On the surface, last weekend’s two-day, three-show sweep for “Anora” appeared an unlikely surge for a film that had been losing momentum as an Oscar favorite.
In reality, though, what happened is probably less of a case of “Anora” rallying than it is a simple matter of Oscar watchers learning more about what voters have probably been thinking all along.
The lesson began on Friday evening at about 6:55 p.m. With one award left to go at the Critics Choice Awards, “Anora” seemed to be about fourth or fifth on the list of likely Best Picture winners. It had gone 0-for-5 at the Golden Globes in early January and had gone 0-for-6 with Critics Choice voters going into the final award of the night – and not only had “Wicked” director Jon M. Chu just won the Best Director award in an upset that gave one of the top...

The final Oscar voting period has begun, and the year of multiple contenders has finally found its frontrunner.
For months, Hollywood has searched for its strongest best picture candidate. Now, with a sweep at the Critics Choice, Directors Guild of America and Producers Guild of America awards, Sean Baker’s “Anora” has emerged as the film to beat. The one-two punch of a DGA and PGA win has historically been a strong indicator of Oscar success. Since the co-existence of both guilds in 1994, only six films have lost best picture at the Oscars after securing both prizes: “Apollo 13” (1995), “Saving Private Ryan” (1998), “Brokeback Mountain” (2005), “Gravity” (2013), “La La Land” (2016) and “1917” (2019).
The $6 million indie about an outer-borough sex worker has stood out in a field of blockbusters, biopics and musicals. It’s one of only two Oscar nominees with a perfect precursor record, earning nominations from every major guild and securing key Oscar nods.

‘Anora’ skyrockets to No. 1 in Best Picture Oscar odds after huge upsets at PGA, DGA, Critics Choice

Oscar pundits everywhere have been feverishly updating their predictions following Anora‘s sweep of top prizes at this weekend’s Critics Choice, Producers Guild, and Directors Guild awards. In fact, the film is now back at No. 1 in Gold Derby’s Best Picture Oscar odds.
Sean Baker‘s independent film about a Brooklyn sex worker (Mikey Madison) who marries into the wrong family previously topped our rankings between September and January, but lost its first place position soon after it was skunked at the Golden Globes. That’s when The Brutalist, Brady Corbet‘s period piece about a Holocaust survivor (Adrien Brody) who hopes to achieve the American Dream, took the lead in the Gold Derby odds.

Maybe Anora was the frontrunner all along.
In the weeks since the Oscar nominations were announced, Oscar pundits and awards strategists have treated the wide-open Best Picture race like an adaptation of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, searching somewhat fruitlessly for a contender that felt “just right.” However, on Saturday night, Sean Baker won Best Director at the Directors Guild Awards, and about an hour later, Baker and his film took top honors at the Producers Guild Awards. What had been considered a toss-up is now trending back to where the consensus was throughout the fall.
How did we get here, and what comes next? Ahead, here are three takeaways from the big weekend for Anora.

Film Editing is often the below-the-line Oscar category most frequently linked to Best Picture, even more since the Academy committed to 10 Best Picture nominations.
All five of this year’s editing nominees also received Best Picture nominations, but only three have corresponding nominations for the film’s director. Four of this year’s five nominees received nominations from the American Cinema Editors (Ace) for the Ace Eddies, which have been delayed until March 14 due to the fires in Los Angeles. Noticeably missing from those nominations was The Brutalist, despite being nominated by the Academy editing branch.
According to the Gold Derby odds, Conclave would win this category, with The Brutalist close behind. However, this might be a more difficult category to pick. In the past, there have been unexpected winners, like Bohemian Rhapsody and The Girl With the Dragon Tatoo. In 2022, Coda was a rare Best Picture winner that wasn’t nominated for its editing.

