“Moana 2” (Disney) and “Wicked” (Universal) don’t have the heft of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” but continued with strong showings as the top two films. With strength through the holidays ahead, their combined U.S./Canada gross could top Gerwig and Nolan’s dynamic duo of $962 million.
Together, “Moana 2” and “Wicked” are just short of a $700 million total. “Wicked” stands at $359 million; “Moana 2” is about $337 million. Expect “Wicked” to definitively take the lead since Disney’s animated sequel will soon compete with Disney’s own “Mufasa: The Lion King” and Paramount’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3”.
“Wicked,” which bested “Moana 2” during the week, fell 38 percent from last weekend. Disney’s film (already $90 million better than the 2016 original) dropped 48 percent.
Also to their benefit is Sony’s disastrous “Kraven the Hunter.” With an $11 million opening for the Marvel spinoff and a C Cinemascore, its presence will be minimal...

The typically quiet post-Thanksgiving weekend has become a bustling cinema festival in an unexpected turn of events. Major films like Disney’s Moana 2 and Universal’s Wicked have delivered remarkable box office results, virtually tripling last year’s figures.
The weekend’s total film grosses were around $135 million, potentially representing the highest theatre attendance since 2012. Disney’s animated sequel Moana 2 led the way with a strong second weekend, grossing $52 million and boosting its domestic ticket sales to over $300 million in just 12 days. Its worldwide total has already surpassed $600 million.
Close behind, Wicked continued its strong run with about $35 million in its third weekend, reaching $320 million domestically. While the film’s overseas earnings have been modest, it will likely gross well over $500 million internationally.
Paramount’s Gladiator II earned more than $12 million, bringing its domestic total to $132.7 million. Meanwhile, Amazon MGM’s Red One finished fourth with $7 million. Despite...

For theaters, the post-Thanksgiving weekend usually serves leftover turkeys. Not this year: With “Moana 2” (Disney) and “Wicked” (Universal) leading the way, all films grossed around $135 million. While that’s not a record weekend for 2024 (it’s #13), the total nearly doubles last year’s and it may represent the highest attendance since at least 2012.
This date usually serves as halftime between two holidays, with one or two Thanksgiving holdovers still strong but little other action. With “Gladiator II” (Paramount), this weekend has three.
Among specialized and limited releases, Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” stood out with a second-weekend expansion to 47 theaters and $406,000. Longer-running awards contenders saw weaker post-holiday results.
The weekend also featured a number of non-studio and event presentations with many distributors using the opportunity to get screens to taking their best shot. A handful worked, but a lot of interesting, well-reviewed titles ended up with little to no impact.

This was a notable specialty weekend with Latvian animated Flow powering on and Luca Quadagnino’s Queer starring Daniel Craig rocking its expansion. A notable trio of concert films popped. Telugu Pushpa: The Rule – Part 2 had a super opening, the biggest for an Indian film in some time, as did Solo Leveling – ReAwakening, episodes of the popular anime series.
Fresh off the heels of Daniel Craig’s Best Actor win from the National Board of Review, A234’s Queer surged to $405.k on just 47 screens in a great story on week 2 as Luca Guadagnino’s sumptuous love story based on the book by beat writer William S. Burroughs successfully added 17 new markets. Expands into a limited nationwide break next week. A24’s Y2K by Kyle Mooney opened to $2.1 million at 2,108 theaters for a no. 8 spot.

Travis and Sosie Bacon are about to be one degree of separation away from their father.
Spouses Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick are set to direct themselves and their children in a horror comedy for Dark Castle Entertainment that’s being shopped to buyers at the American Film Market event, according to Variety.
The film, accurately and amusingly titled “Family Movie,” is about a family of horror filmmakers whose latest low-budget project spirals out of control when a dead body is discovered on set. But the show must go on, and the only way to save the movie is to cover up the murder and keep going, by any means necessary. “Premature” writer-director Dan Beers wrote the script, and the Bacons are producing along with Dark Castle’s Norman Golightly.
“There may not be a more compelling Hollywood family than the Bacons,” Golightly said in a statement to Variety. “We...

Bad Shabbos from Daniel Robbins takes viewers into the hectic home of the Gelfland family. The comedy centers around their Shabbat dinner, a weekly tradition for religious Jews held on Fridays. But this meal brings unexpected chaos when David hopes to introduce his Catholic fiancée Meg to the whole clan.
Tensions were high enough with dysfunctional siblings and disapproving grandparents before an accidental death threw the night into complete turmoil. Premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, the fast-paced farce won audiences over with its quirky characters and escalating hijinks.
This review will take a look at the well-written ensemble, themes of tradition versus modern life, and how Robbins sustains laughter throughout constant curveballs.

Set in the well-heeled part of New York’s Upper West Side Jewish community, Tribeca Festival audience award winner “Bad Shabbos” is an entertaining, fast-paced comedy about a Sabbath dinner gone terribly awry. After four previous indie features, director Daniel Robbins should score wider distribution with this tender look at several generations of modern Jews trying to balance the polarities of secular and religious lives, along with the dilemma of a dead body in the bathroom. Robbins and his longtime co-writer Zack Weiner up the comedy ante by stirring in several dysfunctional family dramas, an inter-faith culture clash and an intrepid doorman. A strong ensemble cast nails the tasty dialogue and increasingly frantic action without falling into shtick.

A family comes together for Shabbat dinner in Bad Shabbos, which just premiered at Tribeca Film Festival, including David and his recently-converted-to-Judaism fiance Meg. As if their weekly shabbat gathering wasn’t already a reason for them to all start kvetching, imagine what happens when a Jewish family from Manhattan’s Upper West Side accidentally murders one of their dinner guests. Or when their future and very goy-ish in-laws try to pronounce the word “chutzpah.” Or when the Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man shows up wearing a yarmulke.
