  • A slightly amusing film with entertaining incidents , silly messes and enjoyable love stories . Comical as well as romantic comedy is loaded with irony , humor with tongue-in-cheek , jokes and nutty fun . It deals with Eliseo (Javier Cámara) , he is a good-tempered person but ugly , lame and single , he wishes eagerly find his real love . But he hasn't met the woman of his life and has never known love , though he believes the best of her life is still to come . While Nati (Carmen Machi) is ugly , missing a breast and separated . She thinks that the worst of his life is still to come . She not know the true love , too . Eliseo directs a musical band formed by villagers (as Lluís Villanueva , Hugo Silva , Tristán Ulloa as the priest) . Then , there happens some inevitable , Eliseo falls for Nati who results to be the woman of his life ; however , being married to his brother . The death of Eliseo's mother (Petra Martínez) reunites them again but things go wrong .

Spanish rural comedy filled with amusement , laughs , bemusing situations and ordinary actors . It is an agreeable story about family , relatives : brothers-in-law , sisters-in-laws , parents , friends and their usual life problems . Funny comedy with romantic touches here and there ; being full of entertainment , humor and sheer amusement . Nice and fun Spanish comedy starred by good actors , including mirth , ridiculous situations , brief touches of drama and with a distinctly Spanish sense of style . It turns out to be pleasantly fun that offers no intellectual stimulus whatsoever ; an exercise in pure amusement in which entertainment and fun are guaranteed . The diverting as well crazy characters are quite odd , grotesque and weird and the film races on at incredible speed . The main premise deals with an offbeat couple with a lot of problems , all of them mixed up in all kinds of absurd , hilarious and even romantic incidents . The principal issue about the continuous meetings and ongoings disagreements between the two protagonists and their intertwined loves , it is so repetitive and that makes it a little boring . This is a slightly bemusing film with entertaining events , giggles , emotion and agreeable love stories , being inspired by the TV series "7 Vidas¨ . Humor is sometimes cheesy and gross-out with numerous picaresque situations such as sex jokes , profanities and absurd scenes . The film explores the motley relationship among a varied group of villagers and their peculiar love stories , being well played by known actors . However , it moves in fits and starts most of which would be desirable , with more traps the viewer resists any kind , and some moments of enjoyment and others quite a few embarrassing ; so , the tone of the film is light-hearted and the most part results to be rich in implausibilities and absurdities . The motion picture was written by the same director , Nacho G Velilla , an expert writer/director of notorious comedies . This is a 2010 typical Spanish comedy with the customary ingredients such as agreeable humor topped with a little bit of original touches here and there ; including mayhem , confusion , disconcerting deeds , loving triangles and a lot of fun . The movie is played mostly for laughs , but as well contains several absurd and dumb happenings . A few of the scenes are amusing , they elicit chuckles but no serious laughters . The picture attempts to spread optimism about the events of life , friendship , marriage , fidelity , optimism , and love , including its amusing sides as well as sad ones . The roles in this film are all lovable despite being rather pathetic and silly . The picture benefits a likable main cast such as Javier Cámara as the ugly, lame , and unmarried villager who has a last chance to find happiness and Carmen Machi as the sympathetic and good-natured separated woman who has found , at last , the man of her life but , even so, has never experienced true love . Support cast is pretty good , formed by prestigious secondaries such as Ingrid Rubio , María Pujalte , Julián López , Silvia Casanova , Kira Miró , Tristán Ulloa , Carmen Ruiz , among others .

The cinematography by David Omedes is luxurious as well as colorful , being filmed in Huesca , Aragon . Atmospheric and lively musical score by Juanjo Javierre , adding some catching and popular songs . "To Hell with the Ugly" being skillfully directed by Nacho G Velilla , and it turned out to a big success at 2010 Spanish box office . This director was born in Zaragoza , Aragon , location where he often shoots his flicks . He is a good director , producer and writer, expert on comedies and especially known for ¨Villaviciosa De Al Lado¨ , ¨No Manches Frida¨ , ¨No Lo Llames Amor... Llámalo X¨ , ¨Perdiendo El Norte¨ , as well as his successful TV series , such as ¨Aida¨ with Carmen Machi , ¨Siete Vidas¨ , ¨Fenómenos¨ , ¨Buscando El Norte¨ . Rating : Average but passable , 5.5/10 . The picture will appeal to Spanish comedy enthusiasts , though it also packs bad taste , piggy humor , sexual scenes , profanity and big fun .

Eliseo had been chatting with an unknown woman on line. As the story begins, he is about to meet her, finally. He is carrying a red rose as a way for her to know it is him. Eliseo is able to look at the inside of the restaurant where they will meet, seeing his date. As he approaches her table, he notices her rose is on the floor. The woman evidently took one look at the homely man and that was enough for her.

Eliseo, living on a farm with his parents has secret ambitions of becoming a trumpet player. For that he must go to a school to master his craft. As he is about to depart, his mother is killed by a truck. Eliseo has no choice but stay behind to help his father in the small piece of land he owns and with the butcher shop in town.

At this same time, Nati, Eliseo's sister-in-law decides she has had it by herself. Having been abandoned by Eliseo's brother, she opts to go to the country to help out. It will not come as a surprise that Eliseo, in spite of his homeliness, will soon fall in love with Nati, and she with him.

This is a Spanish comedy that does not go anywhere. As directed by Nacho Garcia Velilla, the material does not bring anything new, or break new ground. The problem is the screenplay that feels tired and holds no surprises. We know how it will end from the moment Nati appears on the scene. The writers, Oriol Capel, David Olivas, Antonio Sanchez, and the director, seem to have run out of ideas before the film began. We kept thinking this film was a variation on "Ugly Betty" since Eliseo is made out to be a not great looking man.

Javier Camera could be a good actor when working with a good director, as he has proved with his work with Pedro Almodovar. However, given free rein to do his shtick, he tends to go for the exaggerated type of acting seen in Spanish television and some films. Carmen Machi has better luck as the effervescent Nati; she seems to be a natural comedienne. Actors of the stature of Juan Diego, Tristan Ulloa and Ingrid Rubio are seen in supporting roles.

The film has some lovely scenery of the Huesca region of Spain, a rural community captured by the cinematographer David Omedes.