The Academy Awards have staged some iconic showdowns. Think of the tension around “La La Land” versus “Moonlight,” “12 Years a Slave” versus “Gravity” or “The Godfather” versus “Cabaret.” Each was a nail-biter that kept viewers on the edge of their seats. But what happens when six films — “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” — are all serious contenders for Hollywood’s most coveted prize? Enter “The Year Without the Frontrunner,” as Variety aptly dubbed it.
So, what is the pathway for each contender?
With 13 nominations, “Emilia Pérez” seems to have the logical edge (although recent controversies could derail that assertion). It has key guild nods and below-the-line Oscar mentions. But in this unpredictable year, historical trends are no guarantee. Major upcoming ceremonies like DGA, PGA and SAG may clarify the race — or make it even messier.

The Voice contestants have one goal during the show’s blind auditions: to get at least one coach to turn their chair. A four-chair turn means a contestant has something unique. To move out of this part of the competition, singers have to pick a song that will be recognizable but not one that has been performed so much that viewers and coaches are sick of hearing it. Here are the top 7 songs that almost always guarantee The Voice chair turns.
The top ‘Voice’ chair-turning songs
ActionNetwork analyzed the top chair-turning tunes during The Voice Blind Auditions. The surprising list of songs includes standards, pop classics, and iconic rock tunes.
The number one song receiving the most chair-turns on The Voice is 2006’s “Gravity” by John Mayer. Thus far, “Gravity” has an astonishing 13 chair turns with a total of four performances.
Coming in second is “Angel of Montgomery” by John Prine.

It’s hard to believe, but the queen of charming rom-coms and edge-of-your-seat thrillers Sandra Bullock, once strolled into Razzie history like it was her personal red carpet. Back then, she didn’t just take home a Razzie; she made history with the kind of record that still feels impossible to match.

There’s no obvious 2025 Oscars frontrunner like last year’s “Oppenheimer” (Universal). This year, that studio’s blockbuster stage-to-screen musical “Wicked” will be one of 10 lauded frontrunners duking it out for Best Picture.
Another musical, the Spanish-language French Oscar entry “Emilia Pérez” (Netflix), is poised to dominate the delayed Oscar nominations announcement on January 23 with 12 nods, by my estimation, followed by papal thriller “Conclave” (Focus Features) with 10, and “The Brutalist” (A24), a post-World War II drama about an émigré architect (Adrien Brody) produced for under $10 million, with nine. All display the scale, scope, and ambition of a potential Oscar winner.
Based on the hit stage musical, “Wicked” should nab eight nominations and boasts more stateside support and a SAG Ensemble nod, as does “Emilia Pérez,” which also won five European Film Awards (including Best Film) and four Golden Globes including Best Comedy/Musical, and scored 11 BAFTA nominations to “Wicked’s” seven.

Sci-fi movies often prioritize stories and visuals over scientific accuracy, because their goal is to entertain, not educate. Many concepts, like space travel or futuristic technology, are based on imagination rather than real science, or at least science that is currently based on our understanding of physics still far away.
Filmmakers may also take creative liberties to make the plot more thrilling or easier to follow for the audience. Most people aren’t really all that bothered by these inaccuracies, but Neil deGrasse Tyson is not most people.
Celebrity scientist Tyon often points out scientific inaccuracies in Hollywood movies, especially in sci-fi films, not to spoil the fun but to encourage better accuracy. He often highlights unrealistic concepts, like artificial gravity or sound in space, and provides corrections based on real science.

Sandra Bullock has come a long way since she got her start in Hollywood. But a few years into her career, she had one particularly rough experience that changed the way she saw the film industry.

Bullock touched on her childhood a little bit in a 2015 interview with Variety, which shaped the woman she’d eventually become. “Wicked,” Universal’s Broadway musical adaptation, and FX/Hulu’s “Shogun,” a drama series set in feudal Japan, dominated the 2025 Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, collecting five nods apiece to lead the film and TV races. The announcement comes three days after the Golden Globes and on the day Oscar nomination voting opens, and it delivered its share of jaw-dropping surprises and well-deserved recognition for some of the awards season’s top contenders.
“Wicked” soared to historic heights, tying for the most nominations in SAG history with five mentions. This achievement places the Jon M. Chu-directed adaptation of the Broadway sensation in an elite company alongside previous five-time nominees like “Shakespeare in Love” (1998), “Chicago” (2002), “Doubt” (2008), “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022), and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022). Of those, “Shakespeare,” “Chicago,” and “Everything Everywhere” went on to win the SAG Award for best cast ensemble before clinching the Academy Award for best picture.

