late last week.

Ian Russell, who runs the international operation, described the scripted move as a “natural evolution” for the near-15-year-old production outfit, which feels “incremental and comfortable.”

The plan had been in the offing for a while, building on Itnp’s success in the true crime and royal game.
