Brad Anderson, a director whose credits include Session 9 and The Call, was recently hired to direct the zombie film Twilight of the Dead, which is based on a treatment left behind by the great George A. Romero when he passed away in 2017. Twilight of the Dead is expected to start filming in Puerto Rico by the end of this year – and Deadline reports that Anderson has already lined up the project he’ll be making after he works with Romero zombies. It’s a sci-fi action creature feature called Worldbreaker, which The Exchange will be presenting to potential international distributors at the upcoming American Film Market.
Scripted by Joshua Rollins (Infinite Storm), Worldbreaker has the following synopsis: Five years ago, a tear in the fabric of reality brought creatures to our world from an alternate dimension bent on our destruction. A father hides his daughter on an island to...

Back in 2021, it was revealed that the legendary George A. Romero (who passed away in 2017) had left behind a treatment for the “seventh and final installment” in his Dead franchise – following Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead. The story Romero had come up with used a title than many fans expected him to use for his follow-up to Day, Twilight of the Dead, and the team of Joe Knetter, Robert Lucas, and Paolo Zelati, who also worked on the treatment with Romero, were working on fleshing it out into a screenplay. Last month, we heard that Twilight of the Dead had secured funding from Roundtable Entertainment. And now we know who’s going to direct the film: Session 9 director Brad Anderson!

As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!

Prime Video is hoping to launch its own extended franchise universe in April with the premiere of international spy series “Citadel” from the minds of the Russo Brothers. The show stars Richard Madden, Priyanka Chopra, and Stanley Tucci, and is intended to be the first block of an interconnected story with different spinoffs in countries and regions around the world. The first version will begin streaming on April 28. In the show, the world is in the grips of Manticore, a criminal organization, and several former spies are recruited to restore order despite having their memories erased.

Vampirism has been treated as a metaphor for more prosaic addictions in movies before. In “Blood,” however, it’s one more hassle a recovering addict doesn’t need added to the burdens of her already discordant family life. Starring Michelle Monaghan as a mother just out of rehab whose young son gets bitten — then develops an insatiable appetite for the titular fluid — Brad Anderson’s film steers a middle course between dysfunctional domestic drama and supernatural horror. That balance doesn’t completely work. But solid performances and some strong, occasionally unpleasant content make this an involving if not entirely satisfying watch. Vertical Entertainment is releasing it to limited U.S. theaters this Friday, then On Demand platforms Jan. 31.

French director Thierry Donard, ‘the Fellini of adventure film-making’, shoots four sets of daredevils throwing themselves headlong into intense experience
Here’s an extreme sports documentary from Thierry Donard, who on account of his stunning photography has apparently been dubbed “the Fellini of adventure film-making”. True to his reputation, Reset combines some astonishingly beautiful images with guts-in-your-mouth thrilling sequences – though a bit more explanation would be helpful for viewers unfamiliar with the four sports featured.

The film follows a pair of shaggy-haired barefoot dudes, Jamie Lee and Malachi Templeton from New Zealand, as they take a running jump off Mont Blanc strapped to tiny paragliders which, to the untrained eye, look like glorified umbrellas. The pair hurtle down the mountain, inches above the rocks, whooping with the intoxicating, hedonistic thrill of it. Afterwards, Lee shrugs off the risk of...

Exclusive: NBC has put in development Level, a drama from writer Sean Finegan (Reset), Julie Anne Robinson’s CannyLads Productions and Universal TV where CannyLads is based.
Written by Finegan, the idea for Level was sparked by his experience with investing and startups. The series revolves around Charlie Hunt, who has the most brilliant business mind in history, but after a jarring family tragedy, Charlie quit chasing profits and repurposed his unique skills to shut down villains who live above the law by making whatever they’re doing an economic impossibility. He hits them where it hurts and levels the playing field for everyone else.
Finegan executive produces with CannyLads’ Robinson, who also is set to directs, and Kelly Pancho. Universal TV is the studio.
Finegan previously developed drama Capital at NBC with CannyLads and Carol Mendelsohn. He is currently writing Reset for Paramount, and recently produced Endless with Thunder Road and Gabriela Bacher.

"Why would I have my daughter's scarf, but not her?" Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for a mystery thriller titled Fractured, the latest from acclaimed American filmmaker Brad Anderson. Driving cross-country, Ray and his wife and daughter stop at a highway rest area where his daughter falls and breaks her arm. After a frantic rush to the hospital and a clash with the check-in nurse, Ray is finally able to get her to a doctor. While his wife and their daughter go downstairs for an Mri scan, Ray, exhausted, passes out in a chair in the lobby. Upon waking up, they have no record or knowledge of Ray's family ever being checked in. Where did they go? What happened to his family!? Sam Worthington stars, with Lily Rabe, Stephen Tobolowsky, Adjoa Andoh, Stephanie Sy, Lucy Capri, Lauren Cochrane, and Erik Athavale. Looks alright, I'm curious to find out what's up.