This article discusses the death of a young child.
2013's Gravity presents Sandra Bullock's Dr. Ryan Stone with various challenges and potentially deadly scenarios as she tries to return to Earth after a disaster in orbit, but the debris she continually weathers represents something much deeper than just wayward satellite fragments. Gravity is widely regarded as one of Sandra Bullock's best movies, and a big part of what makes it so revered is the layered narrative and beautiful subtlety in its storytelling. With George Clooney as Bullock's only real co-star, Gravity's tiny cast is still brilliantly led by the iconic Hollywood actress.

When Sandra Bullock Called Speed 2 “An Embarrassing Experience”: “I’m Still Embarrassed I Was In It”

Sandra Bullock Reveals Speed 2 Regrets ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Sandra Bullock has no qualms about admitting that Speed 2: Cruise Control is a movie she wishes she could undo. In a chat, while promoting her movie The Lost City, Bullock openly revealed, “I have one no one came around to, and I’m still embarrassed I was in. It’s called Speed 2.” And honestly? She’s not wrong. The 1997 sequel to the blockbuster Speed had a sluggish plot that might as well have been cruising in reverse.
For those who somehow missed it, Speed 2 centered on a slow-moving cruise ship heading straight for an oil tanker. You read that right: a boat, not a bus, and the threat? Not a bomb, but an inevitable collision. Talk about an underwhelming follow-up to the high-octane Speed (1994), where Bullock’s character, Annie, and Keanu Reeves Jack had to keep a bus...

Cynthia Erivo knows how to do this. Erivo has already dazzled audiences with her powerhouse performances on stage and screen. Still, her turn as Elphaba in Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked” has cemented her place as one of her generation’s most versatile and captivating artists.
The first half of the two-part Wicked saga is already a sensation, and Erivo’s portrayal of the misunderstood green-skinned witch is winning accolades. Yet, as she reveals to Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, this journey is far more than just a career milestone — it’s personal.
In her approach to Elphaba, Erivo drew on her own experiences. “I know what it feels like to walk into a room where people don’t want you to be there,” Erivo shares on this week’s episode. “I know what it feels like to be bullied, to feel rejected, to feel like you’re not loved.

Pay disparity in Hollywood has been a serious topic of debate for years, wherein people have often criticized male stars for making several times more than their female colleagues, despite both being the leads in several cases. However, one actress turned the tables, when she out-earned her superstar male colleagues like Dwayne Johnson and Robert Downey Jr. Well, it’s none other than Oscar-winner Sandra Bullock.

Bagging a staggering amount for just one film while starring alongside veteran legend George Clooney, Sandra Bullock not only earned more than her co-star and other highest-paid male actors but also became the highest-paid actress in the world. Establishing a record that will undoubtedly take years to get toppled, Bullock left Margot Robbie, Cameron Diaz, and even Reese Witherspoon in the dirt.

Space exploration movies have the power to grip audiences more than many other genres, because they speak to the deep human sense of wonder and trepidation. As the world gets more connected and less mysterious, outer space represents the few mysteries still remaining in our universe. The scale of the cosmos lends itself to stories of both optimism and despair, and space exploration movies can be science-fiction or more realistic dramas.
1902's A Trip to the Moon shows that space exploration has been a part of sci-fi cinema since the dawn of film. Although movies have gotten longer, more complex and more sophisticated since the time of Georges Méliès, the basic idea that space holds untapped riches and strange creatures is the same. The best space exploration movies can inspire a sense of awe and majesty, but they should also tell a grounded human story.

