  • Mixing in the Filipino Soap Opera Formula, I had low expectations for The Broken Marriage Vow; likely because of the logo and the shaky camera angles; but that turns out to be the least of the hindrances compared to how it perfectly mixed the Doctor Foster plotline into a Filipino Telenovela.

The Directors were well-aware of the original and the Korean versions being a worldwide phenomena, and they didn't disappoint at all. The acting was wonderful. The culture was deliberately present, and, no offense to the other two, I could definitely say that this show nailed the dinner scene better than the other two.

You can see how extremely dedicated the people who worked on this show were; and luckily, other Doctor Foster fans agree.
  • When they announced this back in 2021, I was excited to see this because I loved the Korean adaptation The World of the Married and its original Doctor Foster which became really popular all over the world. Its suspenseful and gripping tale makes the viewers thrilled to see more, even if the plot about infidelity and broken family has already been used in a lot of TV series and movies.

I'm glad that they also released this on Viu, so people who are not based in the Philippines can watch it. I live in Hong Kong and I grew up watching Korean and Philippine dramas. And for me up until the late 2010s Philippine dramas weren't evolving too much in terms of plot and film strategies. But still, it's enjoyable to watch somehow. I lost my interest in Philippine dramas when I started college, and I can say The Broken Marriage Vow offers something new but it's definitely nowhere near perfect, or what others say "the best adaptation".

The original Doctor Foster only has a total of 10 episodes while its Korean adaptation has 16, which for me is a perfect episode count for a series. The Broken Marriage Vow is longer, it has I guess more than 50 episodes already which for me is a little too much. It has so many unnecessary scenes, and it begins to get dull as the show progresses to the middle. I stopped watching when I reached episode 56. It started out good.. very similar to the Korean adaptation, but the show became dragging and loses its potential as they tried to stretch out the story adding too many scenes that are not even worthy.

When it comes to cinematography; the camera movements from the first few episodes are very shaky. If they were trying to use the single camera style of filming, shakiness shouldn't be too much because it will make it look like a found footage type. The color grading seems confused. I don't understand why they didn't make it cohesive by having just one color. Though, I like the color grading in the scenes where Doctor Jill is in the supermarket. The background sound and music are too loud, you can also hear background noises in some scenes.

Acting is not a problem. From its main cast to supporting ones, they delivered their characters very well. They are all great. Also, can we appreciate their wardrobe? The costume design is stunning!

All in all, The Broken Marriage Vow is overhyped. It has many flaws, but a game changer to Philippine drama. It's way better than the dramas I used to watch back then. I like how they are starting to adopt western and eastern styles of filmmaking. I understand that this is an adaptation, but I hope they continue to do this even on their local series.

If you're a fan of a series that has fifty to a hundred episodes, I recommend this to you. But if you're the kind of person who has a short attention span and enjoys shorter, straight to the point series then The Broken Marriage Vow is not for you. Just watch the original or Korean adaptation, because you might end up not finishing the entire series.
  • This series has potential, but they wasted it. Hear my reasons why; This is an adaptation of a very popular British TV series. They should've given their full effort and best to make a new version. The cinematography and set design is somewhat okay, lacking and looks kinda cheap. Color grading is chaotic. Colors are different in every scene. Sound is unbalanced.. Background noises/music are too overpowering. Who edited this? A fifth grader?? The story is cliché, repetitive, tiring. There's no twists and turns. They just made a lame remake. I don't get the praises given by the viewers of this show. Maybe, all of them are from the Philippines.. that's why. But coming from a viewer outside the Philippines, this is a no no for me.

I was excited to see this when I heard the news that there's going to be a new remake of Doctor Foster. I've seen The World of the Married, and that was a great series. It surpassed the original, and really exceeded my expectations. I subscribed to this app called iwant tfc so I'll be able to watch The Broken Marriage Vow (since it's not available on Netflix), but I realized I made the biggest mistake of my life. Skip this. It's not worth it. There are many quality good tv series on Netflix that are worth watching.
  • The Broken Marriage Vow is the Philippine adaptation of the highly acclaimed psychological thriller-drama entitled Doctor Foster, which has been remade by several countries all over the world. I can say, South Korea's The World of the Married is the most popular out of all adaptations because of its outstanding performance from the actors, great cinematography and intriguing story-telling. The World of the Married is the reason why I was able to find Doctor Foster, and realized that it was a remake. I was shocked at first. You won't even think that it was just a remake... truly a great show.

As for The Broken Marriage Vow I can say that this is such a bland adaptation. If you've seen the original or any other adaptations, you will also see all those in here. They didn't improve the story and anything except for the cultural set and costume design. I suggest to not listen to the praises of the fans because their comments are very misleading. They're just exaggerating, and trying to make it "the best" than the other adaptations wherein in fact this is the least among all adaptations. Expect less or you'll get disappointed. Every episode will only make you compare to the others which one executed better. That's it. There's no element of surprise.

What's even worse is that they changed the concise, fast-paced storyline into a dragging, repetitive, all over the place story which became really dull and forced in so many ways. The series started well. It followed the exciting first few episodes of the original but as the series progressed, the excitement was gone and the series turned into an uninteresting mess. I think the only powerful moment here is the iconic dinner confrontation scene, but everything after that just falls flat. They made most of the characters and scenes silly, somewhat unreasonable (especially the character of the son). What are the writers trying to point out here? Do they think the viewers are too dumb to know that? Also, where's the "psychological" factor? I thought this was going to be a "psychological thriller"? I didn't see it here. This is more like a "Filipino telenovela". It is romantic in some ways and melodramatic in so many ways. It shows no psychological thriller element at all.

Coming to cinematography, I like the idea of single-camera type of shots, good job for that but I think their editors should have also put a lot of effort in editing their raw footage. The editing looks amateurish in a lot of ways. Few of those are; The sound. The background sounds and music are too loud and a blast. There are times that it overpowers the dialogues of the characters. Second, the color grading. Color grading is a confusion. It is different in every scene. There are some scenes that are warm, orange, brownish in tone while others are cool, blue, dark greenish in tone. What a terrible mess. The editor should have made it unified and in one color tone. Lol seems like the editor always forgot what color he used, that's why it didn't match the scenes.

Will I recommend this to you? I'm not sure. It's up to you. You have many adaptations to choose from anyway. Better if you see the original Doctor Foster first, and some other adaptations like; The World of the Married (South Korea adaptation), Infidele (France adaptation) and Sadakatsiz (Turkey adaptation), so you'll understand where my point is coming from.
  • Coming from its original materials; Doctor Foster and The World of the Married, The Broken Marriage Vow lacks suspense, excitement and sensuality. Doctor Foster is very thrilling, while The World of The Married is intriguing and sexy. I believe this should be for mature audiences but why did they make it look like a "PG-13' kind of show? It is overly dramatic which makes it boring in many ways. They also made most of the scenes exaggerated, unnatural and old (seems like I'm watching an Asian drama from the '90s lol). If you're meticulous or a fan of watching Korean and western dramas, you'll notice the errors in this series. From the story to technical aspects.. There's too many flaws.

I don't get the hype of this. There's nothing to watch for anyway. If you really want to feel the gripping tale then I suggest you watch the original Doctor Foster or The World of the Married because those two will definitely give you the tension that you're looking for in a series. Wasted Opportunity.
