Old-school U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens is reassigned from Miami to his childhood home in the poor, rural coal mining towns in eastern Kentucky.
Timothy Olyphant (Marshal Raylan Givens) starred on Deadwood (2004) as Sheriff Seth Bullock. Several other cast members who appeared on "Deadwood" made guest appearances on this show: W. Earl Brown, who played Dan Dority on "Deadwood," played a prisoner who took two officers hostage in the Marshal's office; Sean Bridgers (Johnny Burns) as a would-be assassin of a judge; Peter Jason (Con Stapleton) played an art collector; Ray McKinnon (Reverend Smith) played an assassin sent from Miami to kill Raylan; Brent Sexton (Harry Manning) played a Sheriff who helps Givens; Pruitt Taylor Vince (Mose Manuel) played a pawn shop owner with ties to the Dixie Mafia; Jim Beaver (Ellsworth) played Shelby, a mining Operation Manager, who became Boyd Crowder's man for Sheriff; Stephen Tobolowsky (Hugo Jarry) played Special Agent Barkley, an F.B.I. Agent who has an adversarial relationship with Raylan; Gerald McRaney (George Hearst) played Josiah, a former cohort of Arlo Givens on house arrest; Garret Dillahunt (Francis Wolcott/Jack McCall) played Ty Walker, one of Avery Markham's henchmen.

On multiple occasions, Raylan and the Marshals become involved in criminal activities which would either be the purview of local and state law enforcement or some other branch of the Department of Justice.