Sandra Bullock has proven time and time again that she’s one of Hollywood’s finest, as she delivers standout performances across a range of genres. Whether she’s stuck in space trying to survive in Gravity or fighting to protect her family from unseen horrors in Bird Box, the actor knows how to bring intensity and heart to her roles. What makes Bullock’s best movies so unforgettable is her uncanny ability to blend action with emotion.
Having been in some of the best movies of her generation, Bullock also stands out for her ability to play characters who are both strong and deeply human. Whether she’s in a heart-stopping thriller or an emotional drama, she brings a level of vulnerability that makes her performances so memorable. As we wind down the year with holiday cheer and comfort viewing, IndieWire’s craft team picks the best TV cinematography of 2024. We weren’t seeking the slickest-looking eye candy, nor even the most elegantly shot series (although many of these projects are striking), but instead sought titles in which the cinematography was integral to the vision of its creator and elevated the storytelling of some of the year’s best shows.
While the long and repeated grind of television production can make the art of cinematography more of a team sport working under the umbrella of a series’ visual bible, in the age of limited series, there were a number cinematographers on this list who shot a vast majority, if not the entire series, and this list features a number of director/cinematographer combinations whose collaboration is more commonly associated with feature film production. Which also might explain the...

In cinema, films based on true stories are often considered “safe,” but that couldn’t be further from the case for Los Frikis. Produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller (the Spider-Verse movies), Los Frikis takes its challenging subject matter and infuses it with genuine heart, making it an irresistible crowd-pleaser despite all the odds stacked against it.
Los Frikis Review
Los Frikis tells the story of a group of impoverished punk rockers living in Cuba after the collapse of the Soviet Union who decide to inject themselves with HIV to allow them to live at a state-sponsored sanitarium for AIDS patients. The film is based on true events that many in America have likely never heard of, but it feels incredibly necessary nevertheless.
For an independent production, Los Frikis is actually a very strong movie from a technical standpoint. The cinematography and set design are very impressive, making...

At the risk of sounding like Nicole Kidman: We all know the feelings that unite an audience in a movie theater. Yet when I went to see the rereleased “Interstellar,” I was struck by a new feeling. Taking my seat in front of the IMAX screen at the AMC Lincoln Square, I was honestly shocked to see that at a 2:45 p.m. Friday showing of a 10-year-old movie, an incredibly large theater, with dramatic banked seating — the only true IMAX theater in Manhattan — was totally packed.
This was the kickoff of the film’s second weekend. (Last weekend it took in a neat $4.6 million on 165 screens.) And before the movie had even started, it struck me that those of us in the audience were already profoundly united in wanting to reexperience “Interstellar.” There were some, of course, who had never seen it. Yet this was basically a revival...

“Have you ever wondered what makes a Christmas story a Christmas story?”
This is the underlying question to the Disney+ short film An Almost Christmas Story, and producer Alfonso Cuarón heartily laughs at the notion that he and director David Lowery were trying to settle the age-old debate about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not. The 24-minute animated short — Cuarón’s third-and-final installment in his holiday collection that dates back to 2022 — is based on the true story of an owl that was rescued from the Rockefeller Plaza Christmas tree in 2020. Cuarón’s story, in tandem with Lowery and Jack Thorne’s script, teaches their young owl named Moon (Cary Christopher) what Christmas is as he seeks to reunite with his family.
Ultimately, the Oscar-winning Cuarón believes that the definition of a Christmas story doesn’t have to be broken down into an exact science. Die Hard may...

Actress Sandra Bullock has starred in a wide variety of genres in her over thirty-year career. Starting out with Speed, Bullock quickly grew close to the public with her rom-coms but then moved towards the dramatic territory. She won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role in The Blind Side and was once the highest-paid actress in the world.
While Bullock got her breakthrough with charming films like Miss Congeniality, While You Were Sleeping, and others, she said she would bid goodbye to the rom-com genre after her film with Hugh Grant Two Weeks Notice. The actress fared well with the risky move in her career, unlike her contemporary Meg Ryan, who ruined her career after trying something new.