Satanic is a horror film picked up by Magnet Releasing, in 2014. Now, the film has a trailer. The clip shows four friends on the way to Coachella. On the trip, they decide to stop at real life occult sites. Events heat up when they meet a Satanic runaway. The film was written by Anthony Jaswinski, who also wrote the tepid horror feature Vanishing on 7th Street. Hopefully, Satanic will offer a few more scares, than this 2010 film. The official trailer is hosted here. A longer synopsis talks about an occult store owner. Their interaction with this suspicious character leads to another. A strange girl is saved from becoming a human sacrifice, only to die not much later. Now, four friends are hounded by a Satanic cult; they will need more blood, before the night is out. The film will have a limited theatrical run this Summer. The film is slated to release on July 1st,...

There's a lot to complain about regarding George Lucas' "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, and the actor who found himself the most frequently in the firing line was Canadian thesp Hayden Christensen who portrayed Anakin Skywalker.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, since sharks have apparently migrated to form weather patterns in the Sharknado franchise, along comes an action-thriller that looks set to put the toothsome terrors right back where they can scare us the most – between us and the shoreline. Such is the very tight premise of In The Deep, which Sony is apparently now courting director Louis Leterrier for.
The script for In The Deep comes with buzz already attached, as it landed squarely on both the 2014 Black List (the best unproduced scripts), and the 2014 Blood List (the best unproduced horror scripts), before being snapped up by Sony. It comes from screenwriter Anthony Jaswinski (Vanishing On 7th Street), and centres on the plight of a twenty-something woman who seeks to ease the pain of mourning her mother by surfing on an isolated beach. Louis Leterrier ("Now You See Me ," "Clash of the Titans") is in talks to direct the shark attack thriller "In the Deep" at Sony Pictures.
The story follows a young girl who is getting over her mother's death. Out surfing, she is attacked by a shark and finds herself stranded on a buoy, twenty yards off shore.
With a massive great white shark standing in her way between the buoy and the beach, she must get back to shore before succumbing to her injuries.

“The Machinist” director Brad Anderson has signed up to helm Sony’s “Bourne-esque spy tale” (aren’t they all?) “Shadow Run,” according to Deadline. The script, written by “Cliffhanger” writer Joe Gazzam, was the subject a frenzied bidding war earlier this year and is being kept under tight wraps with no plot details revealed yet. Truth be told, an action thriller isn’t too much of a stretch for Anderson’s sensibilities, since his filmography has trended towards genre fare with films like “Session 9” and “Vanishing on 7th Street.” If anything, at least “Shadow Run” has a bigger potential to actually reach audiences, as opposed to his latest output, “Stonehearst Asylum,” which saw release last month unbeknownst to anyone. Here’s hoping the next one washes away the stink of Anderson’s Halle Berry-starring “The Call.” Jon M. Chu, who has made dance ("Step Up 2: The Streets...

After last week’s news about Netflix securing The Blacklist for a record fee, a similar story came to light this week concerning the pre Batman prequel series Gotham. Now rather than getting it day and date after Us broadcast as per Breaking Bad and From Dusk Till Dawn, Gotham’s entire run will just arrive on Netflix after it’s finished its TV broadcast. Worse news is that this means you have to wait for Channel 5 to get their finger out and schedule it on one of their three channels and then muck it around the schedule just to confuse you further and for it to finish its run there. Kind of takes the wind out the sails doesn’t it? I wouldn’t expect to see Gotham on Netflix until this time next year at best but we will see.

The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnet Releasing announced today that they have acquired worldwide rights to Satanic, a new supernatural teen-horror film currently in script stage.
Satanic will be the feature film debut of director Jeff Hunt, a veteran television director with experience on shows such as Fringe, Hawaii 5-0, CSI, Nikita, Person of Interest and Dark Blue. Anthony Jawinski (Kristy, Vanishing on 7th Street) wrote the screenplay.

The film Kristy has been developed under a few names. Originally, this film was titled Random. Later, it was renamed to Satanic and it has been retitled to its first name, Kristy. Recently, a trailer has been released for this horror title. The clip shows Justine (Haley Bennett) alone on a college campus; but, a few sychophants have remained behind. The trailer is a compelling one, which shows one woman fighting against the many. For more on the story, Justine is confronted by a group of violent outcasts. Several students, on an lonely college campus, must band together and fight against this brutal gang. But, who are these sadists? And, what do they want? Justine will have to search for answers to these questions or become just another victim. The film has been developed by director Oliver Blackburn (Donkey Punch), from Anthony Jaswinski's (Vanishing on 7th Street) script. As well,...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

After years of directing better-than-average independent sleeper thrillers . except for 2010.s misstep Vanishing on 7th Street . Brad Anderson had a bit of a hit on his hands with The Call, which has earned $40 million in just over two weeks with just a $13 million budget. Lest one thought he.d be going for something more commercial, Anderson isn.t that kind of a guy. His latest project, the psychological thriller Eliza Graves, just added Jim Sturgess to its cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sturgess has been on a sci-fi run as of late, with Juan Solanas. Brad Anderson may not be a “name” director but his clever thrillers Session 9, set in a mental hospital, The Machinist, featuring Christian Bale as a deranged insomniac and Vanishing on 7th Street, about people who disappear after coming in contact with creepy shadows, reflect his talents as a suspense storyteller. Anderson replaces original director Joel Schumacher on The Call (originally called The Hive), about a dedicated operator at Los Angeles’ 911 emergency control center named Jordan Taylor (Halle Berry), who leaves the call center in order to help a young woman (Abigail Spencer) kidnapped by a serial killer (Michael Eklund). The Call, written by Richard D’Ovidio, Nicole D’Ovidio and Jon Bokenkamp, is a mixed genre bag meaning that it stands tall thanks to Berry’s performance as a strong, believable heroine. Yet, at the same time, The Call steadily sinks under the weight of a redundant female victim...

