  • The team are on the case of a very strange murder. Neville is still mooning after Florence.

It's always wonderful to welcome a new series of Death in Paradise, this year more than ever it feels like we need it, the chance to see a bit of sun, and get lost in a cosy murder mystery.

It's a good, solid episode, a good story with a good set of characters. I particularly liked the way they blindsided us at the start, clever how they managed to misdirect us with events.

Some really lovely scenes between Neville and Florence, I hope that isn't the end of that particular story.

Absolutely loved Naomi, she was a deal breath of fresh air, I have a feeling she's doing to become a real fan favourite, she's sweet, but also has a bit of a tough side. Shantol Jackson did a cracking job here.

Will we see more of Dwayne?

    Really enjoyed that, 8/10.

    Warning: Spoilers
After the Christmas special. This was the start of the regular series and it is directed by Ben Kellett. He is better known as the director of Mrs Brown Boys!

Gabriel Taylor has come over from Jamaica with his wife and runs a successful business. He is a devout churchgoer and he is under pressure.

He needs to deliver a ransom as his daughter has been kidnapped. Gabriel ends up stabbed to death.

There is a lot of comedy in this story. There is the introduction of a new sergeant. The follow up to Neville's and Florence's relationship.

This was a solid mystery. Neville has narrowed it down to four suspects but they all have an alibi.

I knew the kidnap plot was a set up. The murder mystery was nicely dealt with and it ended with something that I am sure will be followed up in a later episode.

A welcome return to a bit of sunshine in winter.

    Warning: Spoilers
While they are small there are signs of 'Death in Paradise' playing with its standard format a little bit, and as we're now in Series 11 it's probably for the best.

It does remain in large part the same as ever though, which will no doubt please long-term fans.

We've seen the whole "the detective loves his sidekick" plot before in Series 3-4, so I liked the twist on that here, and bravo to the writers for making Neville a heck of a lot more likeable than he was when he joined the show.

Not sure about his comment that Florence had always been there for him since he first arrived though - is he forgetting that it was Madeline? Actually, best to forget that character entirely.

Sergeant Naomi Thomas is the new recruit here too, and the 'comedy' subplot with her and Marlon feels a lot more natural than anything Dwayne did in 8 years on the show.

    A good start overall.
  • This a very pleasant entertaining series and the new series continues the tradition.

However, i am still trying to work out how (after over 10 years) the police in a French Island in the Caribbean is seemingly run by the British !!
  • Warning: Spoilers
The beautiful Shantol Jackson makes her debut as Sergeant Naomi Thomas, following the departure of JP.

Neville and Florence...well, there's a bit of an icy detente along the lines of "just friends". Anyway, if things don't work out between them, then maybe Neville can deflect his interest to Naomi I guess.

The mystery murder of Gabriel kept me guessing until the very end.

Actually this episode was unique because there were two deaths. The second death was at the very end (one of the suspects of the murder of Gabriel) and it was quite cryptic. Was it a set-up for another episode?

    Warning: Spoilers
"Death in Paradise" has been a real treat for years now, but it took some time for the 11th season to come to my area. It finally did. The previous season started off on an average note, this premiere is definitely better. It's not perfect, but it is enjoyable.

Let's start with the good aspects, shall we?

. The production values of this entry are great as usual. The episode looks amazing (Saint-Marie is truly beautiful) and the music fits the scenery. Out of the guest stars, Marcus Onilude gives the most interesting performance. The regulars continue to be lovely in their roles and Shantol Jackson does a solid job in her first outing.

. The humorous parts work and the murder mystery has its moments. The mystery starts off very intriguing, there is a nice amount of characters in this story and the solution ( Clarissa is the killer) was satisfying. The scenes between Florence and Neville were very well-done agreed.

    But....

. The case gets somewhat predictable and slow as the mystery goes along. The mystery lacks of good twists and turns. The ending with the second murder revealed was compelling, but it felt too little too late. There are some old ideas ( like staged kidnapping) put into the script, which was disappointing- I know this series is capable of doing much orginal work.

. Some of the acting sadly is not very good. Jake Fairbrother and Petra Letang in particular felt wooden in their roles. Aron Julius, Karise Yansen, though not bad, are not great either.

Overall, another fine day in Paradise.

    6/10 HK.