Sandra Bullock is one of the most recognized actresses in the world. The Miss Congeniality star is known for her balance of intense and feel-good roles as well as her relatable off-screen persona. She has won the Academy Award once for The Blind Side and was also nominated for Gravity. She was also one of the highest-paid actresses.
Bullock has achieved a lot in her over thirty-year career and continues to play intense and noteworthy roles. Most people can’t conceive of the hardships and strife inflicted on others. It’s not entirely their fault. Television places onlookers behind a screen while horrors lurk outside their door, and news outlets are questionable these days at best. What I’m trying to say is oppression is omnipresent, and Los Frikis, the latest film from The Peanut Butter Falcon directors Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz, is ready to throw audiences into a mosh pit of drama for a story about breaking the chains that bind us. What? You don’t believe me? Watch today’s emotionally charged trailer for Los Frikis and then decide.
Inspired by true events, Los Frikis is a coming-of-age story set in early 90s Cuba, where a group of punk rockers in search of freedom deliberately inject HIV to live at a government-run treatment home so they can create their own utopia. Produced by...

Matt Damon collaborated with filmmaker Ridley Scott for the first time for the 2015 feature The Martian. But the sci-fi project most likely would’ve looked a lot different if it wasn’t for a particular supervillain feature.

Damon’s 2015 movie The Martian famously saw the actor playing a stranded astronaut on a barren planet. Although it was initially directed by Ridley Scott, Scott wasn’t the first person tapped to direct the film. The project initially went to the film’s screenwriter Drew Goddard, who brought The Martian to Damon’s attention. Goddard once asserted that he wrote the acclaimed blockbuster simply because he loved the book it was based on, which was written by Andy Weir.
“I read Andy’s book and I loved it. I started from that.

Roland Emmerich's movies are known for being visual spectacles in the disaster and sci-fi genres, and while some have been big box office hits, he has never been the most critically admired filmmaker. He has worked alongside some big Hollywood stars, such as Will Smith, Kurt Russell, and Jake Gyllenhaal. He has also explored the end of the world through various points of view, from natural disasters to alien invasions. While many of his films have been critically panned, Emmerich’s filmography has earned over $3 billion worldwide, making him one of the highest-grossing directors of all time.
Along with directing, Emmerich typically also contributes to film projects as a writer and producer, giving him greater control over the end results. This has also allowed him to focus on the large-scale spectacles he is best known for, especially within the disaster genre, potentially including Independence Day 3. This has earned the...

Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity showed what existential horrors could happen should an astronaut find themselves alone in the treacherous vastness of space, but Last Breath shows what has happened in the incredible true story of a diver who is trapped in the terrifyingly unknown depths of the sea. Woody Harrelson stars in the film with Shang-Chi and Kim’s Convenience star Simu Liu. Harrelson recently had Liu on his podcast, Where Everybody Knows Your Name, where the two alluded to all the inside jokes and stories that were experienced on this film. Focus Features has now released the trailer to this dramatic new thriller.

Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón turned down an offer to make a James Bond movie. “I was troubled about the idea of doing it,” he said.
Who will direct the next James Bond movie? Who will star in the next James Bond movie? At the time of writing, those remain open questions. One filmmaker we can probably mark as out of the running, though, is Children Of Men and Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón.
The filmmaker has revealed that he was once “offered a Bond film” but ultimately turned it down – partly because the thought of making it made him feel uneasy, and partly because he had a pivotal dinner conversation with fellow director Joel Coen.

When it comes to Hollywood’s handsome hunks, no one can beat George Clooney. Think of charm, sophistication, and that dazzling smile that graced red carpets and screens for decades. But behind that aura lies a career that’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, especially when it comes to the box office.
Sure, Clooney’s Hollywood royalty, but his journey in the film industry has had its fair share of big wins and surprising stumbles. Take Gravity for instance, a cinematic masterpiece that grossed a hefty box office success and cemented Clooney’s place as a bankable star. But besides floating in space with Sandra Bullock, Clooney went through challenges before hitting another jackpot.