Brad Anderson’s particular brand of intensity first caught our attention in 2001’s low-budget indie horror hit Session 9. Anderson’s follow-up thriller The Machinist helped propel a much-praised (and emaciated) Christian Bale on the path to becoming the Dark Knight. With 2008’s Transsiberian and 2010’s Vanishing on 7th Street to his credit – as well as a fistful of Fringe episodes and a Masters of Horror installment – Anderson has shown little sign of stopping.
His latest film, the Halle Berry-starring The Call, is a breathlessly paced ride racing into theaters Friday, March 15th; and he’ll be back behind the camera soon for Eliza Graves, an adaptation – written by Joseph Gangemi (Fear Itself) – of Edgar Allan Poe’s short "The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether."
We caught up with Anderson last week to ask him about the film.

On the topic of WWE Studios (see: previous post on Dead Man Down), it turns out that they are actually involved in another movie that is coming to theatres next month as well. The Call is a thriller previously known as The Hive that was moved up from a late summer release slot after the Carrie remake was delayed. Halle Berry plays a 911 operator who receives an emergency call from a kidnapped girl (Abigail Breslin) and gets pulled into the situation upon realizing that she knows the kidnapper. I have to admit, the trailer looks pretty generic but apparently early test screenings were strong which is why Sony decided to give it a wide release. I guess that doesn't necessarily mean the movie is actually good, however, the movie also happens to be directed by Brad Anderson (The Machinist, Transsiberian) which has me moderately curious. Unfortunately, his last movie Vanishing on 7th Street...

What jerk would kidnap the cute kid from "Little Miss Sunshine"?
It's a cruel world filled with rampaging serial killers in "The Call," though luckily Halle Berry is on the case to take on evil as only a 911 dispatcher can.
In the new thriller from director Brad Anderson, Berry plays a veteran emergency operator who inadvertently causes the death of a caller, a mistake from which she looks to be redeemed when a kidnapping situation (involving "Little Miss Sunshine" herself, Abigail Breslin) once again puts her in contact with the killer.
Yeah, it's the kind of movie where perfect cell phone service at all times is essential, as well as the ability for both parties to always hear each other perfectly, even during high-speed car chases.
Brad Anderson has made some pretty terrific films, including "Session 9," "The Machinist" and "Transsiberian." However, "Vanishing on 7th Street" left much to be desired,...

Director Brad Anderson knows how to create an intense atmosphere. He may not be a household name and his films may not really get any box office results, but with movies like Session 9, The Machinist, and Transsiberian on his resume he has proven himself as one of the better horror directors working today (even Vanishing on 7th Street, which had a litany of problems, was still creepy and effective). He's spent the bulk of the last two years working on a number of television series, including Fringe, Boardwalk Empire, Person of Interest and The Killing, but this year he's making his way back to the big screen with The Call. Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for the new thriller, which brings together stars Halle Berry, Abigail Breslin, Morris Chestnut, Michael Eklund and Michael Imperioli. Okay, can we say that whatever good will Brad Anderson had from the (somewhat overrated) "The Machinist" has now officially evaporated? Since then, he's delivered "Transsiberian" and "Vanishing On 7th Street," but mostly worked in TV. And now he has teamed up with WWE (yes, the wrestling company) for "The Call" (formerly "The Hive"). And it's a movie that looks so cheap, we're surprised it's getting a theatrical release. The trailer has dropped today for the thriller, and while it features the talents of Halle Berry, it seems that she only took the job because she gets to sit in a chair for most of the movie. The actress plays a 911 operator who tries to atone for her mistake in getting a caller killed, by helping that kid from "Little Miss Sunshine" who is kidnapped by a maniac who can't find a parking spot (or something). It's basically two single-location...

Ingenue Haley Bennett has had a rocky rise since her screen debut with a supporting role as pop sensation Cora Corman in the forgettable romantic comedy Music and Lyrics in 2007. A lead role in the horror movie The Haunting of Molly Hartley followed, but that flick was scorned by critics, and her next lead turn in 2009's The Hole didn't debut domestically until this year. However, Bennett's prospects are on the rise as she is currently filming Terrence Malick's latest feature.not To The Wonder or Knight of Cups, the other one.which may not have a title but does boast an insanely prestigious ensemble that includes Michael Fassbender, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, and Cate Blanchett. Very little is known about Malick's nameless feature, but already its scoring Bennett renewed buzz as she's signed on to return to horror and leading roles for Kristy.
