I give this show a single season before it gets axed.
I knew from the initial previews for this show that it wasn't going to be anything special, but at least it was new. I consider myself an avid science fiction fan, and to me Falling Skies is just more of the soap-fi made in the same vein as the now defunct Stargate Universe and Caprica and NuBSG. What is it with these writers who feel the compulsion to tip the balance towards drama and interpersonal relationships instead of science when doing science fiction? This show opens with a child's crayon drawings depicting the invasion of earth by aliens,m and part of the aftermath, and there is a child speaking during the slow pans over the drawings, interpreting his creation. REALLY? I cant go into details without spoiling your "fun", so I wont. Suffice it to say that watching this two hour premiere feels like four hours, and you don't really get an idea where this is headed. I did find the CGI impressive, but the over-emphasis on the Mason family (the central protagonists in this show) takes away from any feeling of entertainment a viewer might want from a show like this. I want to get the backstory on the ALIENS, not the Mason family. Why did they come to earth? What do they want and how did they find us? ABC's V explored this is a very entertaining way, and had decent drama. But alas, ABC was unable to get the viewership numbers it needed to keep the show. It would have made an AWESOME cable show on a smaller network like Syfy. But that is spilt milk. This milk has just been poured and its already half soured IMO. Im certain that the show will explore more stuff about the aliens, but the style of the show already reveals that it is an interpersonal drama and not really science fiction. Soap-fi doesn't work...haven't TPTB realized that by now? This is soap-fi, not sci-fi. Its drama dressed in a space suit, and the alien invasion seems more like a backdrop than a central theme in this show. How can I get this just from the premiere? I shouldn't be able to, but its possible because this is a derivative show. Nothing new or fresh.