If you have been keeping up with Dancing With The Stars Season 33, it is no surprise that former New England Patriots player Danny Amendola — and his professional dance partner, Witney Carson — have coasted their way to the finale of the reality television series.
After all, their scores have been impressive (to say the least):
DWTS Premiere — Tango to “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by Shaboozey & David Guetta (20/30) “Oscars Night” — Jive to “Danger Zone” from Top Gun (21/30) “Soul Train Night” — Foxtrot to “Dancing Machine” by The Jackson 5 (30/40) “Hair Metal Night” — Paso Doble to “Livin’ On A Prayer” by Bon Jovi (30/40) “Dedication Night” — Contemporary to “Unsteady (Erich Lee Gravity Remix)” by X Ambassadors (36/40) “Disney Night” — Jazz to “Bye Bye Bye” from Deadpool & Wolverine (27/30) “Halloween Nightmares Night” — Argentine Tango to “Poison” by Ravn (28/30) DWTS 500th Episode — Quickstep to "Hey Pachuco" by Royal Crown Revue (27/30) DWTS Semi-Final — Viennese Waltz to "Gravity" by John Mayer...

Sandra Bullock has constantly faced challenges as a mom of Black kids, even more so because she raised them as a single parent. Her split from ex-husband Jesse James was devastating, but she did not let it get in the way of becoming the mother that her children deserve.

Similarly, fellow actress Angelina Jolie has six children, some of whom are of Asian and African descent. Being a mom to kids of diverse cultures could be fun and tough at the same time, especially since they are followed by the media and are always in the spotlight.
Sandra Bullock Had to Teach Her Kids About Racial Discrimination
Becoming a parent is daunting enough, but being a white mother to black children has even more pressure as society always has something to say. Sandra Bullock has been through this many times in her life,...

Wicked opened in theaters this past weekend to glowing reviews and an explosive box office; the movie has made $164 million worldwide, already recouping its $145 million budget (although it probably has a while to go before it makes back what I imagine was an equally huge marketing budget; you couldn't avoid hearing about this thing). It's a hit.
I loved the movie. I'm a big fan of musicals generally, but they have a spotty reputation at the movies. Wicked adapted Stephen Schwartz's musical with all the glitz and gusto it needed, helped along by excellent casting in the form of Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, the future Wicked Witch of the West and Good Witch of the North respectively.
After wading through middling movie musicals like Sweeney Todd, Les Misérables, and Joker: Folie à Deux — all of which give too much screentime to performers who are...

When the sing-along screenings of “Wicked” go down beginning Christmas Day, I’ll be there — but not because I have any intention of personally raising my voice in song. I do have a natural curiosity about what luck a full house of fans will have in singing along with musical-theater songs this sophisticated… this full of stops and starts and sudden shifts from major to minor chords. There’ll surely be some trained singers and actors filling the AMC seats who can keep up with these tunes. For the rest of us, there may come a realization: I’m not that girl, and probably neither are you.
So what other reason is there to look forward to the official multiplex sing-alongs, if not, like, singing along? That’s easy: the subtitles.
Which is to say: The songs in “Wicked” are so good — some of the best that musical theater has ever produced,...

Warning: The following contains Spoilers for Wicked! While the film is mostly faithful to its source material, director Jon M. Chu explains why Wicked ends on "Defying Gravity". The signature song, composed by Stephen Schwartz, was originally recorded by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth and released in 2003. It's sung solo by Elphaba during the ending of the first act, after she discovers The Wizard of Oz's sinister plan against the animals. The 2024 Wicked movie, however, extends the length by breaking up the song into more sections and serving as its ending.
In honor of the movie's release, Chu told GamesRadar+ why they had to make drastic changes to "Defying Gravity" in the movie's cinematic ending. The director revealed that they wanted to use the original version, but it wouldn't reflect "the end of this epic journey," and the decision to break up the song was "a necessity." Chu stressed...

It’s Musicals Week at IndieWire. With “Wicked” about to sparkle over theaters, we’re celebrating the best of the movie-musical genre.
Editor’s note: The following interviews contains spoilers for a fun musical surprise in “Wicked.“
In Universal’s big-screen “Wicked,” there’s plenty for fans of the original musical to love. For those who have spent the better part of the last 20 years listening to the Grammy-winning cast recording (hi!), a big question heading into the film was if original Broadway Elphaba and Glinda, Tony-winning Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, respectively, would make an appearance.
Happily, they do, and it ranks among the very best treats of the adaptation. In the film, when Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande) head to the Emerald City to meet the Wizard, they first stumble around the technicolor, magical metropolis — and even catch a little “welcome to our town” performance.
